Time capsule running at 200kbps in bridge mode netgear running at 2500kbps

i have my 1tb time capsule bridged from my netgear wireless router and has worked fine at 2500kbps for the last month since i bought it, but the last few days it it has dropped to 200kbps. if i connect to the netgear i get 2500kbps again. i've changed lead and updated the software but it is still the same.
please help i don't know what to do

Set up your "main" router to use the OpenDNS servers, and the Time Capsule will automatically pick up those settings. No configuration is needed on the Time Capsule.

  • Airport Time Capsule will only operate in Bridge mode

Im a Verizon dsl customer and am trying to configure an Airport Time Capsule with a Westell 2200 modem.  The only workable configuration I can come up with is bridge mode.  Every other configuration has some sort of conflict with the modem.  I have tried to set the modem in bridge mode, with DHCP service both on and off, and connect with the Airport Time Capsule, but was unable to get an internet connection ( I used the password and login for my main email account - perhaps I should have used the vzid but I don't know the password - in the modem I see it says "set by verizon").
I never had this problem with any other router I have used.
    Any ideas?  Thanks, Klaus

Very sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I don't get the dns service from the westell 2200, where will I get it from?  The routher asks for this address during the PPPoE setup.
    Thanks,

DNS should come from the PPPoE connection itself automatically. If you have to, define servers such as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. If you have about a half an hour of time where you can leave your machine idle, I would recommend running the DNS Benchmark program from Gibson Research to choose the best (fastest) servers for you.
    https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
Pick the two consistently fast servers. The program will give you some general recommendations when it completes. I recommend setting up the Custom nameserver list when theprogram asks for that.

  • Can a Time capsule run a VPN service??

Can a Time capsule run a VPN service??

There is no inbuilt vpn in the TC, but it should support vpn passthrough from a router or client computer running vpn software. It is important that the TC should have the public IP address on its wan or be used in bridge to another router, otherwise you will find with double NAT it almost impossible to get vpn working.

  • Can I use the new time capsule running 10.68 on my Imac?

Can I use the new time capsule running 10.68 on my Imac?  I thinking of buying my first Time Capsule and wanted to get the new one.  Is it reqiured for me to upgrade my OS first?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can use the Time Capsule with your iMac. The problem is that you need AirPort Utility 6.3 to set up the Time Capsule, and it needs OS X 10.7 or later.
If you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, you can connect the Time Capsule to the power adapter, open Settings > Wi-Fi, and set up the Time Capsule through it. Then, you will be able to connect to the Time Capsule.
If you haven't got any other device, upgrade OS X. Open the Mac App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. While it's being downloaded, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will appear, so follow its steps. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, install AirPort Utility 6.3, open it in /Applications/Utilities and follow the steps to set up the Time Capsule

  • Can I use back to my mac to access two daisy chained time capsules running on my network alone or do I also need a mac running on the same network?

I have a DSL modem router (HUWAI ECHO LIFE 520) with uPNP enabled. The first time capsule´s wan is connected to that router the second time capsules wan is connected to the first time capsules lAN. The router looks at the first time capsule as DMZ and passes traffic on the public IP through to it. There are airport expressses either end of the chain. The network works a charm. I would like to have both time capsules visible through Back to My Mac, which isn´t currently working. Back to My Mac is activated on all devices involved. What else to try?
    Arved

Both TC should be in bridge mode. Is that what you have done? You cannot use the TC in router mode as it will cause double NAT problems.
Can you access one of the TC? Or do both fail to show up?

  • My time capsule runs very slowly and keeps disconnecting my internet connection, can anyone help me please?

Hello all I have recently pulled out my 3TB Time capsule and attempted to use it to back up my all Mac network, starting with just my desktop. I gave up on it before and started using Time Machine with WD EHD's which work fine. The reason that I gave up was that the Time Capsule kept freezing and hanging and I couldn't rely on it for a back up. I have reset it to factory settings and reconnected it as per the instructions, using it to extend my network, the hub is a BT infinity setup. Anyway it looks like it is going to run, then keeps shutting down my internet connection and I suspect it is taking longer to run the backup than it should. Has anyone else had this problem or can help please?

What model is the 3TB TC??
If the computer is using Yosemite the setup of the TC needs to be right. It can also be hardware issue if you are talking about the previous gen4.
Here is a list of things that can help with yosemite.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.

  • How can I find my printer's ip connected (ethernet cable) to a time capsule which is in network extending mode ?

I got a network printer connected to a Time Capsule which extends my wireless home network. But I can't manage to find out it's IP address nor i manage to find it on the network ! Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a way to tell Time Capsule which is the IP of the network printer ?
Hope somebody can help me out !

