Time Capsule with TP LINK MR3420 3G Modem

I am considering buying a IMAC and Time Capsule (TC), one of the reasons would be single vendor backup via Time Machine.
However my present network has a TP Link MR 3420 Router (TP), that handles a modem connection to a 3G Mobile Braodband Dongle.
I wish to keep this.
I have seen alot of discussion about connecting the TC in Bridge Mode, and still allow the TP to handle Network DHCP etc. Whilst this may work, a £249 TC relies on a £ 33 router ?
I have read about putting the TP into DMZ mode, swich off DHCP and foreward the traffic to a DMZ host IP Address.
How can this be configured in reallity, the present TP settings are
Lan IP 192.168.1.1 Mask 255.255.255.000
DHCP 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.999 default gateway 192.168.1.1
What are the principal Lan IP address for each device,?? do they both share a common lan address system, or each has a different Lan IP address system.
I would appreciate all help, advice and experiance

You basically cannot have two routers in the network.
Nor can you bridge the 3G router and still pass the IP to the TC.. as indeed most 3G do not allow that kind of setup.
You need the TC to have extensions to plug 3G wireless USB modem .. we will wait until doomsday before that happens.
Since you have to be dependent on a £ 30 router to control my home network so be it..
The actually ability of the router is not necessarily a big issue. The router in the TC is actually nothing particularly wonderful and the TP-Link will have a lot more ability.
Unless you run into some major issue I would just stick with the TC in bridge.
You can double NAT.. use DMZ as you suggest.
The problem here is that you are still totally dependent on the TP-Link NAT.. and you have added a second NAT to make it worse.
It is possible to setup the TC in a transparent mode where it is functional as dhcp but not double NAT.. this of course does make the TC appear as if it is the main router.. but it is appearence only.. the TP-Link is still the main router.

For this method which is designed to avoid the DNS of the TP-Link more than what you are trying to achieve but the effect might do what you want.. Do not use DMZ.. or if you do, use the end computer IP which should be accessible to the TP link as the TC is not actually forwarding.

  • Time Capsule with D-Link USB Adaptor ?

A PC-HP pavilion slimline had to come in to my house and I want to connect it to our network. I will have to stick in a USB Adapter to do it. I already found 2 of them. Both works on 802.11n. One gets til 300 Mbps and the other one only until 150 Mbps and I can't find the specifications of my Time Capsule 1st Gen 500GB to decide on which one to buy. Any help ? thanks !!!!

150Mbps is called N lite, it is limited to single stream.
Apple limited the Gen1 TC to use either N at 5ghz (300Mbps) or N lite at 2.4ghz. All apple routers have been limited to single stream, on 2.4ghz although you can get slightly better speeds out of modern versions.
So if the N lite is cheaper buy that. If they are same price buy the 300N.. but it will go no faster.
The antennas in the 300N might be slightly better. Do not buy or use USB wireless sticks if the range is far, or it is through many walls.
A much better solution is to buy a $20 (or thereabouts) Gen1 or Gen2 Airport Extreme from ebay or wherever you buy second hand apple stuff. And use it as wireless bridge. Plug the HP into it by ethernet. Voila, far superior wireless link at the same price.. and something that is more useful as it is wireless extender for the whole house.

  • Time capsule with internet connection problem

I have connected time capsule with my Airtel India Broadband modem. I am not able to access internet. When i see them in Airport utility Time capsule blinks in yellow and internet in stable yellow. Help required!

Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule. What does the Status show?
For Airport Utility 5.5.3 and 5.6, open Airport Utility and click Manual Setup. Check the Status.

I have a Airport network at home with a Time capsule connected via ethernet cable to modem. Also the network is extended wirelessley with an Airport Extreme. I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.  Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express, Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express

Hi, I would like to know whether I can link up one time capsule with two airport express. The result why is that I would like to put one time capsule at first floor, two airport express at 2nd floor and 3rd floor. All these three share one network. Please advise. Thanks.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

  • Network apple time capsule with other modem

I am way over my head here.  I am trying to figure out how to "bridge" my new apple time capsule with my ATT Uverse Modem.  I have the time capsule primarily for backup, but it serves a wireless function as well does the ATT Uverse Modem.   Someone did this for me in the past, but my Time Capsule died, and I disconnected it.  I can not figure out how to wire it all back together.  Is there a diagram out there?

Plug the TC into a computer.. complete isolation from the network.
    Open the airport utility.
Put the TC in bridge mode.
Go to the wireless page and setup wireless .. create a wireless network. I recommend you do roaming network and so space the TC and the uverse modem by a few feet.
But it is up to you.. you can use a completely different network name and security if you want.

Although the article is for multiple apple routers it will be fine with 2 different routers.
Only I would set fixed wireless channels.

  • HT1178 How setup and configure time capsule with ADSL modem for WiFi internet

For my first time time capsule 2TB set up,would like to know about configuration time capsule with ADSL modem for use WiFi internet!

You will want to turn off the WiFi on your modem (if there is WiFi on your modem). Connect the TC and the modem together with an Ethernet cable. Then, turn on your TC and set it up to be in bridged mode, connection type 'Ethernet'.

