Time Capsule plus ATV

Just a note in case it helps anyone make a decision, I added the Time Capsule to my home network setup and it is like I have put my ATV on steroids. They are not even close to each other, three floors apart, the Time Capsule is even down in a concrete basement but the speed is terrific. I am copying movies from the Mac to the ATV in a quarter of the time before and there is no lag while I wait for anything to load, like the movie trailers or large podcasts. The TC setup was simple and quick, my first Time Machine back up is a couple of days in but at over 200g it will finish soon. I am really please with how the TC has sped up the ATV, though.
Brian.

Yes, Chenks, that is what I meant to say of course. I had a cheapo wireless G router before but the difference using the TC is incredible. It is another great Apple product.

  • Transferring music and videos from Time Capsule to ATV??

Can you transfer content from the Time Capsule to the ATV directly? I have many songs and tv shows that I have saved on my Time Capsule so as to not take up space on my Macbook Pro. It seems like a pain to have to bring that content onto my laptop then to the apple TV, then to conserve space, take back off of the laptop. Isn't there a way just to transfer from Time Capsule directly to ATV?
    Thank You

    No, there isn't.
However! In Itunes, click on itunes on your menu bar, then prefs. Go to advanced and untick 'copy files to itunes music folder'
You'll then be able to add whatever you want to itunes, and thus, your appleTV without any content residing on your macbook pro

  • Storing video on Time capsule and ATV and not on computer

I would like to build my video library and not store it on my IMAC 24 When I back it up and delete it I also loose it from ATV Then I have to restore to watch it Is there any way around this So much storage on the ATV and Time Capsule Why use the computer memory

I previously had my iTunes library on a network drive but moved to it an external drive connected directly to my iMac because streaming and file downloads were slower on the network drive due to the iTune's content management scheme. The short answer is, it will work regardless of whether or not you keep your library on your Time Capsule, your iMac or an external drive.

  • Time Capsule plus Asus AC1900 - Best setup?

I have a Time Capsule connected to cable modem and then connected via ethernet to a Belkin wiresless router.  I currently have two home wireless networks and it works okay.  The Belkin operates on 2.4ghz and TimeCapsule 5ghz.  I am replacing the Belkin with the above router and wanted thoughts on the best setup.  Continue with two separate wireless networks?  Some in my home use the Time Capsule as a backup for their apple computers, so keeping that operating wirelessly would be a plus.
I also have a ethernet switch and could use that to connect to the cable modem and the switch to connect the time capsule and Asus router.
Does running two separate 5ghz wifi networks create any issues?  Is it recommended?  We have both Apple and Windows OS in our home.
    Thank you for your help.

In this case, will the ASUS be plugged into the modem and the TC plugged into one of the Ethernet ports on the ASUS?  If so, will I still be able to use the Ethernet ports on the TC as well?  This would essentially just place the ASUS between the modem and TC on my current configuration.
Yes, the TC is going to be plugged into the Asus by ethernet. It will be in bridge mode.. wireless on or off is entirely up to you. The ethernet ports on the TC will be fine.
Plugged into the TC ethernet ports currently are a Mac mini and an HP LaserJet.  These won't need to now be plugged into the ASUS, correct?
You can plug into either the Asus or the TC.. whichever is the more convenient. For backup purposes if the mini is still doing backups to the Mini then you may have a slight advantage being plugged directly to the TC.
I'm also assuming that since the wireless on the TC will be turned off, I will need to migrate all of my wireless settings now to the ASUS including timed access, MAC address IP assignments, etc.?
I think you will find the Asus offers better controls and better wireless signal. Since the TC is bridged it cannot handle MAC address to IP. Again you would do all of that on the Asus.
If you do find the wireless useful on the TC there is no need to turn it off.. you might need to do something better than auto channels but I find the apple computers work just as well to my TC as to the Asus. And since I do backups over wireless to the TC I keep that connection going.
Timed access should still work fine. That is not related to the routing side but is purely based on the wireless controls.
There is btw another way to do this.. I am using the TC in static IP mode. And then it is wireless extended to airport extreme upstairs.
I have described the layout here.
Re: airport time capsule keeps disconnecting
This allows me to keep the TC as dhcp server to half the network.. and in particular provide a different dns to certain devices. It works as well if not better than simple bridge.. although I would only do something complicated if you have specific need for it.
Certainly I gain nothing with clients that are not AC wireless... and they are rare on my network at this point.

