Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

  • Time capsule problems after installing Lion

After installing Lion, I need to regularly shut down iMac(Intel) in order to have Time capsule do the next backup. This method allows me to manually back up the automatic function to back up no longer exists. Also unable to connect to the backup disk.

Mine needs backing up immediately after its just backed up!! Its crazy!! IOS5 was supposed to be free but as a result I had to pay to upgrade to Lion then I had to pay to upgrade to iPhoto 11 just to be able to transfer photos from my iphone!! On top of this, Lion runs as slow as a PC, asks to backup constantly, I'm losing iDisk and iWeb next year and they've removed the bounce facility from Mail. Blinding. Well done Apple - who's brainwave was Lion and IOS5? Bill Gates?

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Problem accessing Time Capsule settings after firmware 7.3.1 upgrade

I understand there are similar posts, but none provide a solution to my problem:
I bought a brand new Time Capsule and set it up. Everything worked fine and I could access it using AirPort Utility. After the initial setup I immediately upgraded the firmware from version 7.3 to 7.3.1. Now, when I try to access or change the settings, AirPort Utility first reports that it is "Reading the Time Capsule configuration...", and after about 2 minutes I get the message
"An error occurred while reading the configuration. -- Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
I performed a hard reset and could then access the settings again for another setup. At the end of the setup, AirPort Utility reports that it's "Writing the Time Capsule configuration...", and after about 2 minutes
"An error occurred while updating the configuration. -- Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6722)"
I also tried to access the settings using a direct Ethernet connection to my iMac, but to no avail.
Now, even though I can't access the Time Capsule settings, which is annoying, the device seems to be working: it creates a wireless network and I can access the Time Capsule hard drive.
Any solutions to this problem? Is it possible to revert to firmware version 7.3? Or do I need to wait for a firmware upgrade?

Great, thank you! Looks like this solved my problem.
I performed the reset, and then restored firmware version 7.3 using your great advice to *press the option key when clicking "Check for Updates"*.
I then used the setup dialog, put it my info and passwords, restart... oops, once again, I can't access the settings, even though I'm using firmware 7.3 which used to work when I first set up Time Capsule when it was fresh out of the box.
Reset, do the same thing again, still can't access settings and can't upgrade the firmware.
Reset, *first thing upgrade the firmware to 7.3.1*. I put in my info again, and finally, everything works.
One note: I'm not sure if that matters, but in the last step, I set up Time Capsule using the window that you get when you click the Time Capsule icon in the AirPort Utility. Previously, I would click "Continue" in the AirPort Utility for the assisted setup. This might not matter, but I want to mention it anyways in case it helps replicate this solution.

  • Time Capsule full after a "Erase Free Space" using Disk Utility

    Hello,
I am facing some issues related to my Time Capsule.
Reviewing my past, I had a lot of backups on this, using Time Machine and it always worked pretty well. But after deleting some backups manually to reclaim disk space, this was not exactly freeing it.
Searching in the forum here, I saw that I could mount the backup sparsebundle image and map it into the Disk Utility. This always worked greatly too both for disk checking and reclaiming the space back.
The problem starts on the last Friday when I performed the operation again, but it started using the whole free space that I had and did not give it back.
Studying the case I found that it creates a temporary folder to store the file it creates to write the byte 0 on the disk. This file actually resides in the sparsebundle image and therefore I can see the file with 200GB, for example, in the Finder, this is a split in bands (8MB) just like the backup is. After the disk gets full, the Disk Utility should delete the file properly and give me back the space safely.
Right now my Time Capsule has 0 byte free and I can't do anything on it beyond redo the the Erase Free Space operation. When I do it, it starts writing the temporary file again and the problem repeats itself.
I know that if I backup the data and really erase the disk, I'll get it back, but this is not an option for me because I want a smart solution for this.
The only thing that changed between when it worked and now is the 10.5.6 update that I made and I'd like that it's not the root of the issue.
Is there any suggestion or general stuff I could do to fix it?
Did anybody already face the same issue?
If anyone needs more details to help me out of this, just let me know.
    Thanks and regards,
    Eduardo

Just another thing to add, I'd like a good solution for this as the redo operation from Disk Utility takes around 2 days and then it just "dies".

