Time Capsule with BT Infinity modem issues

Hello all
I am attempting to set up my Time Capsule as the router and wifi, connected directly to the BT Infinity (UK based broadband provider) modem.
I have been using my MacBook Pro (mid 2010, Yosemite 10.10.1) and Airport Utility to configure the settings so far. I've managed to connect the TC and have created two wifi networks.
I have since been experiencing intermittent problems with the TC not appearing on the network, via AU on my MBP. However, when this does happen, the wifi seems to work OK. Can anyone explain why this might be so, and how to remedy this issue?
I have connected my Sonos ZonePlayer to the TC, but when the TC disconnects, the Sonos ZP then needs to be set up again.
I have also connected my Panasonic TX-50AX802 to the 2.4 network on my TC. This all worked fine at first, but then after the TC disconnected and wasn't available, the TV is unable to maintain a wi-fi connection. How might this issue be resolved?
I also have my iPhone 5s and iPad connected to the TC (both running iOS 8.1.1). These seem to be working OK. I haven't experienced any issues connecting with the TC via Airport Utility on my iPhone.
I would be grateful for any assistance with this as I have only a very limited understanding of the technical aspects of creating a network.
Thanks

In a word.
Yosemite
The fix is to use a better OS.. eg anything before Yosemite.
Sorry but Yosemite is bug filled and causes wireless issues.. take a quick look around this discussion.. 3 out of 4 issues will be yosemite since it came out.
On old laptop and especially if you upgrade installed.. then you really need to go back to earlier OS.. or at least clean install Yosemite and try again.
It can actually cause issues in combo with your iOS 8 due to the new handoff protocols which apple need to work a lot harder on fixing.
Problems in wireless with yosemite.

Turn off the computer.. reboot the TC.. do any other other devices have issues? Panasonic TV or Sonos?? if not the computer is the cause.
You might alleviate some of the worst effects by setting up the TC again.
Please use the following.
1. TC main name really short.. eg TCgenx (x actual number of the Gen if you like).
2. Set wireless names TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
3. Lock the wireless channels so they cannot change. eg use 13 or 11 for 2.4ghz
Use 100 for 5ghz.. but whatever works for you..
4. Test with no security.. briefly to make sure that all is working.
5. Set security as soon as you can.. WPA2 personal.. 8-20 character password no spaces.. no non-alphanumeric characters.. mixed case and numbers.

  • Help with Time Capsule with a new modem

    Hi,
I did a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.  What is the  easiest way to setup my Time capsule with a new modem?  I will be using  wifi with the time capsule.  I just got a new modem and the time capsule  keeps flashing a amber light.  It was working off wifi before I got the  new modem.
    Thanks, Jerry

There is only one right value for wireless now. Which I did list in the instructions.
    WPA2-PSK (AES) for the arris.
    WPA2-Personal for the TC.
Did you reboot everything when you disconnected the ethernet.. so the computer and TC can reallocate the IP addresses. This is important.
Reboot everything when you rearrange networks.. always do it.. even I am forced to do it.
Reboot in this order.. from off.. everything off.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    TC.. wait 2min
Computer.. this will now pick up a new IP from the whichever wireless is stronger.. should not make any difference if it is the TC or the Arris.
Now see if the TC is available in airport utility.
If it fails .. reconnect it by ethernet to the computer.
Give it a different wireless name .. ie the Arris and the TC will have different names.
And you are using "create a wireless network" in the TC.. no other option will work.
Update the TC so the setup is saved.
Unplug the TC from the computer and plug it into the Arris..
Now reboot everything.. sorry.. but it is the easiest way to clear up old settings and get everything going again.
Now in the computer you will need to open the airport and find the TC wireless.. and then you connect to it.
Once you connect direct to the TC you should have no trouble.
You can setup and fix any issues.. there are always a few silly things.. password default or wan setup .. choose ignore or change settings.

  • Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem

Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem. I had an outage and the time capusule had a pop up that said change something, I did, didn't fix the problem, but now I can't get wireless networking, but the MacPro connected by ethernet works fine.

