Time Capsule reboots about every 20-30 minutes

Hey all,
I have a Time Capsule (about 6 months old) with a cable modem plugged into it.  My wifi is being extended by a brand new Airport extreme.  I have 4 computers connecting via wifi to it.  About every 20-30 minutes the wifi signal drops from the TC, confirming this with iStumbler, and the TC has to reset.  I haven't gotten a back up to complete in quite a few days due to this.  Any ideas?
I have unplugging all ethernet devices, hard reseting it to factory defaults, and of course power cycling it.

I would firstly go back to 7.6.1 firmware.. the latest firmware has some horrible bugs .. especially in cases of extend wireless.
To go back you simply hold down the option key whilst selecting version.

  • OS completely stalls for 1-2 minutes about every 5-10 minutes

    Hi there,
I find that my OS completely stalls for 1-2 minutes about every 5-10 minutes and not clear why. I am running "top -o cpu" from the shell and dont see a process that is hogging the CPU. One issue is that top even stalls with the entire machine.
I am using an MBP duo core 2 with 2GB of memory.
rebooted from the OSX DVD, ran disk check, and the disk is fine.
What is a suggested way to isolate the trouble.
    Cheers,
    Noah

Disk Utility First Aid doesn't do as thorough a job checking as Alsoft Disk Warrior.
Use SuperDuper to copy your drive to another drive. Try running off that to test things out.
Also, if there are changes to Disk Utility in 10.5.2, using the DVD is fine if you must, but better to run off a hard drive.
Safari's cache grows huge and needs to be reset or deleted from time to time
~/Library/Caches - those are all rebuilt if needed.
Most system stability problems with cache though are in
    /Library
Try a new user account after you clean out as much temp files, logs and 'junk' as you can.
You might also install OS X to a small 20-30GB partition just for repairs and emergencies, in addition to a bootable working copy.
If you don't want SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner is also a good option for backup and cloning.
Disk Warrior though is the best way to keep a drive healthy, used regularly for preventative drive repairs along with backups.
Onyx and Tiger Cache Cleaner are designed to help with numerous system maintenance tasks. Buit-in help, terminal command 'man' pages and more.
And try a Safe Boot into your "test" account AFTER you have backups and make sure your drive really is A-OK.

  • Time Capsule Reboots if OS X Server tries to backup

I have the 500GB Time Capsule that also has 2 USB 500GB HDD's connected to it. I am backing up all the machines in 1 location. A Macbook (OS X 10.5.6) wireless, a MacMini (OS X 10.5.6) wireless, Thinkpad T61p (WinXPsp2) wireless, and MacMini (OS X Server 10.5.6) wired direct.
All the machines backup properly except the Server. The issue is when the OS X Server connects to the Time Capsule and it starts "preparing backup", the Time Capsule will reboot after about 15 seconds. It will continue to reboot unless I cancel the backup.
I tried attaching a EXT USB HDD to the Server itself and use Time Machine to backup but it too reboots the Time Capsule. Even though the Time Capsule isnt even in the backup process.
Can't figure out why Time Capsule reboots when the Server starts to backup. Any idea's or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm in a similar situation with 3 Apple laptops (Macbook Pro 15" 1 week old, Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 yrs old and iBook G4 4 years old) and Time Capsule 500GB (latest model dual WIFI, bought 2 weeks ago).
Macbook Pro and iBook did backups without problems, iBook on the 2.4GHz and the other on the 5GHz band. The Macbook Pro 17" is 5 to 10 times slower in the backups than the iBook. But - still - it works.
When I connect the second Macbook Pro (15"), Time Capsule become instable and reboot casually without reasons. It reboots casually, and frequently (from 5minutes to 30 minutes intervals).
Now: turned off the iBook and connected the computers via cable LAN to TC and the problem remain the same. These 2 Macbook Pro backing up at the same time : Time Capsule become instable. Strangely only with the 2 macbook pros, not the iBook.
I really don't manage to understand why, and from where to begin to search to solve the error. The only think I did was checking the logfile in the Time Capsule but no bessages about errors. Simply the message when it restarts.
I never arrive to complete one backup. BUT only when the 2 Macbooks Pro are doing the backup at the same time! One at time works. Slow, but works.
TC worked well during these 2 weeks until I added the Macbook Pro 15" to the WIFI net. Someone knows if one "maybe somewere faulty" computer can hang TC ?
    Other infos:
All the macs are on 10.5.7, all updates done. TC is on the 7.4.1 firmware. All the units are in the same (small) room. Except for these backups, all the computers works well (internet browsing, email, printing via TC, downloads, ...).
Appreciate any help / question that can help me to investigate
...sorry for my spaghetti english (-:

When I was editing a picture that I reposted on instagram, I hit the edit button and then a white screen appears and randomly shuts down. I have also noticed that my iPod has been crashing about every single 30 minutes! Please help!