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule Problems

I have a Time Capsule and my Time Machine no longer seems to work on my MBA.
It had been working fine for the past 2 months. It would do quick backups (between 1-3 MB normally) after my first long backup.
Now whenever I look at my MBA it will show Time Machine spinning but always says "Preparing Backup." It will stay in this state for days. If I try to stop the backup it will then be stuck in "Stopping Backup." The only way to get out of this is to turn off the computer. Then it will say "Last Backup Failed" and the next time it tries to sync the process will start over again.
In the past I would have some problems if the MBA went to sleep in the middle of a backup where the backup would fail, but it would work the next time it tried to backup. I don't know why it isn't working anymore.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

See this KB article. It may apply to your situation.
Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine preferences may display "Preparing" for a longer time

One observation it has is that anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process.

  • Time capsule problems in mixed apple windows network

    Hello
I am facing issues with my home network.
I am using a time capsule on the firm ware version 7.6, which is the newest to my knowledge (just updated)
I have setup my time capsule with costum name and password. Time machine is off at the moment.
I have setup a wireless network with costum name and password. I have not activated a guest network.
In the network we use one windows laptop running on windows xp and a mac book pro running snow leopard.
We both can acess the wireless network with our laptops. But the connection to the internet is shaky, Especially if there is another guest with a windows pc comming into the network (and we give him the network details) I loose connection to the internet for several days. Usually the issue resolves itself a couple of days after the guest has left.
What could cause such a problem?
Thank you in advance for your answers!
    Wolfi

This type of question arises from time to time and is really hard to figure out.
If you restart the TC does the problem go away immediately?
What about if the TC is reset and redo the setup.. does it go?
If you connect via ethernet does the problem exist or is it purely wireless?
Does the PC that is added have a different computer name and different username and password on the local disk to yours?
Try doing a manual wireless configuration. Set channels to fixed value. Change the wireless name for 5ghz so it is different to 2.4ghz. See if that makes an improvement.

  • Time Capsule - problems with file sharing

Time Capsule is working great with Time Machine, but I can't copy files to it even after enabling file sharing in AirPort Utility. I'd really like to move my iTunes library to it since the external drive it currently lives on is full and the TC has about 1.96TB still free. Any thoughts on what the problem is? I see it under "shared" in Finder, but all I can see is the "data" folder and I get warnings that the drive is read only. Thanks for any help you all might be able to provide!

Not Bob .. but it is fairly simple.
When we say external drive we mean a drive plugged physically directly into the Mac.
It can then be backed up by TM.
Just open the TM preference and click on the options.. it should automagically include all disks connected to local machine. You can exclude a drive though. Make sure nothing is excluded .. if it is uncheck it.
TM cannot backup a Network drive but can use a drive as long as it is correctly formatted and accessible to Mac OS as a target for the backup.
I would also recommend you do a straight backup of your disk. 500GB drive is cheap. Get a USB holder and do that direct file copy or use a software like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. The later can make a direct copy of the disk in the freeware version. IMHO it is a lot easier to recover.. the increments if you already have the bulk.

  • Time capsule - problems with directory

I have got time capsule running about two weeks ago and everything worked well Tuesday evening it came up with a message saying it could not access the directory on my Macbook pro - still doing it so switched it off - any suggestions?

Here's something weird. Another annoying issue I've had with TC is that it slows down the network over time. I'm on Uverse at 10/1.5 and after a week or so it's down to about 2.5 to 3 down. A reboot of my Mac and TC and the problem goes away. So while I'm musing about the problem with the directory, I notice I'm starting to slow again. I reboot, and guess what? My directory is back all the way to April when I set it up.
I'm beginning to suspect that TC/TM doesn't play well with a couple of other applications. One of the companies I'm working with uses a P2P system to send around some monster video files and I'm using something called Azureus (which is also hook up with an application called Vuez that seems to be a YouTube sort of thing). I run Azureus overnight as do most of the development guys I'm working with so we can send around some big video files and have them ready for review and discussion in the morning. I didn't have anything coming in or going out last night and didn't launch the program after the reboot and everyhing is fine so far. It's my first suspect. If not that, then something else maybe is fighting TM for resources? Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this and post if something becomes obvious.

