Time Capsule - Some Quikc Questions Before I Buy One!

I was all set to buy an Airport Extreme this weekend but just last night, my backup drive died. So, TC is just an Airport Extreme with a disk in it, yes? No more, no less?
If so, two quick questions:
a) I assume you can partition the disk as part backup, part network share?
b) I assume you can hang extra disk(s) off the USB port and use it as a network share?
Anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks!

You cannot partition the TC's internal HDD without physically removing it.
b) I assume you can hang extra disk(s) off the USB port and use it as a network share?
Yes.
Anything else I should be aware of?
Make sure it's the newest TC as it supports dual band.

  • Some LE8 questions before I buy?

    Hi everyone,
I want to go over to Logic. I don't think I need Pro as I currently run Cubase SE.
I am using a G4 1.25dp MD with 10.4.11, 2g RAM and M-Audio Delta44. I noticed that this seems to be the minimum spec.
My average project would be 12 audio tracks, 3-4 midi using 2-3 instruments (drums, strings) and usual compressors/reverbs etc.
Wil this run OK or would I be better off picking up LE 7 from somewhere?
If I did go with LE7, is there a big difference in the supplied instruments and plug-ins? I have a current project on the go that needs me to do a fair amount of editing before we mix it at a better studio. Will the project files transfer to Pro OK?
    Many thanks
    G

    Hi,
looking to the learning curve, changing is something that should be well considered. If you are fine with your G4 and Cubase for the moment, i would recommend waiting until you can also get yourself a shiny new Mac with more horsepower before switching.
Transfer of files between LE8 and Pro is no problem, and LE8 has many of the same plugins (the basic program is the same, let alone the candy stuff and Surround) If you only need to mix on amateur level, LE is okay, and you could spice it up with third party plugins, too. But it totally depends on what you really need.
Since G4 is really a worst case hardware, if you must change to Logic now, get Express 7. Will probably run better, and you can transfer the projects to 8, too, i've been told.

  • Some imovie questions before I buy

I want to bring my 3D renders into imovie and then make a short Quicktime movie. What format should I render in?
I can render images as: Targa, Tiff, BMP, IFF, RLA, RPF, & Photoshop
    Still images
I have rendered some animations from my 3D app. Now I want to bring them into Imovie. Can I bring in different sizes of rendered images, or do they have to be the same size?
    240 renders 640 x 240
    288 renders 576 x 224
    200 renders 480 x 320
    120 renders 576 x 224
Can imovie import the above renders with no problem then create transitions and export as a small Quicktime file?
    Thanks

  • Airport Extreme and Time Capsule – A few questions

    Hey guys,
I have a Belkin Modem/Router with a USB port for storage, but I just found out it only has 10/100 Ethernet, and can only mount 1 hard drive to that storage port. Other than that, it works fine and I am happy with it. Its stated wireless speed is 300mbps, and it supports 802.11n draft 2.0.
I also just got a Mac, and was considering a Time Capsule for using Time Machine (Or, because am also considering a Drobo, just a straight Airport Extreme).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any point in keeping the Belkin to use as my modem if it’s got 10/100 Ethernet ports? Will that make the Time Capsule/APE (And hence the attached drives/devices) perform at the slower speed?
    2. I don’t know if I can just “turn off” the Belkins Router abilities anyway. Assuming I can’t, will having 2 routers on my network even be possible? (Mac’s software is infinitely more user friendly, and I’d want to use it for my network).
    3. Is there a limit to how many Hard Drives I can connect to an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule? (My Belkin can only share one, even via a USB Hub – it only sees the first drive.)
    4. For now, my storage drives are standard HDD’s from WD and Seagate, but I am considering a Drobo (Some form of RAID storage is happening in the next few months, for sure).
    In either case:
    a) Will Airport Extreme recognize my External Hard Drive as a Time Machine Backup Destination? (And as a Drive to store other media)
    b) Will Time Capsule recognize my external hard drive, in addition to itself (Since it’s also a Hard Drive?)
    5. This page: ((http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/features/harddrivesharing.html)  says: “You can set up password-protected accounts for everyone on the network or allow read-only access to certain files and folders.”
Some folders, I don’t even want to allow read only access to. Can I require a password before they can be viewed, or modified/deleted? (If I go the time capsule rout, I would want to protect the drives attached to it, and probably not the HD on the capsule itself).
    6. Also, the rest of my computers are PC’s, and I was wondering if it’s possible (and safe) to set up time machine to backup to the time capsule for Mac, and allow the other PC’s to backup to it using their version of “Time Machine” too?
I know this will leave less room for mac and PC backups, but it would free up room on my Drobo / HDD’s
    7. Can Time Machine backup wirelessly to other drives, such as http://shop.nextbyte.com.au/Script/MCH/Products/532195-NextByte-WDBACG0020HCHAES N-WD-My-Book-Live-2TB
Thanks so much for your help.
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with the Airprort/Time Capsule?

