Time capsule: will it work wirelessly without disrupting my wireless system?

Time capsule: will it work wirelessly without disrupting my wireless system?

This type of setup is difficult, and not officially supported by Apple for good reason.
Before you attempt this, you should know that this type of setup will require a "double hop" wireless connection for backups.
In other words, for your Mac to back up, the wireless signal must travel from your Mac to your wireless router......hop one.....and then travel from the wireless router to the Time Capsule....hop two.
This doubles the chances of an error occurring and unfortunately also doubles the amount of time that it will take for a backup to occur.
I've tried this type of setup a few times as an experiment. It gives new meaning to word "SLOW".
In addition, the Ethernet ports are disabled in this type of setup on the Time Capsule, so it is not possible to use them for any purpose.
Bottom line....the fact that the Time Capsule can possibly be configured this way.....does not in any way imply that it should be configured this way.

That doesn't sound right. Read and follow Canon's instructions carefully. It seems that configuring it via USB will cause your computers to expect it connected that way. If you want to use it wirelessly be sure you follow instructions for that method and ignore instructions for connection via USB.
I installed the driver's and software, I followed the instructions, it searched for my network, I wasn't sure if I should select "WPA or WPA 2" so I tried both.
it asked me to type in my network password but I had forgotten it so I selected "guest network" I then unplugged the printer from the computer, it said that the wireless connection was good but it still won't print.
I don't have a wifi card in my computer, would that make any difference? Under Print & Fax my Canon printer is listed there.
I'm confused about this. If you're trying to communicate wirelessly, your computer needs to be wireless.
You need to go about this more methodically. Your network name, password, encryption type, etc must all be 100% correct, all of it. If you've forgotten one or more of these parameters, you'll probably want to reset your network hardware and start all over again.

  • My Time Capsule will not work through Time Machine but need to back up because my hard drive is corrupt. I hard-wired it to my MacBook Pro and have been dragging files to capsule in finder window. Will I have problems since it's flashing yellow constantly

My Time Capsule is constantly flashing yellow and it will not preform periodic back-ups. When I tell it to from the icon on the top task bar, it freezes MacBook...every time. I am now dragging files from internal HD to TC found in Finder after hardwiring it to laptop treating it as an external HD.  Can in trust it to store files and photos as my MacBook is telling me to back-up because my internal HD is corrupt and may need replacing?
    Thanks in advance.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • My time capsule will only work with one device at a time

I just purchased the Airport time capsule.  I have it set up with my imac, but I also run a macbook air, older macbook, PC laptop, PC desktop, wii, xbox, and 3 iphones off of this device.  My issue is that my ISP does not serve more than 1 IP address and with previous routers, the IP address they recognized was only on my router.  Now, each time a new device tries to use the internet, my ISP is bypassing time capsule and recognizing the device IP address.  It's very frustratitng!  How do I set up my Time Capsule so that it's IP address is the only one my ISP recognizes, but all my devices are able to run off of the Time Capsule as the router.  (obviously I am not over educated in this area so solutions in simple language are greatly appreciated!) Thanks!

I read the same solution somewhere else in the forum but it does not solve my problem.  When I set up the Airport, it sets up in bridge mode by default. When I contacted my ISP they said it needed to be in bridge mode (their rationale is that they only allow 1 IP address).  I just switched it to DHCP and NAT and this is what the default settings go to:
After I update it with these settings my internet won't work at all and this is the error message I get:
    Any suggestions?
My internet "Digis". www.digis.net.  They are a smaller company and put a dish on my roof.  The modem is very small, does not have a router.

Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

2nd Gen Time Capsule - will not power up - just stopped working all of a sudden - I have tried other power outlets - I have tried pressing the reset button - no light

The power supply is shot. But that it lasted even this long is the wonder.. not that it died.
    The TC runs too hot..
Look on ebay for "Time Capsule power supply"
You can get a replacement and fix it although the economics are not so good.. it is probably time for a new TC.
If you can DIY it is really only a few dollars worth of capacitors that go bad.