Most printers can print their status page.. on the status page is the current IP. I personally don't buy network printers that don't have a small LCD with enough menu to set things like IP address. And reveal the current IP.
Is the printer set to dhcp? If so it will get an IP from the TC.
Apple removed useful aspects of the old v5 utility which would give you a listing off all IP addresses passed out by the TC or connected to it.
You can however do a netstat scan from your computer.
In finder type in network utility into the search (apple have hidden it in a stupidly obscure location)
In network utility run a netstat scan which should pick up the printer.
One aspect of this, is that if the printer is in a deep sleep, power saving mode.. you may not pick it up.. certainly you should make sure the printer is awake and ready to run.. even if you need to reboot it.
There will be a problem if the printer is manually set to the wrong IP range.. then it won't come up at all. To fix that you will need to actually read the printer manual.. and find out how to reset it to its defaults and start again.

  • Time capsule: use as extender or bridge?

    hi everybody,
I am going to buy a refurb Time Capsule from the apple store primarily for time machine backups for my iMac but I need to know whether I could use it also as a wireless extender or in bridge mode, as I'm not sure which would be best. The wireless signal reaches the back of the house but the signal is not that strong.
My setup is as follows:- I use BT infinity, the main socket is in the lounge to which is connected the BT modem and wireless is through an Airport Extreme. An Apple tv resides here.
My main iMac [2011] is in the office/back bedroom with my HP 5510 wireless printer. It is a bungalow btw, so only one floor.
At present it is on a wired connection through home-plugs, with the wireless turned off. The printer is wired to the iMac. I replaced the BT Homehub with the Extreme as I used to have problems printing from my iPad/iPhone/MacBook as it couldn't find the printer sometimes. But the Extreme has solved it and I can print from them from anywhere in the house.
Obviously the time capsule will be used to backup the iMac, as currently I don't have any backup at all. But I would like to use the wireless capabilities to boost the signal in the office/bedroom and also out into the garden outside. So...
A] Should I extend the wireless signal just using the TC connected to the AE ?
B] Could I use the home-plugs to connect the TC to the network and setup using exactly the same settings as the AE, would that be bridge mode? If so should the TC be connected directly to the BT modem or to the AE?
    Hope that explains everything! Thanks.

As long as you use all apple routers.. AE and TC will be fine doing either wireless extend.. what we normally call wireless repeater.
Or you can setup a roaming network.. use the homeplugs (EOP adapters for non-Americans)..
B] Could I use the home-plugs to connect the TC to the network and setup using exactly the same settings as the AE, would that be bridge mode? If so should the TC be connected directly to the BT modem or to the AE?
This is called roaming.. and everything depends on which is the router.. if the BT modem is bridged.. then AE is the router and everything plugs into that.. do not use the modem ports except for the one link to the AE.
If the AE is bridged then you can plug into the BT router or the AE.. makes no difference as the AE is transparent on the network.
Anyway the important thing to realise is you can do this any way you like.
It is also possible to avoid a lot of problems by not using a TC..
For iMac.. I would always recommend an external drive for TM. It is faster, cheaper and more reliable. TM works quite differently to network drive.. very useful for laptop where you don't want to plug and unplug external drives all the time.. but for a desktop computer.. a drive plugged in.. that is the best. Use the fastest/cheapest... ie USB3 is best both fast and cheap.. FW800 is much better than USB2 but still costs more and is probably money down the drain long term.. it is a dead interface. Thunderbolt is best speed wise.. expensive though.
You can use any wireless router whatsoever as a roaming does not require apple to apple link. A cheap TP-Link like WDR3600 makes an excellent unit. A refuribished extreme or even second hand one .. Gen 5 from ebay can be really good buy.. !!

  • 4Th Generation Time Capsule Running Backup very Slow

I am having a problem with my 4th generation time capsule as it is running very slow , it shows that i need to backup 151 Gb data and for the last 2 days the device backup only 150 mb, pls advise what is the problem? setup of the wireless network seems fine to me without any problem
    please help

When you use ethernet, make sure your wireless is turned off in the computer.
It can be worthwhile isolating the TC to the Computer so there is nothing else happening.
Also for Mavericks ensure you have ipv6 set correctly to link-local.
A 100GB backup certainly should not take 20hours..
Although the 2008 (gen1 TC is much slower than later versions).
A first backup of the computer must deal with loads and loads of little files, as a warning can go slow.
A different backup software will be just the same.. it is the speed over network and handling small files that is the issue. Once that first backup is done the later incrementals should not be a problem though.

