Time Capsule with a Network Hub to expand the connections

well, I have a Time Capsule and it has only 3 network connections in the back of it.
I need to connect more devices. Can I put a Network Hub in order to expand it? I would connect a hub in the Time Capsule and, then, connect other devices in the hub.
Would it work?
Thank you!

You need an Ethernet switch. They come in 5-port, 8-port, 16-port, etc versions.
Simply connect the switch to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to create more connection capabiltiies.
Choose a switch with at least 2-3 extra Ethernet ports than you need at the present time, as the ports tend to fill up faster than you might think in the future.

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • Using Time Capsule with existing network?

    I am planning on purchasing a Time Capsule, but would like to know if it's right for me before I buy it. Can someone please answer these questions I have about it;
What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
I know there's a lot of questions, but I'd appreciate any help with any of the questions.
    Thanks.

What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
There is a device password that will be required of any user who wants to access the Time Capsule disk. If the Time Capsule is also configured to provide a wireless network, users will need to enter the wireless network password to be able to connect to the network.
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
In this case, the Time Capsue would be configured to operate in Bridge Mode. It functions as another Ethernet switch in that type of setup. Speed should not be affected.
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Yes, since the Time Capsule will be in Bridge Mode, devices that connect through the wireless on the Time Capsule will be on the same network as your main router...users connecting through the wireless on the Time Capsule and will be able to "see" other network devices.
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
No. In order to partition the Time Capsule drive, it would need to be removed from the Time Capsule case, placed in a separate caddy or enclosure and then connected directly to your Mac to allow Disk Utility access to the disk for the partition procedure.  Then, you would have to reinstall the Time Capsule drive back in the Time Capsule case.
In addition to a lot of work, this will void the warranty on the product.
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
iOS devices back up to iTunes on your computer. Then, when a Mac backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, all of the data is backed up. In other words, iOS devices cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule drive using Time Machine.
Using an App like Filebrowser, it is possible to have the iOS device browse the contents of the Time Capsule drive, but the iOS device will not be able to open files that have  been backed up using Time Machine.
The iOS device will likely open most other normal files stored on the Time Capsule drive if the proper App is installed on the iOS device.
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
Yes if the printer is AirPrint compatible. Check this Apple support document to see if your printer is on the list of compatible devices.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Otherwise, you can add an App like Print Central to the iOS device to possibly allow printing from the iOS devices.

  • Can i use my time capsule with virgin wifi hub

can i use 2tb time capsule with virgin media wifi hub router

Yes, but it will need to connect to the Virgin router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection from one of the LAN <--> ports on the Virgin router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.

  • I have a wireless printer, do I have to hook my printer up to my time capsul with raw USB or can it be connected wireless??

I recently bought a Apple Time Capsul and I am setting it up,  the set calls for me to use a USB in connecting my printer, my printer is wireless do I have to use a USB cable to set it up??

I assume that you have already setup the Time Capsule, it is providing a wireless network, and other wireless devices like your computer and iPhones/iPads can connect to the wireless network.
Some printer manufacturers do specifically require that the USB cable first be used as part of the wireless setup.
For this, you would plug the printer's USB cable into your computer....not the Time Capsule.
Once the printer is setup for wireless, you can then disconnect the USB cable.
Follow the specific instructions provided by your printer manufacturer to get your device connected to the wireless network.

  • How to set up time capsule with BT home hub 4.0 & Openreach

    Idiots guide needed.
My TimeCapsule (year old model) had been running well from my BT Openreach box (without using the Home Hub 4.0) but recently had issues with connection dropping - BT said they've sorted out their end and can't see any remaining issues and can't offer me any more support if I'm not using the Home Hub 4.0
I reset the TC to run straight from the Openreach Box  still have issues with wi-fi dropping in and out (both on ethernet and wi-fi).
    Can I:....
    1)     set up Time Capsule running from BT Home Hub 4.0 which itself runs from BT Openreach white box (thus continuing to get support from BT)
or should i go back to
    2)      Time Capsule running straight from BT Openreach Box
Can some one post an idiots guide to either option?
Other stuff that may be important.
Macbook air running Yosemite (mid 2011 model)
    Apple TV
    Airportexpress
    Time Capsule
    2 x iphone 4s
    Kids PC
Ethernet and wifi for above - I generally run everything hard wired via ethernet.

