Time Capsule Set Up Problem

Hello,
I am trying to set up my new time capsule. I have an existing wireless network with an existing (linksys) router that I would like to use. When I open AirPort Utility it says "AirPort Utility found an AirPort Express with 802.11". But for example at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1178 the example seem to show that it should say it found a Time Capsule? Did the wrong thing end up in my box?
I set it up like the instructions said to connect to my wireless but when I open time machine and click select back up disk the time capsule is not there... (nothing is there!).

Unfortunately I can't offer any help.....I am having the same issues.
I am relatively new to Mac as well (1.5 years) but I just bought a TC and I get through the setup steps (name, join existing network etc.) and it goes to "waiting for device to restart"....then I get the "unable to find wireless device".
You are not alone....hopefully someone can help us both?

  • Please help - Time Capsule Set up problems

I bought a Time Capsule almost a year ago at the same time as my iMac, but have only tried to set it up in the last 3 weeks (so its the 6"x6"x1" version).  I followed the set up instructions numerous times but kept getting an error message in Airport Utility. I rebooted my broadband and tried the factory reset of the TC.
Eventually I contacted Apple and after repeating everything whilst they were on the phone, they made an appointment for me at the Genius Bar to have the TC checked over. The Apple rep was able to access the TC using the internal Apple network and a normal port but had the same problem I did using the WAN connection so deemed the item faulty and replaced it.
My new TC is exactly the same and this time Apple advised me to ask my BB provider if there were any firmware updates required or reasons why I would be having problems. They also checked that I had the latest iMac software and Airport Utility. BT (my BB provider) went through a series of tests and concluded that my BT Home Hub 3 was faulty and have replaced it.
So now I have a new Home Hub 3 and another new TC and I've still got the same problem. I only want to use the TC for backing up my iMac with Time Machine but Id like to do it wirelessely. Can someone please tell me what I should do next as I can't believe its still down to faulty products.

I have just been watching Internet traffic on my McAfee security software on my BB and it shows that my router and TC both have a green light for access through the firewall, until Airport Utility gets to the point in its routine where it shows 'joining to the TC' and then my router loses access to the Internet and gets a red light as connection lost. Is that normal, and/or does it help diagnose what the problem might be?

  • Time Capsule set-up problems

I've connected the Time Capsule with the Ethernet to both my iMac and Macbook and managed to get the initial backups of both made, however I am having problems connecting to the Time Capsule to the Airport network.
We have an Airport Extreme connected to our cable modem. This is setup as a WDS main, with an Airport Express setup as a Remote. Passwords are set as WEP 128 bit so that I can connect my Nintendo DS to the network.
On every setting so far, apart from "Extend a network" the Time Capsule picks up an IP address of 169.* rather than getting the 10.0.1.* address.
    Any suggestions?

    jbullis,
    Welcome to the Apple discussion!
    Try the following:
*_Time Capsule Has Disappeared from Airport Utility / Amber Light_*
    *Restart Your ISPs Modem*
If you are using the Time Capsule as your only router then power down your ISPs modem and then your Time Capsule. Next turn your modem back on first. Let it initialize and acquire an IP address (about 30-60 seconds) and then turn your Time Capsule back on. Sometimes when you add devises, the modem will not forward the IP address assigned by your ISP until it has been restarted.
    Next,
    *Cycle Airport Preferences*
    Open Network Preferences.
Click “Turn Airport Off”, wait 10 seconds.
Now click “Turn Airport On”. Close Prefs.
Does it now show up in Airport Utilities?.
If not go to the “File” menu and select “Rescan”.
    Does it appears now?.
If not, unplug the TC, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
Does the TC show up now in Airport Utility?
Let us know if this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Time capsule setting up problem after factory reset

What's the next step after factory reset to set up my time capsule again???
i did factory reset for 4-5 times and i cant use my time capsule to create a network, join an existing network or anything else.
i also tried normal reset but still nothing can be done.
There is always a message at the end " an unexpected error occured. Try again"

Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet..
Make sure the computer has no other network running and nothing else is plugged into the TC.. just TC Lan port to the computer ethernet.
Now press reset and open airport utility.
Generally you will have no issue once it is isolated. Do the setup and then you can disconnect and put it back in the network.
If it doesn't work, is the LED on the TC flashing amber or what??
Is the ethernet port connectivity LED on?