  • Time Capsule with ATV

    Hi All,
I have searched the forum but really can't find a definate answer to my question.
I have recently purchased a 160gb ATV (by the way.. i LOVE it), but im finding my 1mac is now getting rather full with all the new movies ive transferred over from my dvd collection.
I would like to purchase a 1tb time capsule but here is my question:
I sync all the movies etc direct tot he ATV (about 100gb at the moment) and would continue to do this. I have two questions:
    1. Am i correct in thinking if I transfer my itunes library to the TC, I would no longer need my imac? The ATV will automatically look for the TC for syncs?
    2. Can I connect the TC and ATV together with ethernet cable? Would the sync speed increase?
    Any help most welcome.
    Thanks
    Roy

"1. Am i correct in thinking if I transfer my itunes library to the TC, I would no longer need my imac? The ATV will automatically look for the TC for syncs?" I use TC as a storage environment for all my M4V files and use ATV with those files.. I don't rely on this as the sole source of back up. To sync to ATV user must have the FIRST computer to point at ATV with files in the itunes library(does not matter where the files are as long as itunes points to them) and itunes must be open and ATV must point to the computer which "houses" itunes. Once the sync is complete ATV can serve on its own without a computer or itunes power on or open. Hard drive space comes into play because user can have more files than ATV can hold. There streaming plays an important role. So bottom line the ATV was not designed to look at a holder of files to sync. It utilizes the first connected (synced) computer and that itunes library.
"2. Can I connect the TC and ATV together with ethernet cable? Would the sync speed increase?" Yes you can use ethernet to connect to the TC lan port. The previous mentioned scenario comes into play. Since TC is a gigabyte router then user should have Cat6 ethernet connector although the speed is limited real world to about 12M/sec wired and 8 M/sec wireless N. Its not a true NAS but good enough for most of us. I doubt a Cat6 is required because of the speed limitation built into TC. Although a Mac ethernet to TC does get to 33m/sec with Cat6 ethernet.
I tried true NAS its a pain in the butt.

  • Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme

    Hi all
I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network  - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.
Is the airport extreme in bridge mode?
As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm

  • Just curious about time capsule plus time machine

so i was checking my time machine settings and instead of the regular time machine icons they seem to keep changing and also display the amount of space used or available:
shouldnt the drive be the same icon with the clock on it and display the amount of space left on the Timecapsule drive?
Btw Data (Time Machine) = the drive all my BackUps goto
Media (Time Capsule) = network drive attached with my media files
    thanks!!

    Oh okay, thank you!
yeah i noticed in Snow Leopard it did that too.
same with viewing my other computers on the network in finders sidebar.
it just showed the NAME and not the Icon for the computer, very weird!

  • Best way to setup ATV with Time Capsule?

I just got an ATV for Christmas and I'm looking for the best way to set it up. I keep all my movies and music on my Time Capsule and have my iTunes reference it on my MacBook. When I first hooked up the ATV it only recognizes my media half the time and takes a rediculous amount of time loading any video. Does anyone have any suggestions on a better way to do this? If I connect a network car from my time capsule to ATv will this speed things up? Any info is appreciated.

