Time Capsule slow internet with Linksys router

I has issues with slow internet page loads. I have a Linksys WAG325N router connect to Telstra ADSL 2 with a Time Capsule. I use two wireless network one broadcasted from Linksys and the other wireless network from the Time Capsule. When i'm connected to the time capsule i had slow internet page loads and the Time Machine backups fail.
When connected to the wireless network from the Time Capsule i get 10% to 30% packet loss when i pinged the Linksys router and 0% packet loss when i pinged the Time Capsule.
I then connected to the Linksys router then i has packet loss with i pinged the Time Capsule and 0% loss when i pinged the Linksys.
I used the Airport Utility and changed the "Ethernet WAN Port" from automatic to "10 Mbps/Full Duplex".
This seem to fix the problem. I think there is some issue with the port speed negotiation between the Linksys and Time Capsule.
Time Capsule 7.4.2
LinkSys V1.00.13(01)

The same thing is happening to me, exactly. Although my top speed is lower than yours (I'm on FiOS). Unplug it for a second, and you're back to normal. Otherwise, it will slowly and inexorably degrade until you have something worse than dial-up.
This is completely unacceptable, and it's far too typical of the current state of Apple's quality control and support that there is no official acknowledgment of this screamingly obvious and annoying problem, which happens every single time I use my Time Capsule, which is to say every day, and no recommended fix.
Sometimes I feel as if I could really hate this company!

how to use Time Capsule via INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB Cloud

Get a vpn router.. I have no idea where you are in the world but you can find reasonable stuff for not too much money or even a general router that takes third party firmware like dd-wrt can run openvpn.
Set up the vpn router in place of the TC, as the main router in the network. Simply bridge the TC and place it behind the router. It will be accessible as part of the network via the vpn.
This is the only safe way to do it via windows.
    http://www.dyncommunity.com/questions/18132/accessing-time-capsule-from-windows- 7-over-the-int.html
If you google around I have seen posts about how to access TC by port forwarding SMB on the TC.. using a different port.. To me this is going to slow down the hackers by a day or two.. then they will discover the open port and access your network.. not just the TC.. they now have SMB access to everything. Don't do it. There is very little security on SMB.

  • Time Capsule Range Extension With Linksys?

I just bought a new Time Capsule to enable family automated back-ups and networked storage.  I replaced a Linksys router as the main router for the house and now I have lost wifi range - particularly in the room where we sit to stream video!! I don't have another cable connection in the house to add another router unfortunately.  Is there a way I could use my linksys router to wireelssly extend the Time Capsule range?  If so - can anyone point me to a layman's guide for setting this up?  I have searched the forums but the basics don't seem to be available.  Thanks in advance for any help.

The answer is basically no, Apple make their routers to work with Apple routers.. and all others are excluded from the club.
But do you know how many models Linksys make? Over the years it must come to several hundred. Apple make 3 routers.. so it is kind of easy.. and they all play nicely together. Linksys makes/made hundreds and they don't even work with each other let alone every other brand.
To work with Apple router it will need universal repeater mode.. this is almost never available in Linksys firmware. But third party firmware like dd-wrt will sometimes work.
Check the listing if your model linksys works. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
Overall though universal repeater is not the best way to do things. It is not particularly stable or fast because all packets are double handled.. being received and retransmitted.. halves the speed.
So the easy way to fix the problem is another apple router.. it will slot in without any hassles and extend wireless.
That is still slower than direct wireless, because it still double hops the wireless.
    So other solutions.
    1. Wire it.. even if you don't have another cable connection now.. to stream video ethernet is the winner hands down. Nothing else comes close.
    2. HomePlug or what we call EOP adapters. Send ethernet over power. These work better than wireless if you have same circuit or even via a fuse box.. they can be slow if the house uses breakers instead of fuses.. they require direct power point connection.. and single phase.. but if it does work, it is stable and doesn't drop out and change from day to day the way wireless does.
    3. If the Linksys was working ok and you could stream over wireless to the areas you needed it. Then clearly the TC is not the right product for you or it is in the wrong role. Put the Linksys back as the main router and bridge the TC to it.. so it no longer is main router, but simply another WAP and network switch.. It can still do TM backups fine.
    4. Alternatively setup the Linksys as a secondary WAP plugged into the TC by ethernet. It is good to space them a few feet apart.. so get a decent length ethernet patch cord and run the linksys in WAP mode if it has one.. or wan bypass if it doesn't. All wireless routers effectively can work as merely a WAP. (wireless access point) Set the IP address correctly .. for example plugged into a TC at default, set linksys to 10.0.1.250 and turn off dhcp. Plug LAN to LAN. Then you can set a fixed channel for wireless say 11, and leave the TC to use one of the other channels.
I can give more info if you need on setup of either of these.

