Time capsule wifi signal and possible extension by airport extreme

Hi all,
I recently got a TC to replace my speed touch dsl modem/router as I thought the TC is much better. Unfortunately to my surprise, the wifi signal of the TC seems to be less powerful + Internet is more slow. I wonder if I have some settings that are not quite correct. I wrecked my brain over the net looking for settings and everything seems correct. Any ideas on this issue?
Anyway, I am now considering either an airport extreme or airport express to extend the coverage. My questions are:
1. Is the wifi signal of airport extreme, airport express and time capsule the same or one is more powerful than others?
2. I'm thinking of getting an airport extreme to be the main wifi hub (ie the adsl modem would be connected to it) and putnthe TC downstairs to extend the signal. With this in mind I would connect it to a western digital tv live and stream videos.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Kind regards
Aldo

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

  • Setting up time capsule on a secure subnet of an airport extreme

I've currently got an airport extreme and a time capsule. I'd like to set up the time capsule on a secure subnet of the airport extreme. e.g.:
Modem -> Airport Extreme (WPA 2 enabled) -via ethernet> Time Capsule (separate subnet invisible to Airport Extreme users)
I have a group of housemates that need to access the network over the airport extreme, but I don't want to open up my backups on the Time Capsule to network attack.
    Any reccomendations would be welcome.

    Welcome to the discussions, arbee!
    1) Connecting to the Time Capsule for setup. MUST I use Airport Utility or is there another method?
AirPort Utility is the only application available to configure the Time Capsule
    2) Does the Time Capsule router (Airport Extreme, I assume) support PPPoE?
During setup, you specify how you would like the device to connect, Ethernet or PPPoE
    3) I assume I can continue to let both machines connect using DHCP.
    Yes
    4) Do I need to specifically assign addresses to the wireless network or will the Time Capsule router do that automatically?
The Time Capsule will automatically assign each wired or wireless device a network IP address

  • AE Time Capsule WiFi signal issues now??

    Hi folks,
I bought the new AE Time Capsule when it first came out X number of months ago.
I live in a small townhouse and never had any issues previously with my WiFi signal, even when I had just the AE base station. I noticed though over the past few days, it seems like one of my Airport Express will lose its WiFi signal and it is literally 15 feet from my AETC. Now using Google Chromecast that is less than 50 feet away from my AETC, the Chromecast device shows a 2 bar wifi signal instead of 4. I haven't moved anything and the only new updates in our house is iOS7 on our iPads, and iPhones.
This past Sunday I know our Google Chromecast couldn't find the Chromecast device, which I know is a Google product. The reason for my posting here, then I noticed 1 of our AE being offline, while the other 2 seemed fine. I did swap out our cable modem from a Dlink modem to a Motorola SB6141 cable modem. Now last night, I also noticed our Belkin WeMo devices could not be found. Not sure what is going on, seems like only the past few days we are having WiFi issues... Is there something going on intermittently from the iOS7 upgrade?
Something is going on??????? Please let me know your thoughts. When I reset the AETC everything seemed fine for a little while, everything came back online. However it seems last night (Monday night), the Belkin WeMo devices were taking a long time to populate. So I am having issues with our WiFi overall in our home using Apples AE, Belkins WeMo devices (we only have the plug switches) and Google Chromecast. The common item is all of these devices are wireless connections.

I just wanted to confirm I had similar issues.  I am running a new AE router (tower model).  I have 2 WiFi networks in my house.  One runs off the AE and the other off a Netgear running DD-WRT (sharing the same broadband connection).  In recent weeks, my WeMo devices (total of 3) have not been displaying appropriately in the app.  Sometimes 1, 2, 3 or none.  WeMo and iPhone all on same AE network.  If I turn off WiFi on my iPhone and use 3G,all devices appear.
I tried turning off my Netgear network and running everything through the AE and still no sucsess.
So, I have recently turned off my AE and gone back to my Netgear DD-WRT.  I have had no issues now with my Wemo devices.
I haven't had enough time to track this down any further but just thought I would share my experience.

  • My Time Capsule WiFi connection and internet connection issue

My Time Capsule WiFi connection to other devices works fine, but for some reason it can not connect to the internet only when "it feels like it",it will go in and out showing that its connect (green dot on airport utilities) then literaly the next second it disconnected (showing a yellow dot on airport utility) and it does that continuesly sometimes it stops doing for a couple of hours. I basically did every thing like reseting it, unplugging wait for what ever time, and it still does the same thing. i do have ethernet cable connect to the Time Capsule. Also sometimes my airport utilities say it cant find my Time Capsule (rarely) . So obviously i dont have a clue whats going on. PLEASE HELP

You have an issue with the local network. Pings to your local network device should be in the order of 5-10ms tops..
Look at your first line.. 2293ms that is over 2sec for the local router to respond.. but it is likely that little box that is the problem. You will get some websites simply time out if they take that long to respond.
Let me recommend you either get some help from ATT or get a local technician to fix it. There are other better ways to connect things.. in the end getting it cabled with ethernet is the best. Buy a long long ethernet cable if you want to have a test.. so you can plug the TC into the modem. Bypass the HPNA over cable slug.

