Time Capsule vs. WD MyBook Live 2TB External Home Network Drive

I ready to get my 1st iMAC - very excited. Still confused on Time Capsule if worth the difference in money - or a no brainer and a must have? My summary from reading is on paper the advantage are: Some advantages of the TC are:
(1) It also includes a very good WIFI router.
(2) It was specifically designed by Apple as a destination for TM backups.
(3) If you buy one within two years of also buying a Mac, and get AppleCare for the Mac, the TC is covered by AppleCare. Otherwise it has a one-year warranty.
WD Network 2TB goes for $150. I figure a router is ~$50-$80 bucks so is Time Capsule worth the $80-$100 more.
Looking to get feedback if it is must have or toss up based on specific need. BTW, router for me is bonus, but I have a router already. My guess is given it is designed by Apple and wireless, everything plays nice and easily detects it, etc...
Any feedback or insight is appreciated?

If you are thinking of mainly backing up with an iMac then you really don't need a "wireless backup device". A simple USB-drive that will take care of your Time Machine should do. TC, when connected to your Modem-router, can create a wireless Network with storage for you, and also has a USB interface that can connect to your printer. In your case, I am assuming that you do NOT need a wireless backup, you do NOT need a wireless network, as you may have a wireless router. Even if you don't, you will connect your iMac directly (wired) to your router anyway. Unless you NEED a wireless network, you really do not need time capsule or even WD Network storage. For the simple Time Machine backup, hook a normal USB drive to your iMac, which wil be connected to your wired router and off you go. This setup will only cost you max $100 for your USB drive, depending on its size.

Personally, I like the WD drives. Daughter has the half TB version of the drive and loves it...works seemlessly with her MBP.

So, I have just about had it. For nine days now, I have valiantly tried to move my library to an external drive. At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule, iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me.

At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule. iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me. So then there were two libraries. I meshed them back together reluctantly and iTunes in a silent revolt, absolutely refused to use its own 'Keep Library Organized' criteria and may as well have thrown my music against the wall. Seriously, my 5 year old nephew has his computer files better managed. Then I bought a 3TB Time Capsule and you may ask yourself why??? Well, iTunes doubled in size- although when I ran apps that are designed to find duplicate iTunes files, it deleted the music I actually bought from iTunes. So then I watched as iTunes got it back. How you ask; I run a MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in my house - as soon as one powered up it hit the net like a sailor on leave and re-downloaded it all without abandon. I tried to keep the libraries separate, no success there. I tried to keep them unified; iTunes response was to ask me if I wanted to join iTunes Match every time I logged on to my computer and on any computer - my iTunes match song number has been as high as 24,367 and as low as 11,112. And I can't simply refuse iTunes. No one refuses iTunes. Refusal to allow iTunes Match to run through all 24000 songs again was to revoke my rights to the songs that were once part of my library. If I took a long time to decide or was visibly impatient while iTunes did its little 3 hour scan it would arbitrarily decide that music I bought from iTunes was ineligible for iTunes Match. How could that possibly be??? I am missing music, or at least iTunes tells me so by showing me that lovely exclamation point. I have tried backing up my computer to do a full system restore and start all over. Time Capsule claims I have 979 GB of data and takes its sweet time to even back up one gig (about 18 minutes) even though I can transfer files to my Time Capsule at about 1 GB every 40 seconds. I guess though performing back-ups are somewhat like government jobs; it will get done, when it gets done. The back up requirement of 979 GB is surprising though, my Mac claims that I currently occupy just about 25% of my 2TB drive. The discrepancy, who knows, but I think the solution lies somewhere in iTunes. But maybe iPhoto. But that is for another time.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move. Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way. Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Anything that will play from Samba network file store..
You will probably also need filebrowser loaded on the ipad to find the files.
Is the ipad necessary btw.. ?? If you only want to play the file to your TV you can buy a WD Live TV.. unlike the Apple TV it is a media player.. and can play files of almost any format direct from the TC.

Mybook live 2TB non va mai in standby

Buongiorno a tutti, il mio problema è appunto, che il lmio mybook live 2TB non va mai in standby. Nonostante abbia impostato nel pannello di andare dopo 10 minuti di inattività, il disco ha sempre il led verde fisso e se va in standby, lo fa solo per pochi secondi, per poi tornare in attività. Ho letto su alcuni forum americani che potrebbero essere le foto all'interno dell'unità, ma non riesco a capire perchè.Inoltre volevo chiedere, se da wd quick view clicco chiudi sessione l'unità si spegne, ma come faccio a riaccenderla senza dover staccare e riattaccare la corrente, visto che una volta chiusa la sessione wd quick view non mostra più l'unità?Grazie e buona domenica.

