Time Capsule, Time Machine & Lion

When I installed Lion, Time Machine would get stuck on backing up (Console would report "waiting for index to be ready over and over). I erased the the existing Time Machine Back up and started over to see if that Fixed the problem. While it does back up now, it indexes everytime, is this normal. This takes a lot of time almost to the point where it is time to back up again. Console still reports waiting for index to be ready. I copied what console shows. It is backing up to a Time Capsule via wifi. Please help

You might want try deleting the index. See the pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Time Capsule slow in Lion and errors

hello --
ever since upgrading to lion i am having a lot of problems with my time capsule. it is running extremely slow, while before it was perfectly acceptable over wifi. eventually i installed the time capsule buddy widget and noticed the error below repeatedly occuring (in bold). i also noticed that all of a sudden it requires 1.89 GB to backup ( !!! ) in the last line, something that never was an issue before. have others encountered similar issues?

A: Time Capsule slow in Lion and errors

Same problem here - slow backing up to my Time Capsule. Today I had some trouble after booting my MacBook Pro. Finder got stuck and after some restarts Spotlight re-indexed and everything seems fine. And now backing up is much faster. I used to have a lot of time waiting for indexing. But I still get this error message:

Time Capsule / Time Machine very very slow

I'v been having problems with very slow backups using a Time Machine / Time Capsule combo and I've been looking around this forum and the web in order to figure out what it is, but I couldn't find any specifics relating to my situation. Both the preparation and the backing up stages are both very slow.
I hadn't used Time Machine since before Christmas as it become unreliable after updating to Yosemite but thought I'd try and get backups running again. It took about 16 hours to complete it's first backup of 17gb, then today's backup of 475.9mb took 4 hours to prepare and it's only backed up 167.7mb as I write this.
Can anyone with a good technical understanding of OS X, Time Capsule & Time Machine backups tell me what the problem is by looking at the console output below?

There is an 8 hour gap between this message and the one before it.
This message is related to the use of encryption. If you are still getting it even after you have turned encryption off then something is still hanging around. And it is a big problem.
The previous log entry that it may also be the concern is

So it is doing a full verify of the backup.. that is extremely time consuming over wireless. It takes much longer to verify than to do the backup. That is because of the long gap since the last backup. When you wait so long it is sometimes better to simply start over.
It is essential when this happens to be using ethernet with wireless turned off.
Make sure IPv6 is set correctly to link-local only in the ethernet settings of the computer.
Why your latest one is so slow is again a Yosemite bug mystery.
However I would like you to test actual network speed copying files to the TC.
Stop the present backup.. if it is still running. Then via finder simply copy a file to the TC hard disk.. a single very large file say 100-1000MB and give me a network speed using activity monitor.
Yosemite has real network issues on top of real TM issues.
Test by doing a TM backup to a USB drive plugged into the computer. If this is dramatically faster the issue is mostly network rather than TM.
If it still fails to backup in reasonable time periods.. and for people having big issues.. I recommend give up on TM until apple have managed to patch the bugs. Use an alternative like Carbon Copy Cloner.. I would do that even if TM does work if you want a backup you can trust.

External drive and time capsule/time machine

Just purchased external hard drive and moved iPhoto library and iMovie clips to external hard drive. Have been using time capsule/time machine to back up computer. Added new external hard drive to time machine backup, but backups seem to hang up when preparing files for external drive. What is going on? Still running Snow Leopard, on iMac.

If I understand correctly, you're wondering if you can use your Time Capsule's internal hard disk both for Time Machine backups and as an ordinary drive. Is this your question?
You can, but Time Machine backups may take longer.
To do it, you should partition your Time Capsule's hard disk to create one volume for the backups and one for other files.

Go to to your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in the Finder and then enter Time Machine. Go back to the last backup that has the domain file, select it and use the Restore button.

Time Capsule, Time Machine, Lion, repeater.

Need to upgrade home network for more space, longer range, upgrade to Lion. Have an existing router, Netgear, that does not reach all areas and devices. Would also like to set up a wireless backup for all computers on network. Of course we need to update OS to Lion, (I think). Any help? Can the Time Capsule be used as a repeater? Is it compatable with Time Machine?

The TC cannot act as a repeater except to another apple router. Apple chose to use a proprietary system.
If you can get a cheap express or extreme.. plug it into the main modem.. then the TC can work as repeater.. known as wireless extend in the Apple world.
Or get EOP or homeplug adapters and use those instead of ethernet.. but they are not problem free..

Time Capsule/Time Machine Help

My Time Capsule is set up to run my wireless network, and is also shown as the external drive to house my Time Machine backups. But, it appears that no Time Machine backups are making it to the Time Capsule, and are instead all saved locally. All of the Time Machine backups are listed in White/Grey (no purple datapoints to be seen). I've re-set up the Time Capsule as the drive for Time Machine backups, but nothing changes. I have to do a full backup of my hard drive tonight because my hard drive has to be replaced this weekend. Any ideas? Appreciate the help.

I would guess you are on Mountain Lion at the very least.
Are the backups over wireless?
Plug the TC directly into the computer by ethenret.. do a full reset and minimal setup.. TC should be in router mode.. This will not delete or harm the backups in any way.
Do a full reset of TM.. See A4

Then restart TM and point it again to the TC.
If a hard disk has to be replaced I would also do a disk image. Do trust just TM.
You can do a disk image from disk utilty but superduper even free download version can do it.. !!