  • Time Capsule connectivity drops on extended network with Airport Extreme

I have a new Airport Extreme router as the main router in my network and a Time Capsule set to extend the 2.4Ghz network. The routers must be configured in this order because I want the 5Ghz network from the Extreme to cover my main seating area.
The problem I have is that while I'm connected to the Extreme, on either the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network, the connection to the Time Capsule will 'drop'. The network drive within the Time Capsule will no longer be available and the AirPort Utility no longer shows the Time Capsule. If I reboot the Extreme, the Time Capsule will reappear.
Also, when the connection drops, if I were to move within the primary range of the Time Capsult and connect to the 2.4Ghz network, it will connect flawlessly and I would have access to the Time Capsule and it's resources. It is only access through to the Time Capsule through the Extreme that is no longer available.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Both routers work flawlessly otherwise. I'm fairly certain there isn't a hardware problem here. I've gone through all the configuration settings multiple times and can't find anything that could affect this. I have the latest firmware for both routers and the latest AirPort utility.
One thing to note is that the Time Capsule is a North American unit, while the Extreme is from Hong Kong. I know there are slight differences regarding the wireless channels that both can use, but I don't think this is an issue since the Time Capsule maintains proper internet connectivity the whole time. If it was a channel issue, I'd expect the Time Capsule to lose internet access when this issue arrises.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

7.4.2 firmware does NOT resolve this problem.
I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

  • Time Capsule wifi signal suddenly fades with distance

My Time Capsule's wifi signal has suddenly started fading the farther I am from the box. If my Macbook Air is in the room with it, the signal is fine. But suddenly, if I'm two rooms over, the signal is very slow -- much too slow to stream video, for example. This is a relatively recent problem. I tried downgrading the firmware from 7.6.3 to 7.6.1 on the advice of someone on these boards but that hasn't helped. Any ideas?

After you downgrade the firmware. do a full factory reset of the TC.
Then redo the setup from scratch.. give it fully SMB compatible names,, short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Eg TC name.. TC
    Wireless name for 2.4ghz TC24ghz
Wireless name for 5ghz TC5ghz (yes, set a different name in options for this)
Do not hide the wireless name.
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character password is usually enough. pure alphanumeric of course.
Now the important bit. Test using fixed wireless channels.. 11, 6, 1 in that order for 2.4ghz.
5ghz is probably useless from 2 rooms away, but set to the lowest channel, 36 or 40.. will work better.
It is only because you have had it change that I recommend it.. otherwise I would say get something to extend wireless or more powerful. See  how the above goes.. and give us actual numbers.. in the airport icon on the top right hold the option key when you click it and you will get signal level.
If you want more info the older v5 utility is far more useful as it will give you logging of wireless signals.
All logging access is totally removed from v6 toyland utility.
So install v5 which is possible by a trick on Mountain Lion.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Strength of Time Capsule WiFi Signal

    Dear Friends,
I am using time capsule model A1409.
In my opinion, the WiFi signal is not strong.
In my office with the range about 10 meter with some office obstacle like wall partition from gypsum / calc not a brick partition, my mac book air can not get the WiFi signal from time capsule.
Actually how much is the range coverage of tiome capsule signal?
How to adjust the power of WiFi signal transmisiion from time capsule.
    Thank you.
    Regards, Andreas

I agree.. it is very average.
10M through enough walls.. especially in an office with metal filing cabinets and shelves can be worse than bricks..
Power is by default 100% .. there is no way to turn it up.
Make sure your region is set correctly.
Apple intend you to buy Expresses to extend the wireless..
In an office I would use ethernet and locate the TC near where the wireless is needed.. if you need more wireless power, use ubiquiti..
When you go into the Apple store next time.. ask what wireless they use.. (hint.. it is not apple routers).

  • Repeat time capsule wifi signal

    Hi,
I have a TimeCapsule that I've setup as a Wifi hotspot in bridge mode.
The TC is connected to the router with an ethernet wire and the router has no Wifi activated.
However the TC's Wifi signal is not powerful enough and I'd like to repeat it using a Linksys WRE54G that I already own.
Will that work, and how do I need to configure the Linksys repeater to make it work (IP address, mask and gateway).
Should I use the IP adress of the TC as the gateway address?
    Thanks for your help.

This discussion is pretty close to what you want to do.  The answer is probably no.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/23324301#23324301

  • Time Capsule in a Dual Band Network using Airport Extreme (N) and (2) AE

I need help and step by step directions to configure my TC in a Dual Band Network. Currently, I have my TC set up in a Create Network mode using 5Mhz and my AE (n) set up to establish a WDS and my AE (2) set up as WDS.
Everything works but my AE constantly blinks amber and I can't use my TC as a backup drive on anything but my Macbook and iMac. My 2 powerbooks (G4) can't back up to the TC. I am using Leopard 10.5.2 and airport utility 5.3.1.
I use one of my AEs to connect a vista pc to my network by ethernet (it works) and the other AE in my family room to connect to my Toshiba HD DVD by ethernet (it works).
Please help I must be missing something otherwise my AE wouldn't be blinking.

double click the blinking one in the utility and see if it tells you why its amber...WDS error?