Redo the setup.. press and hold the reset for about 10sec and redo it.
This time set wireless using simple name, no space and pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless channels as that also helps.
Wireless on an old Gen1 can get pretty tired.

  • How to set up time capsule with BT Infinity

how to set up time capsule with BT Infinity

The easiest and sure way is to use bridge on the TC as the method of connection. The TC then becomes a device in your network and gets its IP from the main router that I presume BT supply.
    Method is,
    1. Plug the TC WAN port into the BT supplied modem by ethernet.
    2. Plug the computer you are using for the setup into the TC by ethernet.
    3. Run the airport utility .. go to internet tab on the top menu..
In the bottom option, Connection Sharing choose off (bridged mode)
    4. Go to the wireless page and setup wireless connection as you like it.. using whichever band you want. And make sure security is set to the highest setting, wpa2 personal. Put in a decent wireless passkey.
    5. Press the update and fix whatever else the TC will show as needing fixing.. usually security stuff.
    6. You can then disconnect the ethernet and connect by wireless if you want. Any port on the TC will now be a LAN port, including WAN.
This is assuming BT supply a wireless router with built in vdsl/other type of modem. If so you normally will not be able to bridge the modem, unless BT are using pppoe authentication which they haven't in the past.
If you really need to use the TC as a router then you will need to work out an alternative method. You can double NAT by placing the TC in the DMZ of the BT router if that is an option. It is not without issues in general.

  • Config Time Capsule with ZyXEL DSL modem/router

    Hello everyone,
I have been beating my head about this for the last week or so and it had drove me to drink (Really short drive by the way). I have CenturyLink DSL Service with a modem that they provided (ZyXEL PK5000Z), this is a modem/Wi-Fi router. What I am trying to do is have my Time Calsule be the Wi-Fi router so my AirPort Express can extend the network and do what it does to get my devices connected. When ever I have my Time Capsule connected to the modem, it will drop the internet connection within 10 min to 30 min, but when I have the modem wired to my Mac it stays connected for days. I have tried many different configs and putting the Time Capsule in "Bridged" mode with the ethernet cable in both the internet port and LAN port... same problem. If anyone could please help me get this setup, that would be amazing... plus this would save me from having to call the CenturyLink Tech Support line.
    Thanks,
    James

Strange things happen.. the TC should be fine bridged to the Zyxel.. as long as you turn off wireless in the Zyxel and only use wireless in the TC.. you must create the wireless network.. not join a network.. people try to do both at the same time and end up in a mess.
Then you can check the extend wireless network in the TC and airport should be able to extend it.
But I would also add the following.
Fix radio channels.. if you have difficulties the less auto the better.
Use SMB names ie short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric for everything but particularly wireless.
And use a different name for 5ghz.
    Use only WPA2 Personal security.
If you lay off the grog for a bit it helps keep the mind clear.. to think through the things.. although I do understand the frustration.
Let me suggest you post all the setup screen shots and that can help us loads to figure out if you are making a mistake.

  • Configuring Apple Time Capsule with Netgera DG834N modem

I'm configuring a wirless system with:
a 3 year old Netgear DG834N modem / router set to modem only mode
a 6 month old Apple Time Capsule
    a new Netgear WNDR4500 router
Previously I'd linked the ATC in bridged mode to the DG834N with the latter in modem + router mode and all was fine with no conflicts between the ATC and DG834N.
    Questions:
what is the best mode for the ATC now that it links to the modem only mode DG834N?
do I need to run each on separate non-conflicting channels for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands?

