Time capsule vs  Linksys WRT1900AC

Does the Apple time capsule get better speeds than the router Linksys WRT1900AC?

The comcast router is all you need for router function. The TC will be in bridge mode.. plugged WAN port TC to the LAN port Comcast Router.
Bridge will be like this on the network tab.
You will create a wireless network.
You can name it as you like but I recommend short names.. eg TCwifi
Use WPA2 personal security and set a password. 8-20 characters depending on your level of paranoia.. pure alphanumeric.
You can also use an identical wireless name = SSID and Security / password as your comcast router.
It doesn't really matter which wireless clients join to.. you need nothing more than this at least for now. And you can run your TM backups to the TC.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys Router Issues

The internet cable is connected to the WAN port and the Time Capsule is connected is to one of the ports of the Linksys router. I can successfully backup my MacPro and use the internet for Mail and Safari.
I want to take advantage of the high speed ethernet performance of Time Capsule. However, I don't know if the Time Capsule is really faster than my Linksys router.  Where do I get this information? I suspect the Time Capsule is much faster because I just purchased the Time Capsule. The router is at least 5 years old.
In spite my concern about the speeds of the Time Capsule and Linksys router, I tried to attach the Time capsule as recommended by Apple for a  "first time set up." It failed. The Time Capsule using the AirPort Utility cannot make a network connection. I reestablished the devices as given in paragraph one. WiFi runs again.

Ethernet speed on your local network is determined by the slowest connected device which most likely will be the LinkSys router or your computer.

  • Airport Time capsul or Linksys wrt1900 + external HDD?

I Need to get a new wifi and also back up device. I currently have the old flat airport time capsule. I live in a 3 story house made from steel frame. So my wifi is not strong at all. I also use a small express to extend the wifi. But still bad.
I Have been reading about the below wifi router and they say it is quite powerful and even good for multiple story homes.
    Linksys WRT1900AC Dual Band Smart Wi-Fi Wireless AC Router (2.4 + 5GHz)
IF I got this and an external HDD the cost is about the same.  Anyone have any experience with linksys?   I would prefer the apple one but I just want to improve my wifi throughout the house.

I would spend a bit of time in the charts and actual reviews here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/charts/router/bar/111-2_4-ghz-dn-c?see=P_D
There is a lot of info which you can get the charts to show you.. various location.. different bands etc.
However the tests are done on PC clients and PC wireless cards.. and you are not going to get the same results in Apple products..
As with most of these things.. wireless promises much but delivery is always less than expectation.
I would doubt any single wireless router can cover adequately a 3 storey house.
I can also tell you support for Time Machine will be sorely lacking even if it is listed.. these routers cannot format the disk HFS+, so they will be different and no where near reliable for TM.
It is much better to plan on running an ethernet connection between the 3 floors in some central location if that is at all possible.. and to run 3x wireless AP around the house.. if that is not possible then proper wireless mesh gear will perform much better than domestic stuff.. so look at ubiquiti unifi etc.
Linksys new products since being sold by Cisco and taken over by Belkin have been a disappointment.
Asus has tended to be the preferred units.. and do seem to work well with apple devices.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys Buffalo NAS

I am struggling with my new TC and looking for some pointers.
What I want to be able to do is have setup my network they way it used to be before my linksys router crapped out... only now with TC I want the added time machine backup capability.
what I used to have was cable modem>linsys router>linkstation buffalo NAS (ethernet) and (wireless) to airport express (with USB printer and Airtunes speakers)
I have managed to get all set up EXCEPT the linkstation buffalo.. for some reason simply plugging it into the ethernet jacks on the TC doesn't allow it to show up as a shared drive... and unfortunately there is no way to do a USB to USB on this device because both have the same connector end and I can't find anywhere that this cable exists.
    help?
Does TC support an additional NAS device in it's network capabilities? I have 'extended the network' and any other preferences through airport setup utility, but to no avail...

My Xbox 360 can't connect to Time Capsule wirelessly unless I run in 802.11b mode or unless I purchase something like an AirPort Express or similar wireless access point. I use the Linksys as my main router because it has much more configurable options, especially with the DD-WRT firmware, than the Time Capsule does. The Time Capsule is very user friendly but I think it sacrifices a lot of advanced options.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys WVC54GCA Camera needs tweaked.

