Time Capsule Preparing and backing up!!

Dears,
My 1TB Time Capsule is not accepting back ups from My MacBook Air, for some reason it says preparing for 30 minutes then an error message appears "A network problem occurred and and your time machine could not back up". Although I've another iMac connected to the same time machine and it's working probably.
Please some help!!

there are other macs that use this drive as well to back up with time machine anyway of preserving them?
Ah, that may be part of the problem.
Their sparse bundles may have taken up so much of the space that there isn't much available for your Mac.
Whatever you decide to do next, connect via Ethernet if at all possible. It's going to take a long time, but will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI.
You have some options, none very attractive:
Via the Finder, see how large each of the sparse bundles is. If there isn't much space for the Mac in question, you could delete some old backups from one or more of the other Macs to make more space. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You can delete the sparse bundle in question via the Finder, but it may take a long time. If you decide to do that, and it's taking a very long time, see the blue box at the end of #12 in the FAQ.
If the Time Capsule's internal HD just isn't large enough for all those Macs' backups (at least twice the size of the total used on all the Macs), delete the sparse bundle for the Mac in question, and connect a USB drive to the TC and back up that Mac (and/or some of the others) to the USB drive instead.

  • Time Capsule Preparing and Finishing

Seems to take too long to prepare and then does not want to finish the backup. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Does it actually finish? or is it case of going on 'forever'?
Are you referring to an initial backup or subsequent backups?
Are you connecting wirelessly or via wired Ethernet connection?
A bit more information will enable us to be more helpful.

    Hello,
Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.

  • Time Capsule won't back-up; it just stays at "Preparing Backup" What can I do to resolve it?

My Time Capsule won't back-up--it just stays at "Preparing Backup" while trying to perform the backup. Do I need to reboot, and if so, how do I do that? Thanks!

On Leopard, it's hard to tell what's going on.  See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Want to use Time Capsule as a back up AND external storage device-help!

I know there's been a few variations on this question but I can't seem to find the answer that relates to me so probably being dumb but help would be greatly appreciated.
I bought a 500gb Time Capsule yesterday and finally got it set up through AirPort Utility. I think I've done it right-there's a green light and it's going through the motions of backing up although VERY slowly. It's taken 10 hours to back up 20GB. I've used Time Machine before with an external Seagate drive so I know how to access/check those back ups.
I have a dish on the side of my house (on side of a mountain!) that brings the internet signal into a wireless router and then my MacBook accesses through that WIFI network. I plugged the ethernet cable from one of the standard ports out the back of the router into the WAN port on the Time Capsule as part of the setup and that seems to be right in that I can see the TC and surf the net.
So, now I just want to see the Time capsule as a normal external drive on my desktop and move other files to it so they can come off my Macbook completely but the only way icon I can see if the white one that says 'Backup of...' I've copied stuff onto this but I suspect that was the wrong thing to do.
Finally, I only want to TM to use the TC up to a certain max storage so I always have space free on it but can't find settings to allow me to do that.
I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me how to set this up properly!

No. Don't transfer anything into the Back of... sparsebundle. That is your Time Machine backup.
Under Finder -> Shared -> Time Capsule -> Time Capsule Disk. This is where you can create a new folder to store your files. If you want to see this on your Desktop, via Finder, click Preferences. Under General, make sure +Connected servers+ is ticked.

Since the TC HDD isn't partitionable, you can't really do that. Best thing is to get another HDD for storage as TM works best if you give it enough room to grow.

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and Power Book

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.

  • Time Capsule for a back-up device and a WiFi device

I would like to start backing up by way of a Time Machine (I assume this is the same as a Time Capsule). Is it possible to use a Time Capsule to back-up and to set up a Wireless network in my home? If so, is it possible to allow several people to use the Time Machine to get on the internet (like the Airport Extreme)?
My other option was to get a LaCie external hard drive as my back-up device. (do I need to worry about the LaCie being pre formatted HFS+ or is this pretty standard?) Being the novice that I am, I would like the easiest but highly secure set-up that is in this range. I think LaCie makes good external drives that work good with the Apple products which is why I would consider using this device for my back-ups and my old Airport Extreme for a wireless network in my home.
I have a 500 hard drive in my MBP and am looking at the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk
    FireWire 400 & 800 | Hi-Speed USB 2.0 | 500 GB
    thanks for any help.

