Time capsule sudden death

My time capsule suddenly died. The green light just went out and everything quit. When I unplug and plug it back in the yellow light comes on and after a few seconds just goes out..... any quick fixes or am I screwed?

Gen 1 and Gen 2 have reached the End of Life.. EOL..
They require a replacement power supply which apple does not provide. But other people can.

  • My time capsule suddenly stopped recognizing my computers.

My time capsule suddenly stopped recognizing both my mac book and my mac pro. It used to work fine and now every time I log into a computer I can't back up (and the time capsule has a green light). I have tried resetting time capsule but no success (maybe I am doing it wrong. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

So I have had the same problem, try this fix for Airport Extreme/Time Capsule .
Airport Utility > Select the Extreme/Time Capsule in question > Disks > Disconnect All Users
Reboot the Extreme/Time Capsule in question > once back online > goto Finder > Shared > Reconnect Drive
    > Open Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk > Use Backup disk > Backup Now
    Good Luck

  • Time Capsule pre-death symptoms??

If your time capsule died, did your wireless signal become intermittently weaker or drop completely intermittently as a symptom prior to it's death? I am wonder if this is a tell tale symptom of impending problems.
My time capsule has recently begun having those symptoms. When this happens, there is an additional client (wireless signal) that shows up on the statistics graph in the Airport Utility that is not a wireless devise... it is interference. It's signal is much stronger than my MacBookPro from 4 feet away and the signal is perfectly flat (all of my other signals waver a bit).
The overwhelming signal strength tells me the source is located VERY close to the Time Capsule... like from within the Time Capsule unit itself !?!? We also now know that bad capacitors are the cause of the dying Time Capsule problem. My Ham Radio background tells me that bad capacitors can give off RF (radio frequency). Hmmm, does my Time Capsule have one foot in the grave?
Please post if you had these symptoms to see if there is a pattern.

Sorry, I did not think to check the wireless. My trouble started suddenly, late evening the power light flashed yellow, Airport said it was over temp, and the hard drive was spinning all the time and would not go to stand-by. TC was reset and even with aggressive cooling kept going from green to yellow light. Went to bed with a green light and by dawn the TC was dead and would not re-start or spin up at all. When plugged in, it went to yellow light for a few seconds then went dark and off.

  • My Time Capsule suddenly slowed my wi-fi network speed. Any clue?

Don’t bother with my strange printer name login. I did something wrong in the past and I am not able to change it. Anyway, my problem seems to be more common than I thought. My wi-fi network suddenly lost speed. Directly connected to the cable modem I get full dow/uoload speeds but through Time Capsule I only get 20x lower download speed (strange but uoload is less affected).
Tried almost everything already: soft and hard resets, channel changes, firmware updates and nothing changes.  I talked to the Apple support here in Brazil and seem to be lost on the problem. Any final solution for an apparently quite common problem? I am already considering to buy a new router…
    Thx,
    ECastro

Do yet another factory reset.. sorry!! But we need to start from a known baseline.
And tell us what version your TC is?? A1xxx from the rubber foot.
Setup wireless to meet SMB rules.. Wireless name is short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Set a different name for 5ghz. Same rules.
Set TC name also to the rules.
So you have for example.. TC named TC
    2.4gz named TC24ghz
    5ghz named TC5ghz
Use WPA2 Personal secuirity with password that is 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
Update and put the TC back into the network in either bridge or router mode.. those are the only suitable modes.. and TC has to be set to create a wireless network.
Now connect a laptop to the 5ghz wireless signal from the same room as the TC and measure your speed.
Test again over ethernet if the wireless is slow.. if both are slow the TC is faulty or simply doesn't work correctly on your kind of broadband. This is now happening with fibre connections.. Apple have not updated the routing part of the firmware for ages.. and are ignoring the issue. Get a different brand router and bridge the TC for TM use only.

  • TIme Capsule suddenly not found

Time Capsule has been backing up without problem and now suddenly I am getting a message saying the back up disc cannot be found in Time Machine.
The Time Capsule's light is steady green but the Airport Utility cannot find it.
I am running SL on an iMac - TC is connected wirelessly.
I have not altered or tweaked anything - what should I do?
Hah! I just tried again and it has re-appeared in Airport Utility and is now backing up.
So my question is, why did this happen?

