Time capsule vs seagate central

I have an external drive to use for time machine but it is not plugged in all the time. My HD on my macbook pro is maxed out. I need something to back up and be able to use my files off from. Wireless is a must. Any suggestions?

Backing up over wireless.....no matter which drive you choose.....is going to be 5-10 times slower than backing up using a direct wired connection.
So, in addition to delays, there are 5-10 times more chances of an error occurring over wireless, damaging or corrupting your important data.
Are you OK with this?

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......

  • Time capsule and Seagate external hard drive, Time capsule and Seagate external hard drive

I have Mac Book Pro with Retinal Display Mac OS X 10.8.2 connected Time Capsule 1TB using wireless network. I recently purchased Seagate Backup Plus 3TB and I connected to TC. However, I cannot find the Seagate drive on the network or via Aiport Utility. I used to have Western Digitial My Book and was able to detect the hard drive on TC. I changed to Western Digital Passport 2TB and it did not work. I wondered why it is the case. Please help me to hook up Seagate Backup Plus. Thank you!

Make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extendeded (Journaled)
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply
If you have the correct format for the drive and sufficient power, the drive should appear in AirPort Utility

  • Time Capsule vs Seagate for professional video and music

    Hi there,
I don´t know what to purchase, I want an external hard drive to storage my music and videos as well my photos work, and keep my computer free in space. But if all my documents are in my hard drive, so I wouldn´t backup my documents but only in the hard drive, What a good idea would be to have a seagate? So that I can create a cloud and store my data there, so if the seagate will fail I could recover my documents from the cloud.
I am thinking to purchase a timecapsule 3TB or a Seagate Business Storage 4TB
    Thanks a lot!!!

  • Time capsule disk slow

Hi all. First post and relatively new Apple user. I have a question.
I bought a time capsule and found it incredibly slow at disk writes. Setup is as follows.
Lyksys router with time capsule connected via ethernet. Time capsule has created new wireless network and has one wireless client, my macbook pro. I also have a mac mini plugged in the back of the time capsule with it´s wireless turned off. The mac mini has a usb disk attached.
I´ll spare the details but planned to use time capsule as a central location for movies, iTunes and photos (I planned to rsync this data to a usb disk attached to the time capsule from time to time). I am not using time machine.
After much upgrading, downgrading and mucking about, the time capsule got to useable speeds. However, my test is "time cp rugby.avi /Volumes/Data" where rugby.avi is 700MB in size run from my macbook pro.
Best speed I have achieved is 1m 40s. This morning I ran the test before going to work and got 1m 50s. Came home, did nothing except run the test and get 2m 45s. Run it again 3m 25s. Run the test to the mac mini and get 1m 22s. Then to the usb dsk attached to the mac mini 1m 40s. Then du time capsule again and get 3m 50s.
To copy the data to the macmini, the data must go through the time capsule wirelessly so we can rule that out as a source of the peculiar speed difference.
My real point is that time capsule seems to have a problem actually writing to the disk. I have no idea what this is and so have decided to return it.
However, if I buy an airport extreme and plug a usb disk in it, does anybody think I might get speeds close to what I get transferring now to the mac mini or should I just get myself another mac mini, after all, it seems a lot faster than using time capsule.
    Hope you can help.
    Regards

Thanks for the reply. I´m not too concerned with real numbers as such though they are obviously interesting. All I know is that copying that fine in under 2 minutes is good enough for my purposes. Copying remotely to the mac mini internal disk and also remotely to a usb disk attached to the mac mini gives me a speed I am happy with. Time Capsule can also occasionally compete too but mostly gets nowhere near it.
I´ll check out your links but I guess would like to hear if anybody has been complaining about the airport extreme with attached usb disk being slower than they expect.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply though.