  • Time Capsule Set up Problems Continue

I set up my time capsule, but it did not work the first time. I then ran the AirPort Utility with the Manual Setup, and then selected the Disks icon and erased contents of my Time Capsule and then started over. I also wired my computer directly to the Time Capsule via an ethernet cable for your first backup. I still have not been able to backup my iMac-G5 files and am now getting the following message:
"Time Machine Error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory."
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks!

    Is the internet working?
Can you mount the TC from Finder?

  • Time capsule set up and bootcamp

    Dear All,
I am having problem with my time capsule setting up. I have followed all the instructions, and have hopefully installed it correctly. The green light is on. Last thing to do is to turn it "on" by slidding the bar to on. Unfortunately, at this point, I get the message: You haven’t selected a location for Time Machine backups., a list of possible locations appears and the only option available for back up is Bootcamp, which obviously is not the right location, in particular as bootcamp apparently would need to be formatted....
Why is the time capsule not available. Could bootcamp be in conflict with time capsule? How can I add the time capsule to this list of available places?
Any help would be very welcomed.
My Apple shop already changed my time capsule for a second one, and with this second time capsule I am having the same problem. Nobody in Apple shop can help.... To be honest, it used to work until Apple "expert" installed bootcamp and installed window on the mac. Is it possible that when installing bootcamp, something changed for the worth?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Yannick

Please try to distinguish between Time Capsule, an Apple Wi-Fi base station with an integrated disk, and Time Machine, backup software that's been included with OS X since version 10.5. You seem to be muddling them together.

Boot Camp has nothing to do with the problem. I'm not sure this is necessary or useful, but I'd try using AirPort Utility (manual setup, Disks panel, File Sharing tab) to "Enable file sharing", then select a security method and update the Time Capsule. Then mount the Time Capsule disk (look for your Time Capsule in a Finder sidebar or use the Finder menu option Go -> Network) and see if you can now select that disk in the Time Machine setup panel.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

AirPort Utility should be here:  Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
If it is not there, you can download it from here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#airport
Temporarily, connect an Etherent cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the back of the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and a window will open to explain why the Time Capsule is complaining along with suggested actions to remedy the issue

  • Can't find European land in Time Capsule setting

I have purchased TM from USA and can't find European land in Time Capsule setting.

Apple sells products that have been "regionalized" for different parts of the world.  North America, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, etc, for example.
It is not possible to change a Time Capsule from one region to another. The reason for this is that different regions have different wireless standards and regulations. See this link for all the details:
List of WLAN channels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Time Capsule purchased in the USA will operate from 100-240 Volts and 50/60 Hz automatically, so power wise, it will work just about anywhere in the world if you have the right kind of AC wall socket adapter. (A power transformer or converter is not needed).
But, you will have to be careful about using higher 5 GHz wireless channels on the USA Time Capsule while in Europe, since the use of higher 5 GHz channels is not legal in most European countries at this time.  In other words, keep the 5 GHz channel on the USA Time Capsule at Channel 36, 40, 44 or 48.

  • Time Capsule not connecting to WEP printer.  Time Capsule set up for WPA2.  Can I use both standards with one Time Capsule?

How do I get a WEP printer to connect wirlessly to the new Time Capsule set for WPA2?  High security is needed do to large Apt Complex.

Actually, you can but it would require that you reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) for "WEP (Transitional Security Network)." This Wireless Security option allows for both WEP and WPA clients to connect ... BUT does NOT support the AES/CCMP encryption protocol introduced by WPA2. Note: The WPA2 standard supports both the TKIP (used in WPA & WEP) and AES/CCMP (used only in WPA2) encryption protocols.
If you require the stronger AES protocol, WEP clients or WPA clients that only support TKIP will not be able to connect.