    No help?

  • Some quick questions before purchase of MBP

    Hey Guys/Gals,
I've been a PC user all my life, but will now be making a permanent switch to Macs. I've been wanting to buy a MBP since they have been released, but have been hesitant (like many others I think...) about the issues of whine, extreme heat, warped screens etc...
With the recent updates of the logic board and even battery, I think I'm ready to go for it. I just had some quick questions before I place my order:
    1. I could order my MBP from the computer store at my university. Do you guys think that will get me the newest possible MBP or will they maybe get me one that they have had in stock for ages? I really don't want to get stuck with an outdated logic board and/or battery. Is it safest just to order directly from the site?
    2. Although the issue with really hot MBPs seems to have gotten better, I am still quite shocked that people say that temperatures well above 70 Celsius are "within spec". I understand that Apple officially states this and that the Intel chip can handle up to 100 Celsius, but this seems crazy to me Basically, I want to ask if I am correct in my observations that the new Intel chips don't get much hotter than other chips around, but rather Apple has chosen to set the temperature mark that sets off the fans pretty hight (around the 70s if I remember correctly?)
I would assume that in following their "mission" of creating beautifully designed computers, Apple also wants to have a really silent one. Now I'm all for a quiet machine, but I feel as though if fans were on either (a) all the time or (b) when the CPU reaches the high 50s lots of people would be happier.
Anyway, it's just a thought. I noticed there are lots of experts around here, so I'm just interested to hear what you guys think about this approach that Apple seems to have taken. I don't think the heat will stop me from getting this amazing notebook, but it certainly is a little frustrating.
    Any responses are greatly appreciated.

No matter where you take possession there's no assurance of when the machine was manufactured. There is really just as good a chance of getting a perfectly good computer regardless of place of purchase. If there is a problem it's covered under warranty. You can have the computer replaced within the first two weeks. Afterwards they will replace or repair. Without Applecare's extended warranty the computer is warranted for one year after purchase.

You are wrong in your assumption. The Core Duo's maximum temperature is 125C before shutdown. Normal operating temperatures according to Intel's own documentation is 50-70C under average load. MBPs under heavy load will typically reach core temperatures over 80C. Then there's the added heat from the hard drive and GPU. The aluminum case acts as a partial heat radiator hence the case temperatures can get high. The MBP User Guide specifically states this and issues a warning about using the computer on one's lap.

In fact the fans in the MBP are very quiet at least mine are. Unless you are in the hardware design business with intimate knowledge of using Core Duo chips in portable computers, then your observations, although certainly your opinion, are not based on anything factual.

More likely there are a lot of people around here who think they are experts. As the remark goes, "An 'expert' derives from ex, meaning 'has been', and spert, meaning 'drip under pressure.'"
You'll read lots of opinions on these forums. Don't take for granted that everything you read is factual or truth. A lot of the opinions expressed are without any basis in fact.

  • I have 2 MacBooks at home that back-up to a Time Capsule.  I'd like to buy an external Thunderbolt drive at work to have as an additional back-up. Will Time-Machine support autobackups to 2 different devices?

I have 2 MacBooks (1 Air and 1 Pro) at home that back-up to a Time Capsule.  I'd like to buy an external Thunderbolt drive at work to have as an additional back-up (so that were there to be a fire/water damage/etc) I would not lose both the computer and the backup.
Will Time-Machine support autobackups to 2 different devices?
I'd like for it to be able to backup to an external Thunderbolt drive attached to my thunderbolt display when I dock the MacBook Air to it.
Does anyone know if this will occur automatically, or if I will have to manually select backup disk?
    thanks

Yes, with Mountain Lion you can do this, but I will leave the explanation to Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini:

