Time Capsule to replace Airport Extreme

I just purchased a Time Capsule to replace an Airport Extreme 802.11. Can I just swap them out with one another as far as the router end of it goes? Or, does the Time Capsule have to be set up with its own settings using Airport Utility? Anything else I need to/should know before making the change? Thanks

You will need to swap them out, install the Airport 5.3 Utility included on the TC disk and then run Airport Utility. It will remember your old AEBS settings and transfer them over.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive?

Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive (without currently being attached to a MAC OSX LION system)?

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

  • Can I backup to a time capsule via an airport extreme.

I have a time capsule although it is at the other side of my house and i dont get great signal. I am looking at getting an airport extreme (would an airport expres to extend my signal. Will i be able to backup to my time capsule via my airport extreme.

If your Time Capsule was purchased in the last few years, chances are you have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule.
In order to extend both bands using wireless only, you would need a new AirPort Extreme, since the AirPort Express would only be able to extend one band from the Time Capsule.
If you only need to have one band extended, then an AirPort Express would likely work for your application.
Whether you choose the Extreme or Express, keep in mind that the correct location for an extending device is a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Apple's instructions to configure the "Extend" setup are here. Although an AirPort Extreme is pictured in the example, the instructions for an AirPort Express would be the same.

  • Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme

    Hi all
I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network  - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.
Is the airport extreme in bridge mode?
As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm

  • Can't Get Time Capsule to Extend Airport Extreme Wireless Network

I've searched this forum and read dozens of listings, but nothing I've found gives me a answer for the problem I'm having.
I had an existing network consisting of three Airport Extreme routers, one the master/DHCP server and the other two to extend the network. All of the routers were configured for 802.11n 5 GHz only service.
After much frustration trying to use Time Machine to back up to external disks attached to Airport Extremes as well as disks attached to other Macs, I gave up and bought a Time Capsule.
I have been trying for about six months on and off to get the Time Capsule configured as an extension to the main Airport Extreme as the other two Extremes are.
Nothing I've tried will cause the TC to extend the network. It always comes up with a yellow light and error messages saying that there is a problem with the wireless network and a problem with the internet connection and, sometimes, a third message that I don't remember.
After my initial efforts, I just gave up and plugged the danged TC into the remote AE that is closest to where I use my MacBook Pro and it worked. But I wanted it to REPLACE that AE instead of being an appendage to it.
Due to TC/TM problems, I've twice lost the entire TM backup off of the TC, and tonight I decided it was time to start over. I've encountered the same problems as before, and so finally moved the TC to my home office rack where the main AE is located and plugged it into the AE directly. TM is now backing up, but at a snail's pace (which is why I wanted the TC to be located in the same room where I use the laptop).
Has anyone had success or failure extending a multiple-unit AE network with a TC on 802.11n 5 GHz (not WDS)? If not, has your experience been similar to mine; if so, what did you do that I haven't?
Any specific help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I suppose I could do that. But if the wireless extension isn't working in one direction there's no guarantee it'll work in the other direction; and I was trying to avoid upending my entire setup.
And no, I'm not bridging the units with hard-wired cabling; I'm attempting to use wireless to extend them...NOT WDS, which is for 802.11B/G mode, but the 802.11N wireless extension mode that's available on these Apple products.

  • Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme w/ HD vs NAS

It looks like I'm having trouble with my current Time Machine drive and will need to replace it.
    I'm considering several options.
I mainly use Time Machine with a FireWire 800 drive for quick backup of my iMac. I'm pretty lax about backing up my MacBook, though--months going by before I remember to attach it to a different drive to back it up, too. So, I've been considering a network solution; the dying Time Machine drive is sort of the kick I needed to go ahead.
Obviously, a Time Capsule is a quick and easy solution to it all. However, one concern is that, as with other multipurpose devices, is that if one part dies, that pretty much kills the second part--i.e., if the hard drive fails, then I must (potentially) replace the whole unit (from what I've heard, replacing the drive in a Time Capsule isn't for the faint of heart).
Then there's an Airport Extreme; from what I understand, you can attach a USB drive to the newest models for use as a Time Machine backup:
    http://tidbits.com/e/14347
Of course, that's USB 2, which'll be on the slow side as compared to FW 800, but there's the benefit that if I need to restore, I can detach the drive from the AE and hook it up straight to the Mac, which should be quicker than a wifi restore (for the MacBook; I'd have the iMac hooked via Ethernet).
But there's the consideration that I have a FiOS router, so I don't really NEED another one; I don't think the Time Capsule or Airport really gives me much more than the FiOS router does, and I'd still need the Verizon router attached anyway for other services.
So, the last choice is an NAS drive. It might not play as well as a TM drive, as Apple did take some pains to support their own hardware... are there NAS drives that work better as Time Machine drives than others?
So, the essential question is, what would make the best Time Machine backup, if I want to back up two Macs (one by wifi)?

