Time Capsule with HH3 but want to still use HH3 Wi...

Hi folks,
I'm thinking about getting an Apple Airport Time Capsule (2013 version) but need to check compatability with my HH3 first.
I've seen other posts here regarding TC and HH3 but not specifically for the configuration I want.
I only want to use the TC for backup and do NOT want to use it as a Wifi router.
I want to continue to use my HH3 for my Wifi network (mostly because I dont want to reconfigure all (10) of my computers with a new Wifi password).
I'm thinking the best way to set this up would be to switch OFF the wifi on the TC and connect it directly to the HH3 using an ethernet cable. In that setup would computers connected to the HH3 via Wifi then be able to see the TC?
Or is there a better configuration?

Hi.
I have a Time Capsule and have it configured in a similar fashion with my HH4. I still use Airport Utility 5.6 and in the Internet section if you set the Internet Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)" it will disable DHCP and any device you connect to it will get its IP address from the HH. It will be visible to any other device on the network. As you say by switching off Wireless Mode you can continue using your HH for this, although the wireless capabilities of the time capsule can come in handy. I have used it to set up a "guest" network and I have also used it in WDS mode to use an Airport Express to extend my network to a non wireless device (PVR) rather than using homeplugs.
Hope this helps.
Andy.

can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

I have tried to extend that wireless line but as soon as i remove the LAN cable i have no internet connection anymore. So basically, does the TC get the signal wireless from the router??
The Time Capsule can wirelessly extend a wireless signal....but only if it is being provided by another Apple AirPort wireless router.
If the "main" rotuer there is not an Apple AirPort router,  you will need to connect to the network using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • How do I use my time capsule as a wifi extender and still use as a backup in Time Machine

I purchased a new airport extreme and want to use my existing time capsule as a wifi extender in another part of the house.  How do I set this up so that I can still use the time capsule as my backup (time machine) hard drive?

    Hello BNOLTNER,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please see the directions in the following article for configuring your extended network.  Your Time Capsule will still be seen on the network, and may still be used as a backup destination.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • I have a Time Capsule with the internal disk drive. I have copied my photos and music to the internal drive. Is it possible to access the photos etc. using my Apple Tv to see it on my TV, iPads etc? on my home WIFI.

I have loaded my Time Capsule with my photos, videos, music etc. I want to access these using my Apple TV on my home WIFI for display on my tv's, and Ipads, Has anyone figured out a way to do this? I can do it by access to my Macbook but that's not always convenient.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

  • Time Capsule with iPhone

I had a theory this would work and it did.  So my theory was that I could still use my Time Capsule as always - as the main wifi device providing a connection for everything else in my house - and not have my TWC modem, but my iPhone as the internet connection. I wanted to use my Time Capsule with my iPhone as the internet source.  You can't simply plug it into the USB port (that would be amazing if you could though). I recently got a nMP so my iMac is now sitting in the corner unused. So I wired the iMac ethernet port into the WAN port of the Time Capsule.  I then plugged the iPhone into the USB port in the iMac so  it's charging.  I then turned on USB Only tethering.  Then set the iMac to share iPhone USB to ethernet in the Sharing Preferences.  Viola!  Time Capsule is now using the iPhone as the internet source!  The iMac is just one giant internet modem now.  I did change the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode to remove the Double NAT - but it worked both ways.  Everything is behind the Time Capsule as always except the iiMac - but the Mac's OS X firewall is turned on.  Best thing about it is that the connection from the iPhone is faster than TWC.  I may have to up my plan for tethering now and drop TWC - the prices are close to TWC but connection is so much faster!
Just wondering if anyone else has tried this?  Any comments or recommendations?
Hope this helps anyone else considering it.

I do not know any iPhone apps which allow you to access a shared drive. You may want to ask in the iPhone discussion area.

  • Time Capsule with Dt. Telekom Entertain and Speedport Router

    Hi
I have read quite a number of posts in various internet sources that using Apple Time Capsule with VDSL requires a specific setup, and possibly also additional hardware able to translate the VDSL specific channels in order to be able to use Dt Telekom Entertain (VOD and TV streaming).
My current setup is as follows (I have not tried any possible connections with the Time Capsule and the macbook pro as of yet, as I want to avoid frustration and spending lengthy time in sorting out options by trial and error):
    Internet Provider: Dt. Telekom
Package: Entertain Premium IP with VDSL 50 and VOIP telephony
    Router: Speedport W722V
    Media Receiver: Entertain MR303
Currently the router is directly connecting (cable) to the landline (fibre) via a splitter
The MR303 is cable-connected (LAN/Ethernet), and I plan to maintain this cable connection, so no need for wifi'ing this connection
A variety of device is wirelessly connected to the router, such as game console, two iphones, two ipads, a TV, two windows laptops (which are soon to be thrown out, as we are swithcing from PC to macbook)
Thus far all good, my question(s):
Can anyone advise on the best possible options to setup my new TimeCapsule (latest model) as router, thus degrading the speedport router to a mere modem, and with best possible I am particularly interested in:
    * Entertain (VOD and streaming) to work as smoothly as today (ie. no streaming lapses, outages etc)
    * VOIP to still run as smoothly as today
    * leveraging the benefit of WLAN speed and capability of the Time Capsule for all wirelessly connected devices
    cheers
    Joe