Hi, spero con questa breve guida, a seguito di una serie di ragionamenti e test, di poterVi fornire una soluzione ad un noto problema che affligge il NAS MyBookLive di Western Digital, cioe' quello di non di passare MAI in Sleep Mode / StandBy dopo 10' di inattivita' (LED BLUE !). Seguitemi con attenzione : 1) Impostazione dell' indirizzo IP STATICO sul Router associato al MAC Address del MyBookLive (Numero facilmente acquisibile da Menu Impostazioni /Rete del MBL o dalla tabella indirizzi del Router/Switch), evitando inutili negoziazioni DHCP da parte del MBL, essendo lo stesso, presumibilmente statico e fisso in rete. 2) Impostazione della modalita' di indirizzo IP Statico (CheckBox nel Menu Impostazioni/Rete/Modalita' di Rete) 2a) Impostazione dell' indirizzo IP STATICO / IP NETMASK / IP GATEWAY / DNS nel Menu Impostazioni/Rete del MBL (I dati sono facilmente acquisibili nel menu di qualsiasi Router della Vs rete) 3) Disabilitazione nel Menu: Impostazioni/Sistema/Data e Ora del servizio NTP (Network Time Protocol) (smarcare la CheckBox), impostando poi sotto Data e Ora manualmente, evitando cosi' la trasmissione dell'HeartBeat in rete per l'aggiornamento dell'orologio.(per altro utile esclusivamente alla compilazione dei Log interni) 4) Parametrizzazione della modalita'/cadenza dell'aggiornamento automatico del Database del Twonky media Server residente nel MBL: Mediante l' applicazione TwonkyMedia Server Browser, nel Basic Setup/Sharing, modificare il valore numerico in basso, alla voce "Rescan In Minutes", impostando a " 0 " (zero) al posto del valore preimpostato " - 1 ". Si evita cosi' la ricostruzione automatica del database ad ogni aggiunta/cancellazione di files immagine, Video, Musica, o quant'altro si copii nel disco. Questo e' il vizio piu' grosso del TwonkyMediaServer, che tiene purtroppo sempre sveglio il disco. Chiaro che disabilitando Twonky si elude il problema.....ma un Media Server tutto sommato non e' male averlo.Un valore numerico positivo (che so, 1440, cioe' 24 Ore) indica in minuti primi la cadenza dell'aggiornamento del DB, cosa che 'risveglia' ovviamente l'unita' MBL senza un comando manuale dell'utente. Con il valore a Zero e' necessario manutenere reindicizzando ogni tanto il database, ma non e' un gran task .... 5) Modifica della modalita' di 'Accesso Remoto (WD2GO) nel Menu Impostazioni/Accesso Remoto, con impostazione su "Accesso Remoto" Attiva (casella marcata) e Manuale, con la conseguente automatica definizione delle due porte TCP (che MBL visualizza automaticamente subito sotto: 80 Http e 443 Https.Le stesse vanno entrambe associate all' IP Address del MBL) 5a) Se previsto, sul Router, non e' male DISABILITARE UPnP, dato che TwonkyMediaServer svolge gia' quella funzione e passeranno i dati trasparentemente dal Router senza che ne debba gestire localmente chiss' quale funzione...solo un collo di bottiglia. 5b) Personalmente ho disabilitato la funzione di gestione Host UPnP di Windows 7, (si trova sul WEB un'applicazione "unpnp.exe" per farlo in un click) e questa funzionalita' mi teneva 'sveglio' il NAS ad ogni accesso in rete del PC. Inoltre ci sono sul WEB una serie di raccomandazioni relative a sicurezza in merito. 5c) Impostare (Importante) il 'TCP/UDP Port Forward' sul Router per le porte 80 (HTTP) e 443 (HTTPS) e il MacAddress del MyBookLive. Alcuni Routers hanno gia' questa impostazione e bisogna solo associare quei numeri di 'Porta TCP' al Mac Address del MBL.Questa operazione elimina qualsiasi 'polling' automatico di apertura e mantenimento delle porte TCP per gestire l'accesso da remoto (WD2GO) Tutta questa procedura puo' apparire complessa, e leggendo qua e la' nei Forum di settore si nota che il problema ha creato a moltissima gente non pochi mal di testa, ma la soluzione pare efficace. Un TV con DLNA Media Client OVVIAMENTE potrebbe svegliare il dispositivo MBL, in quanto se ha acceduto anche solo una volta il Server in Rete, e' stato registrato dal TwonkyMediaServer, che rappresenta il processo piu' 'indisciplinato' all'interno del MBL, e, col compito di 'servire' i propri 'clients' noti, si attiva. (ma potrei dire qualcosa di impreciso e non mi spingo oltre) Spero di aver fatto cosa gradita e saluto i membri di questo utile Forum./R PS: Non sarebbe male che il supporto di Western Digital specificasse all'interno delle Guide Utente, le procedure che potenzialmente provocano la mancata sospensione del disco (Sleep Mode/ StandBy) , ma dato che sto riscontrando lamentele che cominciano nel 2011, non mi aspetto alcun intervento... Se me lo concedete, vorrei invitare ad evitare di fornire suggerimenti inutili come quello che ho letto in questo forum, qui poco sopra. Prima di fornire consigli bisognerebbe dotarsi di un minimo di conoscenza dei prodotti e delle loro tecnologie. How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive? Is this even possible? I had a friend tell me it woudl be a good set up to get a time capsule with my Macbook Air to use as a gigantic external hard drive but then was unbale to wlak me through the setup after I bought the equipment. Any suggestions?

Connection sharing.. select off bridge mode in the drop down box.
You can then if you like turn off wireless under airport wireless.. The TC is now a plain network client with hard disk.
Personally I would keep the wireless on but sort the channels manually if you already have a wireless AP or router.

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.

If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

Time Capsule won't connect to internet at home but works at Apple Store. Internet connection is fine through ethernet - any ideas?

A few days ago my Time Capsule stopped connecting to the internet at home. My internet connection is fine when I connect directly via ethernet. However when I plug the ethernet into the Time Capsule, it doesn't progress past the solid amber light. Doing a hard reset doesn't do anything. I took it to the Genius Bar two seperate times, and both times they were able to get it working there, but when I get it home it won't work. Any ideas of what the problem might be?

Try resetting your broadband modem. Depending on the model of modem, that can be as easy as removing power for a few moments. If that doesn't work, remove power and wait 15 minutes. Further reset steps can involve pressing a "reset" button or removing a battery if the modem has one. In the worst case, your ISP may need to edit its settings to update to the MAC address of the new router. If they won't or can't do that, powering down the modem for 16 to 36 hours can reset the connection.

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

You have a 1st Generation Time Capsule.
Your model can produce two bands....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....but not both simultaneously.
You would need a Generation 2, 3 or 4 Time Capsule for simultaneous dual band capability.