The easiest and sure way is to use bridge on the TC as the method of connection. The TC then becomes a device in your network and gets its IP from the main router that I presume BT supply.
    Method is,
    1. Plug the TC WAN port into the BT supplied modem by ethernet.
    2. Plug the computer you are using for the setup into the TC by ethernet.
    3. Run the airport utility .. go to internet tab on the top menu..
In the bottom option, Connection Sharing choose off (bridged mode)
    4. Go to the wireless page and setup wireless connection as you like it.. using whichever band you want. And make sure security is set to the highest setting, wpa2 personal. Put in a decent wireless passkey.
    5. Press the update and fix whatever else the TC will show as needing fixing.. usually security stuff.
    6. You can then disconnect the ethernet and connect by wireless if you want. Any port on the TC will now be a LAN port, including WAN.
This is assuming BT supply a wireless router with built in vdsl/other type of modem. If so you normally will not be able to bridge the modem, unless BT are using pppoe authentication which they haven't in the past.
If you really need to use the TC as a router then you will need to work out an alternative method. You can double NAT by placing the TC in the DMZ of the BT router if that is an option. It is not without issues in general.

  • Time Capsule with BT Home Hub - 9 hours of trying to set up and counting...

Hi...I am at my wits end having spent two long evenings trying simply to connect a Time Capsule to an iMac. We have pored over the instructions, read all the postings in all the forums, probably in the entire world (OK, slight exaggeration) and tried every possible combination, and still we end up with a non-responsive Time Capsule (blinking amber light), and the Airport software saying "Waiting for the Time Capsule to restart" in a perpetual loop. The issues may well be around compatibility with the BT Home HUb, but there again they may not. There are no clues about why it fails so consistently in every combination. For the record, these are the combinations we have so far tried: ethernet connection from WAN port on TC to Ethernet port on Home Hub...A wired connection is established successfully. But then immediately the wireless connection wizard starts up, we can't turn it off, and the wireless connection wizard fails. We have tried it in all three combinations of the Wireless wizard. The end result is always the above, the blinking amber light.
We have tried adding the TC without any ethernet connection being involved in the first place. This was the most promising, we actually finally got a green light on the TC itself, but, crucially, NOT in the Airport software: that just hung in the same perpetual loop saying "waiting for Time capsule to restart", even though it CLEARLY HAD RESTARTED (because it gave us the green light). So, after about 9 hours and counting trying to get this "out of the box" solution simply to be recognised by a Mac computer, let alone connected to any other devices in the house (heaven forbid), we are now at our wit's end. Does anyone have any advice?

hi cprelude, I have the same or nearly the setup as you a BT HH V1 and a 500gb timecapsule this is hardwired to bt hh and works well so fear not it can be resolved. first hold the reset button on the HH with the TC disconnected, then while the HH is restarting unplug the TC for a couple of mins then replug inyour TC with the reset switch at the rear pushed in and then let the TC restart and plug in the ethernet cable to thr HH then use Airport utility to connect to the TC. then if all goes well you can set up two wireless networks first being the HH and the second the TC 5ghz. if I was you I would do the first backup on TC via ethernet as the first wireless backup can take hours and hours depending on the amount GBs you already have on your hard drive
    good luck

  • Time capsule with new network

I have just bought a 4G router how do I change my time capsule to this new network from the old network?

It is usually necessary to reset a TC to factory to allow it to connect to a new network.
Does your 4G router have an ethernet port.. i really really hope it does.. if not return it and get one that is ethernet enabled.. the TC will simply plug in by ethernet and operate in bridge mode.
No ethernet .. then the TC becomes a dumb slow client device via wireless. You can do a join to wireless network.
    Instructions here.

And a very strong recommendation.. DON'T DO IT.

