Time Capsule & Vista - 802.11n drivers?

I've set-up the TC to use the wireless-n only on the 5ghz spectrum. Everything is running fine under the Mac OS -- but booting Vista in the boot camp partition and using the wireless-n network is very slow and the signal is very weak.
Do I need load new Vista drivers, or reload the Broadcom drivers from the Mac OS disk in Vista? Any help is appreciated.

I've run into this same issue with a new MacBook Pro. The wifi drivers on my Leopard install disc don't work in Vista on this new machine, so I'm stuck without wifi for now.
From what I've seen so far, we might have to just wait for Apple to release a Boot Camp update to create new drivers for these machines. In the past, this typically means burning a new CD of drivers with the Boot Camp utility in Mac OS X (or dumping them onto a USB drive), then switching over to Windows and installing.
Vista tells me the actual manufacturer of the 802.11n hardware, so I'll try checking their site later this weekend to see if they have a newer driver version themselves that could work.

Can't connect to Time Capsule + no 802.11n support

I just got my new 13" MacBook (late 2008). Originally, I thought I couldn't connect to my wireless N router which happens to be Apple Time Machine. According to network utility program, my MacBook only supports a/b/g - this is not right! Now, I discover that in addition to the N problem I can't even connect to my Time Capsule wirelessly! Good thing I have 2 separate wireless routers (linksys).
My other Macs (white MacBook and 20" iMac) have no problem connecting to Time Capsule over 802.11n. Both machine indicates 802.11n support under network utility program.
Compound this problem with stuck 'a' key on my keyboard.
I really, don't get this problem. I spent an hour with Apple tech with no avail. I am thinking about returning this new MacBook.

I have the exact same problem you have described. Unable to find a solution. Odd because I have a 2007 MacBook Pro and it works fine wirelessly. Wireless-N on the MacBook works fine and it can connect to other wireless networks, just not it's home one.
If anybody is interested, here's a dump from the console log when airport attempts to connect. Our wireless station doesn't broadcast.

I'm in a 1700 sq ft house with my original 500 GB Time Capsule upstairs and a MacBook Pro unibody downstairs in the living room. With 802.11n only or 802.11n/g/b enabled on the TC, the MacBook Pro can't detect a network.
Would a new Time Capsule broadcast the 802.11n significantly better than the original in this situation?

If things check out when the MacBook is close to the Time Capsule, then this would indicate that you have too many obstructions...walls, ceilings, etc. between the Time Capsule and the MacBook when it is downstairs.
Yes, if I set the TC to 802.11n/b/g or 802.11n only, the MacBook Pro won't see the network. If I set the TC to 802.11g only, it shows full signal strength. This isn't surprising to me, as I have an older Airport Express whose signal also could be easily picked up downstairs.
Is there such a difference in range between 802.11n and 802.11g?
You may want to consider an AirPort Express to position it at an approximate mid-point between the Time Capsule and downstairs so that it can "extend" the wireless signal downstairs.
To get an idea if this might work, move your MacBook to a position that is 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance from the Time Capsule to the downstairs area where you want to use the MacBook. If you can get a good signal on the MacBook at that point, this means that an AirPort Express should receive a good signal as well so that it can "extend" the wireless network.
It's never possible to predict performance in advance, so if you want to try the AirPort Express, it would be a good idea to know the store's return policy in case things don't work as well as hoped.

Slow data transfer with Time Capsule on 802.11n ?

Actually, I don't know where to start. But let's explain my setup first:
My iMac (wired) and AppleTV (wireless) are connected to the Time Capsule (802.11n, 5Ghz)
My girlfriend's MacBook and 2 x iPhone 2G's (wireless) are connected to an Airport Extreme Base station (802.11b/g compatible).
The Time Capsule and AEBS are connected and show two different networks.
Now the problem:
When I copy files from e.g. the iMac to the MacBook or to the Apple TV, it's very slow. I've used scp to copy a 200 mb file and it took about 1.20 minutes (at 2.5MB/s). I've did the same when the iMac was connected over wireless and it took about 3.45 to 4.30 minutes (at 1.0MB/s).
I'm not sure if this IS slow, but it certainly feels like it. 802.11n should be around 100 Mb/s in practice and 802.11b/g around 20-25 Mb/s.
By the way: downloading from the Internet is excellent, I get the full download/upload speed my provider offers for my subscription.
Second, I added the signal strength/noise levels for the Time Capsule attached devices. They vary around -68Db signal, -90Db noise.
The question is: are these levels normal ? What should be higher or lower ?