  • Setting up old time capsule to work with UVerse Router

I have a 3rd generation TC and need to connect to UVerse Router.I only need one
network. am using sys.7.5 on old iMac. 2006  I have Ethernet cable.
    Please help. Thanks.

Suggest that you use the Mavericks Mac to set up the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the four LAN <--> ports on the Uverse router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for the listing of AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on Time Capsule
The illustration below shows an AirPort Extreme. You will see Time Capsule
Clicking on Time Capsule will open up the setup wizard. It will take a minute to analyze the network, then display a window that looks like this, except that you will see a Time Capsule icon. Since the Time Capsule will run circles around the Uverse wireless, I I assume that you are planning to turn off the wireless on the Uverse router.
Network Name......Enter a short, simple name for the Time Capsule wireless network
Base Station.........Enter a short, simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule
Password..............Enter a password which will be used for the Network and Base Station
    Verify.....................Enter the password again
    Click Next
The setup utility will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
    That's it.

  • Access Time Capsule over internet with Windows??

Is this possible? I have a MobileMe account, and if required a dynamic dns hostname.
My Time Capsule is behind a router. What firewall settings do I need to allow?
    Thanks

I'd suggest going over to http://www.dyndns.org and pick up a dynamic DNS. that will allow you to access your Timecapsule even if your ip address changes.
typically Windows wont work with afp:// addresses (which is appleshare) Windows natively uses SMB:// (samba/windows filesharing) you should be able to set up the smb sharing using timecapsule.
Looking at the time capsule setup, it looks like smb:// is automatically supported so you should type
    smb://TCexternal_IPaddress
    instead of afp://

  • Time Capsule slow internet over wireless after 1 day (not so over ethernet)

I have had my time capsule since they first came out, so I guess about 8 months.
I have had this issue since day one, but I have decided this is just too much.
I have a 25Mb connection, and when I first plug in the TC I get the full speed. BUT... I am down to about 500Kb/s after 2 days, about 300 and so on until it stops at about 65K/s, LESS THAN 1 Mb!
If I unplug it for less then 1 sec and plug it back in, the cycle starts all over agin.
HOWEVER!, This is not the case over ethernet. Everything over ethernet will always get the full speed. It does not degrade, so it has nothing to do with my ISP. They are routed through the TM.
I have auto TM turned OFF on all machines, and backups are ONLY done manually. (I only do them once a week over ethernet).
I have tried every setting, every channel.
The speed does not come back if I simply restart it via software. I must unplug it (only for a split second).
It is 11 feet away from me (counting the angle( it is on a shelf)). My signal is great, and there is nothing else around it.
And this is my second one. The last one did this as well.

The same thing is happening to me, exactly. Although my top speed is lower than yours (I'm on FiOS). Unplug it for a second, and you're back to normal. Otherwise, it will slowly and inexorably degrade until you have something worse than dial-up.

  • Problem connecting to internet with linksys router after internet network password reset

I do not know the model number of the wireless linksys router offhand, but it is one known to have a bug regarding connecting the internet. Others have solved the problem by buying another model number, but the person who owns it does not want to buy a new one since he does not know how to use any other one.
What happened is our phone company (also the internet provider) was having technical problems so there no internet connection. Then, my computer opened with internet page to reset password to connect.
Although I am able to get a connection on my wireless laptop, this other person in house is unable to connect to wired computer through linksys.

Hi. WUSB300N is actually a wireless usb n adapter. A wireless receiver not a wireless access point or a router. You may want to check if you have a wireless Linksys or Cisco router there.

  • Slow internet with Linksys E2500

Hi-  I have an e2500 that I have bought about 7 months ago.  Recently (about a week ago), it started to perform slow wired or wireless showing a speed of 120kbps.  I have 5Mbps service from the ISP (Cox).  I checked the speed at the modem and it was about 5Mbps.  I have applied all the suggested online tips to speed it up (disabled Vmm, QoS, updated firmware, router reset,  20khz, etc..) nothing worked. This is my second linksys.  My first one lasted just over a year so decided to upgrade it to the e2500.  Now I am having problems with this one too.  I am stuck. this is my last attemp before I ditch it amd move on to another brand.
    Appreciate your help in advance.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi again,
Just want to tell you that I did a hard reset to the router last night after the firmware upgrade.  Nothing changed.  The bandwidth is still slow.   There is one thing that I have discovered though. I have three laptops at home, a Gateway (OS: Windows 7), an HP (Windows 7) and an Asus (Windows 8.1). When one is on line, the internet speed on that laptop is fine; 5m upload and 1M download.  I don't do any gaming I just surfing the internet.   As soon as another laptop goes on line, the upload speed drops to .33m and the download drops to .19m.  It doesn’t matter which combination of laptops I turn on.  My Vonage phone will ring one time and then it goes directly to the voice mail.  sometimes when the bandwidth is somewhat decent, you will notice a delay during the conversation.  If the third one goes online, neither one of us can go to the internet. Like I mentioned before, I have disabled the Vmm and the UPnP.  Nothing seems to help.  This started a week to 10 days ago.  I have had the same setup for about 7 months with no problem.  Any other ideas?  Thanks.

