Time Capsule with old saves

Hey,
I just bought the time capsule today and i would like to use my old back ups off my firewire external hard drive. Does anyone know how to do this?

I was told by the Apple Store genius when I bought my Time Capsule that there is no good way to transfer old backup files created by TM on another HD to the Time Capsule. I had to start fresh with an "initial backup" when i finally got the Capsule working. I can still hook up the old backup drive to my computer and use TM to get to them, but I sure wouldn't copy the old files to the TimeCapsule - there are enough problems with the darn TC without inviting more - and you will not be able to access those files from the TC using TM anyway.

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule with Old Computer

I have migrated all of the contents of my old, slow MacBookPro to my new MacBook Pro. My time capsule keeps giving me messages that I have exhausted available space and must delete old backups. I would like to delete the thirty backups for my old computer but cannot figure out how to do so.
If I open up Time Machine on my old computer, I see a folder entitled BACKUP OF MY HARDDRIVE. If I open this folder up, I see a subfolder with the title BACKUPS.BACKUPDB. This subfolder contains about thirty backups dating back to 2009. Can I simply delete all of these backup folders and subfolders without hurting the Time Capsule OR the Time Machine settings for my new computer?

    Delete old backups.
    http://pondini.org/TM/12.html
If you no longer want any of the old backups which is actually fine.. as long as you have migrated all your personal info, just erase the TC drive.
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk page, select erase and use quick erase. Do not use any other erase .. they will take from hours to a month.
Then you can start over with TM..
Erase will delete only files from the hard disk.. not settings on the TC and certainly impossible for it to delete TM settings which are in your computer.
I think you are confusing Time Machine.. software.. and Time Capsule.. hardware. They are actually totally unrelated.. TM uses TC as a backup target.. but it could be any external or suitable network drive.

  • How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac?

How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac? I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Thank you very much.

    Yes, you can ..

  • How to access time capsule with an old mac

I recently upgraded from an old 12" PowerBook G4 to one of the new MacBook Pros. I also purchased a Time Capsule, am using it as my wireless router, and have been making regular backups with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to send away my new MacBook because of an equipment failure even though I just got it three weeks ago (that's another story). So I'm back on my old PowerBook for the time being. I'd like to manually grab some files from the Time Capsule so I can pick up my work where I left off but I don't know how to access the Time Capsule with this PowerBook. It doesn't appear in my finder like it does on the MacBook. Can someone help me out? Thanks a lot!

pretty sure you need at least 10.4 to use your TC as a HD
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html
if you have 10.4, you would install this to gain access to yout TC:

  • Have 2009 time capsule  with 6 month old iMac  very slow cox said i needed to replace with a new time machine with newer wifi ??

have 2009 time capsule with 6 month old iMac  very slow  ...cox said to replace with new router or extreme with new wifi ???? confused

Replace the Time Capsule with a new one or replace your router with an Airport Extreme Base Station that has faster Wi-Fi. Or you could just connect your old Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection from the Time Capsule to the computer's Ethernet port.

  • Best way to Replace OLD Time Capsule with a new one

What is the best way to replace an old Time capsule with a new Time Capsule in an existing wireless network?

    IMHO..
    Start over..
Put the new TC in place and configure .. completely differently to the old one. That means you have to go around and reset everything to connect if you use wireless.. and you should forget all the old configuration beforehand.
You can of course try and slip it in using identical names and identical settings.. but the computers are not fooled.. the BSSID is different. And other issues tend to arise.
Use naming that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    See Pondini post C9 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
It may take more time to start with.. depending on how many devices you have.. but in the end, you can get much less problems out the other side.. which are extraordinarily hard to diagnose and fix..
But that is IMHO.. others are welcome to dispute that and may find a full swap using old settings copied to a file and copied back to the new TC work fine.
There are any number of posts around about doing just that.
I will post one if I see it..
I do confess to being a bit of a purist when it comes to this stuff.. but then I used to do computer support and trying to fix the messes people got themselves into .. inevitably they tried to cut corners.. instead of doing the setup from scratch.

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses

Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

  • I can't expand my Time capsule with an other airport to support wifi transfer itunes music to my stereo receiver.

I can't expand my Time capsule with an other airport to support wifi transfer itunes music to my stereo receiver.
I can see my time capsule in the airport configuration program, but not my airport. Not even when it is cabled.

On the side label find the model number.. A1084 for example is old. It will not work.
The new one A1392 and the earlier N wireless A1264 will both work.