  • Macbook pro and time capsule run hot

How hot should the laptop be getting? It only does this intermittently and more so up by the speakers, and the speakers are not always running. The Time capsule is on all the time and is hot all the time. Not so hot as to melt the plastic etc but I was interested in the amount of heat these should be releasing. Any information would help to ease my mind. I am new to Apple products and clearly heat is not unusual for the PC world. Thank you Douglas

If you simply want a cooler Mac, download smcFanControl - this program lets you set a minimum speed for the fans. I set it to 2400 - 2000 is the standard minimum temp that the MacBook Pro sets, and IMO it's just not enough.
I live in a pretty hot country so the MacBook Pro would get too hot to touch frequently. smcFanControl allows you to set a few different profiles, so when you think your computer is too hot, you can just switch to another profile and set min fan speed to, say 3000 or 4000 RPM. It only really starts to make noise at 4000.
Apple obviously had to strike a balance between noise and heat, and IMO they allow the MBP to run too hot. It will eventually damage components. I lost a hard drive and I am pretty sure it was due to heat because I had left the MBP unattended and charging, and it just felt extremely hot to the touch. The next day, the hard disk was dead...

  • The reason why time capsule running so slow

Temperature is the killer of Time Capsule!
I am live in Hong Kong, a very hot city, and using 500GB TC for a few weeks and experiencing all the problem other user mentioned already in this Forum. Base on my experience, if I turn on Time Capsule and running in Room temperature, it only running slowly and slowly and slowly! But after i turn on my room air-conditioner, TC working fine without any problem~~~
The reason why TC can't work in room temperature (I guess) is TC using Server HardDisk which designed for high performance server and running in GOOOOOOOOD temperature controller environment~~
If you don't have or don't want to turn on air-con. for TC, turn to put a big FAN near your TC and I hope it help.

Read the specs of TC - it clearly states that max operating temperature shouldn't exceed 35 degrees Celsius. Place a thermometer next to TC and monitor the temperature - you'll see that area around TC is always few to several degrees higher than your room temperature in any other place. So, if you are not using AC then your room temperature easy gets now to well above 30 C when outside is exactly 30 C. All your computer stuff and your body are generating heat and adding to the temperature. Thus you are for sure exceed max allowed operating temperature of 35 C around TC.
Also TC needs humidity below 80% (non condensing) to operate - at this moment there is 91% humidity in HK and if you are not running AC and keep windows open then you are again trying to operate TC in humidity well above max allowed.
    TC's Environmental requirements:
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Relative humidity (operational): 20% to 80% (non-condensing)
Keep AC on at all time in HK my friend, except in the winter when humidity goes down. And keep good device monitoring temperature and humidity next to TC as well.

  • Will the new 2TB time capsule run hot like the old one?

Could someone please tell me if the new 2TB time capsule that just came out will run hot like the old version? I have been thinking about getting the time capsule for quite some time, but I am concerning that it will get overheated to the point that all the data stored on it would be lost. I have seen several posts over the internet mentioning this problem. Please help. Thank you so much.

I just replaced my old TC with the new one. It took all night to transfer 149gb from my Imac to the new drive by wireless N. I took the old one to work and hooked it up in my office for a back up of a Mac Mini. At home we had 3 Mac's attached to the TC and it was always hot.I even found some sockets from an old socket set to raise it up so air could get under it to help cool it down a little. The new one is just warm with the same computers hooked up. The old one at work is also only warm to the touch with the one Mac hooked to it. I'm very happy with the new one and love the dual band.

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express as a bridge

I am using a Time Capsule as my wireless router upstairs, and I would like to set up an Airport Express as a bridge so that I can connect my Xbox 360 to my network (to play Xbox Live and stream Netflix and iTunes, etc.). Do I have to do something to the Time Capsule to get this to work? Or can I just use a laptop downstairs (where the Xbox is) to configure the Airport Express as a bridge? I looked in the manual settings of the Time Capsule but all I see is for it to extend a network, not to allow anything else to extend the network it's already creating.

+In the Airport Utility they are both configured to "Join a wireless network" and have checked the box to "Allow Ethernet clients". Very stable connection.+
Not sure if you were aware that you have the option to configure the AXs to "extend a wireless network" as well. The ethernet port is also active in the "extend" configuration. If you need more wireless coverage, this is a nice feature of the AX(n).
Then again, if you don't need the additional wireless coverage and things are working well as you indicate, you might want to just leave things alone.

  • Time capsule running slow and backing up whole disc each time

    I am on a Powerbook running Mac 0SX 10.6.8.
My time capsule back ups now take hours and appear to be backing up hundreds of files and many GBts each time, even if I run it straight after a previous back up with no file changes made.
Does anyone have any suggestions of anything I can try?
    Thanks
    Tom

Load the widget to get actual log info from the TM.