Your wireless network will probably just work without any fiddling You could also launch your 'Airport set-up assistant' which should be in your Utilities Folder.

  • Time Capsule Slow WLAN to internal disk with internet data transfers

    All,
I've been experiencing slow responses from my Time Capsule since I got it. It is one of the newer models with dual band and I have a Macbook Pro and a Macbook connecting to the 802.11n network.
I use the internal disk of the Time Capsule as a NAS and I don't use it for Time Machine backups. It houses software, pictures and music files.
When I'm downloading files from the internet via Safari, or via Transmission (torrents) the wifi throughput of the WLAN slows down from about 5 megabytes per second to just a couple of hundred kilobytes per second.
For my tests I used a 2.2Gb DMG file (a Garageband Jampack) which was housed on the Time Capsule disk.
With Transmission running and downloading two torrents and seeding two torrents (capped upload of 2 kilobytes per second), the transfer of the file from the Time Capsule was 4 hours. I let it run a few hours just to determine that the ETA in Finder was fairly accurate.
With Transmission stopped, the transfer of the same file took 9 minutes.
With Transmission stopped but with Safari downloading a large file (400mb), the local Time Capsule file download to my Mac was again looking at around 4 hours.
It also impacts file uploads to the Time Capsule disk but no where near as badly as with downloads. According to activity monitor, throughput from the Time Capsule disk to my Mac over Wifi is around 200 kilobytes per seconds, writing to the Time Capsule was around 900 kilobytes per second.
Both upload and download speed increases dramatically when no internet based file transfers are taking place.
Now the odd thing. I have a TVIX 6500a media player attached to the Time Capsule via gigabit ethernet. In all the tests I've performed (using the same DMG file) the data transfer rate, both reading and writing to the TVIX has always been solid at nearly 5 megabytes per second.
It is almost like the Time Capsule prefers internet originated traffic over WLAN traffic to its own internal disk, and really throttles this traffic. And it lets traffic originating from other devices on the network through on all cylinders.
I know technically a Time Capsule is designed for Time Machine however I can't see how it would be a viable solution given the bad data rates when downloads are taking place.
Is there any way to get under the hood of a Time Capsule to make some adjustments? I wonder if anyone else has had any experience with this, and what might happen if I plug in a USB disk and use that instead. It is starting to look like I might have to get a decent NAS to connect to the Time Capsule but then it is just a larger heavier Airport Extreme.
    Thanks in advance.

    Mikecad1 -
I dont have any assistance to offer, but have experienced similar problems.
When trying to offload all my music from an external drive to a Time Capsule, it was estimating WEEKS to do it. Even with the HD connected right to the Time Capsule. It's like the WLAN wanted all traffic to go out then come back in before being written.
My solution in that case was to disconnect my laptop from the WLAN, with the drive hooked up to it via USB and then Cat5 to the Time Capsule and do a direct transfer like that. 2 hours instead of weeks.

  • Slow internet with Time Capsule

I just bought a 4th generation Time Capsule to replace my Airport extreme.
With the Time Capsule my internet speed has drobbed to less them .60 mps.
When I reattach my Airport extreme I get 6 mps
I am using the lastest firmware (7.6.1) I have checked all of my setting and so has Apple.
Apple has replaced the Time Capsule 2 times, but the 3rd one still has the same problem.
When connect the DSL Modem directly to the computer  or the old airport extreme everything is fine.
Apple is now saying that maybe it's my dsl modem, but AT&T says everything is fine and I am running the lastest firmware on the dsl modem.
I am running system 10.8.2 on an iMac and MacBokk Pro with Retina... Also a couple of iPads
Anyone else had this problem? Solution? Ideas?
    Thanks.. Jim

Very interesting.. and Apple have not even really tried to troubleshoot this.
What model is the old airport extreme? Give me the A1xxx from the foot.
A screen shot of the setup would be very useful.. particularly the wireless.
    Is the modem in bridge?
Can you bridge it and try with the TC doing pppoe?
Or do you have the modem running as router and the AEBS /TC in bridge?
When you run the TC what is the wireless link speed?
What about speed sharing a file in the local network?
I suspect your problem maybe the WAN to LAN throughput which has been reported in some cases as being an issue.. with no resolution.. the bug does not hit everyone so it could be just the combo of that particular dsl modem and TC that is part of the issue.