is this easy enough to do - ie. a find- and clickable option upon setup?
As regards roaming - where would I need to configure this? as far as I am aware I have not seen this option in my speedport, nor the network connections on my PC type notebooks.
Bridge is best done manually.. if you use the v6 utility it has ability to automatically setup what it thinks is the best configuration but in reality is often not.. ie it will tend to not use bridge. So you simply click edit in the airport utility and go to the network tab. Bridge is a single option.
Once configured in bridge the TC will do all the necessary changes. eg WAN port is transferred to LAN.. to make it as effective as possible in that mode. You set the wireless tab to still create a wireless network.
Roaming is purely a setup which you do yourself.
    See the doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
It doesn't matter that you are not using two Apple routers.
It is simple setup... trivial even.
Set the wireless name in the TC to the same as the existing router's SSID
Set the security to the same level.. that should always be WPA2 AES now which apple calls WPA2 Personal.
    Same password.
It is good but not required to separate the two devices by a couple of meters. Even using the TC in another room connected back by ethernet would be excellent.. but not at all required. Both devices having wireless for 2.4ghz set to auto is not the best.. I would manually set at least one..
The AC works only on 5ghz and is not going to be affected by the speedport at all.
Why do you want the TC as router??
Soimply put: Because I understood it could act as one? And it promised at first sight to provide a more powerful WLAN connectivity as opposed to my current speedport, which runs n standard but not ac standard
    thx
The WLAN power is unaffected by using the TC in bridge or router mode.
You have multiple options.. as mentioned .. roaming is only one.. you can simply turn the wireless off on the speedport. Wireless is still active on the TC in bridge mode.
BUT you do lose one function.. that is guest wireless.. when you bridge the TC. If you would like to still have a guest wireless you can do that by using the speedport wireless with a different name to the TC.. ie you have exactly the same setup as guest wireless.. only instead of using a single wireless router you have two which is far superior.
Anything that doesn't make sense.. it is probably easier to figure out after Christmas and you can play with the real world device.. post again if you have issues and we are happy to offer solutions.
    Merry Christmas.

  • Time capsule with USB printer stop to work.

Two months ago, I installed a brand new Time Capsule 2T. Initial configuration went without any issue.I installed an HP wireless printer and a second HP Laserjet to the USB port on time capsule. Everything was working well and suddenly the printer hooked on USB port stop working. Print job remains in the queue and nothing happens even using my MBP or using a PC connected to Time Capsule. The wireless printer is still working fine. So, I did a soft reset by pressing the button at the back of Time Capsule but it doesn't solve the problem. Both MBP and PC cannot connect to USB printer. The only way to recover printing capability is to unplug power on Time Capsule and re-plug it. In this case, MBP and PC could print. I don't know when this issue begins and I cannot predict when printing capability issue on USB printer will occur. I'm pretty sure this a Time Capsule issue or OS issue.
    Couple things I tried:
    - Uninstalled printer and re-added
    - All drivers are up-to-date
    - Time Capsule firmware is up-to-date
    - MBP running OS X Mountain Lion with latest patches
    - PC Windows Vista Ultimate with latest patches.
Any idea what could cause this?

The only way to recover printing capability is to unplug power on Time Capsule and re-plug it. In this case, MBP and PC could print. I don't know when this issue begins and I cannot predict when printing capability issue on USB printer will occur. I'm pretty sure this a Time Capsule issue or OS issue.
Yes, your solution of the power cycle of the TC shows that this is caused solely by the poor networking ability of the TC. There is a flaw in the firmware that is causing the issue. The issue affects a number of things.. yours is just one example of it.
There is no solution. I cannot even give you a true work around using just the TC..
Best solution is of course to get a network printer.. usb is seldom designed for network usage. You can purchase an ethernet to USB print server but the cost of the item would be half the cost of the new printer. And useless item into the future. So consider carefully.. maybe time for a new printer.
In the TC do the following.
    1. Reduce the firmware to 7.6.1 if you recently installed latest 7.6.3 that could be some of the issue.. it has proven less than great update. Hold down option key when you select firmware and you can downgrade.
    2. Factory reset after you do 1. or do it anyway if you want to stick to the latest klugde firmware. But clean up the old settings by using new setup.
    3. Use all names that comply to windows standard.
Short,, 10-20 characters should be plenty.. less than 10 also good.
    No spaces..
    Pure alphanumeric.
    4. If the TC is set to main router, set the dhcp server to much shorter lease time. I suggest even 20min. The increase in network traffic for dhcp renewal will be tiny.. but it will keep ARP tables updated better than the full day used by default.
    5. From the windows side make sure the TC is set to the correct workgroup under file sharing.. generally WORKGROUP.
    6. If you still have issues.. and I think you may mitigate the problem but not resolve it doing the above.. a nightly auto reboot from an electrical timer.. crude but we have done such things before to fix crummy domestic level router to make them reliable.

