Time Capsule.....should we purchase on Black Friday?

Okay, I was all set to purchase Time Capsule today, then read some unflattering reviews and looked through some issues on this discussion board. My wife and I are long-time Mac users and the only issue we've ever had with an Apple product was activating one of our iPhones in Summer, 2007. We have several macs (iMac 2 years old, Macbook 1 year old, and several other older iMacs). So far, we've used Airport Extreme (original UFO device) and Airport Express for networking and Airtunes. We also manually update with a hard drive. So the question......status quo or Time Capsule? Should we wait to see if some of the issues get resolved or are the issues isolated? Any advice would be great.

  • Appliances for new home...Should I wait for "Black Friday" price discounts?

I will be making a big purchase of 3-4 large kitchen appliances for my new home, but I am concerned about the upcoming "Black Friday" price discounts. I need to buy my appliances this weekend, and I cannot wait for anticipated price discounts. If I purchase now, and then the price is discounted later on, will I be eligible for the new discounted price?

    Hello SD-BaLLaH -
Congratulations on your new home!  While normally you are able to do a thirty day price match guarantee on Appliances, our Thanksgiving weekend sales are exempt from price matching.  This would include trying to obtain a price match on a previous purchase.
I hope this offers some clarity!

  • ITunes to time capsule when a purchase is made

I want to down load purchases straight from itunes to my time capsule,  my mac air is full and it seems to always be an issue.

It would be better to put your iTunes material on an external disk connected to your MacBook Air via USB.

  • Stuck in calculating time remaining, what do i do, its my second airport time capsule that i purchased as the first had a faulty hard drive, why is this soo hard!

    Mavericks is the pain here.
It can lose the network connection half way through a backup.
When you connect by ethernet (good to get that.. hope it is the thunderbolt to ethernet).. did you turn off the wireless.. this is important.. nothing changes if the wireless is still on.
I recommend you start over. Keep the wireless on for this part.
    Stop the backup.
    Factory reset the TC.
Redo the TC setup but this time use all short names, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
I know the airport utility will suggest apple names..
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.
    Don't fall for it.
    Use TCgen5
For wireless name use TCwifi (or if you want more control, TC24ghz and change 5ghz to TC5ghz).
    Wipe the current TM setup.
Use A4 to reset it. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
With wireless off now and just ethernet connection try the backup again.
No luck manually mount the TC hard disk in finder. Go/Connect to Server.
AFP://TCname.local (replace TCname with your new nice short name.. and use the domain which is local by default).
    OR
Use AFP://10.0.1.1 (Replace with whatever IP the TC uses.. but it must be static.. easy for router mode.. not so easy if the TC is in bridge mode).
The Computer will request the password.. type in whatever password you used for disk access.. by default it ithe device password. If you did not change it then default is public.
This setup has worked for other people.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5951390?tstart=0
I cannot guarantee you won't need to reboot the TC oocasionally as it does fall over.
There are other bits that I keep forgetting..
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local for both wireless and ethernet in the computer.
Once you finish the main backup the short incremental backups can work over wireless.. so just turn wireless back on.

  • HT3728 I keep getting error code 6584 on my time capsule - should I do a hard reset?

    any help???

This error has to do with the backup requiring a verification.
A hard reset is ok, but I doubt it will fix the problem.
Look at the info for verify in Pondini.
    See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
There is also a long thread looking at this particular error.

  • I bought an external hard drive from apple puter (I thought) should I be able to see my pictures in the time capsule? I never set up the time capsule I just plugged it in and it seemed ready to go. But can't see the pictures

I bought an external hard drive from the apple store. I didn't set up time machine I just plugged it in and it seemed good to go. When I go into time capsule should I be able to see my pictures? I would think i could but all I see is a spot for the pictures to be

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • How to connect my time capsule & macbook to the internet?

I purchased a Time Capsule last weekend to back up all my photos etc.  I was able to set up the Time Capsule with Airport Utility and now have my home network set up, I can easily get everything I need on my Macbook Pro (mid 2009, Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 if that helps?) EXCEPT I can't get the time capsule to connect to the internet.  For some reason whenever I want to access my pictures or the time capsule, I have to connect to the wireless network but if I want to connect to the internet I have to reconnect to my old wireless network.  I have tried everything but just can't get it to work correctly! The Time Capsule light has only ever flashed orange at me...

time capsule should be in bridge mode and plugged into your main router so it is part of the existing network.
Bridge on you Lion version is easy as you can still download and install a real utility.

  • Connect Time Capsule to BT Home Hub ?

