Time Capsule Security Setup

I've just had my time capsule for a couple of days now, and ignoring problems with the fan being on constantly which I am tackling seperately, I have a questions about security and how I wish to use the shared HD.
I wish to have the drive set up so that various users can back up with time machine to the drive, as well as using some of the space as extended storage for my computer (I'm out of HD space), so I would like this space to be only accessible by me. I would also like to have a section of the drive to be used as a shared storage space for music and general files that everyone can access. If the accounts option on the TC has a shared account then that would probably suffice.
The other option is perhaps partitions? Can i set the access up separately on different partitions so that one partition is shared and then each user has a folder on the other partition?

No, Setting up user accounts just sets permissions to a folder in the name of the account created. It does not create accounts in exactly the same way OSX creates them. e.g. with drop box, shared, public etc..
TC sets up a 'virtual' partition.. i.e. does not divide up the drive in a conventional sense with partition mapping, but sets rules to folders. This a is more flexible way of managing users and files as it does not automatically restrict users to a particular amount of data (disk quota), it just allows all users to use the amount of space available until the physical drive is full.
Setting up an account with the name John Doe (for example) will create a folder on the TC with that name. When you mount the folder it appears like a Hard Disk on the desktop. You can set permissions on accounts to allow everyone to access. Worth setting up a new account and calling it 'Shared Items' or 'Exchange' or something like that, then allowing everyone to read & write to it. This will give folks the option to mount that virtual partition when they log into their own account.

  • Time capsule "Security Key"

According to Netflix, I need a "Security Key" for Time capsule so it can connect to my internet  ready TV.  What is that and how can I find it?  I could communicate with the TV until I had to do a hard reset on the router to make the network work.  My network is working fine otherwise.   Thanks for any help.

You should not change the password on a wireless network unless you also change the name of the wireless network. Various devices store the network name and password information and if you change the password, the device still sees the same network name and thinks that it should use the old password.
Try changing both the name of the wireless network and the password on the Time Capsule.
Access the settings for the wireless network as follows:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the settings for both the Wireless Network Name and Password
    Write those down
Click Update to save your new settings
Then look for the name of the new wireless network and enter the new password to connect on all wireless devices

  • Is my Time Capsule Secure?

Being that Time Capsule can act as a wireless router, I'm interested in knowing more about its security or lack thereof.
Seems like most people would have a similar setup. (Cable) Modem > Time Capsule > Computer.
Being that the Time Capsule is just behind the modem, is it less secure than other drives going out FROM my computer?
Even when my computer is asleep I can hear the Time Capsule working away, sometimes late at night. I'm concerned that even though my computer is sleeping, activity and access can still be made from outside and that without my computer's firewall in the loop. I store important files on the Time Capsule, are they safe?
Does anyone know the vulnerabilities and strengths of the Time Capsule as a secure storage drive in this configuration?

    Hello all,
I spent quite a lot of time (not a geek but not inexperienced) setting my Time Capsule up as a back up drive and a store for my DVD's so I could access them from my ipad and Iphon via FileBrowser. It all works fine except.....
I fixed my friends Sony Vaio Laptop running Windows 7 (sorry about that but he hasn't seen the light yet!) and after fixing it I happened to be poking around (I was connected to my Sky Router) and clicked Network, this brought up my Time Capsule. When I see it with my Mac and FileBrowser I have to enter a username and password. Well I clicked it and I could browse through the whole of my Time Capsule, photos videos etc without entering a user name or password!! It even plays my movies!
    How can this be??
I do not have wireless enabled on the TC, as I said I had connected the Sony to my sky router not via wireless using the TC.
File sharing is enabled on my TC but "With TC Password" and as I say from my Mac I cant access it without a password so please help as as it stands anyone else can see my files?
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help
    Regards

By guest, I mean the guest access to the hard disk.. not wireless..
In your setup the TC is able to be accessed because it is bridged.. the connection to the sky router is fine as that gives an ip address that allows access to the TC.
Did you happen to load airport utility or bonjour for windows.. or was it already there?
Give us screen shot of the file sharing page in the disk utility.
With the guest access to read or read and write anybody can access the TC. Even if you have a disk password set.

