Time Capsule--Wireless suddenly quit working

My Time Capsule had always worked perfectly, but suddenly my wireless access from any device has quit working. My DSL is working fine, and the router and backup portions of the TC seem to be working. I tried a hard reset, updating to the latest version of Airport Utility and Firmware, and it still doesn't work. My laptop sees the network, but when I type in the password and try to connect, I get a connection time out.
Is there anything else to try, or do I assume it's broken?

Do a factory reset.. if the TC still will not pass IP addresses it is indeed faulty.. I get the idea it has swapped modes for some unknown reason. Anyway give it a try.. no luck and Apple will replace it.

When I switch my time capsule to 5.0ghz mode the range of my wireless network drops significantly.  Near the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro works fine, in my bedroom I have almost no signal.  In mixed mode it works fine both placed.  Any ideas on how to get 5.0 working?  I thought 5.0Ghz was supposed to have a wider range.  Do I need to change a setting on the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks, W

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

  • Time capsule wireless router will not work

I have a Time Capsule that I use as a wireless router in my condo.  Our internet company was recently purchased by another company, and after the transition, I am not able to connect to internet wirelessly.  My condo is wired with active ethernet ports.  If I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, I am able to log in to the ISP's main page and connect to the internet without any problems.  However, if I plug my ethernet cable into the Time Capsule as I did before, I cannot connect.  Before the company bought the old company, I didn't have any issues.  I've called their Tech Support 3 different times about this and they tell me they don't provide support for my wireless routers because there are so many different types.  They suggested resetting the router password, but I'm not completely sure how to do that.  Is that different than my airport password?
I should also note, that if I pull up System Preferences and to the "assist me" feature under the Network option, it tells me that I'm connected.
Any help you can provide would be fantastic!  I'm at my wits end with this issue, as I connect a number of devices to my Time Capsule wirelessly.
    Regards,
    Jake

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Time Capsule wireless problem

recently my TC which as been working fine, lost its wireless connection. I went back to the factory default settings and reset the entire system. My laptop "sees" the TC right away in Airport Utility but cannot read the configuration profile (times out). If I plug in an ethernet cord from the TC to my laptop everything works just fine. As soon as I unplug, nothing. Obviously, I am not getting a wireless signal from the TC.
I unplugged the Airport Express unit I have b/c I was concerned about interference. I also reverted to 7.3.2 from the newer version.
I have restarted the TC repeatedly with no improvement.

Hi mmcb and welcome to the discussions.
Sorry, I can't quite follow your description, so apologies if you have already tried this. Have you tried connecting the ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on the TC to try to configure or re-configure it using AirPort Utility?
As you describe, it does sound like you do not have wireless set up on the TC.
When you have Airport Utility open, click on Manual Setup at the lower left of the pane. On the next window, click the Airport Icon at the top of the pane. Then click the Wireless tab in the next line below that reads Summary - Time Capsule - Wireless-Access.
Check to make sure that the Wireless Mode is set to "Create a Wireless Network". You should see your wireless network name, radio settings security, and password. If not, you need to reconfigure them. See if that helps.

  • My MBP doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep

My MBP (OS 10.5.8) doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep.  Thus, every time my MBP wakes from sleep, I need to select the Airport icon in the upper menu bar, select "Join other network", enter SSID and password.  This is very cumbersome.  And, I never had this problem when I was using the ISP's provided wireless router/gateway/DSL modem. Adding the Time Capsule and using it to generate the wireless network has introduced this problem.
It appears that this problem has to do with the hidden SSID.  I don't need the lecture on how hidden SSID provides no serious security benefit.  That's why I have the WPA2 encryption.  I'm interested in a solution that will allow the Time Capsule to generate the wireless network, maintain a hidden SSID, continue to use WPA2 encryption, but have my MBP recognzie and autoconnect to this network.
    Solutions I've alread tried:
    1. Open Network Preferences
    2. Select Airport from left hand column (and ensure Airport is at top of that list)
    3.  Select Advanced
    4.  Delete all Preferred Networks.
    5.  Apply settings.
    6.  Restart computer
    7.  Return to Network Preferences and from Advanced page, manually add my network with hidden SSID and WPA2 password
This solution works fine as long as I don't take my computer elsewhere and connect to another network.  As soon as my preferred networks list gets another network, my MBP stops finding my TC network.  Since I take my laptop to a lot of places (it's a laptop, after all...) this is a problem.
As I say, prior to adding the TC on my network (and using it to generate the wireless network), my MBP had no problem keeping 50+ preferred network names/passwords in the Preferred Network list, but always automatically finding/connecting to my home network without the need to "Join other network."  Thus, I assume the problem lies with the Time Capsule.
    Any ideas?