I replaced my Linksys wireless router with Time Capsule. Trying to get my WVC54GCA camera back online. I am hard wired from cable modem in basement to Time Capsule which I located in living room then cable back to switch in basement for distribution to network. Using the camera on ethernet cable I can get it to work fine when attached to the switch but not when attached directly to a port on the TC. I run 2 Macs, a PC and Direct TV DVR wired and wireless for Macbook Pro. Everything works fine other than being able to locate the camera where I want it. What setting am I missing? I set the port forwarding and can get in fine via DYNDNS as before.

Good thoughts. I am using a Netgear Gigabit 8 port auto-sensing switch and it must be sorting things out. The TC is the final piece to making my home network totally gigabit. At this point I think I will pull another ethernet cable from the switch to the area I want to locate the camera.

  • Time capsule and linksys

I would like to connect my new Time capsule but I don't know how it interact with my actual router (Linksys WRT54G).
    Thanks

The Time Capsule will work fine if you use an Ethernet cable to connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Linksys router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Since the wireless on the Time Capsule is much faster than the Linksys, I would suggest that you turn off the wireless on the Linksys and use the Time Capsule for your wireless needs.
To do this, open AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network" and choose the "Bridge Mode" option when it is presented. (AirPort Utility should suggest this setting for you, which is the correct setting)
Continue following the steps and click Update to save your settings. The Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds.
No you can lgo on to the new wireless network that you named during the setup.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys router bridging two networks

I have set up a Time Capsule on a small business network and have made use of its dual wifi to set up guest access to the internet separate from our private network. It defaults to IP address 192.168.1.1 which conflicts with a computer that must be assigned that address so I have given it the IP address 192.168.0.1. I was hoping to bridge between the 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x networks using a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I have been able to get internet access from the 192.168.1.x network and port forward to our Windows e-mail server but can't get individual computers to see each other from one network to the other.
Can I set the Time Capsule IP to anything other than x.x.x.1 or alternately use it or another router to bridge two different networks?

Ethernet speed on your local network is determined by the slowest connected device which most likely will be the LinkSys router or your computer.

  • Using Time Capsule with Linksys WPS54GU2 print server

Just curious if anyone else has had issues with using the Time Capsule with the above print server. I have been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work with WEP encryption turned on (WEP or no encryption is all the Linksys supports). Before I upgraded to the Time Capsule, I was using a 40-bit encryption key and everything was fine. It appears that you can only use 128-bit encryption on WEP with the Time Capsule, so I had to change keys. I haven't been able to ping the print server unless it's wired or encryption is turned off.
On top of this, I've also tried to run the old router with 128-bit WEP using the same key, and that doesn't work either, so it would seem to point to the print server as the culprit. I'm running the latest firmware on both devices.

Did you ever get this to work? I've got a similar Print Server and its WPS54G. PS was working wireless and now after adding the Time Capsule it no longer does.

  • Time Capsule with Linksys E4200

    Hi
Just bought the 2TB Time Capsule for back-up and wifi router purposes. My current router is the Linksys E4200 and I've also added the Linksys Range Expander given the thick walls in the apartment. Will I be able to add the TC to this network and still get all the benefits of the latest TC or should I be using the TC as my wifi base station (rather than the E4200). I'm wary of having to invest further in range expanders etc if I used only the TC as my wifi router. Please advise the best set-up in this case. Thanks very much.

If you already have Linksys products providing your wireless network signal, then you would not want to also configure the Time Capsule for wireless.....unless.....you really do need another wireless network, or you want to make use of the 802.11ac capabilities of the product.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the E4200 to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and set up the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".
Once you have it set up, you can test out the wireless so see how it peforms but I would be surprised if it has the range of the Linksys 4200 and the Linksys extender(s).
IF.....you have brand new 802.11ac capable Macs, like the MacBook Air, iMac, or MacBook Pro, you will get a faster signal connecting to the Time Capsule wireless, but the Mac will need to be in close proximity to the Time Capsule for this to work correctly.
If you decide that you don't need the wireless on the Time Capsule, it will be a simple matter to turn off the wireless function. Then, you can use the Linksys wireless and the Time Capsule will perform as a network backup device.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys AM200

