Time Capsule Reboots if OS X Server tries to backup

I have the 500GB Time Capsule that also has 2 USB 500GB HDD's connected to it. I am backing up all the machines in 1 location. A Macbook (OS X 10.5.6) wireless, a MacMini (OS X 10.5.6) wireless, Thinkpad T61p (WinXPsp2) wireless, and MacMini (OS X Server 10.5.6) wired direct.
All the machines backup properly except the Server. The issue is when the OS X Server connects to the Time Capsule and it starts "preparing backup", the Time Capsule will reboot after about 15 seconds. It will continue to reboot unless I cancel the backup.
I tried attaching a EXT USB HDD to the Server itself and use Time Machine to backup but it too reboots the Time Capsule. Even though the Time Capsule isnt even in the backup process.
Can't figure out why Time Capsule reboots when the Server starts to backup. Any idea's or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm in a similar situation with 3 Apple laptops (Macbook Pro 15" 1 week old, Macbook Pro 17" 2.5 yrs old and iBook G4 4 years old) and Time Capsule 500GB (latest model dual WIFI, bought 2 weeks ago).
Macbook Pro and iBook did backups without problems, iBook on the 2.4GHz and the other on the 5GHz band. The Macbook Pro 17" is 5 to 10 times slower in the backups than the iBook. But - still - it works.
When I connect the second Macbook Pro (15"), Time Capsule become instable and reboot casually without reasons. It reboots casually, and frequently (from 5minutes to 30 minutes intervals).
Now: turned off the iBook and connected the computers via cable LAN to TC and the problem remain the same. These 2 Macbook Pro backing up at the same time : Time Capsule become instable. Strangely only with the 2 macbook pros, not the iBook.
I really don't manage to understand why, and from where to begin to search to solve the error. The only think I did was checking the logfile in the Time Capsule but no bessages about errors. Simply the message when it restarts.
I never arrive to complete one backup. BUT only when the 2 Macbooks Pro are doing the backup at the same time! One at time works. Slow, but works.
TC worked well during these 2 weeks until I added the Macbook Pro 15" to the WIFI net. Someone knows if one "maybe somewere faulty" computer can hang TC ?
Other infos:
All the macs are on 10.5.7, all updates done. TC is on the 7.4.1 firmware. All the units are in the same (small) room. Except for these backups, all the computers works well (internet browsing, email, printing via TC, downloads, ...).
Appreciate any help / question that can help me to investigate
...sorry for my spaghetti english (-:

  • Using Time Capsule with Linksys WPS54GU2 print server

Just curious if anyone else has had issues with using the Time Capsule with the above print server. I have been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work with WEP encryption turned on (WEP or no encryption is all the Linksys supports). Before I upgraded to the Time Capsule, I was using a 40-bit encryption key and everything was fine. It appears that you can only use 128-bit encryption on WEP with the Time Capsule, so I had to change keys. I haven't been able to ping the print server unless it's wired or encryption is turned off.
On top of this, I've also tried to run the old router with 128-bit WEP using the same key, and that doesn't work either, so it would seem to point to the print server as the culprit. I'm running the latest firmware on both devices.

Did you ever get this to work? I've got a similar Print Server and its WPS54G. PS was working wireless and now after adding the Time Capsule it no longer does.

  • My Time Capsule has stopped working after I tried to configure an extended wifi network

My Time Capsule was working fine until I tried to configure it with an extended bridge. Now either the amber light is solid or the solid amber comes on for awhile and then goes completely out.
The AirPort Utility says that there is no internet connection, the DNS settings are wrong, and that the disk need to be repaired. Using Disk Utility, the Time Capsule does not even show up so that I can repair it.
I am running OSX 10.7.5, and besides the Time Capsule I have a Vonage Motorola (VT2442-VD) for VOIP, which of course is not working because it was connected behind the Time Capsule.
I'm in Italy and cannot call Apple directly since I now do not have phone service.
Any suggestions how I can check/repair the Time Capsule, and then configure it properly to my satellite broadband?
    Thanks for you help.