Can't "inherit" prior Mac's Time Capsule Time Machine backup

It's getting ridiculous. Tried half-dozen times, tried Pondini's instructions, just doesn't seem to work. I never get the "Inherit the backups?" question and my new computer starts a new full backup.
Probably I've screwed up the drive by now.
It's a 2 TB Time Capsule set up as Time Machine with my old MBPro running Mountain Lion. There's lots of space used (the old backup). The new computer has it's own Mtn Lion setup and new applications and a new USER (me). I have tried using Igration Assistant to migrate the SETTINGS only, because I read that would trigger the "Inherit the Backups?" question.
It completeed the migrration successfully, but no question. When I start a new backup I do not get the question either, jsut the beginning of a 95GB backup.
Is this doable? Can someone clarify or simplify?
I want to baack up to the old set, or at least access the old backup set to recover some few files that were not transferred previously (by another non-Time Machine backup)

Using Ponderini's instructions #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, I don’t succeed in reconnecting an existing time machine backup (time capsule).
The previous TM backup was made from a macbockpro under OS 10.6.8 on a time capsule. I change to a new MBP that run on os 10.9 and I want to use my previous time capsule backups.
With my new MBP I can access to previous backup using Browse Other Backup Disks option, but I an’t succed using the B6 to keep previous backup.

When I activate TM, the Time Machine preferences do not indicate that any prior backups were available
I reboot, same problem.

Can i still use my old hard drive without time capsule in Mountain Lion OS

Hi,
I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion OS but don't want to use Time capsule for time machine backup and still like to use my existing external hard disk for time machine backup. Is this possible? At present I have OSX lion.

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

Does time capsule works with Lion?

I am new to Mac after I had an HP damaged, and decided to move on to Mac. As I do not want to repeat the experience of losing all the information for not backing it up, I was told that I could make backups with time Machine and Time Capsule. I would like to check if it is possible, and if Time Capsule will work with Lion. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. Thanks for your comments.

Yes, although you don't necessarily need a Time Capsule.
That's a combination wireless router and hard drive, and was designed specifically to receive wireless Time Machine backups, and is quite handy for that.
But you can also back up to an external HD -- much faster and more reliable (not to mention less expensive), but less convenient for laptop users, having to connect it when you want to do backups.

I can't connect to my time capsule. the machine is on but the message is the backup disk is not available.

My Mac desktop has not backed up to my time capsule since July 10th. The time capsule is on and plugged in but the message reads that the backup disk is not available. What can I do?

It helps to know what OS you are running on the Mac.. let me guess.. Mavericks.. since it is the most buggy on the network side.. although Lion and ML are also lacking the rock solid nature of Snow Leopard.
Have you done the simple things.. ??
ie reboot the TC?
No luck then reboot the network.
No luck then I would recommend a complete reset of the TC.
I have outlined how to do this many times.

As you will see this is not something unusual.
Apple has a document.. very well hidden.

It is helpful (although it doesn't go far enough IMHO).
Try what I have suggested and tell me how it goes.. more problems then also give me more info.

Time Capsule problem in Lion

Since upgrading to Lion, my time capsule back-ups seem to take forever. Not only that, but my internet apps, (Mail and Safari for example), sometimes can't log onto the internet while the back-up is in progress. Worse, I get a lot of apps that end up not responding when I try to open them during the back-up, and I have to force quit and restart the computer to sove the problem. At one point, I got a message I had to redo my back-up from time machine. Any suggestions, or anyone else having any of these problems?

Because of that Ethernet cable a low-quality Wi-Fi signal probably isn't a factor in your case. Time capsule /time machine still gets lost despite being plugged in via Wan cable

Some days it works and others it don't.... why oh why do my Imac and time capsule fail to work together despite being wired together with the LAN cable.I have tried many options of forgetting /switching out the capsule and reintroducing it again. It may work for a while then up comes the message saying that the machine cannot be found! Urrgh! My system is an early 2009 Imac with osx 10.8.2 the time capsule is a 2tb 2nd generation. %0% of my hard drive is still available. No other faults are evident. Approx 1.65 tb remain available on the time machine that has been in situ since Oct 2011. Any ideas?

Silly question possibly, but is there any real difference between time capsule and time machine?
I imagine the time machine to be the "guts" of the Time Capsule. Correct??

Don't blame you.. your experience is reflected in many many posts here.. and they multiplied when Mountain Lion came out.. which rather than fixing the still unresolved issues on Lion exacerbated them.. Apple meanwhile has used the ostrich solution.. which exposes some other parts. Or maybe waves them in your face.
We can clear up a few issues..
Time Machine is software on your computer.. it has nothing whatever to do with Time Capsule. A hardware that consists of an apple airport extreme router and a hard disk in a merged box.. with a couple of bit of ticky tacky to hold it together. It is a possible backup location for TM backups.. amongst many.
A Gen2 TC cannot be 2TB.. unless you replaced the disk.. please report the actual model number which is on the rubber foot.. A1xxx
At this point the issue is clearly a network bug. What where and why we are not sure.. nothing is a cure or work around.
There are crude methods.. a time clock electrical switch that shuts off the TC at midnight before it goes pumkin and awakens it a few min later.. or several hours.. not unheard of solution to adsl problems.. routers however should not need this treatment.
One very interesting post I have tracked.. had no problem with the TC as long as they used a USB drive plugged in.. the internal disk was the issue..
Some things help.
Mountain Lion does like the hard disk with space in the name.. but I think it is good to ensure all the names follow correct network standards.. ie short.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Is the TC in router or bridge mode?
Is the ML install clean or upgrade?
Are you using 5.6 utility
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
