You should be able to just reboot all the components in the network.. restart in order, modem router /TC then clients with 2 min gap.

  • Disk Utility hangs ("not responding") when attempting to Repair Disk on Time Capsule sparsebundle.  Help.

I am trying to improve the performance of my Time Machine backup and retrievals via my 2nd Gen. Time Capsule from my iMac Core 2 Duo hard drive with SL 10.6.8.  The incremental backups generally take 20 - 40 minutes each hour generally with fewer than 100 MB of data being backed up.  I have read through numerous threads on these forums about Time Capsule and Time Machine issues as well as the very helpful Pondini site (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html) and have tried many other suggestions (listed below), but have been unable to attempt a Disk Utility repair disk on the Time Capsule sparsebundle file.
After locating the sparsebundle 'file' in the finder under Shared/TC/Data, I am only sometimes able to drag the sparsebundle into the Disk Utility volumes and disk window.  About fifty percent of the time, Disk Utility hangs when attempting to drag in the sparsebundle.  If I am able to get it listed and click on "repair disk", then the beach ball begins to spin and nothing happens.  This occurs whether or not I first use AirPort Utility to "Disconnect All Users" from the Time Capsule.  I have given it over one hour to attempt the repair disk, but nothing happens, i.e., not a single message shows up in the detail window.  The beach ball just spins, and Disk Utility shows up in red as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.
Also note that on my new Macbook Air, Time Machine runs quite quickly via this same Time Capsule from my new Macbook Air using OS X Lion (which seems to indicate that the Time Capsule drive itself is OK).
I would appreciate any tips on getting Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my sparsebundle, as I seem to have exhausted most other options (see below) for improving Time Capsule performance -- aside of course, from wiping the Time Capsule clean and starting all over.... (which I really don't want to do, and from what I've read, has not helped some people who've tried this anyway).
    Many thanks!
Although I would like to focus this thread on the Disk Utility / sparsebundle "Repair Disk" problem, I should mention that I have tried the following other things:
    1.  Repaired disk permissions on my hard drive
    2.  Used Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my hard drive after starting up from a SuperDuper external backup
    3.  Run DiskWarrior on my hard drive, again, from a separate startup disk
    4.  Did the "full reset of Time Machine", a la Pondini Troubleshooting #A4
    5.  Changed my computer and Time Capsule names to simple short names with only alphanumeric characters and no spaces
    6.  Ensured that my Time Capsule is being accessed only via ethernet
    7.  Relaunched the finder
    8.  And finally, attempting to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle - thus the nature of this post

OK, no takers out there, but I answered my own question (sort of).
The answer is that even though Disk Utility shows up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu and appears to hang, it is actually still working.  A bit of patience shows that after about an hour, my Disk Utility was able to show the 1.44 TB Time Machine sparsebundle from Time Capsule in the disk window on the left hand side.  Once this appeared, I was able to click on "Repair Disk" (note that prior to doing this, I had to "Disconnect All Users" from my Time Capsule using the Airport Utility program; otherwise you will get a "could not unmount disk" error).  Again, the Repair Disk function appeared to hang Disk Utility as it showed up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.  However, after about 8 hours, Disk Utility did run the entire Repair Disk protocol on the sparsebundle.  The results DO NOT show up in the Disk Utility details window - so even if you are patient enough to let it complete, you will not see anything and may think that nothing happened.  However, you can find the familiar results of the Repair Disk function by looking on Console - find the "DiskUtility.log" under Files: ˜/Library/Logs.
Unfortunately, I was hoping to find a problem that would have been subsequently repaired which would result in dramatically increased Time Capsule speed, but this was not the case.  Disk Utility showed everything to be "OK" and I am stuck with a very slow Time Capsule....
(And of note, my new Macbook Air (OS Lion) Time Machine functions blazingly fast on both backup and retrieval to and from the very same Time Capsule - even though, these are occuring wirelessly via AirPort -- granted the size of this sparsebundle is an order of magnitude smaller at this point, i.e., only 10 GB right now)
Would still be happy to hear of any similar experiences or tips on getting Time Capsule to work more quickly.

  • Time Capsule not Showing in Airport Utility

I decided to re-set my Time Capsule this afternoon. The green light is on but it is not showing in the Airport Utility and Time Machine says there is no back up disc available.
    What can I do?

Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Restart both your Mac and the Time Capsule and then open AirPort Utility to see if your Time Capsule has been found.
If the Time Capsule is still lost, disconnect the Ethernet cable and perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule as follows:
Pulll the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Keep holding the reset button an additional 8-10 seconds and then release the button
Allow 30-40 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the spare Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports and open AirPort Utility to reconfigure the device

  • HT1338 I erased my Time Capsule HD using the Disk Utility on my Vista computer

I erased my Time Capsule HD using the Disk Utility on my Vista computer and I now can not see my TC in my computer. I tried to remap it by right clicking my computer and selecting remap drive, but after selecting Z drive I cannot find TC in browser. Not sure if I did something wrong but it was working fine before I erased it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To erase the OSX on your harddisk you have to boot your Mac from the OSx Install DVD that came with your Mac.
You can't erase the OSx from which your Mac is booted.