  • Time Capsule - problems connecting

I purchased the 1TB TC & it arrived last Monday. Was able to go right to work setting things up. Once it was set-up my MBP was able to connect to the internet & recognize TC just fine (initial TM back-up of 120GB took about 5 hours with ethernet connection). The problem that still is not solved is the MB in our house cannot connect to the internet using the TC. It recognizes TC & has 5 bars for the signal strength, but cannot get on the the internet.
We spend about 8 hours with Apple Care (including about 4 hours with "Level 2" support). They confirmed we had the correct versions of s/w & all of our TC settings are correct. We also tried numerous different settings combinations (such as different types of security - none, WPA, etc.) and nothing works.
I have received approval from Apple to send the unit back & am doing a secure delete to the TC. Before I send it back I would appreciate comments/suggestions from this group.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I seem to be having the exact same problem. I have an Airport Express with AirTunes connected to my Time Capsule. Don't know if that could be affecting anything?
Anyways I have intermittent problems with my network as well... after I went into Airport Utility do see if anything needed updating (can't remember what I did in there unfortunately) I lost the connection and when I regained wireless it no longer is able to find the USB-harddrive connected to Time Capsule.
I can still plug it in to my regular mac without problems. Also when Time Machine is running it seems to be running so much slower than before. Any ideas?
Update: I just tried connecting the USB disk to Time Capsule live and in the Finder it pops up under Time Capsule in "Shared", but when I try to access the drive it says "Original item cannot be found"... other times it just hangs for extended periods without finding anything, perhaps the Time Capsule Drive, but again seems very unresponsive.

I'm having this same problem. I've talked to 2 different people at the Apple Care Center and neither of them were able to help me. When I first got my MacBook Pro and Canon printer and set up the printer through the TC via the USB port I was able to print wirelessly. Then I tried scanning wirelessly and was unable to so I called the Care Center and the lady helped me download the latest drive, but it still didn't work so she connected me to someone else. That lady told me the TC doesn't allow scanning capabilities, ok that solved that problem. From then on I was unable to print wirelessly. This is where I'm at now...the last two people I talked to at the Care Center were unable to help me. We went through everything, from deleting the printer I have and reinstalling it to downloading the driver I started with. Below is something I found on the canon website regarding the drivers and downloads for the PIXMA MX310 series:
    History:
The printing function when using AirPort connection has been modified on the OS side. Therefore, in conformity with this modification this printing function has been enabled on the printer driver side. NOTE: When using AirPort connection, the following conditions are required: - Use the latest version of the AirPort firmware. - Use in the Mac OS X v10.5.3 or later environment.
    Environment
Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (CUPS)
    Caution
    1. Use the CUPS drivers in the following cases only: -When performing 16-bit color printing -When printing from the 64-bit application 2. **Mac OS X v10.5 Printing using AirPort connection cannot be performed.**
I am so confused...why could I print when i first set everything up, but am now unable to, even though I supposedly reverted back to the original driver.
Someone, please help...this is very frustrating!!!

I then get a popup from Time Machine that says "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Wayne's Macbook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
I see "Time Machine Backups" on my desktop, and can access the drive via Finder.
If I use Finder to go into "Volumes" I can eject "Time Machine Backups" and the "Data" directory. If I then reselect the Time Capsule from the Time Machine settings window the backup works. Backups continue to work until the next time i reboot the machine.

Is the problem because something is causing the system to mount the Data drive at startup, then Time Machine tries to mount it again? Any suggestions? I've done some searching in the support forums and FAQs but can't find anything that seems to match my situation. (No doubt due to my inexperience with Time Capsule / Time Machine. <grin>)
Many things for any suggestions and/or links to suggested solutions so I dont' have to take any manual actions after a reboot.

At least if yours is a new Time Capsule you can beat up on Apple Support to get them to fix it.   So far no-one seems to have aroused Apple's interest in this issue.   I expect Apple have judged it less critical than whatever other teething problems have shown up with the launch of iCloud.  Apple are probably overwhelmed.