  • Questions before I buy Time Capsule

    Hi All
I hope you can please help with my questions before I go and buy a time capsule. I currently have a 5 month old 2.4ghz mbp and a PC running Vista. The PC is connected via ethernet to a billion 7402GL and the mbp connects via wireless. I was going to buy an external hard drive to store data and I thought I might try the time capsule as it will be networked.
I am not 100% sure I know how time capsule works so any info would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to work out the setup in my head I have had a read through these forums but I thought I would ask specific questions in relation to my setup.
When I connect the time capsule to the billion can I still use the billion for wireless or do I have to use the time capsule? Also do I connect the TC to the Billion using ethernet or wireless? I want the mbp to access the data on the TC via wireless and the pc via ethernet. I will be getting an imac once I sell my pc so that will also need to connect to TC. I will mainly use the TC for storing data but I might start using time machine as well. Is it possible for a ps3 to access TC?
I will be attaching a printer to it so I would want to be able to print from any computer that connects to the network.
What would be the best setup? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you already have a working wired/wireless network, and a spare ethernet port on your router, just connect the TC to the router with an ethernet cable. Turn off the TC's wireless, and it'll work fine.
No need to change any of your connections, you can carry on using your existing router.
Printing will work fine from any computer connected to your router (or to the TC, if you wish), but the printer driver needs to be installed on each computer, and the printer has to be one that works with the TC.
I don't think that there's a way of using the TC as a server with a PS3. The PS3 needs to see a DLNA server - I don't think that there's any way to get this running directly on a TC.
You can get a Mac to run as a DLNA server (application called "MediaLink"), and it might be possible to get the Mac to link to the TC. This way, you could access the TC from the PS3, but the Mac would have to be switched on for it to work.

  • Time Capsule and iPhone question

I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (802.1b/g) with a Time Capsule and went through the standard installation and setup procedure - no problems. I assumed that the TC was operating in 802.11N mode - there did not seem to be an option to set during the installation process. I must admit that I did not notice a marked improvement in my network speed but assumed all was well. Now some weeks lated I bought an iPhone - it immediately connected to my network. I did not even think about the N vs b/g issue. Now reading this forum I noticed that iPhones are b/g so does this mean my network automatically "downgraded" from N to b/g or has it always been running in b/g. Note I before I installed my T/C I turned-off my old AE.
I cannot figure out how to determine what mode my network / TC is running in. Can I easily swap back and forth when I need to have my iPhone connected.
I have read the thread on this forum on how to have 2 bridged networks - one with N and one with b/g (might be a good way to put my old AE and Airport Express to some use) - since I'm no network wizzard I like to keep things simple - by doing so I seem to avoid many of the issues I read about on the forum
    Thanks for any advice.

Hi Pat, I have an iPhone too and I'm quite disappointed that my nice new N router will be running at much lower speeds. When I'm at home I use both my MBP and my phone and switching back and forth doesnt sound appealing.
Anyway, to answer your question, open up the Airport Utility and click Manual Setup at bottom right. Then click on Wireless from the 4 tabs you'll see and choose the appropriate setting from the Radio Mode drop down menu.
    Hope this helps!

  • VERY Complicated iTunes/Time Capsule/Library Transfer Question

Hi all-- looking for some help before I move my beloved iTunes library (over 500GB) from an old PC to a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to store the music files on the Time Capsule and access everything wirelessly. When I am away from the apartment/TC, I'll usually have my iPod on me-- which I would just plug in and access it through iTunes.
MOST important would be to have everything transfer over and run clean and fast, without weird errors etc. If I can keep my old playlists/play counts/date added etc, great but not necessary.
Any thoughts on the best solution? Do I transfer/copy over using the new sharing function in iTunes? Or is it safer to just connect the hard drive to the computer/time capsule-- and from there, do I make a folder on the TC my default iTunes folder?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated-- I went Apple (I also just bought an iPhone) for seamless and fast solutions, so I am hoping all this works!
    Thanks,

  • First time setting up time capsule...questions on best way to set it up.

To anyone that can offer some advice,
I am currently living in Denmark, only for another 5 months or so and bought a time capsule today for back up purposes of my macbook 13 inch purchased in February of 2009. I am currently running Mac OS X Version 10.6.5. Here is my situation...My roommate and I currently have a wireless router/modem combination that was provided by the cable company. I want to back up my computer wirelessly and get the best performance out of my time capsule without interupting my other wireless network. My roommate runs a PC and has zero interest in computers (other than internet usage) and will not be using the time capsule to back up. In a best case scenario, I do not want to interfere with his current internet connection to the provided router. (essentially he won't even know I have a time capsule)
I haven't taken the time capsule out of the box yet, I want to set it up perfectly so my computer is backed up and will be backed up wirelessly for the next 5 months and when I move I simply take it with me and no issues occur. My questions are these....
What is perfect set up method for me?
Where do I plug ethernet cables for optimum performance?
Should I keep my TC located on ground floor next to current wireless router or can it be in my bedroom?
When I unplug the TC and take it home in 5 months...will setting it up as a wireless router in my new apartment affect the data stored on it?
I hope this post is clear and someone can provide some insight.
    Thanks

    that can easily be achieved.
What is perfect set up method for me?
assuming your room is on the same power circuit as the room where your friends's router is located, and if you're willing to spend a little extra $$, i would recommend this:
    ● get a pair of *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.
use them for an ethernet connection between the main router and your TC
    ● using *airport utility* (in your applications > utilities folder), i would set up the TC in +*bridge mode+*
    ● have it create a wireless network, give it a name, secure it (also password protect access to the TC's wireless router side !)
Where do I plug ethernet cables for optimum performance?
the *powerline adapters* come with a short ethernet cable. connect one to a free LAN port () on your friend's router and the other to the WAN port () of your TC.
Should I keep my TC located on ground floor next to current wireless router or can it be in my bedroom?
following my recommendations above you can set it up in your bedroom
When I unplug the TC and take it home in 5 months...will setting it up as a wireless router in my new apartment affect the data stored on it?
    no.