  • Time capsule ethernet setup

I have a time capsule that I am trying to use as a time machine with an ethernet connection to my iMac 27 late 2012. The time machine setup doesn't seem to recognize the time capsule. What am I doing wrong?

the router mode is greyed out.
It is in bridge so that doesn't matter.
I can't turn off the wreless on my mac, as it provides access to the internet
No, if you turn off wireless then you access internet and both TC by ethernet.. there is no need for wireless.
If you want to use your old TC in complete network isolation you can do that.
You need to reset it to router mode.. and it will have no other connection than to the imac.. you are creating a secondary network.
The info is in the post here.. near the bottom with all the screen shots for the setup.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
I would load 5.6 utilty onto your computer as it does manual setup better with the old TC.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.

  • Time Capsule Wireless Setup

    Hi,
Currently my wireless router is located outside my room, i'm going to setup Apple Time Capsule in my room and I don't want to use LAN cable to connect time capsule to my network. Is it possible to use wireless?

Is it possible to use wireless?
Yes, if your "main" wireless router is also an Apple AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, or Time Capsule.
Otherwise, you will need to connect the Time Capsule to your modem/router using a wired Ethernet cable, as illustrated in the Setup Guide.

  • How to configure Time Capsule for setup of an IP camera?

First, a summary of my gear:  Internet service provider = Verizon FIOS.  FIOS uses an ActionTec Router (Model MI424WR).  The ActionTec does the routing, assignment of private IP addresses and NAT.  The ActionTec has wireless capability but I have DISABLED the wireless piece of ActionTec.  I use Time Capsule (4rth generation, 802.11n, Version 7.6) for my wireless LAN.  The Time Capsule is hardwired to the ActionTec via Ethernet.
My objective is to setup a Foscam IP camera (Model FI8918), connected wirelessly with Time Capsule, so that I can control the Foscam from both inside and outside of my wireless LAN from my iPhone running a Foscam app.  If anyone has managed to get an IP camera up and running in the scenario described above, I would appreciate any tips and info, especially when it comes to port forwarding and connection sharing.  For example, do I need to setup port forwarding on both the ActionTec and Time Capsule?  What type of connection sharing?  Right now, the Time Capsule is in bridge mode.

I have yet to setup my cameras, but I can tell you that since the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode....and that is the correct setting for it when it is connected to the Actiontec Gateway/Router.....that any port forwarding or other configuration must take place within the Actiontec router.
In Bridge Mode, the Time Capsule is acting as a simple pass through device even though it is functioning as a wireless access point.
Everything on the network gets an IP address from the Actiontec device, so that is where you will need to concentrate with the configuration of the cameras.
It's unlikely that an Actiontec expert is here on an Apple support forum, but you never know.  Might be a good idea to also post in an Actiontec support forum.

  • Time Capsule Security leak

I have been using Time Capsule in combination with Time Machine for a while now, but recently found out that the data on it, is not protected with the same security level as it is on the Mac itself.
Let me try to explain myself:
Our home config consists out of one main Imac with 4 user profiles, and two macbooks all running 10.6.5 and a time capsule at 7.4.2
Time capsule is used to backup the data ( User dataset and subsets ) of the iMac and the two macbooks.
When I access the sparsebundle of the Imac on TimeCapsule through the Finder on the Imac, one gets access to Backups.backupdb and finally can browse through the different versions of the backup. Drilling down further to the individual file is possible, however if one is logged on as user1 on the Imac he will only have access rights to the files of user1, Files of all other users are blocked with the typical 'no access' sign. This is as expected.
The problem occurs if I access the same sparsebundle of the iMac, but this time through Finder on one of the Macbooks. To our big surprise any user on the Macbook has full access to all files of all four iMac users when drilling down up to the file level. The typical 'no access' sign never appears.
Same happens when iMac is used to access a sparsebundle from one of the Macbooks, which will give full visibility to all files on the Macbook.
I can't find any configuration options to remedy this.
All suggestion are welcome as I am very uncomfortable with this situation.

