Time Capsule set-up

Hi, I tried the following steps
1. Plugged in TC (no other connections, Ethernet, etc, only mains connection
2. My IMac finds TC thru Airport, I click it and go through the TC set-up screens, passwords, join my existing network etc
3. Then it says my wireless network is to be temp. unavailable while the TC restarts, fine
4. It never restarts. It starts to flash amber and after a while I get an error saying it didn't work.
I have tried a factory reset on the TC three times and each time it is the same thing.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi, ok, well I tried setting up with an Ethernet cable running from the back of my router to the Internet WAN port at the back of the TC. For good measure I tried another factory reset before starting. So here is what happened
1. I go thru the set-up screens, say I want to join my network, set password, etc
2. I then get a message saying fine, your network will be temporaily unavailable, I say fine
3. Then I wait and wait and wait while looking at a message saying the TC is restarting and I can close the window if I want. I leave it open.
4. Then I get an error message
what's the error message ?
This is pretty frustrating now. It must be a problem with the TC that whenever I restart it, my airport cannot find it, and I need to do a factory reset, right?
it could be a problem with the TC but i'm not yet convinced
okay, so you have an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports of the router to the WAN port of the TC. leave that cable. now run another ethernet from one of the LAN ports of the TC to you machine (temporarily, for setting it up)
when the TC shows up in AU, instead of clicking continue, click +manual setup+. you will need to make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing on the TC is set to *off (bridge mode)*. in this constellation, the TC would provide a second wireless network and you should also be able to use the backup feature. a drawback to this would be that you will not be able to use the +guest network+ feature.
my preference would be to do away with your other router and make the TC your main router. you'd get all the benefits of the TC plus there will be less chance of your other Apple devices being incompatible
...sorry, one more question. This is my second TC. My first one conked out after 18 months, and it was not connected to my router by cable. It used to just back up wirelessly from my mac to the TC, I thought. Maybe I am mistaken but I am pretty sure it was just the TC, plugged into the wall, and backing up my Mac which was using the router for internet access. Is that not right?
yes, you can do that. but you had to switch networks all the time, correct ? you needed to join the other router's network to get online, then switch to the TC's network for backing up, right ?
again, if you would make the TC your main router, you would have all this combine in one device

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Time capsule set up and bootcamp

    Dear All,
I am having problem with my time capsule setting up. I have followed all the instructions, and have hopefully installed it correctly. The green light is on. Last thing to do is to turn it "on" by slidding the bar to on. Unfortunately, at this point, I get the message: You haven’t selected a location for Time Machine backups., a list of possible locations appears and the only option available for back up is Bootcamp, which obviously is not the right location, in particular as bootcamp apparently would need to be formatted....
Why is the time capsule not available. Could bootcamp be in conflict with time capsule? How can I add the time capsule to this list of available places?
Any help would be very welcomed.
My Apple shop already changed my time capsule for a second one, and with this second time capsule I am having the same problem. Nobody in Apple shop can help.... To be honest, it used to work until Apple "expert" installed bootcamp and installed window on the mac. Is it possible that when installing bootcamp, something changed for the worth?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Yannick

Please try to distinguish between Time Capsule, an Apple Wi-Fi base station with an integrated disk, and Time Machine, backup software that's been included with OS X since version 10.5. You seem to be muddling them together.
Why is the time capsule not available. Could bootcamp be in conflict with time capsule? How can I add the time capsule to this list of available places?
Boot Camp has nothing to do with the problem. I'm not sure this is necessary or useful, but I'd try using AirPort Utility (manual setup, Disks panel, File Sharing tab) to "Enable file sharing", then select a security method and update the Time Capsule. Then mount the Time Capsule disk (look for your Time Capsule in a Finder sidebar or use the Finder menu option Go -> Network) and see if you can now select that disk in the Time Machine setup panel.

  • Can't find European land in Time Capsule setting

I have purchased TM from USA and can't find European land in Time Capsule setting.