  • My MacBook Po can not connet with Time Capsule for Internet. Back-up are ok

    Hi to all,
If I connect the ADSL line to Time Capsule no Internett available.
If connect the live with eternet cable to MacBook pro all is fine.
Mack book pro do all the backup with Time Capsule in WiFi
Hot to have the MacBook connectid to Time Capsule in WiFe for internet too??
Easy explanation please, I'm really beginner

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.
Yes, it appears to work without plugging into my tower.
    Correct, it will work.
I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection.  You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

  • 1st generation Time Capsule - unstable internet connection

    Hello,
I just bought new mac (iMac 27') and Time Capsule (1st generation firmware 7.6.3) When i connected Time Capsule instead my old router, internet connection is very tricky. When my iMac is connected by Lan cable and Wifi on mac is off , everything is fine. But when any device (iPhone, iPad) connect on wifi, internet connection becomes very unstable (including iMac on lan cable!!!). But wifi connection inside my network seems ok (i can use time capsule with no problem).
In the AirPort utility is the "pilot lamp" near the Time Capsule still green. But between Time Capsule and internet change green and amber color every 30 sec (estimate).
I tried both (2.4 and 5 GHz) WiFi but with no solution. When i use my old router, everythink is ok. Or when I unplug all WiFi devices (WiFi router on time capsule can still runs) and my iMac is connected by cable, everything is ok too.
I don't know if is it known problem, but i guess it can be hardware trouble.
    Thank you for any answer
    Jan

    Ok, that is Gen4.
    And the fault is unusual.
I recommend a full factory reset.
But downgrade the firmware first. 7.6.3 is known to be problematic. Simply hold down the option key whilst you select version in the airport utility. You can only go back to 7.6.1 though.
The quick method of factory reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Gently it is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed).
Power on the TC.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults.
Setup wireless and TC with short names .. no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Use different name for 5ghz.
I also recommend you install the old utility so you can access the TC log.. the new v6 utility has no log access.. so you are completely without clues as to what is happening. Not that the log is exactly helpful but it is worth a look.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
For screen shots see this post.

  • Can I Use My Time Capsule as a 2nd Wireless Router? Pls Help

Thanks for trying to help. I have a Time Capsule that I'm currently using to back up my files. My next door neighbor is willing to share his internet with me for half the monthly cost. He already has a wireless router and I can connect to it (no probs) except the signal strength is not so powerful since I'm a couple feet far from his router. I was wondering if I can use my Time Capsule to hook up the internet via WIFI through his wireless router (that way I have a stronger signal strength from my Time Capsule). Basically using my Time capsule as a 2nd wireless router.
Neighbour's wireless Router = Time Capsule = My Macbook
If I can please tell me how to set this up in details please. thanks for your time.

You are trying to set up the Time Capsule as a Wireless Router
and Repeater? - To share an existing wireless network, wireless?
The AirPort Extreme was capable of repeating (like a transceiver)
to and from an existing wireless network, to expand upon it; but
only did this with another AirPort product, such as an Express.
The Time Capsule and many of its features are outlined here, with more
information: AirPort + Time Capsule: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
You may have to direct your question regarding expanding an existing
wireless network, to the Discussions section for the specific products.
Usually, the "extend a network" wireless feature in the software setup
    only applies to the use of a second Apple AirPort-type base station;
such as the Extreme, Express, etc. The compatibility is between the
AirPort-like Apple products; but a bridge could be made if an Express
were attached to the other wireless network via Ethernet cable, then
the Time Capsule may be able to see it. This would require testing.

  • 1st generation time capsule 'ambers out' with increasing frequency...

Basically the title, but it seems that after several hours, my Time Capsule (1st gen) will just amber out. I can still do things locally and I'll get a 'double NAT' warning. That's all fixed once I unplug and replug in the TC, for a while that is.Then eventually, it'll 'get tired' and just amber out with the same warning. Basically, it's fast becoming very difficult to keep a working rythym since it's constantly going down (when green, throughput is great - 5MB in from the WAN and full(ish) gigabit ethernet locally). It's on a plant ledge with plenty of air flow and it doesn't ever seem TOO hot (just warm) so I doubt it's an overheating issue, but who knows.
    Anyway, who knows?
    Thanks!

The Time Capsule is telling you that you do not have it configured correctly to work most effectively on your network.
Double NAT is usually an indication that you another router "upstream" from the Time Capsule....(you might call this device your "modem", but it is likely a router). This can cause network slow downs and IP address conflicts.
Both your "modem" and the Time Capsule are trying to perform routing duties. You only want one device on a network to handle the routing chores.
If you want to pursue this further, what is the make and model number of your "modem"?