The new Airport Extremes and Time Capsules suffers from terrible performance over the 5GHz band and it's a problem that not only affects me and you, but hundreds of thousands of other owners.
Nobody knows if it's a firmware problem or the Marvell chips inside that's the problem, and Apple hasn't said or done anything for months.
I'm still hoping for a firmware update to solve this, but if it doesn't get fixed soon enough, I'm gonna return it and go back to backing up to wired disk and my rock solid Airport Express.
Not the happiest answer, but at least you have a clue now.

If the name of your printer does not appear in the printer list when you click the + button, try contacting Canon Support to see if they have an updated printer driver that you could download and install.

If this does not work, then Canon has not provided the printer driver for their device to operate on a network USB connection.
Do you understand that if you can get the print function working, that fax, scan, copy, maintenance, etc functions will not work when the MP258 is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule?
Only the print function is supported on the Time Capsule, so if you need the other functions, you should connect the MP258 to your computer.....not the Time Capsule.

First time working with 802.11n, not working properly?

This is the first time I use 802.11n in my network there is only one AP1141 but the clients don't connect at 802.11n rates, instead they connect at data rates as low as 11 Mbps. At the begining they connect at 144 Mbps but immidiatly it decreases to 11 or 12.
Many of our wireless clients in the company are Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN.
Any comments?

Regarding the coverage area keep in mind this is a really small 4 floor building with an AP floor floor, I installed only one AP1141 in my floor and kept the AP1131 in the other 3 floors, I might reduce the power to half since I don't need them working at full power unless I need coverage in the stairs in order to enforce roaming to IPPhones. Also, I don't want to bond channels on 2.4 because I read that as a recomendation in a Cisco's document (anyways I did not find how to do it in 2.4, wuld be a nice tip if you tell me how just in case) so 144 Mbps would be great as long as it works properly. I did not experienced these rate hoping until I enabled this AP1141.
And yes most of the clients that reported issues are Intel (engineering team, haven't checked the rest yet).

is it possible to for time capsule to be up-dated to the 802.11 ac format? I hear this is the latest and greatest. Or is time capsule fixed with what it already has.
IF....Apple decides to incorporate the (still under development) ac format......they will not tell us anything about this until they actually announce the new product.
IF....they do, it would be extremely unlikely that any current versions of the Time Capsule could be "updated". As Kappy notes, we are talking about proposed hardware changes here....not just software or firmware.
For example, when Apple moved to simultaneous dual band Time Capsules a few years ago, it was not possible to update or upgrade existing Time Capsules at all.
Even among the recent 3rd and 4th generation Time Capsules.....you cannot change or update a 3rd generation Time Capsule to make it a 4th Generation Time Capsule.
You would be wise to conclude that this would also be the case for any future product.

Time Capsule & Vista?

I'm considering purchasing a Time Capsule to backup my Macs using Time Machine, but I also have a Vista Home Premium SP1 PC in my home that has a built-in backup utility in Control Panel. I was wondering, if I could set the backup destination in Control Panel to the Time Capsule & backup my PC, in addition to backing up my Macs via Time Capsule?

Vista + 802.11n PCMCIA + AEBS Giga = 300Mbps connection

With this combination, I managed to get a reported 300Mbps connection from my windows Vista laptop to a AEBS N:
Buffalo Wireless-N Nfiniti Dual-Band Notebook Adapter (WLI-CB-AG300N).
Latest vista driver downloaded from Buffalo website.
Airport Extreme Base Station (Gigabyte version) with latest s/w update.
Allow only N client on 5Ghz.
Authentication Type WPA2-PSK.
Both windows and the Buffalo client s/w reports 300Mbps a connection.
Copying a 4GB file, windows reported average speed of 3.2MB/Sec.
Is this correct for a claimed 300Mbps connection?
Only just got this today, so not sure about long term stability.