Apple sells products that have been "regionalized" for different parts of the world.  North America, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, etc, for example.
It is not possible to change a Time Capsule from one region to another. The reason for this is that different regions have different wireless standards and regulations. See this link for all the details:
List of WLAN channels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Time Capsule purchased in the USA will operate from 100-240 Volts and 50/60 Hz automatically, so power wise, it will work just about anywhere in the world if you have the right kind of AC wall socket adapter. (A power transformer or converter is not needed).
But, you will have to be careful about using higher 5 GHz wireless channels on the USA Time Capsule while in Europe, since the use of higher 5 GHz channels is not legal in most European countries at this time.  In other words, keep the 5 GHz channel on the USA Time Capsule at Channel 36, 40, 44 or 48.

  • Time Capsule not connecting to WEP printer.  Time Capsule set up for WPA2.  Can I use both standards with one Time Capsule?

How do I get a WEP printer to connect wirlessly to the new Time Capsule set for WPA2?  High security is needed do to large Apt Complex.

Actually, you can but it would require that you reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) for "WEP (Transitional Security Network)." This Wireless Security option allows for both WEP and WPA clients to connect ... BUT does NOT support the AES/CCMP encryption protocol introduced by WPA2. Note: The WPA2 standard supports both the TKIP (used in WPA & WEP) and AES/CCMP (used only in WPA2) encryption protocols.
If you require the stronger AES protocol, WEP clients or WPA clients that only support TKIP will not be able to connect.

  • Time Capsule set up and wifi network OK but MacBook doesn't see capsule as airport device.  Do I need to do a hard reset and start again?

I recently bought a Time Capsule and sucessfully set it up in accordance with the instruction book.  The home network and guest network seem to work fine but my MacBook cannot find the Time Capsule wirelessley.
Initially I set up the time capsule connected to the MacBook with an ethernet cable.  The Time Machine got 30GB way through a 60GB initial back up and then stopped for no obvious reason.  Since then the capsule has not been visible to the MacBook.  I have tried to reconfigure through Airport Utility but even after reperated rescans the capsule remains invisible.
Any help would be extremely welcome.

    1. i would restore the express to factory defaut by holding the reset button on the unit with a paperclip while you are powering it on
    2. if it restored, you should be able to see it in your wifi icon at top of screen as "airport express"
or you can see it in airport utility
    3. then if you want to connect it wirelessly to your time capsule, you would choose "extend network" and put in relevant security and password....this would make the express a wireless access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)
if you chose to do it wired which is a better way if you have access to ethernet port at wall, you would choose "create a wireless network" and then under the "network" tab you would choose "Bridge Mode".....this would make the express a wired access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)

  • Please help - Time Capsule Set up problems

I bought a Time Capsule almost a year ago at the same time as my iMac, but have only tried to set it up in the last 3 weeks (so its the 6"x6"x1" version).  I followed the set up instructions numerous times but kept getting an error message in Airport Utility. I rebooted my broadband and tried the factory reset of the TC.
Eventually I contacted Apple and after repeating everything whilst they were on the phone, they made an appointment for me at the Genius Bar to have the TC checked over. The Apple rep was able to access the TC using the internal Apple network and a normal port but had the same problem I did using the WAN connection so deemed the item faulty and replaced it.
My new TC is exactly the same and this time Apple advised me to ask my BB provider if there were any firmware updates required or reasons why I would be having problems. They also checked that I had the latest iMac software and Airport Utility. BT (my BB provider) went through a series of tests and concluded that my BT Home Hub 3 was faulty and have replaced it.
So now I have a new Home Hub 3 and another new TC and I've still got the same problem. I only want to use the TC for backing up my iMac with Time Machine but Id like to do it wirelessely. Can someone please tell me what I should do next as I can't believe its still down to faulty products.

I have just been watching Internet traffic on my McAfee security software on my BB and it shows that my router and TC both have a green light for access through the firewall, until Airport Utility gets to the point in its routine where it shows 'joining to the TC' and then my router loses access to the Internet and gets a red light as connection lost. Is that normal, and/or does it help diagnose what the problem might be?

