Time Capsule with Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Does the backup portion of Time Capsule not work with OS X? I have to go out and buy Leopard as well??

The Time Capsule has no built-in feature to backup hard drives from computers.
Time Machine is a feature of OS 10.5 therefore it is not available in OS 10.4. You would need to use a different bit of software to make backups to the Time Capsule's drive.

Can I shared the files/folder of my time capsule with Mac/PC/iPad outside my LAN?

Mac yes.. use BTMM and iCloud or direct AFP connection to the TC.
There is huge amount of info.. just look up remote access time capsule.
PC no.. there is no AFP protocol application that I know of.
iPad no,.. again it is not an AFP protocol device. The only open access method apple allowed is BTMM which doesn't work for ipad.
If you want access for PC and ipad you need to replace the current modem router combo.. whatever it is with one that includes vpn server endpoints.. these can be fairly cheap.. plenty of products with 3rd party firmware will work. VPN is far superior method.

  • Time Capsule with Mac Os X tiger

I have problem seting up my time capsule to my I-Mac operating with Tiger. The wires seemmed to be ok but i think the cofiguration is the problem
    Any one can help?

I am also trying to set up my time capsule with my iMac (Mac OS X v10.4.11 Tiger) as well as my new MacBook Pro (Mac OS X v 10.6.2). I think to get the time capsule to work with my iMac, I need to upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard?? All the instructions that come with the TC say to use the TC with Time machine I need version 10.5.2 or later. I have set up the TC and am just starting my first back up of my Macbook, which seems to be working ok. My question is, how to get I get a back up going for my iMac without the time machine?? Do I need to go ahead with my first thought and upgrade the iMac to Leopard? Or, would I be able to hook up the TC to my iMac with ethernet cords and keep my macbook wireless to the TC?? I cant seem to find any information on this?
    Thanks

  • Can't back up to time capsule with Mac OS X v10.4.11

I just purchased and set up a 500gb Time Capsule. I have a PowerBook G4 operating Mac OS X v10.4.11. Is there a way to automatically back up the system with this OS? I understand I do not have the "Time Machine" feature available with Leopard OS. I can connect to the time capsule - so I'm wondering, am I just stuck with manually click-dragging files over to the Time Capsule?

No. Any backup product which can see the Time Capsule's drive can back up to it.

  • Using Time Capsule with Mac pro 3,1

    Hello, it's me, JB, again
I just got my Airport TC 3TB and it looks pretty slick
however, I'm pretty new to this "Time Capsule" thing
and I don't have a wireless card or wireless capability (not yet, anyways)
so, how can I use my Airport Time Capsule to back things up? All I see on the back are a few Ethernet sockets, power and usb.
I am guessing that I might be able to use the USB for connection. I am hoping that I can use Disk Utility and Time Capsule to back up my borked
hard drive, so that I can erase and reformat.....but.....I have never done this before. I am hoping that wireless is not my only option : <
    thanks for any help

Do not buy a dongle device. They are poorly supported in OSX and unreliable. Get a genuine Apple-branded internal airport card.
But, if you are going to connect to the Airport machine with ethernet, you don't need a wireless card. It will supply all the wireless needs for a significant area and gigabit ethernet is much faster than any wireless connection.

  • Will Apple TV stream iTunes media saved on Time Capsule with mac switched off

I have Apple TV gen1 running on 40gb internal HD. I was wondering if upgrading to gen 2 and using Time Capsule, will macbook need to be on/on network, or can Apple TV gen2 stream direct from iTunes Media saved on Time Capsule

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Both models of Apple TV require iTunes to be running on a computer in order to stream content from it's library.

  • Do I have to use AirPort to use the Time Capsule with Mac & PC

I want to buy one so the whole family can share, but can I just plug it into my existing router?
also,  I was told that the drive can be partitioned so that there can be an area for the time machine backup for my mac, but also additional storage areas like external drive space.  Is this true and can other users on the network access those files?
    Thanks,
    a

You might do better with a synology or qnap NAS.. they are true NAS.. not like the TC.. they are designed for file sharing.. the TC is not a file share device.. it is a backup target for Time Machine.
You can use Mac or PC with them and TM will also backup to either of those brands. (And many other NAS available with Time Machine extensions).