  • Time Capsule sparsebundle corruption help please

    Hi
I went away for a week and when I came back I found that the Time Capsule was not backing up. Apparently, my family tells me there was a power outage during my absence and, therefore, this might be the cause of the problems.
I have a Time Capsule acting as our Time Machine drive which is accessed wirelessly from a MacBook.
Double clicking on the sparsebundle got me a message that 'Resource not available' and some searching of this forum makes me think the bundle is corrupted. I followed some advice to use the Terminal to force a mount of the bundle into Disk Utility and this is what appeared in the Terminal window:
    <pre>

I am no Unix guru and I have no intention of using the Terminal except with explicit guidance as I really have no idea what I'm doing with it. As a result, I have no idea what the output means, but it doesn't look good. However I am generally technologically savvy.
As you may imagine, I would like to try to save the back ups contained in the bundle if at all possible before I hook up the laptop via ethernet to the TC and start everything again.
Right now, I have stopped further TM backups. I have already tried switching off TM, rebooting and then reselecting the TC but to no avail.
Any/all help will be so gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance
    Graeme

Please don't post messages this way. They are difficult to read. For problems with Time Machine I would suggest
you start here: User Tips for Time Machine.
Note that if you cannot mount the sparsebundle in order to repair it using Disk Utility, then the sparsebundle is beyond
help. Erase the backup drive and start over. For a Time Capsule open Airport Utility, click on the Manual Update button.
Select Airport Utility Help from the Help menu and search for "erase." This will get you the help file on how to erase a
    TC drive.

  • Should Time Capsule be visible in Disk Utility

I don't see Time Capsule as a HD drive in Disk Utility. I also can't see it using Data REscue II. It there something wrong with the Time capsule ? How do you restore repair or recover data from the time capsule?

Each of the backups on the Time Capsule is a sparsebundle. You can see the sparsebundle(s) by clicking on Time Capsule under Shared in a Finder window, then after a moment or two you can double click on the Time Capsule folder. To attempt to repair a backup, do the following. Bear in mind that the Repair function could take a few hours. I prefer to run it overnight so I don't stress about it. There's nothing like reviewing Repair messages over steaming hot cup o' java.
    - Turn off Time Machine on the Mac that backs up to the sparsebundle in question. (The Mac's name is in the sparsebundle's name).
    - Double click on the sparsebundle.
    - Once the "Opening" dialog appears, click "Skip" to skip the check.
    - You have now mounted the virtual backup drive stored in the sparsebundle -- it shows up under your list of Devices in the Finder window.
    - Open Disk Utility
    - Select "Backup of [machine name]" in the left pane
    - Select the First Aid tab if it's not already selected
    - Click on Repair disk
    - Give it a few hours.
Sometimes, if the sparsebundle can't be repaired, the solution is to delete the sparsebundle and start over. Perhaps Data Rescue works on a mounted sparsebundle -- I'm not sure.
It's unlikely you need to repair the Time Capsule's drive itself, as it usually has very few files on it (just the sparsebundles), and it's disk directory is rarely updated.

  • Resize Time Machine sparsebundle size in Disk Utility

I have two MacBooks backing up to a 500GB Time Capsule. Each has a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule that seem to have maximum sizes of the entire disk.
Can I resize each sparsebundle in Disk Utility to something smaller, say 100GB, by simply dragging the partition size down?
If I create a third sparsebundle and mount it can I then use it to store miscellaneous files, basically acting as a NAS drive.
I have seen many topics that discuss ways to limit the size of a Time Machine archive, but I don't think that this one hasn't been presented.
    Thanks.

You've got other problems in addition to the Erase being grayed out.
The menu icons at the top are not right either. The Info, Burn and Eject menu items should be active also.
I'd suggest quitting Disk Utility, reboot your system and trying again.
Post back if that doesn't fix it.
    regards

  • Time Capsule "sparsebundle" error

Whenever my Time Capsule tries to back up via Time Machine I am getting the following error:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Michael Rowe's Time Capsule-2/Michael Rowe’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Any ideas why and how I might fix this issue?

This is the most common error since Mountain Lion.. TM backup has not correctly unmounted the backup the last time it finished .. you need to force the unmount..
ie Reboot the TC is the usual way. Sometimes a whole network reboot was in order.. restart in proper order too.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap.
But the older utility has a disconnect all users. Left out of the useless toy utility that is v6.

  • Why isn't Time Capsule showing up in Disk Utility?

