Time Capsule Update and Backups

I recently applied the Time Capsule Update. It backs up 3 computers. It is a 2T Time Capsule.
When I did that from Mac A (a core duo), it told me that the backup it had would need to be replaced by a new backup. And then it put a lock on the backup file. So now I am making that new backup for Mac A.
What about Mac B and Mac C. (Both core 2 duo) They continue to back up to the Time Capsule. Do I need to create a new backup for them even though I received no message indicating that?
If I had applied the update from Mac B or Mac C would I have gotten the message only for the particular machine?
If I don't create new backups for Mac B and Mac C, do I know if the backups are OK?
What is the reason for the new backup? I have looked on the support pages, but cannot find any info about this.

Did Software Update on those Macs show the Update? If so, download and apply it, and see what happens.

If Software update doesn't show the update for those Macs, it's apparently not needed.

Yes, this is new and nobody's been able to figure out just what it's all about. Some folks who don't even have Time Capsules have gotten the update. Some get and apply the update, but don't see the message.
We don't really know if the update is being applied to the Time Capsule itself, or to OSX on Macs that have, or back up to, Time Capsules.
So, see what Software Update shows for your other Macs, and let us know. That may give us a clue. By the way, are they all running 10.6.2?

  • Time Capsule Updating and Windows PC

I have a beutiful wifi network based on Time Capsule, iMac, MacBook Air and Windows Laptop.
Since yesterday I was able to connect to my Timecapsule HD areas by my Windows Laptop using the dedicated AirPort utility.
Yesterday I update the TC software with the last issue and....all my Mac's are able to access to the TC HD but Windows Laptop not.
I still able to be connected with internet but when I log in to my disk I received the message "Unknown user, incorrect password or login disabled".
The same disks, with the same user are fully available from the Mac's.
    What happen?
    Roberto

I see you have no responses to this so will offer my (limited) knowledge. I have a TC 500GB "newer" and have the following connected wirelessly: MacBook Pro (N), Dell 610 (G), 2 iPhone 3G units (G), Toshiba Laptop (G), Apple TV (N), 2 Airport Express units (N - serving as bridges to remote ethernet devices) and an older Intel iMac (G). I see no issues with throughput on the Windows or the Apple devices. I also have a "guest network" setup and active for visitors. Everything has been updated to current versions of firmware.
Can you provide any more details on the setup of the network and the Windows computer? I have seen corporate Windows computers be very sluggish when first connecting to home networks due to a bunch of admin stuff the company loads on. This admin stuff is trying to find network servers and do stuff like do security verification, update virus software, verify loaded programs, push out Windows and other updates. Some of this stuff takes a while before it gives up and eats up performance.
I don't know if the Windows is N or G or what mode the TC is running in. Frequently the G performance can be compromised by interference from other network routers or even you cordless phones. Have you tried moving the Windows computer around? Does the performance improve if it's in the same room as the TC? Details may help.

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and storage?

Can I use my Time Capsule as a backup disk and put files from my other USB external hard drive on it, using the TC as an external as well?

Actually, there is a way to limit the amount of space Time Machine uses for backup so that it won't eat up all your disk space...for example, I have mine set to only use 65GB, and then it starts to overwrite older backups...Google it for more info. To begin with, I deleted my Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule, and used Disk Utility to create a Sparse Disk Image Bundle (turn off backups first!!!) with a capacity of 65GB in HFS Journaled, Case Sensitive...The Image must be named as follows "Full Computer Name_Ethernet MAC Address" (The ethernet MAC address is used even if you plan to solely use wifi for backups). for example, my Sparse Disk Image Bundle name is "Ahmad Atiya's MacBook Pro_00254b9d8f72.sparsebundle" Move this image to your time capsule's main directory (if you didn't create it there to begin with). Go to your Time Machine preferences, turn it on, and set it to use your Time Capsule. It should start using the image you created. If you click "get info" on the disk image, it'll show a capacity of whatever you created.

Time Capsule by default backup only data files and excludes program files like Photoshop, Lightroom, and MS Office, etc... right since if crash I can reinstall and not want to take up disk space for applications that I have CD to reinstall?  Or do I have to manually exclude these?

Time Machine will back all files except files like caches, trash or temp files, you can select with file you would like to exclude by going into the Time Machine preferences.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • Can I Partition a Time Capsule? and more...

My existing setup consists of an Airport Extreme wirelessly supporting 2 MacBooks ("MBs") 5 iOS devices, 2 WiFi/Airprint printers and then by wire (Ethernet) a couple of other devices.  In addition, the Extreme has a USB external hard drive visible/accessible to both MBs. Both MBs have their own external hard drives configured as Time Machines. All devices have latest software upgrades/updates.
I am thinking of replacing the Extreme with a 3TB Time Capsule ("TC") and I propose to Partition the TC's drive into 3 – with one partition supporting MB1's TM, the second supporting MB2's TM, and the third partition supporting/acting like a common hard drive (the same as exists external on the Extreme).  The existing external hard drives acting as TMs would be set aside and saved for TM recoveries; the TC situate TMs would simply commence as new TMs (I envision difficulties not worth the effort in moving the existing TM backups to the TC).
Query 1:  Can the latest 3TB Time Capsule be partitioned as I have proposed? (The reason I pose the question is a series of discussions dating back to 2012 that indicate a TC cannot be partitioned but the current Apple Store page for the 3TB TC  indicates a TC can support multiple TMs:  "you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location.") A review indicates the TC established at least two TMs automatically, but I'd like to also dedicate some space for a third partition non-TM drive….so, the Q – can I partition a TC?
Query 2:  Would I just be better off not trying to partition the TC and just letting it support two TMs automatically and plugging in a separate hard drive, as I currently have?  (Why hasn't Apple upgraded the USB connection to 3.0? oh, well, they probably will a month after I buy mine, right?  )
Query 3:  When moving the existing MBs from desk to couch it is necessary to first eject the existing TM external hard drives. If the TMs are moved to (or replaced by) a TC that would appear to no longer be necessary – because they aren't physically connected anyway. (Having typed this it seems so obvious, but….I'm asking because I just want to confirm.)
Any other suggestions/observations/watch-its would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Time Capsule drive cannot be partitioned in a traditional sense unless you pull the drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place the drive in a SATA to USB caddy or enclosure, attach the caddy directly to a Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the formatting operation. Once that is done, then you have to reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule.  Not a job for the faint of heart....and best left to a technician.
The Time Capsule "as is", can support multiple Time Machine backups from different Macs, but is basically a free for all as far as space is concerned. Time Machine backs up to a special file called a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule, and while it is possible to modify or limit the size of the sparsebundle file for each Mac, it is a complex operation. This document will give you an idea of the process:

