Time Capsule started randomly blocking sites

Earlier this week, in the middle of a browsing session on a discussion forum i'm on, i lost access to the site. I assumed it was a server crash or connection issue to the server, but a traceroute showed otherwise. I've also been able to access the site by using a proxy server, or by connecting using my iPhone with the WiFi turned off.
My next assumption was that my ISP waqs blocking it for some reason. I was on hold with them, and had just connected my MacBook Pro directly to the cable modem, and lo and behold, the site came up no problem. That immediately suggested that it was in fact the Time Capsule that was the issue.
Further research here suggested that this happens on AirPort and Time Capsule devices from time to time, and is most often remedied with a firmware update. However, my Time Capsule was already running the most recent version of the firmware (v7.6.3).
I have tried:
Restarting the Time Capsule
Restoring to factory defaults
Downgrading the firmware to 7.6.1 and then to 7.5.2
... all to no avail.
Is there anything else i can try, or do i have to sit tight until Apple issues yet another firmware update to resolve these issues? I'd really like to get back to using some of my favourite sites without having to use up my wireless data or run everything through a proxy server.

We are seeing a number of complaints like this.
The other site Bob referenced they talk about clearing the arp cache.. you should also clear the browser cache. It is surprising how often browser cache does cause issues.. I think you should do those things as matter of course but I doubt that is where the problem is.
Try turning off ipv6 in the computer. You cannot actually turn it off in the TC.. or none that I can see.. as IPv6 does start to creep its way into the net we are going to face lots of issues in the change over.
No fix with the above, I recommend you simply get another router for the meantime.. a cheap Netgear like the WNDR3800, has reasonable firmware itself plus runs several excellent 3rd party firmware. Bridge the TC and you can continue to use it as wireless and TM backup alongside the Netgear.. but Apple need to do some investigation of the problem so report it to them via the feedback.
BTW does the same thing happen on another computer.. particularly a PC if you happen to have one.. since you tried former firmware which were ok, maybe there is an OS upgrade recently that is causing it.. nice to check on a pc. Or en if your Mac is older and still has a CD drive you could boot linux live CD ?? I am not sure if that is poosible but I imagine you should be able to do it.. anything just to see if it is common across OS. Then the finger is definitely pointed at the TC.. although running previous firmware, makes no sense to me at all.

Magic Mouse extremely sluggish when Time Capsule starts

Why is my Magic Mouse becoming extremely sluggish when Time Capsule is backing up my data? This is really frustrating, I even stopped backing up my computer because the mouse is becoming almost impossible to use as soon as Time Capsule starts...
I've heard stories of interferences between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, can anyone confirm that and provide me with a way to solve the problem? Thanks in advance.

I set the 5GHz channel to 48 and the 2.4GHz to 1. Of course I changed these settings completely randomly since I don't know anything about these things but it actually seems to work pretty fine! No more sluggish mouse during Time Capsule back ups!

My time Capsule Starts from scratch every time it is interrupted!

First I tried doing the initial backup wirelessly. After 48 hours I had 30 GB of my 54 GB. Then we had a power outage. When the power came back, I clicked on ´backup now`, but it started from scratch. So I interrupted it and set up TC through Ethernet. I had gotten up to 16 GB when I went to bed. The next morning, a message said the connection had been lost. I fiddled with the wires, and then the backup started AGAIN from scratch. I am now in my fourth backup and it is always starting from zero. The thing is, the size of the Time Capsule keeps getting smaller, (only 383 of 461 GB available) evidence of the fact that the backups ARE IN THERE- just time machine does not seem to recognize them.

Experienced the same issue with an Apple Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation, warranty replacement) connected to iMac (Late 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. This Time Capsule was configured solely as the Time Machine backup drive, no Wi-Fi (Wireless Mode: Off). The hard drive would spin up every minute or so for no apparent reason. Tried disconnecting/reconnecting Time Capsule, power off reboot of both Time Capsule and iMac to no avail. Only solution that worked was to downgrade firmware to 7.5.2 using latest Snow Leopard AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
For those that need to know how to do this, run AirPort Utility application in /Application/Utilities folder, click Manual Setup, and click on the word Version in the list, in the dialog box select 7.5.2 from drop-down menu, click OK, and click Update and allow Time Capsule to restart.