  • HT4260 Airport extreme and time capsule connection order in a roaming network

I plan to create a roaming network with my current Airport Extreme as the primary device connected to the internet and the new Time Capsule as the secondary device in Bridge mode. The connection between AE and TC will be wired (ethernet). Then I plan to connect the PC that needs backing up to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. Apart from the PC-backup functionality, I'd like to use the Time Capsule as a central NAS-device in my network. All other wired network devices that need access to the NAS (Apple TV, Xtreamer) are currently connected to the primary Airport Extreme with ethernet cables. My question: is there any reason why I should consider reversing the setup order, i.e. making the Time Capsule the primary device connected to the internet and the Airport Extreme the secondary device? Would this have a positive or negative effect on Time Capsule functionality and performance in the network? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Your Gen3 Extreme and all TC are gigabit.. as long as you connect with the required standard cable to have a gigabit connection between the two, there will effectively be no difference. In a home network you will struggle to saturate gigabit no matter what you do. Although the difference between the two configurations is really very small.
General rule is keep whatever is using the highest bandwidth closest and directly connected to whatever it is using.. shrug.. in this case you can follow or not.. it is more a guideline.

  • Time Capsule: Connectivity loss when starting backups

Ever since getting my Time Capsule, I've noticed sporadic dropouts on my VOIP line and when video-conferencing. There are periods of a few seconds when others cannot hear me, or conversely I cannot hear them. With video conferencing, the connection will stutter - then finally cut out completely. I also see occasional "burps" with my internet connectivity, where sites do not respond briefly, then with a reload be fine. I had just written it off as standard network jitter or other problems, but it's gotten annoying enough to investigate.
I finally figured it out - whenever a Time Machine backup begins, my connectivity to the internet drops for a few seconds. I'm not sure if this is just when the drive is spinning up, or something to do with actually commencing a backup. With three Macs in the house all backing up, this happens with some regularity and it's pretty annoying.
Is anyone else seeing this? I use the Time Capsule as my central router, and it's running an N-only network. My MacBook Pro connects to it via (N), my wife's MacBook is on (G) connected through another Airport Extreme, and the Mac Mini is on gigabit ethernet. I'd be glad to provide any further detail.

This continues to be crippling. In fact, with multiple computers on the network, I can count on my connection being interrupted about every 10-15 minutes. VOIP calls die, video conferencing dies, online games become useless. All because the Time Capsule is a flawed product that cannot walk and chew gum at the same time.
Given Apple's extremely lackluster history of updates, support, and communication, I don't expect this will ever be fixed. And I don't expect I will ever buy another Apple networking product (after having three Airport Base Stations, an Airport Express, and now a Time Capsule).

  • Have networked external drive for backup. 3 Macs, 1 iMac, 2 MBPros. I'm using Airport Express net'd to Extreme(my router). Ethernet from Express to Seagate Central. Since Maverick Time machine has become unstable, what can I do?

Have 2 almost new Mac Book Pros & a 27" March '13 iMac. All are 10.9.4. Wireless backup for all had been functioning well until Maverick was installed in all three. Airport Extreme is my router, Express connected to Seagate Central 4TB ext drive wirelessly. Wireless sig levels are maxed out at all 3 systems & Time Machine is now unstable and Apple Care networking tech contact says my config is not supported. Will it be supported if I acquire the new Airport Extreme, replacing the older version? If not, what config will permit 3 systems running TM backups every hour to one backup drive?

Apple do not support Time Machine to the older Gen1-5 AE with a USB drive.
I am not even sure if they support Gen6 although they do now say it will work.
You would be better buying a Time Capsule than another AE.. it is much faster than using USB drives and Apple more likely to help you.. if help is possible on mavericks.
You will find a cheaper solution is to use Carbon Copy Cloner.. which can continue using your existing setup.. it costs $40 for a license to cover all the computers in your home.

  • Time Capsule as central storage in addition to Time Machine backups?

I have been using a MacBook and just recently bought my wife the new aluminum MacBook to replace our old PC Desktop. I am considering buying the 1TB Time Capsule as well. I understand it can backup both machines via Time Machine.
    My question:
I have iTunes & iPhoto databases on my MacBook which I modify, edit, and use routinely. Can I set Capsule up so that I can continue to house those databases on my laptop, but any changes sync with centrally stored databases on Capsule that my wife can access through iPhoto and iTunes on her new MacBook. She wouldn't be doing any editing or updating to either, other than use for viewing or syncing her iPod, etc.
Is this within Capsule's capabilities or is is it like my current Time Machine External HD that can only be used for Time Machine backups?
Thank you, any help would be much appreciated before I decide whether or not to make this purchase.