How old is the TC?? The LED should never go solid amber.. that indicates disk failure.
Or completely out.. that indicates power supply failure.
As a note you cannot extend wireless to a non apple wireless router... you can only plug in by ethernet and use the TC to create a wireless network.. this can have the same name as the main router,, same SSID in other words and same security but set to different channel..

  • Is it possible to install mysql-server on a Time Capsule and makes it a server mysql database?

Is it possible to install the server-msyql the time capsule to make it a server database?

The Time Capsule is not a proper computer.  It has a very stripped down embedded OS running a file server that offers AFP and SMB access to the files stored on the Time Capsule.  And even that is primarily to support the Time Machine backup system - the fact that you happen to be able to store other files on a Time Capsule as a result is a (not particularly great) bonus.
You cannot install a database server on a Time Capsule.  In theory, you could install a database server somewhere else and use the Time Casule as the location of the data files...but you shouldn't (and you shouldn't want to do that either).

I am having trouble using my time capsule to back up. I tried repairing through "first aid" Disk 4s2 failed and I have been directed to erase. What is in this disk? Should I erase it??

Only you know what is on the disk.. if you have been running TM to the TC then it will have your backups.. are they important?? Otherwise it will be what you..or others in the house have copied to it.. is that important?
If the first aid has failed the disk then it could be a good idea to erase it.
Does the disk mount in finder so you can see the main directory?

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.

  • Time Capsule spends about 30 minutes "preparing" for each backup.

My Time Capsule has two MacBooks backing up to it. One of them backs up fine; the other has a problem. It goes into "preparation" mode before each backup and it stays there for ridiculous lengths of time -- even if the machine was not used therefore nothing needs to be backed up. The TC hard disk just spins and spins.

You have continual messages.. No space left on device
Is your TC full..?? Are you using wireless to connect to the TC?
The time capsule has been  stuck in the "preparing for backup" stage indefinately: like months and months.
Note that Time Capsule is the hardware device.. Time Machine is the software that prepares the backup.. They are completely different.. !!
Open either the TM preference or the airport utility and tell us how much space is reported left on the drive.. or is the local hard disk full??
If you upgraded OS on the computer it can fail to properly clean up old backups and you will need to step in and erase the TC yourself. Or plug in a USB drive and set that as a new destination for the backup.

  • What does the message mean time capsule already in use when it refueses to backup?

What does the message mean time capsule already in use when it refueses to backup?

    Just the network is cranky..
Simple first step.. restart the TC.. ie unplug the power cord.. count to 10.. plug it back in.
Second step if that fails.. restart the network.. off everything.. restart in order.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.
Finally if you are prepared to fight you can load 5.6 utility onto Mountain Lion and do a disconnect all users.. or a few other ways.. turn off file sharing and turn it back on.
The issue being TM did not dismount the sparsebundle correctly.

  • Is it possible to use my Time Capsule as an iTunes Media Server?

I've bought a macbook air, which is awesome, but a bit lacking in space, it's already filling up.
At the same time I bought a 2TB time capsule. Although I think the back up features are great, I always had the intention that I'd be able to use the Time Capsule as a wireless, and even remotely accessible, personal cloud, to store some of my bigger files. Namely, my iTunes library and my iPhotos library.
I've been into the Apple Store, and the genius there told me it was a simple as copying the two libraries onto the TC, and then redirecting the apps to look at those libraries. Dead easy.
In theory, this creates a perfect system. I realise there might be a bit of lag retrieving stuff, especially if I'm trying to get a movie off the TC while I'm travelling. But if I've got half a day spare to download it, then it's great to have that option if I've forgotten to copy it to my Mac Book before I leave.
In practice, it doesn't work. Because the TC is being used to keep a back up as well, I can only copy the libraries into the Data folder. And I've read somewhere that this can confuse issues a little bit. Now when I try to navigate to the libraries, connection to the Time Capsule always fails.
I realise I could probably achieve this by plugging an external hardrive into the Time Capsule. But I've got two terabytes of space on the TC, it'll take forever to fill that up with just back ups. I don't feel I should have to buy another hardrive, when I've got a TB and a half of free space waiting to be used.
The only idea I can think of is if I partition the TC harddrive, keeping one half for the back ups, and one half for my media library.
Has anyone actually succedded in doing this? Any ideas or help anyone can offer, this is getting really frustrating, and if it doesn't work, I think I'll have to return the Time Capsule, or scrap the idea of backing up, and just use it as an iTunes server instead.
    Thanks.