    Sure is a strange one..
Firstly just to confirm TC2 is plugged into TC1 by ethernet and bridged?
How are you trying to access TC2?? is it wireless.. or ethernet? If both are running at once turn one off.
How is the wireless setup if you use wireless?
Since PC need SMB access.. and the Mac is using AFP access.. sometimes strange things happen in that files are identical but different. Mac uses resource forks and other weird stuff.. linked to the file and when you try and open it on a pc it does strange stuff.
Make sure the TC is setup PC/SMB compatible.. ie all names are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That includes the TC name, Hard disk name and wireless names.
Setup workgroup correctly .. ie WORKGROUP generally.
Set user access correctly.. I turn on the guest account to read and write access.
If you don't have bonjour for windows loaded make sure it is.. or the full airport utility.
I recommend you create a directory from windows..
From the Mac, open one of your projects in Lightroom and export.. save as the file to the new directory in TC2 created from windows. I don't use Lightroom so I am not sure what options are available.. but I would try and use some compatible format if the main format fails to open.
Then try and open it again from windows.

  • Time Capsule suddenly producing very slow internet connection

I use my TC as a router and back-up.  The internet connection is suddenly very slow and unable to load some more complex web pages.  I plugged the cable modem directly into my MacBook Pro and the connection is fine, so I do not believe it is our signal from the internet provider.  Yesterday I was unable to locate my TC back-up files on my computer, but today I could.

    thomsenbrønshøj wrote:
Same scenario. firmware 7.7.3. Drops from 8Mbit direct to 0,2Mbit through the Time Capsule (latest version 2TB).
Have a try naming the two wireless bands differently.
ie TC24ghz and TC5ghz .. then force the Sonos to use 2.4ghz and force the computer to use 5ghz.. do you get any improvement??
If not the TC could be faulty on the wan side.. to test you need to do actual file transfer tests between the client and the TC.. copy a large file to the and from the TC hard disk.. it should go at up to 50MB/s over ethernet and around 10-15MB/s over wireless.
The WAN issue with some modems is difficult to track down.. if the TC is new return it.. or still in warranty at least get apple to test it.

  • Time Capsule Suddenly Not Finding PPPoE

I have AT&T DSL service with a Westell modem.  I used my Time Capsule to create a wireless network and have been able to wirelessly access the internet with my MacBook Pro for the entire 4 months that I have had the service.  However, today after installing a firmware update on the Time Capsule I suddenly lost wireless internet service.  When I turn on Airport it says "Searching for PPPoE host..." over and over again, but never connects.  I have restarted the modem.  I have restarted the Time Capsule.  All to no avail.  The modem is set up with PPP on the modem and I haven't had any problems.  When I connect the MacBook directly to the modem, I can access the internet so the source of the problem must be the Time Capsule.
    Any suggestions?

If you can connect the modem direct to the macbook and have internet.. are you running ppp on the modem.. you say you are.. if so the modem is no longer bridged.. and pppoe on the TC cannot work because the account is already autheticated on the modem.  If the modem works well then just bridge the TC.. that is equally good way to run things, and is easy to setup.. just go to airport utility, on internet page select ethernet not pppoe, and down the bottom pick connection sharing bridged.

  • 2TB Time Capsule suddenly full after only a few months?

    Hello all,
Apologies in advance if this is a question that's already been answered.  I've been searching through threads, but didn't seem to see it.
I have a late 2009 iMac (27 inch, 2.8 GHz i7, 4GB Ram) that had a hard drive affected by the Seagate Recall.  About the same time I was alerted to this, the Firewire drive I'd been using for timemachine backups reached it's capacity.  I figured it was time to get a bigger backup drive and went out and bought a 2TB Time Capsule.  This was on November 5th of 2012.
After making a bootabe clone of hard drive (just as a 2nd backup) I set up my time capsule.  I did the first backup via ethernet, and then, per posts that I found on the forum,( I set it up so that it was connected to my existing wireless router via ethernet, and let my iMac back up to it wirelessly over the home network.  Once or twice, when I've changed large amounts of data, I've reconnected the iMac to the timecapusle via the ethernet cable and let it backup that way.  But overall, the backups have happened over the air.  My home user folder is aprox 632 GBs.
I also had tried to set up my macbook (Intel, late 2006) to back up to the same timecapsule, but was having issues and ended up just turning time machine off since I haven't had time to trouble shoot them.  That macbook (which only has 60 gig harddrive on it) has at least one full backup on it's part of the Time Capsule, but not many more.
So basically my setup looks like this:
Cable Modem connected to Belkin Wireless Router via Ethernet
2TB TC connected to Belkin Router via Ethernet in Bridge mode.
iMac connecting to TC via the wireless network created by router. (with the exception of a few times)
Today, I was surprised that, only a couple months later, that Time Machine told me that the Time Capsule was full, and that it had deleted older backups to make room.  My earliest back up is now Dec 6th 2012.
Previously, my 1 TB firewire drive lasted several years before it started having to delete older backups.
Am I right to think this is out of the ordinary?  And if it isn't, can anyone point me in the right direction to try and figure out why this is ocurring.  I'm not really sure what the first step in trouble shooting the issue would be.
    Thanks so much in advance,
    avi