I recently purchased the Time Capsule and want to connect it to my BT Home Hub, using the Airport Utility on the CD that comes with Time Capsule I follow all the on screen prompts about adding it to my existing wireless network. The Time Capsule updates and then a message comes up about it re-starting, after this message closes the Airport Utility shows an error message and says that no Apple wireless device can be found. I have to reset the Time Capsule for it to show up on the list again
My BT Home Hub is WEP protected and I've seen a few posts and forums around the web saying that the Time Capsule is WPA protected. If that was the case why does it give the option for WEP passwords.
Anybody else had this problem or knows of a workaround ? - I don't want to have to change my security settings on my BT Home Hub to WPA/ WPA2 as this will have a knock on issue with other items I use on my wireless network.
Any assistance would be appreciated as I spent 5 hours last night playing around with settings to no avail - All I managed to connect was the Time Capsule to my Mac (just to make sure it was working).
    Regards
    Andrew

Silly question, but how should I initially set up the Time Capsule to set it as a secondary router ? by creating a new wireless network or something else - do I need to attached the ethernet cable from my main wireless BT Home Hub for intial set up ? *NOTE: I currently have the Time Capsule attached by wireless to my Mac so therfore cannot access the internet at the same time without changing network.
I'm currently at work so forgive the abbreviated exact terms for the selection process for adding the Time Capsule, should I select the first option from the list when prompted ie "to add or replace device on wireless network..." as oposed to selecting "add device to existing wireless network" ?
I understand about setting it to "bridge" just wondered the best way to get to that point to allow me to do that.
Any further assistance would be very much appreciated
    Regards

  • New 1TB Time Capsule - Only 929 GB?

I know it's common for hard drives to have a bit less space than advertised, but the new Time Capsule I just purchased began fresh with only 929 GB of memory - 71 GB short of a TB.
That's quite a difference, even for a drive this large.
Bottom line: is this normal or should I contact Apple?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Also there is this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419?viewlocale=en_US
Also the problem occurs because ISO has accepted a standard which does drop you from actual formatted space when you deal with hard drives. I can't say why or how this happened, but it did.

  • Can't migrate files from time capsule, resource temporarily unavailable

My old iMac 20" Intel late 2006 crashed. It got slower and froze as well as lines across, so I thought it's the graphic card. At the same time the SOPHOS Anti virous detected malware and trojan on my computer which was removed manually.
Unfortunately with the 20" late 2006 model the card cannot be replaced. Ran hardware test and did not indicate any hardware issues. Finally could not boot from the disc. When I turned on the machine, I could hear fans running and some other noice but only black screen. We back up our computers every hour onto a time capsule.
I purchased a new iMac 21.5 " and thought it will be easy to migrate everything from the time capsule. I done it in the past when I had to replace the hard drive on the old iMac 2 years ago.
Unfortunately when I try to access the time capsule, I received the message of data damaged and now resource temporarily unavailable. How can I retrieve my data? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You will be in deep trouble if the TM backup is corrupt..
Run the verify disk on the sparsebundle.. Pondini has some instructions here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Look at A5
Also there are manual methods of getting as much as possible from the backup if it is not corrupted too badly..
    Look at http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
He gives several methods to restore files.. read Q14-17.

  • Setting up Time Capsule on existing network

Apologies if this has been answered before, I looked at relevant discussions but couldn't find the exact solution.
I currently use a FIOS router/connection which I share with my roommate. I just purchased a TC that I intend to use for backups.
Ideally, I'd like to keep the TC in my room (not where the router is), but this is not completely necessary. And obviously, I'd prefer whichever option provides the best speed for internet connection. Backup speed is secondary, as my computer is not going anywhere (it's a desktop).
What is the best way to set up the Time Capsule: should I plug it into the router via Ethernet? The computer via Ethernet? Is there a way to do it all over wireless?
I'm using a new TC with a Mac Pro, OS 10.9.2.
    Your help is much appreciated!

You can locate the TC anywhere that an Ethernet cable will reach. Runs up to 300 feet are possible with virtually no signal loss.
Best performance option.......Ethernet from the router to the TC.....Ethernet from the TC to the Mac
Next best option.....Ethernet from the router to the TC.....Wireless from the TC to the Mac
Expect a 15-25% loss in speed with each wall that the wireless signal must pass through between the TC and the Mac. Here, I am assuming that you do not have cement walls.