Hmm... The time capsule is a generic 'disk pool' however have you tried to access the data from within a different mac's sparse bundle directly?
I would expect the unix file permissions to kick in and at least prevent you from opening those files such as documents etc.
If you want something more secure, you're going to have to go for a dedicated NAS box or look at a PC solution such as FreeNAS to share out disk to servers/users and locked down, or use OpenSolaris and use iSCSI sparse bundles, I have a friend who does this and the security is such that he has four different disks shared out via iscsi to 3 macs and a PC, which use Time machine to backup to the 'chunk' of disk shared out via open Solaris's iscsi initiator.. A more elegant solution but one which requires some technical know how. The Mac's see that disk via the iSCSI connection on his lan using iscsi mac software-
this is basically how to do it : http://www.kamiogi.net/Kamiogi/FrameDragging/Entries/2009/5/25_OpenSolaris_ZFS_iSCSI_Time_Machine_in_20_Minutes_orLess.html

  • Time Capsule Security: which one?

I seem to remember reading that there are certain problems one may encounter when using the Time Capsule's security levels, but I can't remember which security levels and what the issues were.
I know the security levels are:
    1. password on a per disk basis, or
    2. password on an account basis on Time Capsule

  • Is Time Capsule Secure?

I have a 1T Time Capsule and love it. It works just as advertised. But I have what is likely a rookie question. Since my cable modem is plugged directly into the time capsule, can others reach that drive over the internet? OS X has a firewall, I know, but it would seem to me that the time capsule is 'upstream' of my laptop; that the drive in the time capsule is on the other side of the firewall.
Please lay my mind to rest: there is some security to keep outsiders out of my backup data. Right?

    All,
I agree that "No one asked for it..." isn't a very compelling reason and that the average or even above average user isn't going know what SPI is or why they would want or need it. Someone in a NetGear forum did point out however that, unless you’re running commercial websites from your location behind this router, you probably don’t need SPI, which is used to defeat DOS attacks like PING and SYN floods.
I just purchased a NetGear WNR3500 router. It has SPI and 2 levels of NAT firewall security. The problem is that iChat won't connect with SPI enabled. So even though I have it I can't use it. It appears to be specifically an iChat issue with this router’s SPI because with SPI enabled a Windows XP PC with the AIM client connects without problem. I’m certainly not happy disabling a major component of my firewall as a workaround.
The other thing that makes me long for a Time Capsule is that I also just bought an Iomega MiniMax 500GB drive. If you're not familiar with it, it has the same design and footprint as the Mini, so a natural fit, right? The only problem is that it doesn't mount when the Mac boots. I have to power cycle the drive for it to mount. At this point, I'm considering it defective pending a resolution from Iomega.
So the question is - return both the router and the drive and get a Time Capsule? Operationally, how does everyone find the TC? Glitches, reliability, etc?

  • ISP Router/Modem   Time Capsule - Optimal Setup

I've read many different threads on this issue but none have really address my question fully, so posting this in the hopes of getting some feedback.
I currently have an ISP that supplies a DSL Modem/Router that serves a dual purpose, provide me with internet and TV service.  In Canada it's called Bell Fibe TV.  Currently, I have the ISP Modem Wifi OFF, wired it to my Time Capsule and use it to provide Wifi throughout the house.
My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.  Time Capsule and Router are both located in the basement.  I have my house hard wired with ethernet to the basement with 3 main outlets, one in the basement for my iMac computer/office, one on the main floor, and one on the top floor.
I have two 3 Apple TV's, one in the basement, one on the main floor and one on the top floor.  I use a 5-port ethernet switch on the main floor as I have a variety of different devices there ie: Apple TV, TV Receiver Box, Sonos Player etc.  I also have an Airport Express that is wirelessly extending my Wifi.
What is the optimal setup in this situation?  I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged).  Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule? Does it matter? In recent weeks, I've noticed some odd issues where my Apple TV will lose its network settings and not find the network.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
Looking for any suggestions/help on this.
    Thanks

My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.
If the Time Capsule is configured correctly, it makes no difference whether devices connect to the Time Capsule or the ISP modem/router, since both the modem/router and Time Capsule are on the same network.
I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged)
That is the correct setting for your situation.
Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule?
    See answer above.
The best practice, wiring wise, would be to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the modem/router to an Ethernet switch. Then connect the Time Capsule and all other Ethernet connections to the switch.
Performance will not be any better this way, but the network layout and troubleshooting are easier in this type of setup. If you do not want to add a switch, then connect to the most convenient port on either the modem/router or Time Capsule.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
That is correct. The Guest Network feature will only work correctly if the Time Capsule is the main router for a network....not a bridge to the network.