LaPastenague, thanks for weighing in.  Didn't know that the hidden SSID capability was not IEEE standardized, and thus different devices will handle hidden SSID differently.  With my admittedly limited knowledge of how SSID/hidden SSID works, I'm still a little confused as to why my MBP would remember the generic router/gateway's hidden network, but struggle with the TC's hidden network.
To my knowledge, when an SSID is broadcast by a base station (Airport, wireless gateway, etc.), a connecting device (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) detects this broadcast--this would be a passive reception of this SSID signal.
When an SSID is hidden, the base station does not broadcast its identification.  Rather, a connecting device must transmit the name, and when the base station recognizes the broadcast, the connection is made. That's what you do when you select "Join another network" and manually enter the SSID.
The idea with OS X's Network Preferences is that these steps, whether for hidden networks or broadcast SSIDs, become automated.
Where is the potential for a different chipset between the TC and the previously used wireless router/gateway to alter this functionality?  Shouldn't the selection of an SSID by the MBP to broadcast to seek for a base station be a function solely on the MBP?  And once broadcast by the MBP, the TC should detect and reply?
Basically, the MBP can connect to the hidden TC manually just fine.  The MBP can connect to the old setup automatically just fine.  The MBP cannot connect to the TC automatically.  Aren't these automatic connection functions solely on the MBP?
I'll try un-hiding the network and re-verifying that the problem is exclusively with the hidden network.

  • Problem with Time Capsule Wireless Network...

I have Time Capsule over a year and it worked fine with Xfinity Modem. Recently, Xfinity had upgraded modems to Wireless router and I have ARRIS TG862 from them. I was able to set up wireless network using bridge mode on my Time Capsule and it all worked fine for a while.
My set up is: Arris Router is conected to Time Capsule thru ethernet connection. I have two more Airport Express in different areas of the house (one in Theater room and one in upstair office). I have conncted one port of Time Capsule to linksys switch which is supplying connection for all wired devices on network.
Last week, our wirless network stopped working and I rebooted router and TC. Still no resolution. I went ahead and set up the TC to factory settings but forgot to plug out all the network connections from it. I reconfiugred Apple TC with same wireless network name and same network settings. Most of the wired devices are connecting fine and two of the iphones and Macbook Pro won't connect. iphones, seems to be getting IP address but won't connect to interent. My windows laptop says connected to "EAGLE" my wireless network but "EAGLE 2" provides internet connection. I have reset my TC to factory defaults and reset same way so many times but still same results. I called Comcast and asked them to turn off wireless in their router thinking that router is creating a second wireless network but I still have the same issue.
Any suggestions on how should I set up my TC? I think, it went insane..............:(
Should I set up TC with a brand New wireless network Name to resolve this issue?
I have 7.6.4 version on TC.
I thought I knew, but what's the right procedure to set up TC? Plugged in the router and unplug from everything else and connected thru an ethernet connection to my laptop?
I have wasted so much time on this with the same results every time.
I did unplug all the network connections from TC and reset to factory defualts and set up my wireless again but same results.
Can someone please help me with this? Thanks in advance.

What is the model of the TC? The actual number.. A1xxx from the base of the TC is important.
When you have a modem router.. then the TC must be in bridge mode.. and create a wireless network.
Your names are not yet windows compatible.. please use all names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Fixing names is important part of this.
But the latest firmware 7.6.4 is also troublesome. I would downgrade it to 7.6.1 and factory reset before you start that process.
Any TC older than 3years may have hardware issues.. a Gen3, A1355 may need a replacement and certainly anything older does.
Drivers in windows for wireless are problematic as well..
Certainly start there and see how it goes.

  • HT1766 My iPad speaker suddenly quit working, ear phones are ok, anything in setup for a fix

My speaker suddenly quit working, ear phones are ok, is there a setting for this

Plug/unplug the headphones from the iPad a few times. Also try rotating the plug in the socket a few times. The headphone jack has an internal switch which turns the speaker off when the headphones are plugged in. The contacts may have gotten dirty within the socket. Working the plug within the socket can sometimes get things working again.

  • My PC (Windows) can't see my Time Capsule wireless Network

I just installed a wireless network with a Time Capsule and it's working fine for the three Macs and the printer in the household.  However, I still need to have access to the wireless network for one PC running Windows.  Problem is the PC doesn't "see" the Time Capsule Network.  What am I missing and how can I set up the PC on the wireless network?

Try downloading AirPort Utility for Windows here:

  • Time capsule now does not work with Lion just installed.

Just downloaded Lion to Mac Air. Time capsule now does not work. Where is the problem?

Restart the TC.. lion is stupid.. it forgets what it is connected to with alarming frequency ... like someone suffering dementia.
If it continues to have issues, plug the TC directly to the lion computer by ethernet (if not already) and try again. Change the wireless to manual in airport utility and change the wireless name.. to force a new configuration. Once setup you can just use wireless.
In the end you may need to reset the TC.. just hold in the reset button for about 10sec. It should then become available.. a reset does not do anything to data on the hard drive but you might need to restore any passwords.