Just to follow up, running the same test with my macbook boot camp vista connected wirelessly at 300Mbps, windows reported a speed of 6.1MB/sec. This is nearly twice as fast as the windows laptop & pcmcia card. Maybe the bottleneck is with the pcmcia card, or maybe the drivers need to be tweaked further.

Problem with new Time Capsule w/ 7.5 Firmware Slow Speeds on 802.11b/g

I purchased a new 1TB Time Capsule with v. 7.5 Firmware last week. This Time Capsule is replacing a first gen 500GB TC with Firmware v. 7.4.2. I have 2 Macbook Pros connecting to the new Time Capsule via 802.11n at 5Ghz and 2 iPhones and 1 first gen Mac Pro connecting to it via 802.11b/g at 2.4Ghz. The Macbook Pros connecting at 5Ghz move data fine. The connection is very fast. Speedtest.net average about 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up. The devices connecting on the 2.4Ghz radio are slow as molasses. They test at less than 30k down and 30k up. Beyond that they have trouble moving data around the LAN as well. There are no sources of major interference near the TC. In fact the TC is in the same location as the old unit which was also running at 2.4Ghz with no problems. I contacted Apple tech support and then went to a local Apple store for an exchange. They gave me another new TC but the problem persists with the new units as well. This evening I took the new Time Capsule into the basement and isolated from any kind of interference with no success. I plugged in the old TC and the 802.11g devices were back up to speed.
Has anyone had any similar issues with the new AE or Time Capsule? I'm sure it's not unheard of to get two defective units but it's not likely. So I am thinking there may be an issue with the new firmware. I tried to downgrade to 7.4.2 but the new units require 7.5. Any suggestions? All network settings are the same as they were with the previous Time Capsule. The only thing that's changed is that both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios are active.

got some problems with Time Capsule and 7.5 Firmware as well. Since it is my first device, I have no experience with older firmwares or models though.
It is impossible to connect to the 5GHz network. Neither when I have 5GHz and 2.4Ghz in one network or when I set a separate network for the 5GHz.
I always get a timeout message, I also tried deactivating the guest network and I also tried without any password, just would not connect to the 5GHz. By the way, I am sitting 50cm away from the TC and of course, I do have a MacBook Pro that supports 802.11n standard, a brand new MacBook Pro 13.
So, any ideas? I'm going to call Apple on Monday, can't check if it's the notebook, cause I do not have a second device to test ist. My iPhone works fine (802.11g), the 2.4Ghz also works fine with rates around 130-145 usually when close to the TC.
I also noticed that my MacBook Pro won't connect to the 802.11n when compatibility with 802.11b/g is activated. Then it runs with 802.11g instead....
pretty annoying, thought this would work right away?!

Time Machine 802.11n

I am considering buying a Time Capsule and use Time Machine to back up 2 iMacs (specs of both below).
However I see that Time Capsule uses 802.11n Wi-Fi and System Profiler says: Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g'.
Hoping someone can elucidate/elaborate...?

I checked my TC and in the wireless tab of Airport Utility, the radio mode can be selected. The options are 80211.n (b/g compatible), 80211n (a compatible), 80211n 2.4GHz, and 80211n 5GHz.
If you have wireless phones in the house you might want to check the freqs to avoid potential signal conflict. This shouldn't be a problem though as long as the devices potentially using the same freq use different channels. DECT 6 phone should not be a problem. Older phones might be a problem i.e. 2.4GHz phones.
After all this, actual thruput on the Internet is dependent on your ISP and the loading of the Internet. I tested on http://speedtest.net and experienced no significant changes in thruput to the same test site no matter what 80211n mode (g or n) or freq setting (2.4/5GHz) I used.