Time capsule shutsdown randomly

Once a week or three times a day my time capsule randomly shuts down. It is placed in a well vented area.

Unfortunately, this is a signal that indicates that the internal power supply on the Time Capsule is on the verge of failing.
If you value the data on the Time Capsule drive, you should connect another USB drive to the port on the Time Capsule and use the Archive function in AirPort Utility to copy the Time Capsule data as soon as possible.
If the Time Capsule is still in warranty, or if you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs....and the Time Capsule is less than three years old.....it might be covered.
Contact an Apple Store.....if you have one near you.....or get in touch with Apple Support for further action.

Time Machine & Time Capsule -- Starting over?

Hi, my Time Machine lost its connection to Time Capsule in the middle of the initial backup. So now I have an incomplete backup file and I would like to set up Time Machine again, get rid of the incomplete backup file, and start over. Is there any way to do this?
Just as a note, it is not resuming from the stopped point automatically. It's as if it did finish the backup.

My Working Solution: 1 Time Capsule + 2 AEBs on One Network

Over the past two weeks, I have probably spent 10+ hours messing around with one Time Capsule and 2 AEBs in an attempt to create a single roaming network. I tried everything and I searched for hours on the forums for solutions. Thanks to many others for posting tid bits here and there, I was at least able to try things I hadn't tried before. In the end, I never found a perfect answer and I even spent time on the phone with Apple. Finally, after coming close to throwing every one of these devices at the wall, I took at step back and waited a few days and came up with a solution that works perfectly for me - as of today, it's been three days without any glitch. Keep in mind though that I have the luxury of having a wired house and I have the option of running ethernet cable from one device to the other as my mechanism for "extending" the network. What I needed was the ability to walk around the house freely with wireless devices such as our iPhone, MacBook Air and my work laptop...
What I don't know is whether or not the approach I took has performance issues or if it's supported by Apple or if I am in for a sudden surprise so take my solution for what it's worth... Here is what I did...
*General Advice for Clearing out AEB/TC Settings*
- Power device on - wait till it goes through a solid and then a slow blinking amber light
- Once the device has powered up, do a hard reset (new models - push reset for 5 seconds until it blinks rapidly
- Wait until the full power up cycle completes - slow blinking amber light
- Unplug the device, wait a few seconds and plug back in, waiting until full cycle
I can not stress how important above is - just doing a hard reset will NOT clear out all your settings and you will be left with random crap that could impact your setup. This was one of the key pieces I was missing and a great apple tech helped me out
Also - start simple... no printer hookup, no extra network devices, just one computer, one TC/AEB and the internet. Add on from there. Based on this, I setup things as follows
1. Time Capsule - verified internet, etc
2. AEB #1 - again verified internet, etc.
3. AEB #2
Finally, the latest TC/AEB updates provided by Apple did appear to help - not sure exactly how but the process of setting up my 2nd AEB was easier and I ran into many less issues...
*Internet Solution:*
- Comcast Cable Modem
- Hooked up directly to the WAN port of my Time Capsule
- DHCP based solution, per Comcast setup
*Time Capsule*
- Version 7.3.1
- Acts as my main Hub, DNS Server and Router
- Name: used three words all separated with - (no spaces). Ex: my-time-capsule
- Wireless Mode
-- Create a wireless Network
-- Network Name: Z-Autobahn
-- Yes to Allow network to be extended
-- 802.11n only (5 GHZ)
-- Security WPA2 Personal
-- Under Options: Changed Multicast to 24Mbps
- Internet
-- Used Ethernet, DHCP as Comcast requires
-- Connection Sharing: Share a public IP Address
- DHCP
-- Leveraged default network / submasks 10.0.1.1 as my router, dishing out 10.0.1.2 and beyond