Much simpler, therefore much better to do it this way.

Time Machine will automatically back up to the Time Capsule once you have it set up. No need to mount, or eject the drive, etc.
Any other suggestions/observations/watch-its would be welcomed.
The current version of the Time Capsule will be two years old in June....and Apple traditionally introduces new products in June.

  • Time Capsule, Looking for backup

Since the recent software update my timecapsule isnt backing up anymore, my drive seems to mount and appear on the desktop and i can see the drive but all i get is looking for backup, in the time machine prefrences i have tried re selceting disks and a few other things but still no joy, does anyone know if this a a bug in recent software and if so how to report to apple, if not any ideas to fix this world be great.
in finder i can see the time capsule drive and drag and drop files in and out with no problem
I have macbook 2GHz intel core 2 duo 4GB Ram running Mac OS X 10.7.3
    Time Capsule is running 7.6.1

I have had a similar problem with Time Capsule, Time Machine and Mac OS 10.7.
In french, Time Machine was telling "Recherche du Disque de Sauvegarde" which seems to be similar to "Looking for Backup Disk" and couldn't backup anything.
I've resolved it (while keeping the last backup) with following what is described there :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17239743#17239743
Below, what I have done in details :
To your own risks... (risk of erasing everything on the mac and of deactivate some functions... and to be unable to recover anything)
It has worked for me but it couldn't for you.
1/ Deactivate Wifi on the Mac
2/ disabled the backup from the preferences panel
    No pending backup.
    Open "Terminal" app
    3/ disabled spootlight:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    (described here : http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disab...mac-os-x-lion/)
4/ delete the following hidden folders from the diskboot and external drive backup (.Fseventsd and. Spootlight-V100)
4.1/ delete .Fseventsd on the mac, enter :
    cd /
    ls -l
(you must find .fseventsd and .spotlight-vt100)
    sudo rm .fseventsd/fseventsd-uuid
    sudo rmdir .fseventsd
    4.2/delete spotlight-vt100 of mac :
    sudo rm -dR .Spotlight-V100
4.3/ delete .fseventsd of Timecapsule :
    cd /Volumes
ls -l (you have to look for the backup directory)
cd Cop* (because for my computer : the name is 'Copies de sauvegardes de Time machine' and it is the single directory name begining by Cop)
sudo ls -l (check presence of .fseventsd et Spotlight-vt100)
    sudo rm -dR .fseventsd
    4.4/ delete .spotlight-vt100 :
    sudo rm -dR .Spotlight-V100
5/ Restart Time Capsule and mac
    6/ spootlight rehabilitated (details here :http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disab...mac-os-x-lion/) :
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
and index launch (found here : http://www.printedbyerik.com/2011/08...index-on-os-x/) :
    sudo mdutil -i on /
It took 4 hours for 500Go
7/ at the end : put an internet cable between Mac and Time Capsule (it is mandatory)
Launch a backup in Time Machine preferences.
For my computer : 15 hours for 70Go.
3 backup since without any problem.

  • Time Capsule update makes me input IP/Secret info

I updated the firmware on my Time Capsule, and it shows an error that my Apple ID is incorrect. This is true because I originally used the Time Capsule and Back to my Mac with MobileMe, which iCloud with your Apple ID has superseded. I tried to change my Apple ID, but when it tells me it needs to update that upon closing the AirPort Utility, it says "IP cannot be left blank" and forces me to input my "Primary RADIUS Server IP" and "Primary Shared Secret." I don't know what these are or why it's making me do this. Help?

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • Time Capsule just for backups, not for wifi.

I used to use my Time Capsule for both backups and wifi but constantly had issues, so I just disconnected it in favor of a simple Airport Express. No issues since switching, but now I have this Time Capsule just sitting here and don't do automatic backups any longer...I would like to use solely for back ups, I don't need these backups to be wireless, just for use with Time Machine. I can't find the answer by google, any suggestions?

I am trying to do the same thing but I am having an issue.
I, too, was having issues with using the Time Capsule (new one-2T) as a router and for backup (the Internet was dropping all the time). So I bought a separate router (ASUS RT-N56U) and have that plugged into my Motorola modem. The Time Capsule I have plugged into the router.
Airport Utility and I have become best friends as of late with all the problems I am having and my TC keeps getting lost-AU says that it was part of my network and now can't be found. Strangely, if I go to Open Network Settings from the menu bar and select Assist Me--->Diagnostics--->Select my network--->Continue and when the window pops up about Always Allow Keychain, I click on Always Allow. And that seems to correct the problem with my TC not being found/part of the network. This happens all the time lately.... Ever since I got the new router.
So if you or anyone have any insight into what is going on.... I will try it! Thanks for the help, Judy