  • Using Time Capsule as a 'wireless' router and backup using Time Machine

I have a question about backup speed on my 1 TB Time Capsule. I purchased a Time Capsule about a year ago and have an imacg5 and two Mac laptops that I setup to use the wireless router capability and as the backup drive for all three computers.
I was experiencing a problem in that the backups from the imacg5 were never completing even though the Time Machine window said it was only backing up several MBs. In order to 'fix' the problem I finally 'erased' all of the backup files on the Time Capsule using Airport Utility. I had also run Disk Utility on all of the drives to verify and fix any problems.
When I initialized the wireless connections and initiated backups I connected to the imacg5 to the Time Capsule with an ethernet connection as well as via Airport and began 'backing up' my laptops, then started by backing up individually, various disks on my imacg5.
The laptops have rather small disks and backed up rather quickly. The imacg5 has hundreds of GB of data spread across several disks. I had decided to 'backup' the disks individually in case that had been the cause of my original problem.
My systems disk, Macintosh HD, backed up about 110 GB at the rate of 8 GBs per hour. I was encouraged.
My next 'data' disk, LaCie 320 #1, backed up about 209 GB at the rate of 2 GBs per hour. I was confused. This 'backup' took several days to complete. Once it completed, Time Machine has run about every hour as expected and completes the backup in about 3 minutes.
I still have two more disks on the imacg5 to backup. Does anyone have any idea what rate I should expect or should I just add the drives and let it take its course?

    I say just do it!
When connected via ethernet I turn off the airport connection on the computer. I found that frequently my mom's macbook pro would choose the wireless connection to her Time Capsule rather than the ehternet connection to do the back up. This was slower than via the ethernet.

  • Compatibility of Time Capsule with Speedstream 4100 modem from AT&T

I currently use a Cisco router with a speed stream 4100  modem from AT&T. It works fine.  When I hooked up my new time capsule it connected to the Internet but the speed was extremely slow. Some webpages would not completely load.  I spent hours on the phone with tech support from AT&T and also from Apple. No solution. I exchanged the Time Capsule for a new one; same problem.  It also won't download the firmware update after multiple attempts (possibly because of slow connection speed?).  Has anyone found any issues of compatibility between the time capsule and the speed stream 4100 using AT&T's DSL service?  My computer is an iMac I purchased within the last year and I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If I plan to use the correct set up method you indicate should I reset the time capsule to the factory settings before beginning?
Your last post indicated that you already had the TC setup to provide PPPoE service, but it would not hurt to start from scratch in case there are some older stored settings on the TC that might conflict with the setup.
After I've changed the settings on the modem and connected it to the time capsule should I then use airport utility to finish setting up the time capsule?
    Yes
Do I need to enter my network password in the time capsule set up? If it's using PPPoE, I think I would need to enter one.
If you are asking about your user name and password with your Internet Service Provider, that information would be entered on the PPPoE page during the configuration of the TC.  The page will look something like this:
No entry is needed next to Service Name.
Are there any other settings that I need to change in the time capsule set up?
Remember, if you start over from a Factory Default Reset, then you will need to enter a device name for the TC, device password, wireless network name, and wireless password.  The setup utility will walk you through.

  • Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash

The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?

think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
    8 bits = 1 byte
    8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here.

  • Time Capsule can't connect to the internet

    Hi,
I've looked around these forums and can't seem to find a solution to my (quite specific) problem. I'll try to be as clear as I can - I'm not bad on computers, but network stuff goes way over my head.
I've just moved to Moscow, bringing my TC with me. When I arrived, the landlord had set up broadband for me, with a Motorola SB5101E Surfboard Cable Modem. I plugged the modem into my Macbook via Ethernet (no TC involved yet) and I got on the internet straight away.
Later, though, I tried to hook the modem up to my TC to get wi-fi. I plugged the Ethernet cable into the WAN port on the back.
Straight away, I had no internet access. I did a hard reset (pen on the small button on the back of the TC) and used Airport Utility to set the TC up again. Before it completed, I got the message:
'Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address'.
I hadn't played around with any of the settings, using it purely to create a new wireless network. It was all set to DHCP, automatic everything.
IP address currently starts with 169.
I've tried powering down both modem and TC, for up to 12 hours at one point. I've also tried reconnecting them in various orders - ie modem first, then TC, and vice versa.
None of this is made any easier by the fact that I have no idea who my ISP is or any of that info as I have no Russian yet and my landlord doesn't speak any English.
So... is there anything anyone can suggest? I'm sorry that I can't give any more info than I have.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions!
Cable modems need a complete reset whenever the device that is directly connected to them is changed.
Power down the modem and pull the battery if it has one. Wait at least 30 minutes. (It may take your service much longer to reset).
Power down the rest of your system as well. When you are ready, power up the modem and let it run for 10-15 minutes. Then, power up the Time Capsule and let it run for 5-10 minutes and finally your computers.
If your modem has a single ethernet port, then Connection Sharing for your Time Capsule should be set to "Share a single IP address".
If you have a combination modem/router (it will have 3-4 ethernet ports), the correct setting as noted below for Connection Sharing would be "Off (Bridge Mode)"