  • Time Capsule setting up and not showing up on utility

    Hi,
I'm just trying to set up a time capsule with two laptops. I've already got a wireless network and so wanted to add it on as a backup. The first time I plugged it in, my laptop (macbook pro) found it immediately on opening Airport utility and I went through the setup process. Then it said that it was having problems connecting to the network and to start again? So I went back, and it's not finding it, asking to rescan constantly. I've tried installing the software on another laptop (macbook) and it's doing the same, not showing up. I've tried restarting the computer, the time capsule, the router, tried doing the re-start to factory settings thing with the bit on the back... and it still won't show up. The capsule is connected by ethernet cable to the router. I'm still getting wireless from the router.
    Thanks, J

What has happened likely is that I think the default configuration of the TC is to set itself up as a router. So it's done that and it's now running its own wireless network that is different from the one you normally use. If you look, you'll probably see both of them. In order to modify the TC settings you need to be on the same LAN subnet. What I would do is hook up the TC and a laptop just by themselves. Connect in to it that way. Configure it to put it in "Bridge Mode." Turn off the wireless unless you want to use it as another access point. Then give it an IP address that is an unused address on your local subnet (ie: 192.168.1.x or similar). You can find what your local subnet is by looking at your current wireless router and seeing what LAN address subnet it uses. Then once the TC is connected, hook it back up to your network and you should be good to go.

  • Time Capsule set up Question(s)

I am finally setting up my time capsule and I want to run a back up off of my Mac Book Pro.
I have a wireless network already set thru the airport express.
My time capsule is 802.aan Wi Fi Hard drive, the flat hard drive model (not the latest currently in the stores that stands up).
My MacBook Pro runs on OSX version 10.9
I have the TC connected to my internet router via ethernet and I have an ethernet cable connecting my TC to my Mac Book Pro
The status lights for the ethernet cables are green.
However, the TC status light blinks amber.
When I open the Airport Utility it shows the internet (green) and recognizes my Express (not lit), but it does not show the TC.
When I "click" on the Express icon, a message states theis version of AP Utility doesn't support this station.
Do I have the set up correct?  Do I want my Airport Express lit green?  And why does it not recognize my TC
    Please advise .

You must setup the TC again.. factory reset and then connect to the wireless which is shown under wifi as
Apple Network a1234d The last number being different for all routers based on the MAC address.. only via wireless can the new utility work.. but once setup then you can use ethernet.
Mavericks airport utility seems to be even worse than previous ones.

  • Time Capsule set up with secure business laptop

I just purchased a Time Capsule and am seeking suggestions on how to set it up based on the following circumstances:
In addition to multiple personal laptops/computers, I work from home and have a business laptop that is highly secure and do not have the ability to download AirPort (as suggested within the set up manual).  In addition, I am certain there will be issues with the internal Time Capsule hard drive (since my business computer has the ability to detect and shut down all unauthorized external components as a violation of information - Flash drive, memory stick, etc. I can't even use the laptop to charge a cell phone!).  Is it possible to use the Time Machine as my wireless router without downloading AirPort?  And is possible to set up so that this business computer does not read or have access to the hard drive?  Note:  My business laptop is also connected to a highly encrypted VPN/LAN router (which is than connected into my existing wireless router).
I see that it is possible to connect the Time Capsule into an existing network.  Is this done by just connecting a ethernet cable between the Time Capsule and current Router.  Any other special set up info needed?  Does this just turn the Time Capsule into a hard drive and disable the wireless router fuctionality?  By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
Any computer guru suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, don't confuse "Time Capsule", an Apple Wi-Fi base station, with "Time Machine", backup software included with OS X since version 10.5.  Airport Utility is only needed to configure a Time Capsule.  You'd only need it on one of your computers.
I see that it is possible to connect the Time Capsule into an existing network.  Is this done by just connecting a ethernet cable between the Time Capsule and current Router.
    That's one way.
Any other special set up info needed?  Does this just turn the Time Capsule into a hard drive and disable the wireless router fuctionality?
Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you might want to use AirPort Utility to turn off wireless operation and put it into "bridge mode".  You could also configure a "roaming network".
By setting up this way, does it slow down the transfer rate?
    Between what and what?