So the Time Capsule and Time Machine do go together, correct?
you could say time capsule was designed to work hand-in-hand with time machine.
The icon I have on the dock called Time Machine is the software I would use to get the Time Capsule up and running, correct?
no. you get time machine up and running using the time machine system preference pane. the icon in your dock is for when you want to enter time machine in order to restore files from your backups.
you configure the TC's router side with *airport utility*
Oh, I remember Jolly Giant--you and a couple of your buds were really trying to drive me into the ground with your men and untrue statements sometime back.
    huh ?
if you're referring to my involvement in this thread -> http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2418460&start=0&tstart=0, i can see only supportive comments and suggestions from my fellow users and me.
So, if I were to get a Time Capsule, I would not need my 3-year-old Airport Extreme.
you don't need but you still can use it (unless it's dead).
Since formatting a drive is easy, is this knowledge a person needs beforehand or will the program walk one step by step?
you would use *disk utility* to format the drive. however, all my LaCie drives came formatted for Mac.
I was thinking another option that I could try to get my 3-year-old Airport Extreme up and running and get the LaCie as back-up hard drive.
again, time machine will not back up to drives connected to an airport extreme, however, ChronoSync will.
I would like the LaCie with the orange extra pad of protection
i have one of those myself (the one with firewire 400/800 and USB interfaces and 320 GB capacity) and use it for CCC clones. they are very handy and reliable.
I think CC clones are a bit over my head. I would like to get something that I just plug in it determines what needs to updated, does it thing and I disconnect it and of I go until I am at home next time.
CCC is very simple to use but it sounds like time machine (in connection with a time capsule or a directly attached LaCie drive) is the right thing for you - it's basically fire and forget. however, for time machine to work, your computer must be running.

  • My time capsule is not backing up my macbook.  Password issue.  My other mac mini connected wirelessly works fine and backsup correctly.

My Time capsule is is backing up my Mac Mini just fine, however, my Macbook keeps asking me for the password and it does not like any of the passwords I use.  I have since used a pen to reset my Time Capsule and it reset all the network passwords for all 11 devices I had linked to it, however, it did not resolve the issue of my backup issue.  Ironically, the macbook still connects wirelessly with my macbook so I can surf the web with it, however, it does not backup on that same device because it must have a different password... Not sure what to do since my Mac Mini is backing up successfully.  I must have chosen a different password and it saved to that device, is there a way to display the Time Capsule password on my mac mini so I can attemp to use that on my macbook?

What is the current setting of the TC disk access? It has three main levels, device password, disk password and user names and passwords. If you have it set to the last you will need to create a new username and password for the MacBook or recover what you were using.
Have you ever done a backup to the TC via the MacBook?
    What OS does it run?
The default password if you did not set anything is public.
Try manually mounting the TC disk on the MacBook and see if that allows TM to find it.
There is a lot of useful setup and troubleshooting info here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would install the widget.. A1 and do a full reset of TM in the laptop, A4. As well as verify if you have already done a backup.. A5.
Basic setup of TC for TM is explained here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Recovery of passwords is possible but should not be necessary.
    See info here.

  • I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?

I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?  Also, how do I add co-workers to my work time capsule and wife to my home time capsule?  Thank you!

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my time capsule as my DSL modem?  Based on the location of my iMAC right now it would be better to just leave the modem provided by my internet provider in place.  I really just want to use the time capsule as a back-up storage device for now and connnect the ethernet cable from my ISP at a later date.

Generally it is easier to bridge the TC and plug it into the router.. it then lives on the network.. it is after all, a network drive.. and you can access it via your existing connection whether wireless or wired to the existing modem.
If you really want a totally stand alone setup please tell me how you are presently accessing internet on the Mac you want to backup on the TC.

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.
