Time Capsule Set Up With Neighbor's WiFi

I use my neighbor's WiFi (with permission and password). I can't get the set up for my time machine to work. I keep hitting this wall where it no longer can find my wireless device (the time capsule) after I "connect" the airport utility to the existing network upstairs. What am doing wrong?

Does the neighbor's computer(s) connect to the time capsule successfully? That might be a clue...?

  • HT1178 time capsule set up with static ip

Is set up of a time capsule the same with a static IP address as with a dynamic address?
Is it still just plug it in and use airport utility to set up.
We install a video survillance system to moniter an ill family member and the system installer says we need a static IP address.
    Thanks for you help

That means static IP on the LAN side.. that is set via the airport utility and is simple to do.. just go to the Network tab in the airport utility and use the dhcp reservation.
I am not sure what version utility you are using but it looks like this in v5.
    And like this in v6.
    Click the + for reservations..
This is so the port forwarding goes to the same device.
See Tesserax doco on port forwarding here.

  • Time Capsule set up with secure business laptop

I just purchased a Time Capsule and am seeking suggestions on how to set it up based on the following circumstances:
In addition to multiple personal laptops/computers, I work from home and have a business laptop that is highly secure and do not have the ability to download AirPort (as suggested within the set up manual).  In addition, I am certain there will be issues with the internal Time Capsule hard drive (since my business computer has the ability to detect and shut down all unauthorized external components as a violation of information - Flash drive, memory stick, etc. I can't even use the laptop to charge a cell phone!).  Is it possible to use the Time Machine as my wireless router without downloading AirPort?  And is possible to set up so that this business computer does not read or have access to the hard drive?  Note:  My business laptop is also connected to a highly encrypted VPN/LAN router (which is than connected into my existing wireless router).
I see that it is possible to connect the Time Capsule into an existing network.  Is this done by just connecting a ethernet cable between the Time Capsule and current Router.  Any other special set up info needed?  Does this just turn the Time Capsule into a hard drive and disable the wireless router fuctionality?  By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
Any computer guru suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, don't confuse "Time Capsule", an Apple Wi-Fi base station, with "Time Machine", backup software included with OS X since version 10.5.  Airport Utility is only needed to configure a Time Capsule.  You'd only need it on one of your computers.

    That's one way.

Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you might want to use AirPort Utility to turn off wireless operation and put it into "bridge mode".  You could also configure a "roaming network".
By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
    Between what and what?

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • Just moved and have new internet WiFi provider and can't get my time capsule set up.

Just moved and have new wifi provider and can't get my time capsule to work with it.

The TC is designed for ethernet WAN connection .. it will not work with wifi provider.

  • How I can set up the DynDns inside the Time capsule, or only with the Time capsule I have external access from a PC for ex.?

How I can set up the DynDns inside the Time capsule, or only with the Time capsule I have external access from a PC for ex.?

MobileMe service is finished.. to get remote access to the Mac or TC you use iCloud account.. but that is for files.. not to access web cams.
Without dyndns client in the TC, you can perhaps run dyndns on the computer or video recorder..many of these will have clients built into them.
Even better get a static Public IP from your ISP.. that is the correct professional way to do it.
Or you can use whatever broadband modem you have and remove the TC as the main router.. simply bridge it. Use your adsl router for connection. Almost all adsl have built in dyndns.
Sorry your language is very hard to follow.. and I am sure you are finding my answers similarly difficult.
Basically the TC is about the hardest device to setup because it is lacking important networking functions.
Get a vpn router and use vpn connection is far superior to any other method. But you cannot do it with TC.

  • Can i set up my Time Capsule 1st generation with airport 5.5.3?

can i set up my Time Capsule 1st generation with airport 5.5.3?

Yes, if you are asking about AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows.....and you are running XP SP3 on your PC.
    AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows
If you are running XP SP2 on the PC, then you will need to use AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Windows
    AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Windows

  • Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi

Time capsule doesnt work with telia bredband no wifi.  Time capsule and its wifi worked in the beginning, but now it doesnt. I have tried everything without success.

There is no question.. so if it is a statement of resignation.. then if under warranty and faulty Apple will fix it/replace it.. if not dead you will be given it back.
Are you using Lion? If so did you download 5.6 airport utility?
Plug the TC into a computer by ethernet.. hold in reset for 10sec.. and then redo the setup.
Give TC and wireless short names and no spaces and no special characters.. lock the wireless to manual a/n-b/g and fix the channels.
Then if it doesn't work most likely faulty. Otherwise it is just setup is wrong.

  • Time Capsule not connecting to WEP printer.  Time Capsule set up for WPA2.  Can I use both standards with one Time Capsule?

How do I get a WEP printer to connect wirlessly to the new Time Capsule set for WPA2?  High security is needed do to large Apt Complex.