The Time Capsule still has to talk to the iTunes Host over the network so actually yes the faster gigabit speed still does come into play. So one point to you too.
In my opinion though, the Time Capsule disk sharing feature lacks in speed because the processor in the Time Capsule is slow compared to using a real computer and that's true for almost any NAS device. Also, the Time Capsule is designed to put the hard drive to sleep way more often than on a computer so you often have to wait until the hard drive spins up when you want to use it.
If it is at all possible, use a USB hard drive externally attached directly to your computer for best performance if you need more storage. The NAS solution wasn't fast enough for me either so I switched to hanging a hard drive off my desktop Mac and have been happy ever since. Of course, if you use a laptop this won't be as practical of a solution.
Then again, I just realized you said it takes a "ridiculous" amount of time so that sounds more like a network issue than anything else. If you are fine with how long it takes for your Macbook to stream media attached to your Time Capsule then the Apple TV shouldn't be that much different.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
All content must be played through iTunes.

  • WiFi network security: How do I create a hidden SSID using Time Capsule?

Hello. I'm having a security issue on my wireless network. I recently noticed (via a Finder window under "Shared" on the left side of the window) someone squatting on our wifi network which is WPA encrypted and is based on a Time Capsule plus 2 Airport Express boxes for streaming music. I have an external network drive connected to the Time Capsule which houses all my iTunes music and movies. I have a feeling they are breaking in to steal from that rather than merely using our internet connection. I immediately changed the password. The next day I found them on our network again. I changed the password again. Immediately after changing the password and refreshing the Finder window, they showed up on our network yet again. I then changed the name of our SSID/wifi network and the password for a 3rd time. So far they haven't showed up and I'd like to keep it that way. We live in an apartment building and I fear that they won't see our old network name in the lists of networks and will realize that the new network name is us and then they will break in yet again.
    1. is there anything else I can do to stop them?
    2. is it a good idea/solution to hide our SSID and if so, how do I do that on the Time Capsule?
I can't seem to find any info on creating a hidden SSID on the discussion boards so any help is appreciated. Thank you!

If you have other devices on your network and have enabled file sharing on them, you will see an occasional device or two come and go. That is normal. Usually, you'll see something with some numbers. That's usually the last 6 digits of the MAC address of a device.
Any hacker who is smart enough to crack your network is not going to allow his identity or any trace of his computer to be displayed on your network.
If you are still convinced that someone is cracking your network, you can enable the "closed" network option, but there are plenty of free utilities on the Internet available that will reveal a "closed" network in seconds. Most 12 year old kids looking for free wireless know how to do this.
If you want to do this anyway, here is how:
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Click the Wireless Options button
Enter a check mark next to "Create a closed network"
Click Done, then click Update and wait for the Time Capsule to restart

  • Time capsule to Express Via Ethernet

    Hi all,
I have a Time Capsule plus two Airport Express units situated throughout my house.  The Express units are extending the Time Capsule WiFi network.  I want to connect all three via Ethernet, so as to eliminate latency.  I've never had luck doing this though.  Plugging the Ethernet into the Express units causes the whole Wifi network to die!
What are the appropriate settings for all of these units to make this work?  Thanks in advance!
    Paul

Power off the Porch Express for now.
With the Living Room AirPort Express powered on for a few minutes, hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the LR Express.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that,  click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use.......LRExpress.....for example, and click Next
Now the screen will indicate that the Express is being configured to extend using Ethernet.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.   That''s it.
Use the same procedure for the Porch Express.

  • ATV Time capsule frustration

I have an ATV (model MD199B/A) the 720p version, a Time Capsule 2TB and an iMac running Mountain Lion.
Up until recently the whole system ran well, but recently the ATV does not want to play. I can't access content on my iMac, getting a message saying that it can't see the network, but then I go into the setting and the network is there with 4 or 5 bars strength, or it says that Home Sharing is not turned on (it is). Sometimes it cycles around between one of these and another, and sometimes starts loading content but never gets there and hangs. During all this, I get a strong Wifi signal on my phone next to the TV.
I have repeatedly reset the ATV, the modem, the TC, opened and closed iTunes, and pretty much everything from the usual book of advice, all to no avail. Now I am on the verge of removing the ATV and putting in a Roku instead.
Can anyone give some advice on next steps? ATV to a Genius Bar?