I have a Time Capsule with 2tb of storage, and an I-Mac with 500Gb. (which is at capacity) Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?

Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?
Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?

You can backup 2 computers as long as the TC has enough space.
Your access might be restricted if you set it up with users.. you must log in with the correct user to get access to the files.
Otherwise you should be able to see both sparsebundles just with finder.

  • View files on Time Capsule with 'different' Mac

After my install of Lion failed, the Apple Store did a clean install and renamed my MacBook (I can't remember the exact old name).  Now I need a file off my Time Capsule backup but Time Capsule seems to be thinking the MacBook is not to have access to the existing backed up files because I see no way to gain access to them.
But my question is more general, How can I view and copy particular files residing on Time Capsule with a 'different' Mac?  Can it be searched with a utility of some sort?
    TIA, Allan

If you're talking about Time Machine backups, when your Mac's internal HD was erased, it's treated as a different drive -- and that drive is no longer connected.    See #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Note that the name of your Mac doesn't matter; Time Machine uses a hardware address to keep track of it.  Only if you get a new Mac or have the logic board (which contains the address) replaced, will that become a problem.

  • Airport time capsule with a mac mini

so can i use airport time capsule with a mac mini

What do you want to do with it??
The TC is designed as a network target for TM on any Mac computer.. so of course it will work with a mini.
It is also a standard wireless router for a network.. that will work on any network client device..
It is NOT designed as a NAS.. ie network storage.. I recommend people not use it for that purpose. But people can do stuff that I don't recommend.
Good luck when the TC dies and their files are all lost.
Did you want to do something different to the norm??

  • HT1178 Can you backup to same time Capsule with PC and Mac

How do I backup to same Time Capsule with both PC and Mac

    - backup iMac to TC and hook up HD to USB port on TC to backup PC laptop
Hmmm not better IMHO.. as long as you disk image the TC.. and the amount of space you have far exceeds total usage on both computers.. For the TM backup on the Mac you want TC area to be at least 3x the used space on the drive.. leaving out VM or bootcamp partitions if you use them.
Plus enough space to back up the PC laptop a couple of times over.
USB hard drive is fairly slow.. but should be ok for backup over wireless.. just be aware you cannot unplug the USB drive and use it direct unless you format it FAT32 which is very poor format. So first backup is going to be slow.
    - backup iMac directly to HD thru firewire and backup PC to HD hooked up to Airport Extreme
If you don't already have a TC then this is fine. Firewire local disk is much faster than network backup even over gigabit.
Any of your options would work ok.. doing disk image on the TC is most difficult to get working and limits the hard disk space. Balance out what you already own network wise with what you need.. there are plenty of routers now with USB ports that will deal directly with windows using NTFS.. if you end up using firewire local disk to the imac..

  • How to access time capsule with an old mac

I recently upgraded from an old 12" PowerBook G4 to one of the new MacBook Pros. I also purchased a Time Capsule, am using it as my wireless router, and have been making regular backups with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to send away my new MacBook because of an equipment failure even though I just got it three weeks ago (that's another story). So I'm back on my old PowerBook for the time being. I'd like to manually grab some files from the Time Capsule so I can pick up my work where I left off but I don't know how to access the Time Capsule with this PowerBook. It doesn't appear in my finder like it does on the MacBook. Can someone help me out? Thanks a lot!
    Brendan

pretty sure you need at least 10.4 to use your TC as a HD
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html
if you have 10.4, you would install this to gain access to yout TC:

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • How do i use a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Can Iuse a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Not sure what you are asking here.
Time Machine is software on a Mac that is used to backup that Mac to a Time Capsule hard drive.
Are you asking if another  Mac can backup to the same Time Capsule that other Macs are already using?
Or, if not....please clarify on exactly what you want to do.
