Time capsule problems since Maverick upgrade

Maverick forced an upgrade from Airport Utility 5.6 to the latest version. I am now unable to connect via wifi. I stayed with Airport 5.6 throughout previous upgrades because it allowed me to easily convert between ethernet and wifi. I back up large sized photos which would take forever using wifi. I upgraded to Maverick when I was connected to time capsule through an ethernet connection and can't get back to wifi. In the process of making this work, time capsule created a new wireless network which I cannot figure out how to delete. I rebooted time capsule several times - ethernet works, but wifi does not. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thank you.

Why does the backup from the latest OS X Mavericks time machine fail with the latest firmware upgrade of Time Machine?
"Why", we'll probably never know except to mention that Mavericks appears to be a bug ridden operating system, particularly with Time Machine and corrupted back ups.
I would suggest that you try Pondini's Time Machine --- Troubleshooting to see if that will help get things going again.

  • Airport Time Capsule Problems Since Snow Leopard - Loses Connections

I did a straightforward install of Snow Leopard on the iMac 24 and it went fine. I have very few apps on it so nothing weird running to cause two issues:
1 - Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule have become slow and unreliable. Also, even 10-100 MB file transfers to a MacBook Pro 17", also on Snow Leopard, took the longest time.
2 - The Airport/WiFi icon will often go from being a static icon with full signal to one in which each curved concentric level bar flashes one by one up from the bottom dot to the topmost arc, and then back down, and back and forth. This often happens in the middle of Time Capsule backups. Holding down the mouse on the icon shows my network still connected, but the backup fails, and any web page attempted will also report there is no network.
I wonder if others have had similar problem(s).
    Imran

I am also having very strange problems with 10.6.1 and TC. The network disconnects for no apparent reason, frequently. It seems to be tying up both of the phone lines too, because once the TC reconnects to the network, the telephone no longer works (it says "line busy" and remains that way until and unless I unplug the TC). Plugging directly into the cable modem works fine, no problems at all with the telephones or with the network disconnecting at random. All three macs on my home network (macbook, MBPro and iMac) are updated to 10.6.1. At first I thought the problem might have been the modem itself but it works fine; it's only when the TC is connected that the weirdness happens.

  • HP Scanner problems since Mavericks Upgrade.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?  I have a HP ScanJet G4050.  Since upgrading to Mavericks on my i-Mac, I can scan documents and they show up in the scanning software, but if I try to print or save the document I get a striped page, no usable information.  I checked out HP's website, but there are no drivers for Apple products.  Are there any options or work arounds?

Usually I use Chrome.  And I checked already to confirm I had the latest version of Adobe Flash installed.  I also tried playing videos in Safari to see if it was a browser issue and had the same problem.   I'll try your Safari fix though and will let you know if that helps at all.  Would you know a similar fix for Chrome?  Thanks for the suggestion.

Time machine not backing up (Mac airbook) since update to Mavericks, anyone else having a problem?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Can't access iPhoto 11 backup with Time Capsule/Michine since Lion upgrade

I just upgraded to Lion OS and now whenever I try to access my iPhoto backup, it only opens my desktop folder (pages and pages) instead of my iPhoto.  I've never had trouble before - and iPhoto is active when I click on the Time Machine icon.
    Help!!

Hi Bob.  How do I "close" time machine so I can restart it (once I restart my Mac).
Then, I can't find the "browse backups" from the file menu in the upper left corner?   What am I missing?
Thanks for helping me through this!
p.s.  Also, do you know if it's actually true that we can only restore the entire iPhoto collection instead of just certain events or photos?  That seems extreme if I can't ever just restore a set of pictures.   I know I saw that restriction for iPhoto 9 or something but 11?

After time capsule 7.6 Firmware upgrade I can't set up Access Control / Timed Access using mac adresses.
I have a Time Capsule and an Airport express and when I change access control parameters on whatever one of those
two devices through Airport Utility its duplicating the same setup on the other device !
    What a mess !
I had to choose "Not Enabled" in the Access Control stup window.
Has anyone experienced same problem ?

    I did downgraded firmware to 7.5.2 ...
and the Acess Control Setting from Airport Utility is back to normal behaviour.

  • I chat problem since Leopard upgrade.