As a follow up, I have taken out the 3rd Gen and put back in my first gen ATV with the 160Gig HD, and the content is happily syncing across, so this is clealry a problem firmly belonging to the 3rd Gen plus or minus recent software.

  • WDTV Live Plus and Time Capsule

I just got a WDTV Live Plus and I love it.  The only problem is that I see the Apple Time Capsule and iMAC right away in the network shares, but I cannot get on them.  I wanted to see what the issue could be.  When I click them I am prompted for an account and PW.  I put that in and after it thinks for a little bit I am given an error message that says "there are no supported files" or something like that.  I am thinking about attaching some external size via USB but I want to make sure it can work first.

SMB is windows networking standard.. It has limitations on name length.. so keep to no more than 12characters.. that is less than max.. from memory 20.. but use short names.. ie name of the Time Capsule.. TC.
SMB does not like names with spaces.. Apple by default uses spaces.. get rid of spaces.
And SMB does not like certain non-alphanumeric characters. Apostrophe is one of them. Apple wizard sets up the TC with your name.. eg Fred's Time Capsule.. all hopelessly wrong. From an SMB viewpoint.. and since Windows still rules the world.. and everything works on SMB.. including Apple.. and including Linux which both use SAMBA.. the linux version of SMB protocol. And therefore of course the WDTV Live which is Linux firmware device.
You change the name in the airport utility from a computer.
    eg.
So change the wireless name.. TC name and hard disk name.. so everything follows the rules.

  • ATV - Powered By Time Capsule - Controlled By iTouch - Heard Thru AirTunes?

    Here's the scenario:
My Apple TV is too small to hold all my media, so I've got a 500gb external sync'd to iTunes to stream it.
At the same time, I have an Airport Express streaming music from iTunes to wireless speakers throughout the house. To control this, I use a webapp for my iPod Touch that lets me decide which speakers should be 'on', their volumes, change tracks, etc.
In a perfect world, someone will tell me how to let Apple TV do all this heavy lifting for me without the need for a PC running or iTunes. Some questions:
    1. Will Time Capsule wirelessly sync to Apple TV so that my PC never has to be 'on' to stream my massive media collection?
    2. Can Airport Express get its content from Apple TV instead of an instance of iTunes?
    3. Can I use the wi-fi connection via the iTouch to control the music on Apple TV or will that only function via an instance of iTunes as well?
Simply put, I want to be out of the iTunes business when it comes to listening to music or watching movies in my home. I want to boot up ATV and use my iTouch to control it and all the wireless audio in my house. Possible?

If you are using the Apple TV to stream the content from your iTunes collection, then you could use a webapp (such as Signal) to control what your iTunes is playing and have the album art from iTunes show on your TV. You just change the source in the Apple TV menu.
You cannot, however, control the Apple TV directly with a webapp, use it as a wireless server to send music to other destinations, or sync to Time Capsule. Apple has not designed the Apple TV to be backed up. The intention is that everything comes from your computer.
You could use an Airport Express to stream music from your computer to another room, and (I think) you could have it streaming through the Airport Express and the Apple TV at the same time, though i haven't tried this. It looks like it should work.

  • My ATV is full, how can I move the contents to my Time Capsule?

My Apple TV is full (although some of its contents appear as other and I cannot see them). I have a MacBookPro and a Time Capsule. I back up my mac everyday, but what I want to do is to erase content from my ATV so I can download more in it. Is it possible to sync the content of the ATV directly to the time capsule? So I can have my library in the time capsule and don't get my mac's hard disk full either?
    Thanks!
    C.

You could use custom syncing to sync only unwatched videos, that would delete them from the ATV once they've been watched through to the end, but they would remain in the iTunes library. You could also move your iTunes library to your Time Capsule if you want to free up space on your MBP hard drive.
You would need to copy your library folder to the Time Capsule, then change the library location in iTunes preferences. Once you've confirmed everything is working properly, you can delete the files from your MBP. Regardless of where your library is located, it's a good idea to keep your files backed up to DVDs.