Here is the key difference - I did NOT use WDS or the Extend Network option. I had problem after problem with these options and although I can not confirm, I believe both of these leverage wireless to extend your range vs. ethernet. I also believe this is the reason folks say to NOT use the WAN port with this type of configuration
Base Station
- Named similar to TC: my-aeb-mb (where mb was a location identifier)
- WAN port is hooked up directly to one of the LAN ports of my Time Capsule
- Wireless Mode
-- Create a wireless Network (NOT WDS or Extend)
-- Network Name: Z-Autobahn (same as TC settings)
-- Yes to Allow network to be extended
-- 802.11n only (5 GHZ)
-- Security WPA2 Personal (exact same security setup and password)

I followed the exact same process as AEB #1 with the exception of the following 2 settings
- Name: my-aeb-lr
- IP Address: 10.0.1.3 (matches what I reserved from DHCP settings of time capsule)
*Other Random Thoughts*
Prior to setting up above, I experienced a ton of issues - network would drop, an AEB would disappear, random instability, you name it. Above setup has worked well for a few days now.
I also have a bit of a more complex setup - there is actually a full switch running in between the TC and the AEBs but this should be irrelevant. I just happen to have a full wired house. I am sure someone will ask my the **** I even borrowed with above - the answer is simple. Ports are great when you know exactly where your computer or network device is going to be BEFORE your house is built.
All my machines (with the exception of my work laptop) are setup with a WINS workgroup called "workgroup" so that I can share between my macs and my pcs. You don't need to mess with this if you are all mac.
*Quick Note on Windows XP*
By default, Windows XP does NOT support WPA2 which means you can't use a true 802.11n solution at 5ghz. You can download a hot fix for SP2 from Microsoft. The KB article is: 893357 and can be downloaded from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357. This is NOT an issue with Windows Vista.
Finally - I am not a network expert but I work in the SW industry. I would love to get thoughts from someone that is really experienced in networking to help me understand if I did something that is screwed up. Things seem to work for me.

I realized I only used the abbreviation AEB vs. Airport Extreme. Caught this after the 15 minute edit restriction. Added in case folks are searching by Airport Extreme. In addition, the solution I setup is a Roaming Network solution vs. "one network". Enjoy!

Why is time capsule shutting off?

I've only encountered one major issue since installing Lion on my iMac. Time Capsule actually shuts down by itself intermittently. Anyone else having this issue?

My 3 year old Time Capsule was intermittently shutting down recently. Until today when it shut down and would not restart. It would begin the startup procedure through the yellow light sequence, then as soon as it hit the green light it would shut down.
Checking around online I learned that Apple isn't supporting these very well and I was about to just move on. But instead I just decided to check out the hard drive. I took it out and plugged it into my iMac to run disk utility on it, but it would not show up in the finder... a dead hard drive. I bought and installed a new WD Caviar Green hard drive and amazingly, the Time Capsule started up with all my settings intact. A few minutes of formatting the hard drive and it is working like new. I have had it backing up for the last several hours.
Is this a result of Lion OSx or coincidence? I highly doubt Lion corrupts the hard drives of the TC, but it is coincidental. It could be that the hard drive (almost 3 yrs old) was on its way to demise and by installing Lion (which required some heavy TC usage through a data migration and subsequent full backup) pushed it over the edge.
Bottom line, you may try a new hard drive. A 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green is going for about $60 at Micro Center or on Amazon. It is pretty straightforward to replace (once you get past the removal of the rubber bottom) and a $60 replacement is much better than a new $300 Time Capsule.

Time Capsule has high pitch noise

I guess these things are notorious for their internal power supply failing. My time capsule started making a high pitch noise yesterday. Is this a sign of the power supply failing? Any idea of how much it would cost to repair? I have no applecare.

Unfortunately, a high pitched squeal is almost always a sign of a power supply capacitor that is failing. Suggest you contact Apple to get the name of a nearby authorized Apple repair shop.

Can't get Time Capsule to access internet through 2wire router / modem with AT

I have internet service provided by AT&T Uverse. AT&T provides a 2 wire combination modem / router. My Time Capsule will connect to my internal network but will not connect to the internet. I have a steady green indicator light on the Time Capsule. Can anyone offer any assistance?