    Well thought out question.
    Not easy to answer.
    Some considerations..
    1. A fast wireless router is worthwhile.. I am not sure of the FIOS but if it has only 2.4ghz it is restricted to 130Mbps in the Apple products even if it can do 270 or 300Mbps on all the rest. Apple deliberately restrict 2.4ghz to N lite. So you need a router that is 450Mbps or better the new AC version at 5ghz. And you need that router near where the Macbook usually resides. 5ghz fast connections are not going to be long range.
So you can buy a Gen5 AE.. or even a second hand Gen4 TC.. either are pretty good buys. The Gen5 AE I see on ebay all the time for around the $80 mark including post. The Apple refurbished store might even have stock.
And of course Apple are not the only brand.. you can buy excellent high speed wireless routers .. Asus RT-AC66U soundly beats the AC apple version.. (wonder how long that sentence will last!!)
AC is worthwhile if your Macbook is AC .. otherwise the older Gen5 AE are good value.
    2. I reckon a 1 year old TC Gen4 is also a good buy.. they sell around $150 in our market. Easy to setup.. fairly reliable. And you are not going to be worried to open it up and swap the hard disk.. which is actually easy.
ifixit rate it as moderate.. really it is less than that .. if you can read instructions.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
    3. A fast drive.. FW800 are still very good.. USB3 better and Thunderbolt tops but bank account emptying experience. It is possible to share the drive to the network.
    http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/
That is the best combo.. use the local external with TM.. and do it over wireless with to the iMac shared drive from the Macbook.
    4. NAS is a good but they can be unreliable.. even a USB drive on the AE can be unreliable. Up to the Gen5 Apple said it was not supported. Many people found out it was NOT supported... really.. not supported.. although it works for some.. How much is your data worth??

  • Setting up Time Capsule with existing AirPort Extreme 802.11n and AirPort Express.

I already have and am using an AirPort Extreme 802.11n with an AirPort Express. I want to set up a Time Capsule 802.11n. Which is the best way to configure this?

... Which is the best way to configure this?
The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile.

  • Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme & external HDD

Hullo all. For time capsule backups, i am either going to purchase a 1tb time capsule unit or an external usb drive to use with an airport extreme base station's usb port. Wondering if someone more knowledgeable than i knows if either choice offers a transfer speed advantage over the other.
Also, if i go with the external usb drive option then i'd like to employ a usb hub so that when necessary i can also run my printer off of the same airport's usb port. Would anybody know if this would work okay, without compromising backup speed and quality?
    Thanks!

Of course - that is the essence of my question: what's faster, time capsule or an AEBS and fast usb external drive. And is the speed difference significant.
One big problem not being addressed by that choice is that Time Capsule itself is slow. Even if you connect a computer over Gigabit Ethernet directly to a Time Capsule with its internal interface hard drive, you will not get throughput anywhere close to Gigabit Ethernet speeds.
From the Macworld review of Time Capsule:
Depending on the size and number of files being backed up, throughput ranged from 45 to 60 Mbps over gigabit Ethernet. This would put an initial 100GB backup at 4 to 6 hours.
That's right. Real transfer times are lower than 100Mbps Ethernet, on a par with 802.11g wireless, and well below USB 2.0.
The speeds in the review and in my experience mean that with Time Capsule, neither USB nor the hard drive is the real bottleneck because both have higher throughput than Time Capsule's networking chipset. I don't know if the AEBS would be faster.

  • Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme + External HD

Hi folks, please let me know if there is a better place to post this question. I need a backup system for my mac and I would also like a wireless router (don't need the wireless router at the moment but expect that I will need it in the near future). Have been looking at time capsule but have read a lot of user reviews which are not so favorable. I was thinking about instead buying an airport extreme and a LaCie D2 Quadra (1TB). One benefit I see of having two separate units is that I don't lose one or the other if the time capsule fails. My local apple reseller is recommending the LaCie as a good backup drive for macs and I have heard good things about the airport extreme. I have also been told that I could plug the HD into the USB2 on the airport extreme and have a wireless backup system. Just wondering if anyone has any comments or advice they can offer on that setup.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

What about connecting the Lacie drive to the mac by USB or firewire and not operating it wirelessly? Do you know if that is supported for Time Machine?
    Yes that will work.
Are there any other wireless backup setups that are supported for Time Machine?
    Only the Time Capsule.

  • Can i use an external hard drive with time capsule via an airport extreme?

i recently bought 750GB laCie hard drive... is it possible to use Time machine with the external HD plugged into my airport extreme?

Remember that Time Capsule is a hardware device.
Time Machine is a software feature of OS X 10.5.5.

  • Connecting Time Capsule wirelessly to Airport Extreme

    Hello,
I have just purchased a Time Capsule v7.3.1. I am trying to have my Airport Extreme connect wirelessly to my Time Capsule and then use the ethernet connection "wired" to my Xbox. I am unable to get an ethernet address that works when connected via ethernet. I had two Airport extreme's previously connected via wireless and had my Xbox connected via Ethernet on my one Extreme and things worked fine. It seems that my Time Capsule when connected via wireless to my Airport Extreme isn't getting a valid ethernet DHCP address and I cannot get it to work. When I use the wireless connection on my Airport Extreme it seems to work fine when I access the wireless connection to the Airport Extreme. However, wired does not.. Time Capsule

your secondary router should be placed using the manual button once Airport Utility is launched in "bridge" mode. then configure your ethernet and wireless.

  • Will Time Capsule conflict with Airport Extreme?

I just purchased a Time Capsule but after reading the discussion board it looks like it might conflict or override my Airport Extreme?  Also, if I do connect it, will it ever erase any information on its own without me manually deleting?  I think I'm experiencing buyers remorse. My main purpose is to free up space on my iMac. I could have just purchased a simple external hard drive but this seemed like a better choice at the time. Help!

Depending on the age of the Mac a USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt drive would be a much better choice.. as an addition to the TC.. TC is still needed if you have no backup. If you store your files on the external drive think about where you want them to be backed up to.
it looks like it might conflict or override my Airport Extreme?  Also, if I do connect it, will it ever erase any information on its own without me manually deleting?
No the TC and airport can live happily together.. just decide which is router and which is bridge.. as far as possible connect together with ethernet.. but you can wirelessly connect as well.
A TC is a backup device not really a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up.. but it will not erase anything without you deliberately erasing it..
Perhaps you mean the way Time Machine works.. if you erase something on the disk.. TM will eventually erase it from the backups.. this is very true.. but that is specific to TM and backups.. not to stuff you store on the TC. That is not erased unless you do it deliberately.
I think you should read over Pondini's FAQ to understand a bit more about TM and TC.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I learned a heap from them.. the home pages as well.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Although TM is loaded on every Mac since Leopard.. and very convenient to use.. it isn't the only show in town.. and other utilities can do disk images and incremental backups.. without half the issues that TM does. Although more limited in restore potential as well.

  • Time capsule to extend airport extreme base station

I have an airport extreme base station dual band that I use to create a wireless network. I use a first generation time capsule single band to extend the wireless network. In the area of my home where the time capsule is my ipad and macbook the signal strength of the wifi is great and works great however my iphone 4 works horribly on wifi in the same room where the time capsule is located. Why is this? And is there a better configuration that would work better?

The AirPorts are all designed to try to extend the 5 GHz signal because that is the fastest connection. But, because 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals, it's usually the 2.4 GHz network actually that winds up being extended because it's the stronger signal of the two bands and the extending device is usually located at some distance from the main router.
If your Time Capsule is extending the 5 GHz band, that's impressive. The AirPort Express would also probably extend the 5 GHz band if you placed it in the same area. Unfortunately, the iPhone cannot connect to that signal and must get it's connection from the main router. If you set things up so that the Time Capsule extends 2.4 GHz, then the iPad and your Mac will be running at significantly lower speeds.
It can be done by assigning a different name to the 5 GHz network and I can give you the steps. Is that what you want to do?
If you reversed the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme, you'll have to set the Time Capsule up at 2.4 GHz and the AirPort Extreme will only extend 2.4 GHz. It cannot extend both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz since it won't "see" that signal from the Time Capsule. No reason to do this really.