  • First full Time Capsule Backup Newbie Question

I'm most likely going to get a lot of crap for this newbie question but here it goes. When I setup my time capsule for the first time I want to backup it up hardwired to my IMac how do i do that. What are the steps involved I'm sure it's pretty simple plug the power cable in and connect the ethernet cable but then what. Thanks for your help all that reply

Depends on how you want to setup your future wireless network. Just follow the TC Setup Guide. If there is a problem during setup, repost.

  • Orlando (or central fl) iPhone users.... question before I buy:

Been with att/cingular/att for years. First cell phone (motorola) I ever got, dropped calls all of the time and signal strength was poor. 2nd phone (an LG, my current one) never drops a call, good signal strength, but only rings about 50% of the time. So, before I buy the iphone, despite glitches and volume issues, do the folks from O-Town have positivie experiences with
    - signal strength
    - confidence the phone will actually ring when receiving a call
    - any dropped calls?
    - any other "service" related issues you can think of?
...and to really narrow it down, I'm on the theme park side of town.

Thanks guys (and gals) for the information. I guess I'll pick one up next week.
I thought about creating this thread the other day when I pulled up next to a 20'ish guy in a gray compact who had an iphone. I wanted to flag him down and ask questions, but that would have been odd.
And yes, when I lived in celebration (phase 1), I recall reception being spotty at times. And the theme parks... good grief...it seems the most random places vary between signal no signal.
Again, thanks. I'll be in the Orlando iphone club soon enough.

  • Time Capsule - Perhaps a question too early, but interesting possibilities

I'm quite intrigued with Time Capsule. My main concern with backup is making sure that in case of a catastrophe, my information is not lost. I don't care about music/movies, etc. I can always replace the CDs/DVDs commercially--as long as I keep a list of what I have/had. Photos, home movies, and personal legal and financial documents are a bit more difficult to replicate. Especially the photos--I'd be devastated to lose pictures of my family.
Today, I pay $20 per month or so for back-up of vital information, to be stored offsite (presumably protection from a fire, etc.), but this is not enough to store my photos, so I have Time Machine for the pictures backing up to another drive. Not the most elegant solution, but the "rip to DVD periodically" approach is too unreliable (who remembers to do it?).
I work in a small office where there is a VPN set-up, connected to my house.
My question is simply this. Could a Time Capsule be set up in my office to backup machines automatically at my house? From my office computer, I can ping various devices on my home computer (can print to a networked printer at home, and from home print to a computer at the office, etc.). Is there any reason why technically this would not be possible (presumably the Time Capsule can be password protected, work as a wired network device, etc., etc., etc.).
Perhaps there is no answer today, since no one owns a Time Capsule to attempt this, but with the cancellation of the other back-up service, presumably, that $20 per month is freed up to do something else, and a TB of storage would backup all the files I need for quite some time...
    Thoughts?

Since you are able to successfully access your home network, via VPN, from the office, there's a good chance you should be able to access the Time Capsule's hard drive as well. My best guess, at this time, is that you should be able to backup your home computers with a Time Capsule from your Office.

  • Time Capsule/Airport Express Question

    Hello All-
I have an iMac (Late 2007) in my bedroom office connected to the internet via ethernet to my Time Capsule. From there, my iMac is getting it's connection wirelessly. I have an Airport Express handy and I would like to use it to hook up some speakers in my garage and use my Apple TV (v 2.3) to pipe the music in. How would I go about doing this? I want to stay on the same network that I'm on, as my computer and 2 ATV's are already on this network, if possible. Right now, I have the AE plugged into an outlet and it's blinking yellow. What steps do I need to take? Walk me through this as if I'm an 8 year old. lol. Many thanks....

The AppleTV is a wireless client but not a wireless base station. Therefore the AirPort Express (AX) can not wirelessly connect to the AppleTV.
The AX can connect to the Time Capsule wirelessly. The AX needs to be configured to connect as a wireless client.
The music playing on the AX would be controlled via iTunes on your computer. It would not be controlled via the AppleTV.