Time Capsule & AT&T 2Wire Gateway Model: 3800HGV-B
Instructions on connecting your Time Capsule to an AT&T 2Wire Modem Model: 3800HGV-B. I do know if these instructions will work for other models. Some 2Wire models require it to be set in “Bridge-Mode” or a “Router-Behind-Router”. The 3800HGV-B model does not have the ability to be put into “Bridge-Mode”. After hours of frustrating tech support calls, mine is finally working, so I thought I would share what worked for me. Why something like this isn’t already posted, I have no idea? Although I may not have all the terms correct, I think I can explain it in a way to help others the way I wish someone could have helped me. Something this simple, shouldn’t be so hard.
The Situation
Those with AT&T U-verse are unable to connect their Time Capsule to Network.
The Problem
Apple & AT&T’s Tech Support have failed to provide solutions.
The Solution
To configure the AT&T 2Wire with the Time Capsule the 2Wire must have its router disabled, in addition to disabling both the 2Wire and Time Capsule Firewalls. The goal is to get these two device to play well with each other. The challenge is that the 2Wire Modem is both a router and a modem. The Time Capsule is also a router, so they compete with each other, thus creating the headache many of us have experienced.
Step One: Create a wireless network.
Connect your DSL or cable modem to the Ethernet WAN port on your Time Capsule.
Open Airport Utility, select Time Capsule, and click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions to create your new network.
Once you have finished the above steps, make sure your screens look similar to mine. Once you have the Time Capsule set up according to the directions, you still won’t have internet connection. Be sure there is a “checkmark” next to your new newly created Network.
The Situation
This above process should have set the Time Capsule in a DHCP mode, thus making it ready to receive the signal/ IP address sent by the 2Wire.
Step Two: Allow DMZplus mode
    Open your web browser and enter the address http://192.168.1.254/ This will take you to the 2Wire settings. Select Settings, click Applications, Pinholes, and DMZ. At the bottom of the page, select Allow all applications (DMZplus mode). Click Save.
Note: Once DMZplus mode is selected and you click save, the system will issue a new IP address to the selected computer. The computer must be set to DHCP mode to receive the new IP address from the system, and you must reboot the computer. If you are changing DMZplus mode from one computer to another computer, you must reboot both computers.
The 2Wire Wireless Setting must be disabled. You don’t want the 2Wire to broadcast its wireless signal. You must shut off the “Router” abilities of 2Wire. In the U-verse 2Wire Settings, select the Firewall tab, click Applications, Pinholes and DMZ. At the bottom of the page select the radio button which Allows all applications (DMZplus mode).
You will know when you are successful at shutting the wireless down by selecting the Airport Signal in the upper right of your screen. If you see a network called 2Wirexxx, then your 2Wire is still broadcasting its signal.
The Time Capsule is setup in the DHCP mode, but isn’t able to get the IP Address because there are 2 Firewalls to address. There is the firewall of the 2Wire and one for the Time Capsule.
Step Three: Disable the Firewall.
    One thing all the other tech’s missed, was unchecking the “Enable default host at”. Your screen should look like the below screen shot, because this disables the other Firewall that is giving you trouble. Be sure and Update after you make your changes.
    Once the changes are complete, turn the Airport off. Shut down your computer. Unplug the 2Wire and the Time Capsule and let them sit for 5 min. Next, plug the 2Wire up first and let it begin its reboot process. Then, plug in the Time Capsule and let it start to reboot. Finally, turn on your computer and open Airport Utility.
   Finally, after a complete reboot of the system, try to connect the internet. You should now be capable of opening your system and enjoying your online experience.

Time Capsule Loses Connection Can't Back Up

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with Lion, and a 6 Month old Time Capsule.
I just set up my time capsule to extend to the wirless network in my new house. Everything is working perfectly fine untill about halfway thorugh the back up and I get an error that says "Time Capsule was connected to your network but isnt anymore" sometimes if finds it again and if not I do a soft reset, Re-join my network and start all over with the back up... only to "loose connection" even though my internet is at full bars and the time capsule and computer are sitting right next to one antoher.
Any ideas?

Extend wireless is never as solid as single hop wireless.
What wireless router are you extending?
Can you swap so the TC is the main router?
If you are sitting next to the TC.. plug in ethernet.. that is the one and only reliable method.
But you might still need to set fixed IP addresses.