  • Time Capsule setting up and not showing up on utility

    Hi,
I'm just trying to set up a time capsule with two laptops. I've already got a wireless network and so wanted to add it on as a backup. The first time I plugged it in, my laptop (macbook pro) found it immediately on opening Airport utility and I went through the setup process. Then it said that it was having problems connecting to the network and to start again? So I went back, and it's not finding it, asking to rescan constantly. I've tried installing the software on another laptop (macbook) and it's doing the same, not showing up. I've tried restarting the computer, the time capsule, the router, tried doing the re-start to factory settings thing with the bit on the back... and it still won't show up. The capsule is connected by ethernet cable to the router. I'm still getting wireless from the router.
    Thanks, J

What has happened likely is that I think the default configuration of the TC is to set itself up as a router. So it's done that and it's now running its own wireless network that is different from the one you normally use. If you look, you'll probably see both of them. In order to modify the TC settings you need to be on the same LAN subnet. What I would do is hook up the TC and a laptop just by themselves. Connect in to it that way. Configure it to put it in "Bridge Mode." Turn off the wireless unless you want to use it as another access point. Then give it an IP address that is an unused address on your local subnet (ie: 192.168.1.x or similar). You can find what your local subnet is by looking at your current wireless router and seeing what LAN address subnet it uses. Then once the TC is connected, hook it back up to your network and you should be good to go.

  • Windows 7 and time capsule set-up

I have read multiple issues about Time Capsule and windows 7 connectively problems.
I also am having some difficulty setting up the time capsule from a windows 7 machine. Is it true you need to change your IP of the windows machine to 10.0.1.10 address to communicate with the time capsule during set-up?
Any windows only instructions for set-up?

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

  • Time Capsule set up OK but will not print.

Time capsule originally set up with print cable to iMac. Now, I've moved print cable to Time Capsule, but cannot find way to get it to print. What is required to get Time Capsule to print with the print cable hooked up to the Time Capsule USB port?

I had this problem with my Time Machine drive very recently. I wasn't using a Time Capsule but it sounds exactly like my problem.
Time Machine would backup to my external drive with no problems but every time I wanted to go into the program, it would freeze. It would be fine in the current time, (when you first enter Time Machine) but if I tried to go back in time, the animation would happen, but I wouldn't be able to click on anything in the finder Window. The only way to get out of it was, as you said, to press Apple, Option and Escape.
The way I solved this was to use Disk Utility on my external drive. I had tried before but when I clicked on verify or repair disk it just sat there for ages doing nothing. What you need to do is select the Time Capsule drive in Disk Utility and then do a repair on it.
Warning though, it will take about an hour to complete. It took probably about 20 minutes for mine to even start repairing. But it does work, I did it on mine and now Time Machine is fully working again.
    Hope this helps

  • Time capsule set up fine but time machine hangs up when accessed

    hi,
i just bought my mac book pro this year. then, purchased 1TB Time capsule. i had set up the time cap after 2 days with the time machine. it worked well but i cannot print when the printer cable is attached to the time cap. then, i missed several scheduled back ups due to electricity interruptions and even resorted to deleting the sparsebundle to start anew. when i enter time machine, i can see the outerspace background but the finder window and everything else could not be accessed. it just freezes. i brought my time cap to istore (reseller store here in the phil) and fortunately, they facilitated to replace my time cap with a new one.
with the new time cap, i rushed to set it up. initial back up has been done. my problems are:
    1. i can enter time machine, but i could not access anything. the time line freezes and so with the finder window. i even resorted to ctrl option esc to get out of time machine; and
    2. i still could not print via time capsule.
please help me. the discussion portion of apple website is the only direct line of help available as i am located far from the apple reseller. i don't have the landline telephone so i could not directly call apple support.
    help me please....

  • I can not connect my phone to time capsule..whats problem ?

my phone is connected to time capsule but no data is transfer,,,whast problem
time capsule is connect to my mac .and i can use internet ,but i cannot use for my phone...how can i solve it ?

Phones are more sensitive to wireless setup than the computer.. also the computer can use 5ghz.. only the latest iphones have 5ghz. I presume by phone you do mean iphone. Andoid phones actually have some wireless bugs..
Anyhow.. redo the setup of the TC.
Use all SMB names.. for everything (SMB just means windows networking.. it is the lowest common denominator.. everything works with SMB).
So names that are short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
    eg. Time Capsule name. TC
    Wireless name for 2.4ghz TC24ghz
Wireless name for 5ghz TC5ghz (yes, use a different name for 5ghz).
Hard disk share name.. Data (that is now default but occasionally different).
On v5 utility which you can still load into lion and works much better than later v6 utility.
Also set to fixed radio channels.. try in order, 11, 6, 1.
Tell us if you still have issues.
Did this just happen with the new firmware update to the TC?
What model TC.. A1xxx from the rubber base mat??
What OS is the computer running and what Airport Utility?