    Hi,
I wondered if someone can PLEASE PLEASE help me.
I am trying to setup my TC with my Linksys AM200 and struggling. I have read many posts in other forums that the AM200 should be setup Bridge Only Mode which I have done and set the TC to connect to DSL using PPPoE and although the Status tab says that the DSL connection is up, I still cannot get out to the internet.
I have tried the TC in Ethernet mode and I cannot get the DSL to come up at all. My ISP is expecting a PPPoA connection so I think this might also be an issue.
If I check the TC status page, I notice the IP address is 0.0.0.1, I dont think this is right.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

I have the same problem with two TC's. When the TC show IP 0.0.0.1 under the PPPoE configuration, although I manage to connect, I cannot use the Internet. I found out (as ISP provider) that the PPPoE client dictate to the server to use 0.0.0.1 as IP, instead of the server giving legitimate IP from his own pool.
The only times I've success is when I tried to connect and the IP address under the PPPoE was blank.
Trying to be in that mode (IP blank) fails and it returns to IP 0.0.0.1 write after the first restart of the TC.

  • Using Linksys WRT54G as a wired network extender with Time Capsule

I have been using the WRT54G as my primary home router with an Airport Express attached to it via Ethernet cable at the opposite end of the house to extend my network. I have recently purchased a Time Capsule, which I plan to make my primary router, and I would like to use the Linksys as the extender and free up the AE to take to my office for music streaming. Is this a doable solution, and is the Linksys difficult to set up for this purpose? The AE currently uses the same network name and password as the Linksys and is a seamless extension of my network. I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.

    Welcome to the discussions, Hookshot!
I would like to use the Linksys as the extender
That is doable if you connect the Linksys to the Time Capsule using the ethernet cable and configure the Linksys in "bridge mode" to use the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network.
and is the Linksys difficult to set up for this purpose?
You might want to post on the Linksys forum for that question as we would not have that type of specific info on the Time Capsule forum.
and free up the AE to take to my office for music streaming
The Express would be configured to "join" a wireless network for this. The Express will pick up the strongest signal from either the Time Capsule or Linksys, depending on where they are located in relation to each other.
I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.
It will be if you use the exact same wireless network name, security and password on the Time Capsule and Linksys devices.

  • VPN with Time Capsule, Linksys router

We are running SLS 10.6.4 on a Mac Mini over Cox business internet with a fixed IP, and we've been trying to get VPN service working on the Mini through our TC. After some finagling I came across this post which describes the lack of L2TP support in the TC, so we bought a Linksys/Cisco WRV210 VPN router. We do want to keep the TC on the network for file sharing.
When setting this up, it would seem to me that the WRV210 should be (or would have to be?) the gateway. However, it appears to be limited in the number of ports that can be forwarded (at least without manually editing its config file; the web interface doesn't show enough for our needs). Or maybe there is a way to use the WRV210 for handling VPN access, while mapping a range of other ports to the TC and then on to the server?
Alternatively, perhaps we can continue using the TC as the gateway, mapping VPN access through the TC to the WRV210?
If anyone else has any experience with this type of setup, feel free to chime in.

Having tried this in the past......the only way that I could ever get the WRT54G to connect correctly was by turning off the wireless security on both the Time Capsule and Linksys device.
Not sure if you want to run an open network.....or even if that will work with newer firmware on the Time Capsule. I believe that I was using 7.4.2 or possiby 7.5.2 at the time.
But, you never know. Maybe another user has a magic wand.
My opinion......life would be tons easier if you added an AirPort Express to the Time Capsule network, and added an Ethernet switch with as many ports as you need....and the connection will run 2-3 times faster or more than the WRT54G can provide.

  • Problem with Time Capsule Wireless Network...