OK.. sorry I should have twigged with the TNZ.. pppoa is a b pain in the nether regions.. that should get through all the apple filters for language.. but privately I would fill it out with the aussie slang version. In Australia all our ISP use pppoe and some allow pppoa as well. You cannot bridge to pppoa.. the nature of the beast is that it has to happen on the modem.. ie the ATM interface.
There are tricks to get around it.
    1. Obviously just use the modem router as your main router.. that solves the problem but as a router,, it is lousy. Netgear build all their modems with minimal interface. And it is slow.
    2. Since you cannot do full bridge you can use half bridge.. this used to be common but not so much now. It has some issues with dynamic IP and lots of linux based routers spit the dummy. (almost everything is now linux due to free source). Look up the 834N if it is possible to do half bridge and give it a try .. Maybe with DGTeam firmware.. there are alternative firmware to some netgear models since the netgear one is so devoid of functionality. Other modems do support it.. it is not gone but well down the list now. (FYI: the problems with half bridge is the IP rotates but the client doesn't have the IP updated until the local lease time expires... so lease is set to ridiculously short times to compensate. )
    3. DMZ.. this is double NAT but without a lot of the bad effects.. A router in dmz of another router simply passes all packets both ways as if it is a bridge. The problem is speed.. packets only go as fast as the router can handle them.. Adsl aint that fast so it isn't an issue that way.
More importantly, you are still filling the NAT table of the modem's router, so it can fall over with too many connections.
    4. There are two tricks but Netgear would have to be replaced. Also the router has to support pptp to pppoa relay. Not sure if the WNDR4500 will but it is used by dd-wrt if that is possible. Pain to setup but very solid.. Thomson speedtouch and later models all support this. You make the connection to the modem via a pptp tunnel..which is able to pass the authentication.
The Draytek also support a trick using pppoe to pppoa relay.. look at models like 120.. This is different to the above but using a similar trick. (There are a few other brands to offer it but you can see draytek have specialised in it.. it is common issue in uk which is a big market for them.)
    http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor120.html
Note specific reference to apple routers.
    5. One to One NAT.. this is true NAT.. what is normally referred to as NAT is NAPT. One public address to many private addresses. True NAT is like DMZ.. it does pass through the router.. but all packets are simply passed from one public to one private IP.
This mode is available on speedstream models like 4200.. 6520... bit ancient now.. but they worked really well. Most people looked at the interface and had no idea what NAPT and NAT stood for. And Siemens wasn't bright enough to explain it.
Thomson has it.. but hard to setup. Draytek have most modes although not tried in their modems.
    That probably covers the field.
Most people resign themselves to 1.
I wouldn't bother with netgear forum.. but look at forums for your Telecom NZ and look at solutions people are using to run a router behind the pppoa authentication problem.

  • Compatibility of Time Capsule with Speedstream 4100 modem from AT&T

I currently use a Cisco router with a speed stream 4100  modem from AT&T. It works fine.  When I hooked up my new time capsule it connected to the Internet but the speed was extremely slow. Some webpages would not completely load.  I spent hours on the phone with tech support from AT&T and also from Apple. No solution. I exchanged the Time Capsule for a new one; same problem.  It also won't download the firmware update after multiple attempts (possibly because of slow connection speed?).  Has anyone found any issues of compatibility between the time capsule and the speed stream 4100 using AT&T's DSL service?  My computer is an iMac I purchased within the last year and I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If I plan to use the correct set up method you indicate should I reset the time capsule to the factory settings before beginning?
Your last post indicated that you already had the TC setup to provide PPPoE service, but it would not hurt to start from scratch in case there are some older stored settings on the TC that might conflict with the setup.
After I've changed the settings on the modem and connected it to the time capsule should I then use airport utility to finish setting up the time capsule?
    Yes
Do I need to enter my network password in the time capsule set up? If it's using PPPoE, I think I would need to enter one.
If you are asking about your user name and password with your Internet Service Provider, that information would be entered on the PPPoE page during the configuration of the TC.  The page will look something like this:
No entry is needed next to Service Name.
Are there any other settings that I need to change in the time capsule set up?
Remember, if you start over from a Factory Default Reset, then you will need to enter a device name for the TC, device password, wireless network name, and wireless password.  The setup utility will walk you through.

  • Best way to configure Time Capsule with Thomson TG782T modem(Telstra)

    Hi there
I am looking for the best way to configure my Time Capsule.  I have an ADSL connection and use a Thomson TG782T wireless modem from Telstra as my internet connection.  It is plugged into my iMac via ethernet.  It also provides a wifi connection for iphones, ipads etc.
I also have a Time Capsule and am looking to use it to extend the wireless network.  It doesn't seem to want to do this for me.  I am guessing that the Time Capsule needs to be in bridge mode, but don't want it to create its own wireless network.  Does this make sense?  Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks!