  • Time Capsule WiFi Connection Issues. Help please.

I'm hoping someone might have some ideas about what could have caused a connection problem I've had since this morning.
So I setup a WiFi network with Time Capsule a couple of weeks ago in order to do back ups and set up wirless printing but I was told I needed to put my wireless modem into Bridge Mode. So this morning I did that, rebooted the modem as instructed, made sure all power connections and the LAN connection between Time Capsule and my modem were securely connected. On my Mac I was able to log on to my Time Capsule WiFi network and access the internet (there was no wired connection to my Mac, I definitely connected through the WiFi), but I was unable to even log in to the network with my iPhone, Apple TV nor with my daughter's laptop. Only my Mac was able to connect. I downloaded Airport Utility and checked every setting to see if I need to share or enable other connections, I couldn't see anything.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm not overy tech savvy although hands on I can usually figure things out fairly well and get them working but this has me stumped.

I presume it worked fine for the two weeks..
    until
but I was told I needed to put my wireless modem into Bridge Mode.
And that messed things up.. because you are now in the wrong setup on the TC.
I have to say.. a. what you were told ain't necessarily so.
And b. having messed up your existing setup.. need to change the setup of the TC so it will work.
I am not sure what modem router you have .. or what or how it works in bridge.. but guessing from your current settings..
You need to reset the TC to factory and start over.
The TC must be in router mode.. whereas with the previous setup it should have been in bridge mode.
You will find these settings on the Network tab.. in the utility.
I am just not sure if the internet should be dhcp or something else, ie pppoe, and that will depend on the modem.
I would also note there is absolutely nothing wrong with the setup you did have until you were talked out of it.
The modem can work as router with wireless on or off depending on the network.. and use the TC in bridge mode. It would create a wireless network and can be used for all your items just as well.

  • HT4259 This article is outdated (as well as others). I have Airport Extreme (latest) and Time Capsule (earlier version) and newest Airport Utility version.

I have difficulty in setting up the newest Airport Extreme with Time Capsule. How to wire Time Capsule over ethernet is so confusing and the documentation I found is outdated.

    OK, thanks for the clarification.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable if it is plugged into the Time Capsule at this time.
With the Time Capsule powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 9-10 seconds and then release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
This will not affect any backups that you might have already stored on the Time Capsule.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule. I assume that you have tested the Ethernet cable independently to make sure that it is working correctly.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on Time Capsule.  The screenshot below shows an AirPort Express.....you will see Time Capsule on your screen.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Time Capsule will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule. You can use the same name that you used before, then click Next.
Now AirPort Setup will indicate that the Time Capsule is being configured to extend using Ethernet. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.  That's it.

  • Mackeeper has detected a virus in the time capsule back up - it is not possible to dele - it ite the file. Do I find time capsule in finder and delete the whole computer back up, then crate a fresh back up? Is that the only solution please?

mackeeper has detected a virus in the time capsule backup, it is not possible to delete the infected file. Do I mount time capsule in finder and then consign to junk the whole computer backup then create a fresh backup? Is that the only solution please.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage. The overwhelming majority of Macs I come across have the MacKeeper installer file already present in their Downloads folder, often multiple copies of it. The downloaded file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper - not to be confused with MacKeeper) will prevent that from occurring.

Suppose it is a compatibility issue of iphone4s and TP-link router?
I already suffered the iphone4S face time drop off issue for more than 2 week…  Hope it can be fixed soon….

I agree with @sabretooth. The connection status showing 100Mbps is only the local Ethernet network speed and since your router uses the Wireless-G technology, then you can get a maximum of 54Mbps for the wireless network speed. This network speed is significant when communicating within the local network of the router but it is still the 10Mbps internet subscription speed that is used when sending and receiving data or information through the internet.
It seems you’re experiencing a dropping connection and it would be better to isolate the issue before buying another router. Connect a computer wired directly to your Arris modem and observe the connection. If connection is good then it will give you a hint that it’s a possible router issue. You can then press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds, power cycle, reconfigure the internet connection and check if the problem persists.

  • Can I have my Time Capsule wifi and my Verizon router wifi on at the same time?

I want to have my verizon wifi on at the same time as my time capsules wifi but I don't know if it interfere.  There's an app that you can use as a remote for your cable box but you need to be on your routers wifi.
    Thanks,
    Zach

Suggest that you run a few speed checks on both wireless networks with a computer in same room as the wireless router using a site like www.speedtest.net on your browser.
If you are getting close to your plan speeds, then you likely do not have interference issues.
Most routers will scan to find the best available channel to use, so assuming that your equipment is working OK, things should be OK. Try to keep the Verizon router and Time Capsule at least 6-8 feet, or a few meters from each other.
This assumes that you are not living in a crowded situation like an apartment complex, where intereference is pretty much a fact of life due to the very limited number of wireless channels that are available.

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.