  • Time Capsule Set Up With Neighbor's WiFi

I use my neighbor's WiFi (with permission and password). I can't get the set up for my time machine to work. I keep hitting this wall where it no longer can find my wireless device (the time capsule) after I "connect" the airport utility to the existing network upstairs. What am doing wrong?

Does the neighbor's computer(s) connect to the time capsule successfully? That might be a clue...?

  • HT1178 time capsule set up with static ip

Is set up of a time capsule the same with a static IP address as with a dynamic address?
Is it still just plug it in and use airport utility to set up.

    Thanks for you help
    ppgnho

That means static IP on the LAN side.. that is set via the airport utility and is simple to do.. just go to the Network tab in the airport utility and use the dhcp reservation.
I am not sure what version utility you are using but it looks like this in v5.
    And like this in v6.
    Click the + for reservations..
This is so the port forwarding goes to the same device.
See Tesserax doco on port forwarding here.

  • Time capsule setting up problem after factory reset

What's the next step after factory reset to set up my time capsule again???
i did factory reset for 4-5 times and i cant use my time capsule to create a network, join an existing network or anything else.
i also tried normal reset but still nothing can be done.
There is always a message at the end " an unexpected error occured. Try again"

Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet..
Make sure the computer has no other network running and nothing else is plugged into the TC.. just TC Lan port to the computer ethernet.
Now press reset and open airport utility.
Generally you will have no issue once it is isolated. Do the setup and then you can disconnect and put it back in the network.
If it doesn't work, is the LED on the TC flashing amber or what??
Is the ethernet port connectivity LED on?

  • Time Capsule - bought in San Diego USA. MacBook Pro bought in Jakarta, Indonesia. Why won't my Time Capsule set up? All I get is the flashing amber light.

I bought a Time Capsule in San Diego, California. I bought my MacBook Pro in Jakarta, indonesia where I live. I have Wi Fi in the house which I use for mail etc with my Mac. However, my Time Capsule will not set up, all I get is the amber flashing light. Could it be anything related with a production bought in the USA that may not be compatible (wireless frequency?) with a product bought in SE Asia?

Did you perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule before you tried to set it up?  That would be a requirement any time that you change locations or networks on the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.  It is now reset and can be set up to connect to your "new" network.
Assuming that you have the right wall plug adapter, the Time Capsule will run on 100-240 Volts and 50-60 Hz, so it will operate just about anywhere in the world from a power standpoint.
There are some differences in allowed wireless channels between the U.S. and S.E. Asia, so use channels......36, 40, 44, or 48 on the 5 GHz band in case the higher channels are not allowed where you are.

  • Windows 7 and time capsule set-up

I have read multiple issues about Time Capsule and windows 7 connectively problems.
I also am having some difficulty setting up the time capsule from a windows 7 machine. Is it true you need to change your IP of the windows machine to 10.0.1.10 address to communicate with the time capsule during set-up?
Any windows only instructions for set-up?

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

  • Initial Time Capsule Set Up

I got my Time Capsule with my MacBook 2.5 years ago, but I haven't gotten around to setting it up until now. Unfortunately, I lost the directions (as one would expect when 2.5 years have passed) and have only the Time Capsule, Installation CD, and Power Cord. I've tried just plugging the Time Capsule into the socket, but my MacBook refuses to recognize it. When I open the Time Machine settings, it asks me to set up my Time Machine, but I don't know how. It's incredibly frustrating, because nowhere can I find HOW to set it up, and I want to back up my computer in case it crashes like my friend's just did. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated I'm totally lost!
Oh, and I also have no idea what kind of internet I'm on. I'm at a boarding school, so it's just there, but no one (except the IT guys) knows the type. I do have access to wireless and ethernet though.