Actually, you can but it would require that you reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) for "WEP (Transitional Security Network)." This Wireless Security option allows for both WEP and WPA clients to connect ... BUT does NOT support the AES/CCMP encryption protocol introduced by WPA2. Note: The WPA2 standard supports both the TKIP (used in WPA & WEP) and AES/CCMP (used only in WPA2) encryption protocols.
If you require the stronger AES protocol, WEP clients or WPA clients that only support TKIP will not be able to connect.

  • Time Capsule set up OK but will not print.

Time capsule originally set up with print cable to iMac. Now, I've moved print cable to Time Capsule, but cannot find way to get it to print. What is required to get Time Capsule to print with the print cable hooked up to the Time Capsule USB port?

I had this problem with my Time Machine drive very recently. I wasn't using a Time Capsule but it sounds exactly like my problem.
Time Machine would backup to my external drive with no problems but every time I wanted to go into the program, it would freeze. It would be fine in the current time, (when you first enter Time Machine) but if I tried to go back in time, the animation would happen, but I wouldn't be able to click on anything in the finder Window. The only way to get out of it was, as you said, to press Apple, Option and Escape.
The way I solved this was to use Disk Utility on my external drive. I had tried before but when I clicked on verify or repair disk it just sat there for ages doing nothing. What you need to do is select the Time Capsule drive in Disk Utility and then do a repair on it.
Warning though, it will take about an hour to complete. It took probably about 20 minutes for mine to even start repairing. But it does work, I did it on mine and now Time Machine is fully working again.
    Hope this helps
    Chris

  • Time capsule set up and bootcamp

    Dear All,
I am having problem with my time capsule setting up. I have followed all the instructions, and have hopefully installed it correctly. The green light is on. Last thing to do is to turn it "on" by slidding the bar to on. Unfortunately, at this point, I get the message: You haven’t selected a location for Time Machine backups., a list of possible locations appears and the only option available for back up is Bootcamp, which obviously is not the right location, in particular as bootcamp apparently would need to be formatted....
Why is the time capsule not available. Could bootcamp be in conflict with time capsule? How can I add the time capsule to this list of available places?
Any help would be very welcomed.
My Apple shop already changed my time capsule for a second one, and with this second time capsule I am having the same problem. Nobody in Apple shop can help.... To be honest, it used to work until Apple "expert" installed bootcamp and installed window on the mac. Is it possible that when installing bootcamp, something changed for the worth?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Yannick

Please try to distinguish between Time Capsule, an Apple Wi-Fi base station with an integrated disk, and Time Machine, backup software that's been included with OS X since version 10.5. You seem to be muddling them together.

Boot Camp has nothing to do with the problem. I'm not sure this is necessary or useful, but I'd try using AirPort Utility (manual setup, Disks panel, File Sharing tab) to "Enable file sharing", then select a security method and update the Time Capsule. Then mount the Time Capsule disk (look for your Time Capsule in a Finder sidebar or use the Finder menu option Go -> Network) and see if you can now select that disk in the Time Machine setup panel.

  • Time Capsule better than Airport Extreme in wifi capabilities??

    Hello people,
I recently talked to a friend of mine (Mac user) who told me that Time Capsule has in fact a better WiFi capability than Airport Extreme since it has to cope with all the traffic for Time Machine. I dunno if this rumor is right but if it is i'd like to know more since i'm looking for a WiFi router and if Time Capsule gives better signal strength and thus larger or better bandwidth than i might just go with it.
So what do you people think?
    Thanks
    Andrei D.

So you are sure then that there are no hidden functions or hardware capabilities that would allow Time Capsule to have better wireless capabilities?
    Yes.

  • Can time capsule be used with windows programs

can time capsule be used with windows as a wi fi router? or dose the disk that came with the time capsule work with windows program?

The wifi router side will work fine.
The disk that came with the TC should have windows version of airport utility but you can download it.. that is important if you want to setup the TC or use the shared disk.

  • How to use Time Capsule via INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB Cloud

how to use Time Capsule via INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB Cloud

Get a vpn router.. I have no idea where you are in the world but you can find reasonable stuff for not too much money or even a general router that takes third party firmware like dd-wrt can run openvpn.
Set up the vpn router in place of the TC, as the main router in the network. Simply bridge the TC and place it behind the router. It will be accessible as part of the network via the vpn.
This is the only safe way to do it via windows.
    http://www.dyncommunity.com/questions/18132/accessing-time-capsule-from-windows- 7-over-the-int.html
If you google around I have seen posts about how to access TC by port forwarding SMB on the TC.. using a different port.. To me this is going to slow down the hackers by a day or two.. then they will discover the open port and access your network.. not just the TC.. they now have SMB access to everything. Don't do it. There is very little security on SMB.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.