Thanks for the quick respons djcastaldo.
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a "virtual machine"... but I'm guessthing that means I'm not doing it..
I do have about 64 gigs in my dropbox folder... but the day to day changes to the files in there are fairly small (mostly updates to word processing files as I move between computers).  I don't think that would be the issue.
Would the best way to try and find the culrprit file be to just scan through my home folder and look for large files with recent "modified" dates?
    Thanks so much,
    avi

  • From Nabil Houlika Germany. Please help me by answering the following questions. The Time Capsule suddenly went dead. What should I do? Is there a way to put it "ON" again??

Yesterday the time capsule light went off. All efforts to put it on again failed. All electric connections are in good order and working perfectly. Please help me.

    Hi again,
I called them this morning. Admits my allergies and sneezing I was able to talk to them.
They will replace it with basically no questions asked.
I guess also having a MBP under AppleCare also helped too as the case is registered under that.
They gave me a few options.
The could take my credit card number as insurance and send me a new one and them I send them my dead one back, or I could take it into an Apple Store for a replacement there. The problem is that I have data on there that I want to maintain, so they said take it to the Apple Store or an Apple Service provider and they would handle the transfer.
I don't have an Apple Store in my city, but have a Service Provider that I know that could do the transfer for me, but I kinda want to do it at the Apple Store because maybe then they would give me a new one instead of another w year tombstone.
So I need to weigh my options.
I'll let you know further what happens.
P.S. my serial number was not in the range listed, but that didn't seem to make a difference. I think the key is to be courteous, respectful and friendly.

  • My 2008 Time Capsule suddenly lost power. Is this an internal issue or has it seen the end of its life?

Help!  My 1st Generation (i think) time capsule purchased Apreil 2008 quit unexpectedly yesterday and and will not power up.  after looking into some history of this it sounds like its an internal design flaw by Apple.  because of my unit's age, is there any recourse with Apple?

    Christopher Richards wrote:
I would disagree, it is at least worth a shot.  The worst they can say is no.  They replaced my 2008 time capsule just last year for free.  Apple can be very generous with warranties.
Add it up.. that is within 3years.. otherwise you can take any 10year old computer in and say it broke.. its apple's fault because it should last 20.. please replace it. They will of course laugh at you. If it was 2weeks past 3years, and you have heaps of apple computers and applecare.. then maybe they will consider it.. but don't get your hopes up. They have been very harsh with TC outside that first batch of serial numbers.. which Apple know full well was not the end of the problem. There was no difference subsequently in the design or power supply of later ones of series 1. The extended warranty was a cynical exercise in keeping law suits at bay. I know as I repair them.. more than half I repair are post extended warranty serial numbers which apple refused to countenance repair on. They are identical to earlier ones, which they do accept responsibility for.

  • Just Replaced Hard Drive and Time Capsule Suddenly Almost Full

I just replaced my 200GB hard drive (with approx. 165GB used) with a 500GB hard drive. My Time Capsule now shows about 330GB in storage...about my original 165GB x 2. So, I'm thinking that I now have my 165GB from my old hard drive in storage, and the 165GB from my new hard drive.
My question is...how do I correct this?

Was this an internal drive that was replaced? If so, my guess would be that the Time Capsule sees this as a new computer and will backup the contents of the entire drive.
Open your Hard Drive and look for the SHARED heading on the left. Click the Time Capsule icon and a Time Capsule folder will appear in the window on the right. Double click this folder.
You should now see a xxxxx.sparesbundle file for each computer that has been backing up. The sparsebundle file contains the name of your Mac and MAC address. If you see the same listing twice, you will know that the TC has made a new complete backup of your computer.
I haven't experienced your situation first hand, so I'm not clear on whether you will be able to access the "old" backups from your "new" computer. That might be the subject of a new post if that is the case.