  • Time Capsule and extend network

    Hello,
my connection between Time Capsule and router is nearly working, but not perfect. Router an Time Capsule are connect via WLAN. Setup an possition of the router can not be changed. The router is far away from my laptop , so there is a very poor connection. Thats why I wanted to extend the network. Extending with WDS is not possible because of the router configuration. I have choosen " extend network" in the Time Capsule setup, picked the network from the list and entered the key ( 128 bit WEP ). Time Capsule tells me it could not extend the network, although I can access the Time Capsule and have a working internet connection. I am accessing the Time Casule via Router and all wireless, so the router an Time Capsule have to be connected, somehow. Can someone help me to get this setup really working? Or is it possible to access the router via Time Capsule? Because the Time Capsule is close to my laptop an I would have ab better connection like this.

This is not the actual problem. The connection is working, but very slow, because the router ( with dd-wrt software on it ) is too far away. So i wanted the Time Capsule to support the network. Connecting router and Time Capsule with WDS is not possible, because the setup of the router hast to be NAT. There is a another option in the Time Capsule setup to extend a network without WDS, which I wanted to use. The Time Capsule connect to this network via WLAN ( otherwise I could not access it ) but it does not extend the existing network. This is problem with Time Capsule an router. I wanted to know what I have to change in setting so that the Time Capsule extends the network. Is there somthing special with password or IP adress ( at the moment it is set to DHCP ), .... ?

  • Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Sure, if the printers connect using the Ethernet port, you have 3 ports on the Time Capsule.
If the printers connect using wireless only, the Time Capsule will support up to 50 connections.
If your printers connect using USB, then you will need a powered USB hub. Something like this, for example:

  • Problem with Time Capsule recognizing three USB hub hard drives at one time

I attached three external drives to my Time Capsule using a USB hub, but it only wants to recognize one drive at a time. I know that all three work individually with Time Capsule and the USB hub, because when I turn off the two other drives the third appears. I can turn these on and off sequentially, and all are individually recognized, but only one at a time. Does anyone know what I would need to do to get Time Capsule to recognize all three drives running simultaneously on the network? I turned Time Capsule on and off, to see if it would then recognize the three drives, but it didn't help. Could the hub be the problem, that it is underpowered? I do have an AC adapter on it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same issue and would love to know if you resolved it with a powered USB hub. Otherwise, i may just return to one external hard drive--though I will miss the double-backup idea. Anyone try the hub change?

  • I have a 1st generation Time Capsule with current firmware. Can I define the time periods when my children's devices have access to the wi-fi network?

I have a 1st generation Time Capsule with current firmware. Can I define the time periods when my children's devices have access to the wi-fi network?

Can I define the time periods when my children's devices have access to the wi-fi network?
Yes, using the Timed Access feature in AirPort Utility, you can setup specific rules for each wireless device which define the exact timeframe each day that the device will be allowed to connect to the wireless network.
    Example....junior's iPhone can connect.....
    Everyday......Between.....9 AM and 10:00 PM
    or
    Weekdays.......Between......4 PM and 9 PM
and Weekends.....Between......9 AM and 11 PM
At the same time, your own personal devices will have Unlimited Access at all times.

my macbook pro is connected to internet via my time capsule but my iPad and iPhone won't. it shows wifi connection to the time capsule but when i go on to the internet on the iPad or iPhone, it comes up with network error. can anyone help?

This can be caused by a number of issues.
Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get.

  • How do I set up my time capsule with my PC and BT home hub

    Hi, I really need help.
I have a new time machine I am having trouble setting up. I have a BT Home Hub that I have hard wired to the TC to the WAN port. I have Connected my PC to the Ethernet port. The PC will not find the TC.
I also need to Wi-Fi attach other laptop PCs to it.
    PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP?
    Ade.

You might have an IP collision ..
unplug the wan connection to the home hub..
Restart the Time Capsule with a single ethernet connection to a pc plugged into its LAN port.
Make sure the pc is getting an ip address. Open airport utility and see if you can now access the TC.. !
When you say PC do you mean windows machine?
Windows can have some issues accessing the TC.. especially if you have the windows computer on win7 running homegroup.. which is a wretched piece of incestous connection between win7 exclusively.