  • View files on Time Capsule with 'different' Mac

After my install of Lion failed, the Apple Store did a clean install and renamed my MacBook (I can't remember the exact old name).  Now I need a file off my Time Capsule backup but Time Capsule seems to be thinking the MacBook is not to have access to the existing backed up files because I see no way to gain access to them.
But my question is more general, How can I view and copy particular files residing on Time Capsule with a 'different' Mac?  Can it be searched with a utility of some sort?
    TIA, Allan

If you're talking about Time Machine backups, when your Mac's internal HD was erased, it's treated as a different drive -- and that drive is no longer connected.    See #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Note that the name of your Mac doesn't matter; Time Machine uses a hardware address to keep track of it.  Only if you get a new Mac or have the logic board (which contains the address) replaced, will that become a problem.

  • How do you replace a time capsule with a newer one

How do you replace a time capsule with a newer one?

LOL.. pull the old one out.. put the new one in. Setup the new one.. do not copy setting from the old one.. it is better to start over and never copy configuration files.. although you might get away with it.
Plug the old TC into the new one.. change it to bridge mode.
You can then access and copy old backups to the new TC if you want. Although IMHO just keep the old TC for 6months. .then wipe it and sell it or use in different role. Do start clean fresh backups on the new TC.
If that is all useless. ask the specific question and we can try for a specific answer.

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule with ext hard drive backup probem

I installed Time Capsule with no problems. A 1 TB LaCie hard drive is attached by usb cable to the TC. The LaCie is seen by finder and I can open, edit and save files to it and so can the Macbook Pro on my network.
Time Machine backed up my internal hard drive on my Mac just fine, but Time Machine refuses to see the external Lacie drive so it cannot back it up.
    Here is the situation:
    1. If I go to Time machine preferences and click Options there are no volumes or folders listed as Do Not Back Up. nothing is there.
    2. If I click Change Disk the name I gave my Time Capsule is listed as it should be but the LaCie drive is listed also as if it were possible for me to back up to that also. The LaCie's name is there with the name of the Time Capsule in parenthesis. Isn't that odd?
    3. When I select the LaCie icon on my desktop and select Get Info in the Sharing & Permissions section it says, "You have custom access" below it says
    Name Privilege
    (unknown) Read & Write
    everyone No Access
I am new to Mac in general and this permission and sharing thing is still a bit mysterious to me so I don't know if these sharing & permission settings are usual or weird and could be contributing to why the back up of the LaCie drive is not happening.
This is the final hurdle I have in absolutely convincing my small but vocal office that switching to Macs all around was a great idea.
    Any help would be appreciated.

External hard drives connected to Time Capsule are not backed up by time machine. I solved this by connecting the hd directly to my mac and sharing it. That's not the solution I was hoping for but it will do for now.

  • Help with Time Capsule with a new modem

    Hi,
I did a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.  What is the  easiest way to setup my Time capsule with a new modem?  I will be using  wifi with the time capsule.  I just got a new modem and the time capsule  keeps flashing a amber light.  It was working off wifi before I got the  new modem.
    Thanks, Jerry

There is only one right value for wireless now. Which I did list in the instructions.
    WPA2-PSK (AES) for the arris.
    WPA2-Personal for the TC.
Did you reboot everything when you disconnected the ethernet.. so the computer and TC can reallocate the IP addresses. This is important.
Reboot everything when you rearrange networks.. always do it.. even I am forced to do it.
Reboot in this order.. from off.. everything off.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    TC.. wait 2min
Computer.. this will now pick up a new IP from the whichever wireless is stronger.. should not make any difference if it is the TC or the Arris.
Now see if the TC is available in airport utility.
If it fails .. reconnect it by ethernet to the computer.
Give it a different wireless name .. ie the Arris and the TC will have different names.
And you are using "create a wireless network" in the TC.. no other option will work.
Update the TC so the setup is saved.
Unplug the TC from the computer and plug it into the Arris..
Now reboot everything.. sorry.. but it is the easiest way to clear up old settings and get everything going again.
Now in the computer you will need to open the airport and find the TC wireless.. and then you connect to it.
Once you connect direct to the TC you should have no trouble.
You can setup and fix any issues.. there are always a few silly things.. password default or wan setup .. choose ignore or change settings.

  • Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem

Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem. I had an outage and the time capusule had a pop up that said change something, I did, didn't fix the problem, but now I can't get wireless networking, but the MacPro connected by ethernet works fine.

Redo the setup.. press and hold the reset for about 10sec and redo it.
This time set wireless using simple name, no space and pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless channels as that also helps.
Wireless on an old Gen1 can get pretty tired.