    Hi Latitude Journey
Make sure you do the following if you are planning to load all your library on TC:
Step 1: make sure that you tell iTunes where your media folder is located, under preferences, advanced, chose the location of your media folder (assuming you are using iTunes 10+.
Step 2: Once you are done telling iTunes where your media folder is located (music, etc) make sure you go to users & groups under system preferences (assuming you are running Lion or Mountain Lion OSX) and choose login items, then click the + sign and locate your time capsule from the shared drive section in finder, just chose it (no specific folder) just any folder.
the reason why you should do this, is that if it happen that you restart your mac! iTunes will try to look for the drive that has your media/music that you set earlier in step 2: , and since TC is not an actual NAS drive, it is more like a shared drive, it will take few seconds for the hard drive on it to load, where iTunes will not be able to locate it before it is ready, and thus it will revert to the default location of the media folder which is under music/itunes/itunes media/, and eventually none of your songs will actually work since they are on the TC and not your mac.
doing what i told to do in step 2: will make sure that your TC hard drive is ready before your iTunes try to locate the media folder, where you will be able to play your library without any issues.
failing to do so, most probably you will face the problem where you try to play songs in iTunes and finding that they have exclamation mark next to them, which means that they are missing from the library.
my music library is all located on my Time Capsule, and iTunes runs on my Mac mini (with home sharing enabled), and my iTunes is set to lunch on start up under system preferences/users & groups/login items/.
My mac mini act as a server (don't worry about your mac going to sleep, it will wake up once you try to access your media from other devices) assuming that you have the option wake on LAN enabled under network in system preferences.
    This is my setup.
    - Mac mini mid 2011, running Mountain Lion and latest iTunes set to launch on startup in case of computer power on or restart so i don't have to worry about launching it manually.
    - Time capsule 2 TB, used as network shared hard drive
    - MacBook Pro early 2011 running Mountain Lion and latest iTunes
    - 2 iPads
    - iPhones 4s
    - Apple TV 1 and Apple TV 2
all my devices having home sharing enabled under the same account.
i can access my music library from any of my devices easily and problem free.
hope this will help you and other users.
    Many thanks

  • Time Capsule and File Sharing on Server

I am in the process of setting up Server at home. I've run into a snag with using a Time Capsule as my router and backup drive and also enabling file sharing through Server. When adding File Sharing as a service in the Server application, a warning comes up to disable disk sharing at the router before forwarding the ports. The problem is that if I disable disk sharing on the Time Capsule, I can no longer access my Time Capsule drive (for obvious reasons). I was reading another post that discussed enabling disk share from the router and then adding a port for file sharing manually, but that did not seem to work as I cannot remotely access my files.
I am running Server on an iMac which is running Mavericks. The Time Capsule says it's "version 7.6.4". It's a 2TB drive. The iMac is a 2012 system with 1TB drive. I also have a Drobo and a few external drives connected.
    I appreciate any advice! Thanks!

If I turn on disk sharing (even without the LAN option) I can select the disk to back up, but then I cannot share files using my server due to the port conflict.
I find this hard to follow.. there is no port conflict on a local lan with sharing.. that is not even possible.
If you have several Macs for instance and set each to share.. they are all able to share.. there is no port conflicts.. You do not need all the devices on different ports because they have different names.
You only get into port conflicts when you have external access turned on.. and are having to port forward. Because the network is identified by a single public IP.. in that case you can port translate but you don't do that in a LAN.
There has to be something screwy in the server version of Mavericks for this to happen.
I am trying to think of way around it.. but I will do a bit of google work first on if others are having issues with latest server version.
What about giving me a few screenshots of the setup...
Network on the server.. and network on the TC ..
And run netstat scan on the server to see the local IP addresses of everything.