  • What is the best way to set up my time capsule with Existing Uverse

    Hello,
I have read through some of the threads regarding the co-existence of Uverse and a time capsule. But it all seems very advanced to me. Here is what I'm wanting to do.
I currently have Uverse. I have the box in my living room attached to a wall outlet, via Ethernet. I have 3 TVs, all with Uverse boxes. Wirelessly, I have several devices connected to the Wifi at any given time. An iMac, 2 iPads, a MacBook Air, 3 iPhones, Apple TV, an XBox and 2 smart TVs.
So my Uverse Wifi pretty much stinks. It's not bad right in the livingroom where the box is, but in my bedroom and office it's pretty poor. When I try to watch Apple TV in the bedroom I end up watching a lot of spinning as it waits to connect:(
I was told at the Apple Store that a time capsule could help with that in addition to creating a back up of my computers. Excellent! So I purchased it. But here is my issue. My main iMac, the newest computer with the most up to date software, is in my office. But my Uverse equipment is in the living room with the TV. So do I have to hook up an Ethernet cable to both the Uverse AND my computer from the Time Capsule? Because they are rooms away from each other:( Is ther any way someone can take me through this step by step like setup for dummies?:) I would be so grateful!
    Thanks!!

So do I have to hook up an Ethernet cable to both the Uverse AND my computer from the Time Capsule?
I'm not sure that I understand everything that you want to do and where devices will be located.
The Time Capsule must connect to the "main" Uverse router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. An Ethernet cable can be run up to 300+ feet with virtually no loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule wherever you want.....unless you have a very large estate.
If you want the Time Capsule to strengthen the wireless signal provided by the Uverse router, then the Time Capsule must be located in the area where you need that additional signal strength.
If I understand your post correctly, you plan to install the Time Capsule in the office? When you do this, you can configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless signal that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Uverse wireless network.
That will provide a much stronger signal for your Uverse wireless network in the office area. Hopefully, the bedroom that you mention is close to the office, so it will pick up the stronger wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
The iMac in the office can connect to the Time Capsule using another short Ethernet cable connection, or the iMac can connect using wireless.  A wired connection is always preferred, if possible.
At this point, I guess the first question would be.......
Do you have a location for the Time Capsule that will be close to the office....and...the bedroom where you want a stronger wireless signal?

  • How to Set Up Time Capsule With Airport Extreme and Airport Express

Just got a new 1TB Time Capsule. I want it to be the main base station for my network. I already have a network set up with an older Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express to extend it. I am thinking that rather than setting up the Time Capsule to "join" the old network, the best approach is to disconnect the Airport Extreme and Airport Express and reset them. Then set up the Time Capsule as a brand new network and bring the reset Aiport Extreme and Express onto the new network as if my original network never existed.
Is that the right approach or am I complicating it? Can I just join the Time Capsule to the existing network and still make it the main base station for the network?

I'd first use AirPort Utility to "Save a Copy As" of your AirPort Extreme settings. Then disconnect it, connect the Time Capsule in its place, and use AirPort Utility's "Import" function to read those settings. (Both of those functions are under AirPort Utility's "File" menu.) You may have to adjust a few settings. Once you have the Time Capsule working as you want, you can reconfigure your AirPort Extreme unit as you wish.

Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?
Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?

  • Time Capsule with Backup unable to be connected to and restored

I have recently rebuilt my iMac to 10.6.8 - I was previously on the same OS but wanted a clean install.
My entire mac was backed up to a 3tb Time Capsule
Having rebuilt I would like to restore some data from the Time Capsule but the iMac is now refusing to see any data on the time capsule.  When I manage the Time Capsule from Airport Utility I can see that there is about 1gb used.  If I share the disc and allow connectivity I can even see the sparsebundle, but Time Machine and Migration Assistant do not see a valid Time Capsule with data that can be restored from.
I am not 100% that I have anything stored here that I can recover elsewhere.  The key data was stored in multiple places as I never like to rely on 1 - however I would like to get to the bottom of this as I want some confidence in this for the future.
    Any advice welcome.
    Paul

The problem is that Migration Assistant doesn't recognise ANY backup partitions on the Time Capsule.  I can see the Time Capsule drive and when I select them I have to provide a password but it fails to connect or fails to find a usable backup.  But as I mentioned if I manually connect I can see the sparsebundle.
I'm quite happy to start again, but really want to recover some of the data on the drive.  If I can't recover now under these circumstance (ie voluntary rebuild) I will have no confidence that the TC will be there when needed under an involuntary rebuild.
The machine has been rebuilt under exactly the same machine name and administrator names, although I guess these could both have unique identifiers.