  • IPhone 4S Can't see Time Capsule Wireless after IO6 update

My iphone can't see my Time Capsule wireless network after upgrading to IO6.  My iPad3 works fine after upgrade.
I determined that if I change settings on the TC to 802.11N(b/g) compatible it can see/connect.
Seems to be a problem with the 802.11 5GHz band that the iPhone can't see after the IOS6 update.
Not sure if this is the same issue that others are seeing but could be worth a try to change your router's radio config.
Hopefully Apple sorts this out soon.
Very annoying to upgrade and have existing networking break!!!!
Bad Karma and I just ordered 2 new iPhone 5's

Still having this issue - used to be able to connect prior to this update - The iPhone has no problem auto joining the local Cable WiFi - but still doesn't show the Time Capsule WiFi SSID's in the list. iPad and three other Macs see and can join the Time Capsule WiFi.

  • Mac connects but PC won't connect to internet via TIme Capsule wireless net

I have my personal Mac and work PC at home. I'm switching from a wireless network using my airport extreme base station to a new time capsule. Had no problems earlier, but now with my new wireless network I have the following problem:
    - Both Mac and PC are able to connect to my home wireless network created through Time Capsule
    - Only Mac can access the internet via the Time Capsule wireless network
    - PC connects fine to the wireless network, but the settings indicate the internet cannot be accessed
I've tried fiddling with configurations etc. but cannot seem to get the PC to connect through to the internet using my Time Capsule.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem....What's the problem? Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions forum AZR-DC.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem...
Make it a habit to power down your modem whenever you connect something different to it. Merely detaching the AEBS and attaching your Time Capsule or your computer directly will confuse most modems, so leave it powered down for a few moments. Power down your other equipment while you're at it.
Then, power up all the equipment as follows:
Modem... wait a few moments for it to complete its startup sequence.
Time Capsule. Wait a few moments again.
    Computers.
Be sure your PC and your Mac are getting their addresses "via DHCP".

  • Extend Time Capsule Wireless Range

I am having trouble with my Time Capsule's wireless range. I am not a networking expert by any means. I own an old building that is 4 stories connected by stairs with thick walls. All the rooms ethernet cables converge in a cubby on the 3rd floor. I placed my Time Capsule in the cubby, but I couldn't receive a wireless signal from the 1st floor. This is ironic because I have an old Netgear G router that sends signals throughout all 4 floors. So I bought an Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly, but the signal has been unstable perhaps because the Time Capsule's wireless signal is too weak. So I want to connect the Airport Express on the 1st floor using the Ethernet link from the 3rd floor Time Capsule which is my main router. From my research, I discovered about WDS networks, which I believe you have to use in order to create a network with multiple Apple base stations linked through ethernet.
I called Applecare who told me:
-To connect from Time Capsule to Airport Express using Ethernet, must use WDS network. Setup Airport Express as Relay, NOT Remote.
-Relay- Direct ethernet connection from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then wireless connection from Airport Express to Macbook.
-Remote- Wireless signal from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then direct Ethernet connection from Airport Express to Macbook
I have several questions for you wise people out there:
    1. To extend the Time Capsule wireless network using the Airport Express, but connected directly via ethernet, do I need to setup a WDS network?
    2. I prefer to just use the simple Apple settings "extend network wirelessly". Will this setting only boost a wireless signal received from the Time Capsule? Can it not extend a wireless signal sent directly from Ethernet?
    3. I'm considering getting a Quickertek Triband antenna to place outside the cubby. Anyone have any experience with Airport external antennas?:
    http://www.quickertek.com/products/timecapsuletriband.php
Any information would be much appreciated! These networking issues have been giving me months of headache.
    Thank you!

    Specs:
    Apple Time Capsule 1TB
    Airport Express N version
Connected with 2.4ghz. band to N capable Macs.

Extending your network with an AirPort Express (AX) won't boost the TimeCapsule's (TC's) range per se. It will expand the network's range by adding another transceiver.
If you'd prefer to avoid using Ethernet to connect the TC and AX, you might get a better signal on the first floor if the AX was on the second floor, i.e, roughly halfway between the TC and the 1st-floor computer. [Extending the range of an 802.11n network|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirPortUtility/5.1/en/ap21 24.html] describes how to configure them.
If an Ethernet linkup is no problem, though, that should work even better. In this case, it's best to use different (by 3 or more) channels on the 2 stations to reduce the chance that they'll interfere with each other.
Either way, it's best to use the same network name, network password, and encryption on both stations so you can roam freely through the building without needing to switch manually between them.
[Designing AirPort Networks 10.5-Windows manual|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] is another good resource you may find helpful.

I live in europe. Does a time-capsule bought in usa work in europe?

Yes, but you cannot select your country.. so some channels work that shouldn't and other channels that should don't.. there are major differences not so much at 2.4ghz but at 5ghz.. which is more important for AC routers.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
So the US one is now and always set to US wireless regime.

What signal is it picking up? Are you joining wireless network? If so don't.. it is really poor way to run things.
Is it connected to a cable modem? Full router or just a modem type?
    Try a reset?
Plug in via ethernet.. turn off everything.. wait 5min then restart cable modem.. if that doesn't work, give it a longer off cycle.. 15min or overnight.