The iPod crashing when editing a photo is a known bug in iOS 5.1.1.
    For the other problem.
    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • Time capsule spinning up every 5 minutes

I have two Time Capsule's - a 3rd gen and 4th gen both running firmware v7.6.1.  1 is used as a TC (4th gen) and the other (3rd gen) is in bridge mode simply used as a NAS.  That said, the TC only spins up every hour as expected to perform the backup.  The NAS TC in bridge mode spins up VERY briefly every 5 minutes then immediately spins down.  Resetting this TC fixes the problem for several hours then it magically returns.  My question is, since both TC's are running the same firmware, why is one behaving different from the other?  Could this issue run deeper than just firmware?

Yes, it is deeper issue.. 7.6.1 is not great on the earlier hardware..
Most people who ask about it find that flashing firmware back to 7.5.2 will fix it without causing any issues.. Simply hold the option key when you select firmware update.. and turn off the weekly check for firmware upgrades.. although it will still occasionally flash amber asking to update to the latest worstest firmware.
And it is good you are taking it seriously.. the hdd will be ruined with continuous spin up and down and particularly parking of heads which some of the green drives are renowned for.. they blow up in fairly short order after that.

  • Time Capsule spends about 30 minutes "preparing" for each backup.

My Time Capsule has two MacBooks backing up to it. One of them backs up fine; the other has a problem. It goes into "preparation" mode before each backup and it stays there for ridiculous lengths of time -- even if the machine was not used therefore nothing needs to be backed up. The TC hard disk just spins and spins.

You have continual messages.. No space left on device
Is your TC full..?? Are you using wireless to connect to the TC?
The time capsule has been  stuck in the "preparing for backup" stage indefinately: like months and months.
Note that Time Capsule is the hardware device.. Time Machine is the software that prepares the backup.. They are completely different.. !!
Open either the TM preference or the airport utility and tell us how much space is reported left on the drive.. or is the local hard disk full??
If you upgraded OS on the computer it can fail to properly clean up old backups and you will need to step in and erase the TC yourself. Or plug in a USB drive and set that as a new destination for the backup.

  • Time Machine fails about every six months

    10.8.5
    MacBook Pro 13"
Wired ethernet to Time Capsule 3rd generation
Time Machine has a distressing pattern: it seems to work like a champ for about six months. Then, it fails to back-up, stuck at "Backing Up: nnKB of nnMB" where nnKB is some small but variable number. On the MBP I've repaired disk permissions and used Disk Warrior. No change. On the backup image on the Time Capsule, I used Disk Warrior. No change. I created a new temporary image, used SuperDuper! to copy the contents of the backup image to the temporary image, erased the backup image and copied the temporary image contents back to the backup image. No change.
Previously I've just deleted the backup image and started from scratch, but I'm tired of losing my accumulated backups every six months!
    Any advice?

Start to investigate HD clones.   Time machine is a backup, not an archive or secure storage.
Some advantages of a cloned HD:
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.
Time Machine is a system backup, not a data archive
Important data you “don’t dare lose” should not be considered ultimately safe, or ideally stored (at the very least not as sole copy of same) on your Time Machine backup. Hourly and daily fluctuations of your system OS, applications, and software updates is the perfect focus for the simple user to conduct ‘click it and forget it’ backups of the entire system and files on the Macbook HD.
Bootable clones are the choice of professionals and others in that Time Machine cannot be booted from and requires a working HD to retrieve data from (meaning another computer). Your vital data needs to be and should be ‘frozen’ on some form of media storage, either in a clone, as an archived HD containing important files, or on DVD blank archival media.
A file that is backed up to Time Machine is unsafe in that if that file is deleted off the computer by accident or lost otherwise, that file will likewise vanish from Time Machine as it reflects changes on the internal computer HD/SSD.

  • Time Capsule in Yosemite disconnects half a minute after power up

Have recently upgrade to Yosemite (OS X 10.10.1). Unfortunately now Time Capsule does not make any more backups, as it seems to loose connectivity to the wifi after about 30-60 seconds. My router is a Cisco EPC3925.
Connecting the TC to my iMac via LAN cable works well and backups can be made.

This could be the computer and not the TC at all.. If you upgrade installed Yosemite onto the computer then wireless issues are not uncommon.
Factory reset the TC and redo the setup.
Use all very short names.. eg TCgenx base station name. (x can be the actual base station Gen number.. eg latest one is 5).
Wireless please use different names for both bands.. so TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
Start with no security at all and run a test.. connect the computer to one band wireless name and then the other and see if the TM will pick up again.
You should of course reset TM and reset its target disk.. it will say it needs to restart the backup but in fact will discover the old one when it starts and continue.
Once you determine that everything runs right.. or at least works on one band or the other.. please use WPA2 Personal security with a 8-20 character password.. pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.

  • Time Capsule is about full, now do I delete files?

My time capsule is just about filled.  How do I go in and delete some (only some) files without resetting the whole thing?

Time Machine will automatically delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.  At least, that is what it is supposed to do.
If you do not want to lose any old backups, then you will need to add another Time Capsule or another hard drive attached to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
Trying to delete older backups manually will take forever, and it rarely clears much space at all.

