Time capsule with older Airport

I just got Time Capsule wireless network up and running, and my newer ibook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Leopard connects just fine to the network, which I established using that ibook.
But, I also have an older ibook G3 with wireless Airport card, and would like it to connect as well for use around the house. If finds the networks but says "The password you entered is not correct for the selected Airport network." I am certain the password is the same and correct.
Will this older ibook and Airport card connect to Time Capsule or are the frequencies somehow incompatible?
Thanks.

...my newer ibook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo...
That is a MacBook or MacBook Pro... not an iBook.
What type of wireless encryption are you using? An iBook G3 can NOT connect to a WPA2 protected network.
The iBook G3 can connect to a WPA protected network IF the iBook is running 10.3 or beyond.
The iBook G3 can not connect if your Time Capsule is configured to use 802.11n only.
BTW, the Multicast rate has absolutely nothing to do with it. This is the minimum rate at which the base station should drop the wireless connection.

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express, Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express

Hi, I would like to know whether I can link up one time capsule with two airport express. The result why is that I would like to put one time capsule at first floor, two airport express at 2nd floor and 3rd floor. All these three share one network. Please advise. Thanks.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

  • Time Capsule with (2) AirPort Express connection problem

I have (1) Airport Time Capsule with (1) AirPort Express connected. I'm trying to connect another Airport Express but only get a yellow light on the 2nd Express. If I connect it with a ethernet cable I get a green light. How do I connect a 2nd Express?

The 2nd Express needs to be about the same distance from the Time Capsule as the 1st Express....and....it cannot be closer to the 2nd Express than it is to the Time Capsule.
The reason for this is that the Express will pick up the strongest signal and you want the Express to pick up the Time Capsule signal to be able to extend it.
Then, start over as LaPastenague instructs on the 2nd Express and configure it again.

  • Time Capsule and older Airport Express

    Howdy,
I have an Time Capsule sharing my internet connection and creating my house's wifi network. I have an older 802.11g Airport Express in my living room that joins this wifi network and I use it for Airtunes. Is there a way to share my internet connection via the ethernet port on this Airport Express? There does not seem to be an "Extend a Wireless Network" option in the Airport Express configuration, like there is for the Time Capsule. I tried setting up the Time Capsule as a "WDS main" and the Airport Express as a "WDS Remote" but could not get it to work.

I just went through this today after receiving my Time Capsule. The answer is yes, you can make it work, but it is a little frustrating.
In the TC, set it for WDS main and put the Airport ID of the Airport Express in the box for that. Ensure that everything else is set right, like channel and security. Update the TC and after it says it is updated and is just waiting for the TC to come back online, close the airport utility.
Then reopen the airport utility, select the Airport Express, and set it to WDS Remote. In the box, put the Airport ID of the TC. Update the airport express and wait for it to report the update. then close airport utility.
I just waited after that and then reran Airport Utility and both were there with no errors. But that was after a few frustrating efforts.
If this doesn't work at first, unplug both of them and wait a short bit, then plug in the AE and then the TC. It should then work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting up Time Capsule with existing AirPort Extreme 802.11n and AirPort Express.

I already have and am using an AirPort Extreme 802.11n with an AirPort Express. I want to set up a Time Capsule 802.11n. Which is the best way to configure this?

... Which is the best way to configure this?
The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile.

  • Can I extend the range of my Time Capsule with an Airport Express?

I have read on Apple's description of the Airport Express that it is possible to extend the range of an existing network. I have the OLDER version of the Time Capsule (it is still wireless-N but it can only broadcast EITHER 2.4 or 5 gHZ at a given time) that does not have the simultaneous broadcasting. Can I still use the Airport Express to extend the range of my Time Capsule network?

i think you have the same concern as mine....
would the express extend the n or g networks? i am pretty sure it cant dual broadcast.....
my guess is that it would extend the n network by default, but if an iphone hooks up to the part of the network that the express is covering, it will probably slow down to a g speed.
i am one of those that suffer from my existing airport extreme and express slowing down when i turn on my ipod touch or iphone! the whole network slows down to the lowest common denominator.
by getting the new time capsule (or the new airport extreme), i will be fine in the part of the house that is being served by the new machines, but i am expecting the network to slow down where the express is in incharge!
this is all in preparation to buy a new TC...... is my understanding correct?

  • Just got a time capsule with my airport base station.

I am trying to use it as a backup but keep getting an error message, i have other backups using time machine on my imac, but on different hard disks that are all dis-mounted. I want to use the Time-capsule as my main backup for our different mac's. not sure what to do?

Is the TC available as a TM target?
You sometimes need to reset the TM to allow a new network destination to be chosen.. but it will usually work with multiple destinations .. you just need to select where you want the backup.
Is the TC plugged into the airport extreme by ethernet? If not, I would certainly do that.
Reset it and run the airport utility 5.6 from Lion to do the setup.. v6 in lion does make a mess of this often enough we recommend don't use it.
Apple made a version of the utility from previous versions available to Lion since v6 was featureless.