MacBook Air and problems with Time Capsule in 5GHz Radio Mode

We have our Time Capsule configured to 802.11n only (5 GHz). We've done this to work more efficiently in a particularly noisy wireless area. The problem is that the MacBook Air can't maintain a connection to it and when it loses the connection, the wireless interface seems to disappear from the Mac altogether - the wireless status indicator just shows an empty cone. The only solution is a restart. Sometimes it loses the connection after a couple of hours, sometimes within minutes, though it always goes eventually. All other machines on the network are fine, and switching the Time Capsule to 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) solves the problem, though there's a lot of noise at that frequency and our network performance as a whole suffers.
I know there's similar threads around dealing with the MBA and wireless issues (I've tried all the solutions vaguely related, e.g. deleting and recreating the wireless interface), though none that deal with this specific problem, which I'm convinced is caused by the radio mode of the Time Capsule.
All software / firmware is the latest:
MacBook Air 10.5.2 Wireless Card Firmware Veriosn Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.5)

I'm running my TC in 5ghz mode with my MBA. My original problem was the lack of signal strength coming from my AEBS caused the MBA to have a slow connection. There are a number of pipes in the wall that separates the two rooms where my MBA lives and the AEBS is.
So, I hard wired the TC to the AEBS and placed the TC in the room where my MBA lives most of the time. Now that the signal strength is really good I'm not having any issues.

Using Airport Express to Extend a Time Capsule Network: Results (*Long*)

Thought I would share my recent (2 hours ago) experience with setting up an Airport Express to Extend a Time Capsule 802.11N 5Ghz Network. Basically I just followed the directions in the Apple Airport Utility, using the "Extend a Wireless Network" setting:
Time Capsule (TC) 802.11N 5Ghz: In computer room
Linksys (LNK) 802.11g configured as dual network router with TC, also in computer room.
Airport Express (AE): In living room, about 50' away, several old plaster walls in between.
According to iStumblr:
1) I get an 80% signal from my TC when my MacBook is practically sitting on top of it.
2) I get an 88% signal from my Linksys 802.11g sitting next to the TC
3) I get 35% signal from my TC when my MacBook is in the living room. This is NOT enough signal, for some reason, to maintain a decent internet connection.
4) I get a 46% signal from my LNK from the same location. This IS enough signal to connect to the network.
5) With the AE configured as "Extend a Wireless Network" to the TC, and placed in the living room (again, about 50' from the TC base station), I get a 55% signal from the AE (which shows up as the same name as the TC network, for obvious reasons) Again, enough signal to connect to the network.
I did some internet speed tests using SpeedTest (take these with a grain of salt, of course)
1) From computer room over TC: 18Mb/s~22Mb/s average over 2 days of testing
2) From computer room over LNK: 18Mb/s~22mb/s average over 2 days of testing
3) From living room over AE(extended network from TC): 5~7Mb/s average in the last 2 hours
4) From living room over LNK: 12~14Mb/s average over 2 days of testing
Preliminary conclusions:
1) Setting up an extended network is pretty straightforward, and works without issue.
2) My 802.11g network with my old Linksys is far superior than my new extended 802.11N 5Ghz network, at least for internet connection speed.
3) I feel a bit irritated buying this AE now to extend my 802.11N network, if its not going to give me any advantages over my ancient 802.11g network
4) File transfers may still be better over the 802.11N-I will test that out at some point.
5) I have not tried WDS instead of "Extend a Wireless Network"-not sure what the benefits would be.
Computer Notes:
MacBook Aluminum-MB(Al) 2.0 C2D (802.11n)
finds 8 wireless networks in my neighborhood (3 of them are mine)
MacBook White-MB(Wh) 1.83 CD (802.11g only)
finds 10 wireless networks in my neighborhood (3 of them are mine)
Oddly, the signal strength of my networks isn't that different between the two computers-between 2% and 5%, even though it can't see as many networks. The 2 networks the MB(Wh) CAN see are at around 21% and 25% signal-not sure why the MB(Al) can't see them at all.

Your biggest mistake is confusing signal strength with signal quality. The signal indicator indicates strength and nothing else. You need to be using iStumblr to look at SNR (Signal to noise ratio).
