Time capsule with a airport extreme n router
Question I already have a Airport Extreme N Router and it works very well. But now I would like to have the Time Capsule and some how I don't know, have both hooked up maybe the older extreme N router as a extender? Can any one tell me how I can do this or if it can even be done.
Do exactly what you describe but place the secondary router in bridge mode then configure its wireless.

The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile. -
Time Capsule with existing Airport Extreme--Help
I just bought a new 20 inch iMac with a Time Capsule for home. I have an existing Airport Extreme and there are a number of peripherals (2 iBooks, Playstation 3) which feed off of this airport. What I want to do is make the Time Capsule accessible only to my new iMac and keep the other network intact. I disconnected my DSL from my Extreme and connected it to the Time Capsule. It works fine. My thought was then to run an ethernet line from the back of the TC to the Extreme. I did this, got a green reception signal on the ethernet from the TC, but am unable to make the Extreme work as it did before. I know I'm doing something wrong--possibly the config on the Extreme--but I'm clueless as to making this work. Any help would be appreciated.

Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme bridge resulted in slow LAN speeds
Wondering if other people are seeing this. I am unsure if this was a result of upgrading both my TC and AEx to 7.6, but my LAN speeds had suffered in this configuration.
1. Comcast cable modem connected to the WAN port on my TC.
2. Connected an ethernet cat6 cable from the TC to my Airport Extreme, which was configured as a bridge.
3. My desktop was connected to the Airport Extreme.
4. When doing file transfers within the LAN or general internet usuage, my network speeds were extremely low.
5. Disconnected the cat6 cable from the TC and plugged that directly to my desktop.
6. Network speed jumps up by a factor of 5. LAN file transfers and internet usuage has returned to what I had expected.
Is there a known issue where a bridged AEx conncted to another Airport "main" device will result in all machines connected via the AEx to have slow LAN speeds?
I didn't see this issue months ago. I did less than 2 months ago upgrade our machines to the 7.6 firmware, but after experiencing some hiccups on the network, reverted back to 7.5.2. However, the slow LAN speeds haven't gone away when the two airport machines are connected to each other.
Any insight or advise is appreciated.By now, millions of users have updated to 7.6 and I cannot recall seeing a post similar to yours on this forum.
As far as a "known issue", you would need to contact Apple regarding that.
Suggest that you have the AirPort checked out at an Apple store if you have one near you. -
How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.
The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network. -
I have been unsuccessfully trying to extend the wifi of my Time 2T Capsule with an Airport Extreme 2nd Gen. It works for a while and then loses configuration. I have done everything possible, disconnected it, reset it but it keeps failing, what to do?
What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.

No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so -

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

Time Capsule with (2) AirPort Express connection problem
I have (1) Airport Time Capsule with (1) AirPort Express connected. I'm trying to connect another Airport Express but only get a yellow light on the 2nd Express. If I connect it with a ethernet cable I get a green light. How do I connect a 2nd Express?
The 2nd Express needs to be about the same distance from the Time Capsule as the 1st Express....and....it cannot be closer to the 2nd Express than it is to the Time Capsule.
The reason for this is that the Express will pick up the strongest signal and you want the Express to pick up the Time Capsule signal to be able to extend it.
Then, start over as LaPastenague instructs on the 2nd Express and configure it again. -
Can I backup to a time capsule via an airport extreme.
I have a time capsule although it is at the other side of my house and i dont get great signal. I am looking at getting an airport extreme (would an airport expres to extend my signal. Will i be able to backup to my time capsule via my airport extreme.
If your Time Capsule was purchased in the last few years, chances are you have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule.
In order to extend both bands using wireless only, you would need a new AirPort Extreme, since the AirPort Express would only be able to extend one band from the Time Capsule.
If you only need to have one band extended, then an AirPort Express would likely work for your application.
Whether you choose the Extreme or Express, keep in mind that the correct location for an extending device is a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Apple's instructions to configure the "Extend" setup are here. Although an AirPort Extreme is pictured in the example, the instructions for an AirPort Express would be the same.

Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme
Hi all
I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.
All help will be greatly appreciated.So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.

As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm -
Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme & external HDD
Hullo all. For time capsule backups, i am either going to purchase a 1tb time capsule unit or an external usb drive to use with an airport extreme base station's usb port. Wondering if someone more knowledgeable than i knows if either choice offers a transfer speed advantage over the other.
Also, if i go with the external usb drive option then i'd like to employ a usb hub so that when necessary i can also run my printer off of the same airport's usb port. Would anybody know if this would work okay, without compromising backup speed and quality?

One big problem not being addressed by that choice is that Time Capsule itself is slow. Even if you connect a computer over Gigabit Ethernet directly to a Time Capsule with its internal interface hard drive, you will not get throughput anywhere close to Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

That's right. Real transfer times are lower than 100Mbps Ethernet, on a par with 802.11g wireless, and well below USB 2.0.
The speeds in the review and in my experience mean that with Time Capsule, neither USB nor the hard drive is the real bottleneck because both have higher throughput than Time Capsule's networking chipset. I don't know if the AEBS would be faster. -
Time Capsule with existing Roadrunner wireless modem/router?
My ISP is Roadrunner extreme, and the modem is also a router with built-in n wireless. I don't have admin access to the router so cannot disable the wireless. I would like to get a Time Capsule for wirelessly backing up mine and my wife's Macbooks (plugging drives into laptops is a pain).
I'm concerned by the apparent assumption that a Time Capsule will also serve as your router, though. As I said, we already have wireless and are pretty much stuck with that. Can the Time Capsule wireless router function be disabled, or ignored, and have it still function for wireless backups?

That's an option. There's an upside and downside to every type of configuration. The upside is that you can have the Time Capsule physically removed from the same area where the router resides. The downsides are that the configuration can be difficult and frustrating unless you know exactly what type of security the Roadrunner wireless is using.
In other words, you have to "tell" the Time Capsule exactly how to join the wireless network provided by the Roadrunner router. If the settings are not exactly correct, you'll get nothing but repeated error messages. You have to start all over to try the configuration again each time there is an error. Since you said that you don't have "admin" privileges for the Roadrunner device, you may not be able to access the device to "see" the exact settings that you need.
The ethernet ports are not enabled on the Time Capsule when it is configured to "join" a wireless network, so you will not have an option to backup using ethernet if want to do so. Ethernet can be 4-5 times faster that wireless and comes in really handy for the first backup when Time Machine makes a complete copy of your computer.
Followup question as this will drive what TC I buy: I already have a WD 2TB USB drive I've been using for backups. Can I get away with buying a smaller/cheaper TC and plugging in the extra drive? Are there reasons that's not as good as just getting the 2TB TC?
You can connect the WD drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule. The drives must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if you plan to use Time Machine to backup. The main problem with changing locations of drives (I'm assuming that that you had the WD attached directly to a computer) is that Time Machine will want to make a new complete backup of the computer if you connect the drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
In other words, Time Machines treats backups to an "external drive" connected directly to a computer differently than it does backups to a "network drive" connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule. You won't be able to "continue" backups where you left off. Time Machine will start all over again. -

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.