I'm trying to move a Time Machine backup from an external HD to a .5TB Time Capsule [2008]. I've researched and researched and tried it all.
First, I tried dragging the backups.backupdb to the Time Machine folder as advised in several places. Got the error message "The volume is the wrong format for a backup" altho' I reset the TC to defaults before starting.
Then I tried to do a restore from the external HD holding my Time Machine backups to the TC but the TC isn't showing up as a disk in the left column of disk utility....so I can't select it as a destination drive.
The TC is connected and functioning properly. I started a TM backup on it to see if it was working and it is. I just want all my TM history to migrate to the TC without having to start from scratch.
Also, the TM backups on the external HD are in plain English...all files and folders are readable. The backup I started on the TC is a .sparsebundle and just a single image.
Please advise. I need to send the external HD back to manufacturer as it is making horrific noises.
    HELP! [and thanks]

  • Time Capsule Not Seen By Disk Utility, Not On Desktop

My 1T TC works like a champ and backs up as expected. Can TC be used as an ordinary external HD in addition to being the location of TM back ups. The TC does not appear on my desktop and is not discovered by Disk Utility.

    Rocky,
Be very careful with the xxxxxx.sparsebundle file. That is an image of all of your Time Machine backups. Leave it alone unless you want to delete all of your backups.
If you do want to delete your Time Machine backups, use the gear icon just above the xxxxx.sparsebundle file. Click the .sparsebundle file to highlight it and select Move to Trash. This is only safe way to do this.
There is also an alternate way to delete your backups and wipe the Time Capsule clean if that is what you want to do. Open AirPort Utility, select Manual Setup, click on the Disks icon, then click on the Disks tab just below that and select Erase. This is probably the better option if you want to start over with a clean disk.
Now, if you want to create a folder or folders on the Time Capsule to move files into, use that same gear shaped icon in the preceding paragraph and select New Folder. Once you see the folder, you can rename it as needed. Create more folders in the same way. You can drag files into the folder from the desktop.
I haven't tried any kind of automated backups into the folders and don't know if this might be possible.
If you add folders and keep your Time Machine backups, Time Machine will leave the folders alone even if the TC is full and deleting old backups to make room for new Time Machine backups.
Hope this helps. Just be careful and you will be fine.

  • Help! Time Capsule set up help: Airport Utility not cooperating

    Hi Everyone,
I'm desperate for help with this issue. I have a Time Capsule, Base Station and Airport Express (all previous generation)at different points throughout the house. At first the issue was with the base station that refused to find my network so I called the helpdesk and got it fixed and all was well until the next day when the Time Capsule and Airport Express began to malfunction.
While everything connected to the network fine, our iphones couldn't find the network while downstairs. I tried to fix the issue but then I realized that while the base station wireless mode said 'extend network' the time capsule and airport express wireless mode said 'join network.'
I believed I overdid it on hitting the time capsule's reset button for a soft reset one too many times and now the slow flicker amber light will not steady itself or move to green and the computer is unable to successfully attach itself to our network. I've tried to restore the factory default settings but this only results in an error message 'there was an error trying to detect apple wireless devices, make sure network connection is valid and try again.'
All computers and phones have been updated with current firmwares etc. At this point, I'm stressed because I rely heavily on the internet for school and research and I don't know what else to do. Should I do a hard reset or just contact apple support?
    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Please identify the "Base Station". Do you mean an AirPort Extreme Base Station? Are all those 802.11n-capable devices?
the base station wireless mode said 'extend network' the time capsule and airport express wireless mode said 'join network.'
That suggests to me that none of those devices is your "primary" router. If that's the case, what is the brand and model of the device that's connected to your Internet feed or Internet modem?
I believed I overdid it on hitting the time capsule's reset button for a soft reset one too many times and now the slow flicker amber light will not steady itself or move to green and the computer is unable to successfully attach itself to our network.
What does AirPort Utility say about the status of the Time Capsule? (If you have trouble connecting to the Time Capsule with AirPort Utility, try plugging an Ethernet cable from a LAN port of the Time Capsule to the Ethernet port of your MacBook Pro.)
I've tried to restore the factory default settings but this only results in an error message 'there was an error trying to detect apple wireless devices, make sure network connection is valid and try again.'
Did you do that reset by holding in the reset button until the status light flashed rapidly several times? Normally after a reset, you have to select the network for that device (usually named in the form "Apple Network xxxxxx") for AirPort Utility to "see" it. That's why an Ethernet cable can be useful.

  • Loaded Mountain Lion and time capsule no longer works, airport utility can't be configured, back ups have stopped, sparse bundle in use errors occur, what a mess!!!!

Should Airport Utility now be defunct for my time capsule because I have upgraded OS to Mountain Lion? I have tried every fix I can think of but AU will not set up. I'm also getting repeated time machine back up failures and now I have a new "sparsebundleinuse" error which is totally useless to me, I have no idea what a sparse bundle is, I have no idea what it's suddenly being used by and there's no information to say what to do about it. Apple is killing me here!!!

I've tried to but on the install for Airport Utility 6, after the download I get through the introduction then the license then I get "airport utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported" and that's it, no more options!?