I recently upgraded to Leopard, now i chat has an issue. When I click on a buddy, a window opens with my icon and a bubble, however when I type and hit return I see nothing. In addition when my buddy responds I see his/hers icon and bubble briefly then it disappears with no text.

I've been having this same problem since I upgraded to Leopard. Also my buddy list is grey and displays all my contacts online or not. The privacy features also are not accessible and say that I can't change them because I am not logged in, but I am logged in according to the main screen. I am behind a netgear router most of the time and connect wirelessly to an airport express. My provider is Comcast. I have changed the port to 443, tried the fix listed here, tried to fix it using onyx, and I'm sure more. At this point I am using Adium because I can't get iChat to work. I want to use iChat as I really like the new features and it was one of the reasons I upgraded to Leopard in the first place.

Addresssourcesync high cpu since maverick upgrade what to do?

1 enable dead connnection detection in sqlnet.ora and/or set an idle time on the default profile.
    2 v$session last_call_et in seconds.
Generally this is a result of 'programs' connecting for every statement via jdbc et other drivers.
You can choose to configure connection pooling in conjunction with multithreaded servers.
Open_cursor is NOT an instance wide limit though, it is session wide.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

  • Since Mavericks upgrade, Time Capsule stuck deleting old backups ... for days

I have a previous generation 2TB Time Capsule shared by three of us, each with separate accounts.
I know there's not much space left on the Time Capsule and that it's therefore expected that Time Machine would make room by deleting old backups. But my account seems stuck forever on these deletions (for over 72 hours now), while the other two accounts on the Time Capsule are working just fine.
I've been through Pondini's recommendations for (a) patience and (b) finally resetting Time Machine, but on it goes.
Here is the last couple of hours of the log (filtered for this problem).  The entire log for the last 72 hours is too long to post -- but the pattern is the same, with the constant deletions barely making a dent, and sometimes in fact the space available decreases.
I'd cheerfully give up on the oldest backups, but meanwhile it's been 8 days since TC has been able to complete a backup.  (I have been cloning the drive daily with SuperDuper just to make sure I have a fallback until this is figured out.)
Hoping one of you can recommend a course of action.
Thanks in advance for any help...

  • Time Machine problems since upgrading to Snow Leopard

After Time Machine completes the backup I'm unable to do anything! Icons on the desktop disappear. I'm not able the drag the backup drive to the trash. I reboot and it says it did the most current backup but when I enter Time Machine it doesn't recognize the latest backups. Even though the dates appear showing they were backed up you can't access them.

Barry I tried you recommendations except the OS X 10.6 install and it didn't work.
I did come across this in another apple support area:
The most common cause is the TM drive (but not a Time Capsule) not being formatted correctly (even, on occasion, if TM formatted it!). Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to verify the setup:
First, select the second line for your internal HD (usually named "Macintosh HD"). Towards the bottom, the Format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled), although it might be Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).
Next, select the line for your TM partition (indented, with the name). Towards the bottom, the Format must be the same as your internal HD (above). If it isn't, you must erase the partition (not necessarily the whole drive) and reformat it with Disk Utility.
Sometimes when TM formats a drive for you automatically, it sets it to Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Do not use this unless your internal HD is also case-sensitive. All drives being backed-up, and your TM volume, should be the same. TM may do backups this way, but you could be in for major problems trying to restore to a mis-matched drive.
Last, select the top line of the TM drive (with the make and size). Towards the bottom, the Partition Map Scheme must be either GUID (preferred) or Apple Partition Map for an Intel Mac. It must be either Apple Partition Map (preferred) or GUID for a PPC Mac. If this is wrong, you must completely erase the disk and reformat it. See item 5 of the Frequently Asked Questions User Tip at the top of this forum.<<<
Barry, I've noticed that my hard drive is indeed "Journaled" and my backup drive is "Case Sensitive, Journaled." So therefore I'm presuming I do in fact need to erase my backup drive and reformat it. Am I correct in this assessment?

  • Lost time capsule historical data after upgrading to Maverick. Can I recover the data?

When I enter the time machine, I can only see historical data for the past 10 days while I have historical data that goes back to August 2012. I can still back-up however. Maverick initiated a task on the time machine
I have the new time capsule 2T

Try all options except for the thumbnails.  If that fails:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