Ignore what it says .. just load it into the computer and use that instead.

  • Time capsule with a airport extreme n router

Question I already have a Airport Extreme N Router and it works very well. But now I would like to have the Time Capsule and some how I don't know, have both hooked up maybe the older extreme N router as a extender? Can any one tell me how I can do this or if it can even be done.

Do exactly what you describe but place the secondary router in bridge mode then configure its wireless.

  • Time Capsule with existing Airport Extreme--Help

I just bought a new 20 inch iMac with a Time Capsule for home. I have an existing Airport Extreme and there are a number of peripherals (2 iBooks, Playstation 3) which feed off of this airport. What I want to do is make the Time Capsule accessible only to my new iMac and keep the other network intact. I disconnected my DSL from my Extreme and connected it to the Time Capsule. It works fine. My thought was then to run an ethernet line from the back of the TC to the Extreme. I did this, got a green reception signal on the ethernet from the TC, but am unable to make the Extreme work as it did before. I know I'm doing something wrong--possibly the config on the Extreme--but I'm clueless as to making this work. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do exactly what you describe but place the secondary router in bridge mode then configure its wireless.

  • Time capsule with no airport card on a macpro

Hi there, i have being unsuccessful trying to access to the internet via a TCapsule device with no modem on the WAN port, this modem is on other room computer in my office and there is no possibility to change location, the mac pro came w/o the airport card and i supposed that with the TC will not be necessary ....is this correct or do i have to install the AP card, ...on the other hand trying to configure the TC i see in fact the wireless access point and input the password but my machine just cant access the internet...

    I don't think you're understanding what a TC does...
How are you seeing other wireless networks? Using what? The Mac Pro? I thought it doesn't have a wireless card in it? Or are you saying the TC sees other wireless networks? Or are you talking about some other machine you have that has Wifi?
The TC can run in 2 different modes -
    1) It can act as a router/Access point. You plug your modem into it's WAN port, plug your computers into it and they all get network access THROUGH the TC out to the modem.
    2) It can act to bridge/extend an existing wireless network. ie, if there's another wireless network that is open/unencrypted, or that you know the key information for, you can have your TC talk to the other Access point and the TC can extend the access point to your location, allowing your Mac to talk out through the TC to that other AP and then out to the net though whatever connection that other AP has to the internet.
In reality, if you bought the TC to do #2, you spent a WHOLE lot of $$$ for no reason... plus you're at the mercy of somebody else's network.. The reason you're seeing those other networks, but not getting any internet off them is because you're probably not able to log into their secured WIFI networks...
Just move the TC into the other room and, hook the modem to it's WAN port, hook all the computers to the other ports on it, and you're good to go. What you're trying to do is very screwy and not really a good idea in general.

  • Using Time Capsule With Existing Airport Network

    Hi All,
I already have an Airport connection and would like to setup TimeCapsule on that network. Do I need to plug in an ethernet cable? Will it conflict with my existing airport base station?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Hi All,
I went through the setup on the Airport Utility but honestly I'm very confused as to how to set this up. It's being recognized by the Aiport utility but when I got to configure it, the airport utility says "Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)" I've connected it to my Ethernet port even though I thought I shouldn't have to and it still gives me this message. Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme bridge resulted in slow LAN speeds

Wondering if other people are seeing this. I am unsure if this was a result of upgrading both my TC and AEx to 7.6, but my LAN speeds had suffered in this configuration.
    1.  Comcast cable modem connected to the WAN port on my TC.
    2.  Connected an ethernet cat6 cable from the TC to my Airport Extreme, which was configured as a bridge.
    3.  My desktop was connected to the Airport Extreme.
    4.  When doing file transfers within the LAN or general internet usuage, my network speeds were extremely low.
    5.  Disconnected the cat6 cable from the TC and plugged that directly to my desktop.
    6.  Network speed jumps up by a factor of 5. LAN file transfers and internet usuage has returned to what I had expected.
Is there a known issue where a bridged AEx conncted to another Airport "main" device will result in all machines connected via the AEx to have slow LAN speeds?
I didn't see this issue months ago. I did less than 2 months ago upgrade our machines to the 7.6 firmware, but after experiencing some hiccups on the network, reverted back to 7.5.2.  However, the slow LAN speeds haven't gone away when the two airport machines are connected to each other.
Any insight or advise is appreciated.

By now, millions of users have updated to 7.6 and I cannot recall seeing a post similar to yours on this forum.
As far as a "known issue", you would need to contact Apple regarding that.
Suggest that you have the AirPort checked out at an Apple store if you have one near you.

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.