  • If i reset time capsule, how about data on disk?

    hi everyone..
i have time capsule 2TB, if i reset by press little button on back of unit, how about my backup data on time capsule? isn't format?
    thank you

The reset button will only reset the network settings on the Time Capsule.
A reset has absolutely nothing to do with the data on the Time Capsule hard drive. The only way that you would lose that would be to perform a completely separate Erase Disk operation, then confirm again that you do really do want to Erase Disk.

  • Time Capsule backs up every hours and takes 1/2 to back up, it slows down all funtions on computer to a crawl.

I have the time capsule with the ethernet cord running from it, this is the way my husband set it up. In the last month, when time machine backs up it takes forever and then repeats itself every hour. I can't get anything done because it slows everything down, or I am unable to open applications. I read in discussions what to do and have not had any luck. I checked my speeds: download 10.58pbps and upload 4.85 mpbs. My husband pays for preminum cable for fast service. I don't know how to fix this issue, or perhaps I don't know how to ask the right question. Can anyone help?

    This is a hard one..
With Time Machine turned off, what speed do you get using a speed test service to the internet?
Remove the TC and connect directly to the cable modem and check the speed.. if the TC is slow as a router, then there is some issue.
I see you are on SL.. did you update the firmware on the TC to 7.6.x recently..
There does seem to be some bugs in the latest firmware for some people. I would downgrade the firmware back to 7.5.2. I would also check if the TC isn't almost full. That hugely slows things down.
Do a full factory reset and redo the setup.
Otherwise I think it can be worth getting a different wireless router, and simply bridge the TC to use for backup only.. I think that is what I would do in your situation.

  • TIme Capsule reboots (crashes?) when MBP wakes from standby

If I put my MBP to standby with a VPN connection active, and wake it from standby several hours later, the Time Capsule instantly reboots, dropping all connections. This doesn't occur when the VPN connection wasn't active when putting the MBP to standby.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?

I don't have the exact same problem BUT my TM reboots regularly when I am using a VPN link.
Any suggestions how to stop this happening?

  • IPhone 4 keeps rebooting itself every 1-2 minutes.

    Hi!
Yesterday I got my white iphone 4 parts that I changed out of my black parts through a guide on youtube. Everything went well and put in place, I turn it on and everything worked. Five minutes later my cellphone rebooted itself and I did not think it was anything to worry about. After that it just kept rebooting every minute. I thought it was wrong on the white parts, so I switched back to the black parts again but it continues even now. It works 5min until it gets "No Service" then the screen goes off and the phone reboots. There is also something odd about the battery meter, sometimes it can be 0% and sometimes 100% when it started again.
I have tried everything. Took everything out and put it back in again, done a clean restore from itunes, etc.. Do not know what more I can do.
Anyone know what to do or what the problem is?
    Thanks!

Seems like you are out of luck here. Your warranty is voided considering that you changed the black parts to the white parts. You even tried restoring, which that did not help. Even if you go to the Apple store, it is very unlikely that they will replace it, just because white models are not out and they can check what the actual color of the phone was through the serial number and the model number.

  • Time Capsule reboots when accessing many files

    Dear other Mac users,
My TC is showing a weird behavior since yesterdy. I got my TC on tuesday of this this week and immediatly started uploading all data from an old HDD to the TC after I setup the TC according to my needs with the airport utility.
I'm using accounts to access TC's HDD and all my media files (music, pictures, ...) are in separate folders within the "shared" folder that can be accessed by all accounts.
I tried to import all pictures into my picasa lib what worked fine. Then I imported all music files into my iTunes library and this worked fine for a subset of my music libary on the TC (didn't import all at once).
Yesterdy (thursday) I tried to add all other music files I left out during the initial iTunes import and after a while my TC went to a yellow/orange light and all services (networking, internet, harddrive, printer) went offline. The TC seems to crash and reboot itself. After esimated 30 secs everything is back up and running.
This behavior got even more extrem now. Picasa worked fine at first but now crashes more frequently. Seems with every thumbnail update or access on a number of files the TC crashes and reboots.
Same with iTunes as soon as I try to import a number of music files from the TC iTunes hangs and the TC reboots.
Interestingly, accessing only one file by f.i. browsing with the finder and opening it solely, everything works fine and I can watch videos or open picures (even big videos are played perfectly).
How comes that access to many files on my TC causes a reboot?
    -Michael

UPDATE: I checked the data on the TC drive more intensively and here is my final opinion about that whole problem:
    - There are several files that got corrupted (no idea how that happened, apple probably didn't do a good job here)
    - All other files can be accessed perfectly, the corrupted files can't be read and cause a TC crash+reboot
    - Corruption might be solvable by running a HFS repair (fsck_hfs)
Does anyone know if theres a chance to run a HFS repair on the TC.
Is any drive repair software on the TC firmware?
Can the drive be accessed directly (instead of using AFP) f.i via iSCSI?
    Any help here?
    regards