  • If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?

If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?

Erasing the Time Capsule's internal HDD, via the AirPort Utility, will NOT affect the TC's configuration settings. However, if your intent is to completely remove these settings as well, you will want to perform a "factory default" reset on the TC to do so.
If you first export the configuration, you can always import it back in after the reset to get you back up and running quickly.

  • My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi

Following a question solved on March 24 by LaPastenague, but gone bad again.
    Apple AirPort Time Capsule
I felt the need for a physical backup of my data, as I would not completely trust the different clouds. I use, and have used Dropbox for 4-5 years and are very satisfied with that, but I am still not sure if or when a political lunatic will shut off the internet.
I purchased the Apple AP Time Capsule 2T, because all my other stuff are Apple, and that it's wireless. My old backup is Maxtor 300 GB.
Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

I can deal with the last question first and easily.
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.

  • Installing Time capsule with U-Verse Wireless Network

    Hi all,
I am not a techy, but I get by. I am going to install the Time Capsule and I realized that I don't think this will work with my existing U-Verse Fiber wireless network. After some thought, I believe I should just use this for wireless backup and peripheral operations rather than the internet as my current wifi also operates the televisions in the house.
I'm hoping to get some guidance from the community as to how to use this device without having to purchase more equipment or re-wiring my entire home. Can I just plug it in and use it for wireless backup or will it interfere with my internet service (which I am happy with)?
    Any thoughts?

    Welcome to the discussions!
You are correct to allow your existing setup handle internet connections.
The simplest setup would be to configure your Time Capsule to "Join" the wireless network created by the U-Verse router. Your computers will be able to backup via wireless assuming that you have a good connection.
If your U-Verse router provides ethernet ports for devices (it likely does), you would also have the option of connecting the Time Capsule to the U-Verse router with an ethernet cable. This would make sense if the Time Capsule will be located near the U-Verse router as ethernet is both faster and more reliable than wireless.
Not to get too technical here, but if you connect the TC this way, you will set Connection Sharing on the TC for "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If you connect the Time Capsule via ethernet, you would also have the option to setup the Time Capsule to "create" its own wireless network. So, you would have two wireless networks available...one created by the U-Verse router and the other created by the Time Capsule.
If you have computers capable of wireless connections at "n" speeds, they could connect to the Time Capsule and your other "g" devices would connect to the U-Verse. In fact, if you purchase a new dual band TC, it will be capable of creating two wireless networks on its own.
So, you have a number of options available. Just depends on how simple or complex you want things to be.

I use a DSL to connect to the internet. The modem is a Westell C90-810030-06. Two things happened in connection with the fail. I upgraded the firmware in both my Time Capsule (connected to the DSL) and the Airport Extreme (connected to my printer--used to extend the network). I also upgraded my Colof Nook to the Android Faux Tablet version. I can't imagine that that is creating some sort of mismatch.
I have now downgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule to 7.4.1 which is what I had before. Fortunately, I found the trick to downloading the older airport utility to find the older firmware. All the older versions disappeared from my computers.
I still have the same problem. Wifi works fine. If a second device connects to the wifi, then it works fine, but the first no longer has a connection.
And my Airport Extreme is not working at all. It cannot be seen by the computer. I tried resetting it. I'm going to connect it by ethernet and downgrade the firmware on it.
I appreciate any help. This is so frustrating.

  • Time Capsule connecting to a Wireless Booster.