  • Time  Capsule file sharing VS Leopard Server

I just bought a new 1 TB Time Capsule (TC). My goal was to use it as a time machine hard drive for my Leopard Server.
As soon as I start Enable File Sharing on TC, there is a conflict with the AFP Port (548) for my server. I can only do one or the other. I understand that I can change the AFP port but I don't think it is a good solution for me.
Is there others ways to reach that drive ?
    Thank you

Hello, the problem is to activate Disk Sharing. Because I have forwarded the AFP Port 548 to my Leopard OS X server in Time Capsule, as soon as I try to turn on Disk Sharing on Time Capsule I get the following message:
Enabling "Enable file sharing" conflicts with one of your part port mappings. The port mapping has been disabled. Please update its public port to continue using it.
That's the part I wish I could avoid. Changing the public port of AFP wold mean to change all external client (my family
I have tried to turn on Bonjour in the Disk pane and then turn off disk sharing and I did received a message saying to configure Airport-Time Capsule - Edit - Dynamic global Hostname. I will be trying that.
Thank you for the "Bonjour" Hint

  • Any help with a Time Capsule install and Mac Mini server screen share?

Installed a Time Capsule, now I can't access my mac mini server.  I see the files/folders, but cannot screen share with the mini from my macbook pro.  Any help?  Error below when trying to use the "screen share" button in Finder.  Macbook Pro and Mac Mini are using Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
Connection Failed Error: Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly.
Please help, I'm really stuck on this one!

Try removing the TC and see if the problem disappears.
Screen Sharing has a checkered histroy looking back through the posts..

There are many discussions about failing after changes in Lion.. I haven't seen the equivalent ML yet.. the TC may not be root cause, just the initiator of the problem.
It could be the BTMM associated with the TC.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express Printer Server Issues

Please Help!! I've been printing on both my Lexmark and HP printers for over a year and all of a sudden, just recently, my network is not communicating with the server for the printers. I have a time capsule downstairs and it communicates with an airport express up with the printers. I've tried re-booting everything, including my modem (cable modem) connection.
What is wrong? What can I do? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Try to isolate the problem. Connect your Lexmark or your HP printer straight to your computer, bypassing your server. See if you can get any of the printers to communicate with your computer.

  • Time Capsule: Problem connecting to the Server

    Specs:
    MacBook Pro (Retina, 15, Late 2013), 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048MB, 1TB SSD, OSX Mavericks 10.9.4 (13E28)
    Time Capsule 2013, 3TB, Firmware 7.7.3
"There was a problem connecting to the server "Xxxxx's Airport Time Capsule".
Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator."
I can access my Time Machine, but I cannot backup. Everytime I try to I get the above message. I had this problem in the past, but opening Time Machine System Preferences and Selecting and deselecting the current disk seemed to fix it. It was an odd fix, but every time I went into the settings to get to the bottom of the problem it resolved itself before I could get to the bottom of the issue. I thought I was imagining it at times! The Time Capsule is also giving my network sporadic connectivity issues to the internet. It will maintain a perfect wireless connection, but not provide a connection to the internet. Turning my notebooks WiFi on and off seems to resolve the issue upon reconnection.
What's going on and how do I fix it!
I also have AppleCare for the Time Capsule and would like to not get too crazy or involved with the solutions. Nothing that voids the warranty!

We would not suggest warranty voiding fixes on any device that has warranty.. we only suggest those when Apple refuse to help or the device is older.
    Reset your TC to factory.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup of the TC.. using all short names.. with no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Apple changed Mavericks default network protocol to SMB and it has tighter rules.
eg.. A good name is TCgen5
A good name for the wireless is TCwifi
Use whatever you like.. up to max 20 characters but short and sweet is better.
Once you do that, mount the disk in finder manually.
Go, Connect to server.. From the top menu area.
    AFP://TCgen5.local
OR even better use its IP address.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (but it must be static which usually means in router mode).
Once you have found the network resource.. put in your disk password and save it to the keychain. All passwords should be pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers and 10-20 characters.
Reset Time Machine to the new path to the TC.
It will say it will start a new backup but in fact it will discover the old one and simply continue the backup.
If it still fails.. it is faulty and should be returned.
The drop out of the internet even when wireless is working points to faulty WAN connection which is a serious bug on these.