TIme capsule replaces Airport Express - method for success

I just got a 1TB timecapsule to replace an airport-express as our home wireless internet router - as well as keeping data backed up.
a couple of questions for those who may have successfully done this:
what is the best process to swap out airport express function with Time Capsule?
- (the apple manual assumes too many things go well and provides little detail on actual steps).
- if both devices are on to copy info from AP Express to Time Capsule, I end up with an IP conflict (each wanting to be 10.0.1.1) and I only see one at a time -- one on my home network, the other on the Time Capsule's default MAC-id based network.
- also, the Time Capsule tells me that I should update the firmware. except, since it's not hooked to the internet yet (not configured) it can't actually complete this step....how's that supposed to work?

I never had very good luck with saving configurations and re-importing on my current Airport menagerie -- so I hadn't gone this route (also figured the two things would be incompatible).
However, I did just as you suggested and the Time Capsule imported the Express configuration readily, and aside from having to change a couple of security settings, rebooted fine.
For some reason, then the Time Capsule started working just like the Air Port Express. But, when I changed the name of the TC from Express back to something 'Time Capsule' and restarted - it was back to the old unresponsive way it was.
- so I went through this re-importing exercise several times.
When things finally stabilized, I noticed that the TC had some ups and downs with my ISP in getting an IP assigned. THis could have been from the ISP acting up the last week or so...or maybe the software?
But in the end - Time Capsule is up running and backing me up wirelessly.
Next trick is to add the Airport Express back into the network so we can stream some iTunes.

Oh - I guess this might also be of note - I hardwired the TC up to the iMac so I could continue the Time Machine back ups while I figured out the networking issues -- and it went ahead and updated it's firmware. Not sure if that helped or hindered so far - but it's running 7.4.2 now and I'm writing this reply via the TC.

Hi Bob,
Just go back to this issue. Maybe I have not explained my config correctly.
I have Speedtouch router for Internet access connected to a soho switch with 8 ethernet connections on the ground floor. To this switch there are wired 7 Microsoft devices including PCs on both the ground and first floor) and an airport express Wi-fi hot spot (first floor) . My Macbook is wirelessly connected to the AE for Internet access . An HP printer is also connected to the AE.
I would now like to set up the TC as a wifi back up disk for the Macbook using Time machine.
Should I a) replace the AE with the TC or b) can I set TC up seperately ?
If a) can I use the same network Id and password for TC as I had for the AE or do I need to use new ID and password for it?
If b) is there a risk of interference between the TC and AE ?
Probably a) is the best solution as I dont really need the AE if The tC will give me greater functionality but I would like your confirmation of this

Time capsule 1st generation loosing Internet connection

I have a time capsule 1st generation on my iMac. Since I updated to Lion, my time capsule started to flash orange every hour or so… it's extremely annoying and I really have NO idea what to do.
Here's some specs and configuration for my network
Firmware: 7.5.2 (75200.14)
Wireless Security: WAP2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended CHECKED
Channel: Automatic
Radio Mode: 802.11n only (2.4GHz) - I tried on 5GHz only and I had the same problem.
Multicast Rate: 6Mbps
WPA Group Key Timeout: 1 hour - I tried 1 day, 10 days, X months, doesn't matter, problem still here
Create a closed network - UNCHECKED - Because the mac mini keeps on "forgetting" the network and it ***** to remember such a long password so I decided not to hide it anymore
Since the time capsule is pretty close to my computer, I use an ethernet cable but everything else in the house is Wireless (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Mac Mini, apple tv, Macbook Pro and Macbook)

I found out that if you are already in airport when the problem starts, it doesn't update the message but the light gets amber and you loose connection for more or less 15 seconds.
I got this issue again this morning, opened up airport and got 2 messages... then it went back online as if nothing happened. It's doing this every single hour.
Since I can't plugg on wifi only since I ALSO get the "No Hardware Installed" message in wifi, I have to be plug with the ethernet cable
Am I the only one starting to REALLY hate Lion or what? None of this was happening on Snow Leopard...

Airport Utility cannot find time capsule after new network

I created a new wireless network from my wireless router and then my time capsule started blinking yellow and airport utility can no longer find it. What can I do to fix this?

If you can connect temporarily to your Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, AirPort Utility can probably see it and explain the problem.