  • Help with Time Capsule with a new modem

    Hi,
I did a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.  What is the  easiest way to setup my Time capsule with a new modem?  I will be using  wifi with the time capsule.  I just got a new modem and the time capsule  keeps flashing a amber light.  It was working off wifi before I got the  new modem.
    Thanks, Jerry

There is only one right value for wireless now. Which I did list in the instructions.
    WPA2-PSK (AES) for the arris.
    WPA2-Personal for the TC.
Did you reboot everything when you disconnected the ethernet.. so the computer and TC can reallocate the IP addresses. This is important.
Reboot everything when you rearrange networks.. always do it.. even I am forced to do it.
Reboot in this order.. from off.. everything off.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    TC.. wait 2min
Computer.. this will now pick up a new IP from the whichever wireless is stronger.. should not make any difference if it is the TC or the Arris.
Now see if the TC is available in airport utility.
If it fails .. reconnect it by ethernet to the computer.
Give it a different wireless name .. ie the Arris and the TC will have different names.
And you are using "create a wireless network" in the TC.. no other option will work.
Update the TC so the setup is saved.
Unplug the TC from the computer and plug it into the Arris..
Now reboot everything.. sorry.. but it is the easiest way to clear up old settings and get everything going again.
Now in the computer you will need to open the airport and find the TC wireless.. and then you connect to it.
Once you connect direct to the TC you should have no trouble.
You can setup and fix any issues.. there are always a few silly things.. password default or wan setup .. choose ignore or change settings.

  • Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem

Configuring my Time Capsule with a Comcast modem. I had an outage and the time capusule had a pop up that said change something, I did, didn't fix the problem, but now I can't get wireless networking, but the MacPro connected by ethernet works fine.

Redo the setup.. press and hold the reset for about 10sec and redo it.
This time set wireless using simple name, no space and pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless channels as that also helps.
Wireless on an old Gen1 can get pretty tired.

  • Time capsule with modem in different room

    Hi everyone
I am interested in getting a Time Capsule for backing up my files seeing as i do my work on my macbook pro.
I am also interested in it for watching my movies off of the time capsule with apple tv.
So here is what i am wondering. I use fibre op, and have a cords coming in my room. The modem on the other hand is out in another end of the house. Can i simply hook my time capsule up through the fibre op ethernet in my room and have my time capsule working off it for back-ups and working with my apple tv from in the room, or do i need to physically have the time capsule plugged in to the modem itself? if so that kind of ***** having to have my stuff all hooked up in the living room when i use it all in my room, i would much prefer have everything working properly in the room i work in. Moving the modem in to this room would not be an option as i would have to have the provider come in and re-do everthing to get it in here.
So can i hook the time casule up to the ethernet port in my room and it all work fine and dandy? or do i need to have it hooked up to the modem out in the living room?
    thanks!

If you can plug your computer into the ethernet port in your room and be connected to your modem then you should be able to do the same thing with the Time Capsule - which means you wouldn't need the modem and Time Capsule in the same room.

  • How do I install Airport Time Capsule with ATT Uverse when two of my modems are wireless?

I recently purchased an Airport Time Capsule so that I can back up multiple Apple devices. I currently have ATT Uverse and my internet provider. Also, two of my modems are wireless. How can I set up the Time Capsule so the the two wireless modems will still work?

I think you are using wrong terminology so can I ask exactly what is the model number of the wireless modem??
The Uverse is already a router.. and I guess you have cable service.. so there is no need for more modems.. more likely you mean you have two wireless routers and these should be setup as Wireless Access Points.. (WAP or AP). If they are working as routers then you have far too many routers. If they are working as modems you have far too many modems.
It is impossible to tell you how to setup the TC until we know what the setup is.
But let me suggest the most straight forward approach is to plug the TC into the Uverse by ethernet (it cannot be used by wireless.. so this is necessary). Run the TC in bridge mode.. and create a wireless network. Test if you then can access it from your network client devices and do backups from Macs.. if so there is no need for the wireless modems.. leave them off.

  • Is it possible to use Time Capsule with Apple TV? Without having our macbook pro, iPhones or iPads as middle link?

    Hi there.
I wanted to buy a time capsule - But my big question is : Is it possible to use the time capsule with Apple Tv ( Newest generation.) without having an Iphone, Ipad or mac as middlelink?
So if I example want to have all our music and dvds on the Time Capsule and watch/hear it on my TV. Do I have to have one of our macbook pro's started up to get it to work?
Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here.. ? Hehe.
    Best Regards
    Christian

But then I can have all dvds and music on a time capsule and then run it via itunes on my mac and from there to the apple tv
Yes, if you move the iTunes Media Folder to the Time Capsule.
But.....if you move the iTune Media Folder to the Time Capsule.....how are you planning to back up this important data?
(You will lose everything in the Media Folder when.....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem and you do not have a backup copy.)
A much safer plan would be to keep the iTunes Media Folder on your Mac.....or add another hard drive connected to the Mac and move the Media Folder to that drive.
Then Time Machine will backup both your Mac and and hard drive.  So, you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to Arris Modem?

I'm trying to connect my Time Capsule to an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem. The modem works with my gf's Belkin router, and I can plug directly into the modem and get Internet access, but my Time Capsule will not work with the modem. The green light comes on, the signal is broadcast, all wireless devices in the house connect to the signal, but nothing connects to the Internet. I've tried the turn the modem off (and take out the battery) trick a dozen times with no luck. Any ideas on what to try next? The two just don't like each other.

Leave the modem off overnight.. with the cable disconnected. But you often need the modem off at least 15min for the dhcp at the ISP to reset. Try for increasingly long times..
You can also ring the ISP and ask them to reset the port because you have changed the router.. they should be prepared to help... Make sure the TC is the only thing connected.
I am presuming the Arris is only a modem without a router in it.
There are other tricks we use to get this working but the TC has such a limited setup presented to the end user there is nothing else you can do.
Just make sure the TC is set to dhcp on the ethernet WAN setup.. and has the connectivity leds come on when you plug it in.
Otherwise bridge the TC and use it plugged into the belkin.