I have Time Capsule over a year and it worked fine with Xfinity Modem. Recently, Xfinity had upgraded modems to Wireless router and I have ARRIS TG862 from them. I was able to set up wireless network using bridge mode on my Time Capsule and it all worked fine for a while.
My set up is: Arris Router is conected to Time Capsule thru ethernet connection. I have two more Airport Express in different areas of the house (one in Theater room and one in upstair office). I have conncted one port of Time Capsule to linksys switch which is supplying connection for all wired devices on network.
Last week, our wirless network stopped working and I rebooted router and TC. Still no resolution. I went ahead and set up the TC to factory settings but forgot to plug out all the network connections from it. I reconfiugred Apple TC with same wireless network name and same network settings. Most of the wired devices are connecting fine and two of the iphones and Macbook Pro won't connect. iphones, seems to be getting IP address but won't connect to interent. My windows laptop says connected to "EAGLE" my wireless network but "EAGLE 2" provides internet connection. I have reset my TC to factory defaults and reset same way so many times but still same results. I called Comcast and asked them to turn off wireless in their router thinking that router is creating a second wireless network but I still have the same issue.
Any suggestions on how should I set up my TC? I think, it went insane..............:(
Should I set up TC with a brand New wireless network Name to resolve this issue?
I have 7.6.4 version on TC.
I thought I knew, but what's the right procedure to set up TC? Plugged in the router and unplug from everything else and connected thru an ethernet connection to my laptop?
I have wasted so much time on this with the same results every time.
I did unplug all the network connections from TC and reset to factory defualts and set up my wireless again but same results.
Can someone please help me with this? Thanks in advance.

What is the model of the TC? The actual number.. A1xxx from the base of the TC is important.
When you have a modem router.. then the TC must be in bridge mode.. and create a wireless network.
Your names are not yet windows compatible.. please use all names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Fixing names is important part of this.
But the latest firmware 7.6.4 is also troublesome. I would downgrade it to 7.6.1 and factory reset before you start that process.
Any TC older than 3years may have hardware issues.. a Gen3, A1355 may need a replacement and certainly anything older does.
Drivers in windows for wireless are problematic as well..
Certainly start there and see how it goes.

  • Can i use Time Capsule Media with Media Extender?

    HI
I have Mac Book Air, Time Capsule & LG Plasma TV And i have more than 800+ Movies in my Time Capsule. And i want to watch these movies on my Plasma TV, By CABLE OR WIFI n
Please some one suggest what Media Extender support to browse media files from Time Capsule Netgear, LinkSys, AppleTV, Belikin or anyother
    Thanks & Regards
    Mac

We use a Western Digital TV HD 1080P. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-1080P-Media-Player/dp/B001ILFDCK You would connect the WD box to the TV set, using your own HDMI cable. Then you would connect the TC to the USB port on the WD box. Nice on-screen graphics, uses folders to separate categories, and not limited to iTunes content.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to a Linksys wireless network

I made the same mistake as everyone else with 7.3.1. The main problem I had was that after the update the TC wouldn't connect to my wireless network anymore. I put in the network name and password, which worked with version 7.3, and it wouldn't connect as an 'extend network' option.
I've rolled back to version 7.3 and now I'm having the same problem. I can't make it join my existing wireless network...? Any ideas? This thing's been nothing but problems since I bought it. Now I'm reading that TC's can't be used to join existing networks if it's not an Apple base station. I use a Linksys WRT54GS and I know that's not true because it worked before.
Help?! I'm on the edge with this one!

At first I had the same problem with being unable to connect a time capsule using airport utility 5.3.1 to a linksys wrt54g. I was finally able to when I followed the software's recommendation to use the encryption type: *WPA2 PERSONAL*.
So I connected an ethernet cable from my MacBook to the Linksys and changed the type of encryption from wep to wpa 2 personal and then I reset the Time Capsule and reinstalled/reconfigured it with the general setting "WPA / WPA2 Personal" in the encryption area.
Now it is working as a part of the linksys network, but I have not yet been successful at using it to "extend" the network like it should, and like I was told it could by a sales rep at the Apple Store. I'll be calling customer support tomorrow to solve this issue.
I hadn't configured the linksys in a while, so in case you don't know off the top of your head as I did not, to do so:
    1. connect the cable to the linksys and use your browser to go http://192.168.1.1
    (unless you changed this).
    2. just type "admin" in the password field (unless you changed this)
    3. go to the "wireless" tab, and then finally the "wireless" sub-tab.
    4. after choosing the WPA2 Personal encryption type, I left the other settings alone: "AES" as the type of " WPA Algorithms", and "3600 seconds" for the "Group Key Renewal"
(if you changed the login settings on the linksys there's a reset button on the back)
    Hope this helps...