  • Time Capsule Wireless Setup Problems

I just got my Time Capsule in the mail after moving (I had it and was using it in my previous home) and was trying to set it up again. The current internet that I already have in my new home was a modem and wireless router all in one. What I am trying to do now is set up my Time Capsule to just connect to my current wireless network (note I don't want it as an extension or to create a new wireless network) and make it so I can have it in another part of the house without any wires being connected so I can just use it as a wireless backup.
Now if that is not possible and I have to create it as an extension, could I do this without having to do it through an ethernet cable?
    Thanks

Yes, this is possible. You will want to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the existing wireless network created by the combination modem/wireless router as a wireless client.
o Perform a "hard" reset on the TC.
To set up the Time Capsule (TC) as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the TC's LAN ports, and then, try these settings:
    o Launch the AirPort Utility.
    o Select the TC.
o If not already connected to the TC's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
    o Wireless Security: None
OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
o Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: 40-bit WEP|128-bit WEP | WPA Personal | WPA Enterprise>
o Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
o Click Update to write the new settings to the TC.

  • External Hard Drives and Time Capsule Backup Setup Opinions

    Bottom line up front:
If you had two 1.5 Terrabyte Western Digital MyBook drives and an AirPort 1.5 TB Time Capsule, and you wanted duplicate backups of time machine (automated) as well as additional storage space for Movies and Photo's...
How would you use these three devices to accomplish this?
Also, these two drives are eSata, FireWire (400?) and USB 2.0 cabable.
Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for your replies!
    Commentary below:
After having lost 14,000 pictures from a Terrabyte drive from iOmega crashing, it's time to get serious about my data backup.
I currently have the 1.5 TerraByte Time Capsule on my network humming along nicely. (or so it appears)
I'm nearing the usable space of my iMac's hard drive.
Also, I'd like to have an 'additional' backup of my Time Machine. Is this possible? i.e. two backups at two different times on two different disks?
What would this group recommend as a way to set them up?
i.e. formating? Journaling? No Journaling? Partitions for the iMovie and iPhoto libraries?

    hwilke01 wrote:
Hi there- thanks for taking the time to read an respond. I have 320 Gigs of data on my iMac hard drive that I want to backup.
then you have plenty of space to do backups and then some. back up via TM to the Time capsule. make a separate clone backup to one of the externals. you can partition it if you like. don't back up just imovie and iphoto to that drive. back up everything. this way you'll have double backups of everything. i suggest you use superduper or CCCloner for the secondary backups. that will give you a bootable clone as your second backup. make sure that the external drive is formatted properly. the partition scheme should be GUID and the format mac os extended journaled. to format a drive you open disk utility. select the whole external drive (model, not name) and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1 (or whatever), click on options and set the partition scheme to GUID. set the format to mac os extended journaled (that's the default) and click "apply".
I'd also like to have a separate partioned backup of my iPhoto and iMovie databases. Is there a preferred way of doing this?
    Thanks again

  • Okay just got a 2TB Time Capsule and setup on my new 15" MacBook Pro and on work iMac. Can't connect remotely off network.

Both computers which I have connected to my work internet show Time Capsule under SHARED but when I click on it, it hangs on Connecting and then says Connection Failed after a few minutes.  Clicking Connect As just restarts the process of Connecting... but with an error saying "There was a problem connecting to the server "Justin's Time Capsule". "The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP adress, check your network connection, and then try again"....  Any help would be great, I've browsed a bunch of the the threads and can't figure it out!
    Thanks in advance!

Reboot the TC.. this is common problem on Lion networking.
You may need to reboot the whole network.. don't know what your work network is so that might not be possible.. but a full reboot of the modem router TC and then clients in that order generally works..
    See C17
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
The issue is very similar .. that is TM error but the problem is really the same.