  • New Apple Airport Time Capsule Suddenly Stopped Being Recognized by IMAC

It worked flawlessly for a little over a month or so. Then suddenly it is not recognized. It's ID has changed when I look in Time Machine, so I hesitate to reselect this "data" ID that was not what was setup in the store (and which worked flawless for 6 weeks and which now does not appear as available). In Finder, no backup drive appears at all. Just some unknown remote network volume that is not selectable and the hard drive. The TM backup drive is gone.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership. Try restarting it first.

  • The WiFi on my Time Capsule suddenly stopped working

    Hi,
Im not sure what to do, hopefully somebody out there is able to help me with this... Suddenly the Wifi stopped working from my TC. I have not changed any settings or anything...
I only use the wifi on my MacBookPro and on my iPhone 4S. I was streaming a movie this morning and everything was working fine. Then a few hours later when my computer is trying to connect to the wifi "PPPoE Connecting" scrolls next to the wifi-symbol, and nothing happens. My iPhone connects to the Wifi, but I am not able to surf the net or check my emails...
My MacBook can find the TC and all the data I have stored on it, it is only the wifi that is not working.
I have tried to switch it off and on again, but nothing helps...
I really hope that someone out there might know what happened and what I can do about it???
    /Eva

Is it the AC model.. tall one?? If not the exact model model please from the rubber mat on the bottom.. A1xxx ..please don't give us the serial number.. that is harder to work with.
Please tell us the whole network setup..
What modem you use? make and model helps..
Is the modem running also as the main router or is bridged?
Is the TC router or bridge?
You have power cycled the TC .. have you power cycled the whole network? Power on in correct order.. modem.. wait two min.. TC .. wait 2min then the clients.
No luck factory reset.. see method below.
    Redo the setup.
This time use all short names, no spaces and pure alplhanumeric.
    ie TC name = TC
    Name of 2.4ghz = TC24ghz
    Name of 5ghz = TC5ghz (please set a different name for 5ghz).
The Factory Reset TC Gen1-4. Or AE Gen1-5
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec.
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Factory reset TC Gen 5 or AE Gen 6
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort AE or TC still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AE/TC .. hold in reset and power the TC/AE back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

  • My time capsule disappear suddenly

my time capsule suddenly disappeared from the network, no green nor amber light in the front, but in the rear, the all the hardwire ports blinking a tiny little green light. it has no change even i try to restore to factory setting.
i just connect it wirelessly to my home network, no cable patched to it except the power cable. it was fine in the first few days, until it suddenly pass out

Do a full factory reset of the TC..
ie hold in reset whilst powering on.. and keep holding in reset until front LED flashes.. this will do nothing to the files.
It is easier to setup with ethernet.. sorry.. you don't have one on the air.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet fairly cheap. Or use another computer.
Use all SMB names.. that is, short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    eg
    TC name TC
wireless name TC24ghz and TC5ghz (use different name for 5ghz to force it to stay still).
    Hard drive name.. data
Use only WPA2 Personal wireless security..
Set to 5ghz if possible and you are close as it is much faster.

  • HP Photosmart C4480 through Time Capsule

I have a Vista machine and my wife has a Macbook Pro she just got. We both wanted to share a wireless printer so the guy at the apple store suggested we get the Time Capsule and the HP Photosmart (actually we got the 100 off printer deal so we got that one because it had both mac and pc drivers).
We both installed our software, and were able to see the Time Capsule on the wifi. We both printed just fine off the printer and all was right with the world. Flash forward a day or so and we tried and failed to print on both machines. I had to unplug and reboot the time capsule, then we were both able to print fine.
A few days later my wife was printing off my machine and got several pages done when suddenly it stopped working, giving her a print error. When I got home we tested it from her machine and she couldn't print either. We had to reboot the time capsule again and suddenly it works fine.
I am not the most mac savvy person so I am begging for some help from more knowledgeable folks. Has anyone had issues with USB printers through the time capsule suddenly stop working and require a capsule reboot? The error seems to occure regardless of whos computer we print from and we cannot reproduce it. It just happens sparaticly.

A multifunction device connected to the Time Capsule's USB port can only be used as a printer, or external drive if applicable. No other functions will be handled by it.