I also use TG782T.. although I hacked it to use on non-telstra ISP.. and so I can access voip.
But you cannot use TC to extend the wireless .. sorry that is not possible.. the Thomson is actually way behind and the only service it offers to extend is WDS and with WEP security.. so unless you plan to use G wireless and WEP .. don't even think about it.
Bridge the TC and plug it into the Thomson. Create a wireless network of identical name as the Thomson.. actually the Thomson uses a silly name.. just change it to something short and sweet.. TG782T would be excellent. You can also lock the wireless channel instead of auto and use the highest level possible security with your own password.. again not the Telstra one..
    so you end up..
Now run the same settings on the TC.. go to the wireless page.. set to create a network and use same name.. same security level same password but different channel.
Your client computers will now connect to whichever device has the stronger signal.. this is called roaming network.

  • Configuring Time Capsule with a Fiber Modem

I had installed a Fiber Modem FIBERHOME AN5506-04 today. But since then, I have to choose. Or I use the Internet via AirPort/TimeCapsule or I use TimeCapsule to make my backups.
The configuration needed was DHCP/NAT at TimeCapsule, fixed IP. If I try to use Bridge I gain access to Time Machine, the light turns green, but have no access to the internet; when, as assisted by the support of the provider, I use DHCP/NAT, I gain access to the internet, but lost access to Time Capsule, my MacBook Pro can't find the disc.
My configurations using static IP are:
    IP:172.21.2.190
    subnet mask: 255.255.255.252
    Gateway: 172.21.2.189
    DNS:
    187.94.192.61
    187.94.192.62
    Router Mode: DHCP/NAT
    DHCP INTERVAL: 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.100
The AirPort recommends to change to Bridge mode, but if so, I lost access to internet. How to solve these issues? Some clue?
    Thank`s!

  • How to use time capsule with Verizon wireless modem

What is best setup for TC and Verizon's Ultraline wireless modem.  Thanks!

    Bridge the TC..
I am assuming this is cable internet.. not wireless.
Just leave the Verizon doing what it is doing.. with the TC bridged you just plug it into the modem with ethernet.
To bridge the TC go to dhcp and NAT page for v6 utility.. or Internet tab for v5 utility and pick the connection sharing off bridge mode.

  • Slow internet. Is there a known issue using time capsule with charter internet? Any ideas

Moved to new region that has only charter internet service available. Speeds are very slow and today not able to log-on at all. I use the charter cable modem and time capsule. Anyone aware of issues with compatibility or have other ideas other than ditching charter. Unfortunately that isn't an option. Thank you.

Don't know the service you speak of, but simply remove the TC from the equation.. connect a computer directly to the cable modem... power down everything and wait a few minutes.. power up the cable modem.. wait a few minutes and then the computer. Test the speed. You will then have determined if the TC is the issue or not.
There are reports of the TC being slow.. not sure of the reason yet, but some people have placed their TC in bridge and used another router to get around it.
You can also see if this is caused by firmware, by changing the TC to 7.5.2 if you are on later buggy 7.6 versions.
Also test with ethernet and wireless..
Step through each step and eliminate that as a possible cause of the speed issue.

I have an Ipad, I activated the time capsule with no issues. I added the airport Utility application without issue.  However, I do not know how to access the hard drive with either my Windows computer or the Ipad.  Does someone know how?

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • Network apple time capsule with other modem

I am way over my head here.  I am trying to figure out how to "bridge" my new apple time capsule with my ATT Uverse Modem.  I have the time capsule primarily for backup, but it serves a wireless function as well does the ATT Uverse Modem.   Someone did this for me in the past, but my Time Capsule died, and I disconnected it.  I can not figure out how to wire it all back together.  Is there a diagram out there?

Plug the TC into a computer.. complete isolation from the network.
    Open the airport utility.
Put the TC in bridge mode.
Go to the wireless page and setup wireless .. create a wireless network. I recommend you do roaming network and so space the TC and the uverse modem by a few feet.
But it is up to you.. you can use a completely different network name and security if you want.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
Although the article is for multiple apple routers it will be fine with 2 different routers.
Only I would set fixed wireless channels.