I don't want to discourage you from getting a Time Capsule (TC), but from my experience its primary purpose is to be the target of Time Machine backups. It can also perform as a NAS device, but it does not seem to be well suited as a media server. Sharing a single iTunes or iPhoto Library is, in my opinion, not something I would recommend, especially when streaming iTunes during Time Machine (default: once per hour) backups are running. Also you won't be able to stream the iTunes content from the TC to a media extender, like the AppleTV.
However, there's a lot of opinions out there on this topic. Here are just a few articles to get you started:

  • My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.

My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.
    I am running OS 10.7.5
Both the TC and AE are updated to 7.6.1
The Seagate drive in formatted: Journaled HFS+
I tried everything on Apple's Article: HT1331 and the basic reboots and restarts.
    "Next"

It sounds like you may be confusing "mount" with "recognize".
Connect the drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit
    Click the Disks tab
Does the AirPort Extreme "recognize" your hard drive?  If yes, it will be displayed in the window.
See example below of a WD 500 GB drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
If your drive is formatted HFS+ and it does not appear here, then you will almost certainly need to use a powered USB hub with the hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.  The USB port on the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule is under powered.
Post back when the drive is "recognized" and we will next "mount" the drive.....although you likely already know how to do this.

I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • Seagate drive no longer found on Time Capsule

I've been doing my Time Machine back ups to a USB Seagate drive that is attached to my Time Capsule for over 7 months now.  Everything was formatted correctly  from the start and had been working great. Until yesterday when I got an alert from Time Machine saying I was over due for a back up.  I went through Finder to my Time Capsule and couldn't find the Seagate icon.  I thought that was weird and restarted my Time Capsule and MBP. Still no luck and I even went and restored my Time Capsule to factory settings and it still will not read that the Seagate drive that is plugged into the USB port. Any help or advice on the issue???
    Thanks,
    Steven

  • My new Time Capsule 2T 2013 doesn't see my Seagate External HDD

    Hi,
I am new MAC user recently converted from PC. I have a Macbook Air 2013 and the new time capsule 2013 as well.
I did connect my external HDD (i.e. 1.5T Seagate HDD) in the Time Capsule USB port.
I went into the utility Airport Application to make sure "File sharing box is checked".
I went in Finder to look for my HDD and no sign of it...
I read many many discussions looking for the answer on how to make my External HDD (previously used on my PC laptop) appear on my MacBook Air throught my home network, but without success. From Apple website, it seams to be an easy task...!
Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?
    I need some help please!
    Thanks in advance.
    FLTower.

Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?

It surely is at least a major factor.. maybe several are involved.
You cannot see a disk formatted NTFS.. ie standard windows format from TC.
The disk must be plugged into the Mac and open disk utility..
You need to change the partition over to GUID from MBR.. and change the format to Mac OS extended Journaled.. or HFS+
Although FAT32 is also supposed to work.. that will lead to other issues.. don't do it.
If you format a drive with data on it.. your data is gone.. just to make sure you know that.
You can plug the drive into the computer and copy the data to another location.. and then format the drive.. and copy it back.. if you have an air without the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter this will take aprox 1month to achieve.

  • I cannot get my seagate HDD to work correctly with Time Capsule USB

I have been using my seagate expansion 2tb powered HDD happily with itunes connected directly to my imac. i would like to move it to my TC via usb. it is having none of it. it is formatted using mac os extended (journaled) and it will only show up in airport utility. not in finder or anywhere. i have reformatted it to no avail. i have change the preferences to show everything in finder( i think) finder only comes up with 'data' on the TC which is the TCs internal HD. please help

Your 1.8 TB Seagate is not formatted as it contains NO partition.
Compare to the entry above: Drive is "Time Capsule Disk" Partition is "TC Data"
In Disk Utility it should look similar to this:
where 1TB STxxxxx is the Disk (Media) and "time machine" is the name of the usable partition.
Plug the disk to your computer
    Open Disk Utility
Choose the disk (click on it)
    Click on the Partition section
Under "Current Scheme" select the wanted partition scheme
    Under "Name" give a name.
(If you choose to create more than one partition on the disk , give every partition a name)
Under "Format" choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Click "Apply"
When the run is finished, eject the disk from Finder and plug again to the Time Machine.
After that you will find the drive (partition) also on Finder / Shares