Hello, my first post on the boards and am also a Mac newbie.
I'm a recent Mac convert and pretty much have all the kit now. Previously I was using my T/C as a wireless network and backup device. I had an ethernet connection and everything worked fine.....
I'm currently deployed in Southern Iraq and my new location doesn't have an Ethernet connection. I'm writing this on my work Laptop using a Light Wave USB wireless booster as my room is too far way from the router.
I have two problems I would like to fix if possible.
1)I would like to set up my Mac to use the booster however the Mac wont run the CD that came with the USB booster so I can use it as my internet connection. Is there a way to install a driver on Mac to make this work?
    2) I understand that the USB port on the Time Capsule will not allow USB modems so I assume that the booster will not work directly. If I can get an adaptor that will turn the USB into an ethernet connection, is it possible to install a driver on the T/C to use the booster to draw the internet from the wireless network?

Hello lovey80. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
1)I would like to set up my Mac to use the booster however the Mac wont run the CD that came with the USB booster so I can use it as my internet connection. Is there a way to install a driver on Mac to make this work?
One option would be to get someone else to download the driver for you, and then, connect both devices using an Ethernet crossover cable to transfer the file to your Mac Pro.
    2) I understand that the USB port on the Time Capsule will not allow USB modems so I assume that the booster will not work directly. If I can get an adaptor that will turn the USB into an ethernet connection, is it possible to install a driver on the T/C to use the booster to draw the internet from the wireless network?
Sorry, but this just wouldn't work. The TC does (natively) allow it to join another wireless network, but only as a client. It can also extend another wireless network ... but only one created by another TC or AirPort.

  • Time Capsule doesn't work with proxy?

Hello! I have a Time Capsule working with an ethernet connection which is controled by a proxy server. I don't see the option to configure TC in order to download the .pac file, or to configure manually the proxy settings.
Therefore, the internet through TC doesn't work!
    Anyone knows a solution?
    Thanks

The blurb about Time Capsule not being compatible with some ISPs is no different from the same blurb that Apple has attached to the specs of all previous Airport base station products. So... if your ISP currently works with an older model Base Station, it will work with Time Capsule. ISPs that typically don't work are ones that use uncommon DSL communications or authentication protocols - often found in parts of Europe and the Middle East.
(Speculation on my part) Time Capsule will not function as a wireless client on an existing wireless network. Therefore, users of an existing wireless network will need to either (a) replace their existing wireless router with Time Capsule or (b) cable Time Capsule to their existing wireless router and disable the router built into Time Capsule. These are exactly the same options faced by previous purchasers of Apple's Airport base stations.

  • Time Capsule will not reset - just flashes yellow

I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that will not reset - it just flashes yellow.
I have tried all the various reset options, left the unit uplugged overnight and all I get is a blinking yellow light.
Via airport the only option that I see is to set up a wireless network, there is no configuration window for the time capsule. I am not using this a wireless device, I have a comcast modem for that. It is being used for backup only.
When I select time machine under system settings, I can see the drive. I can select it but it will not accept the password. I have verified that I am using the correct password from the keychains utility.
I don't know if this is related, but I named the capsule TMBackUp and it shows that name in disk selection list, but when I select to use it for backups and it asks for the password (which does not work) it says, Enter your password for the server "Time Capsule d629db" so that Time Machine can access it. I don't know if the name differenc is even relevant, but thought I should mention it.
I really suspect that it has something to do with the ip address. Up until recently I have had ip addresses that were similar to 192.x.x.x, now I have ip addresses that are similar to 10.0.0.x. I just resolved an issue that this ip change was causing with two tivo units. So I assume the issue with the time capsule is something similar. My problem is that I see no interface with the time capsule to check the ip address that it has been assigned.
I am willing to wipe everything to start over, I just can't figure out how to get there.
I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer.
    Thank you.

I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that will not reset - it just flashes yellow.
The Time Capsule will flash amber when it has been reset. This is normal. A reset takes the Time Capsule back to its original factory default settings.
This is what you have done.
You will need to set up the Time Capsule again just like you did when you originally installed it on your network.
You can use the same name for the Time Capsule and passwords that you used previously, if you wish.
You do not need to "wipe" the Time Capsule hard drive. Your backups will continue from their previous point once you have the Time Capsule reconfigured to operate on your network.
