Time Capsule with two external USB harddrives (only 1 is recognized).

I have a 1TB Time Capsule with two MacBooks, a Mini, an AppleTV, and 1 Vista PC, connected to it without any problems. I've also added a USB2 hub where I have plugged in a Canon printer, 1 500GB Seagate drive, and 1 1TB Lacie (BigDisk) drive. For some reason the 1TB Lacie drive does not appear as an available drive on the Time Capsule but the Seagate drive works fine.
I've formatted the Lacie drive multiple ways (currently it is Mac Extended (Journaled) with a single partition) but this did not change anything. I can plug the Lacie directly into any of the MacBooks or Mini and it appears as an available drive. What gives? Does Time Capsule only support 1 external drive? Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for your post. I did as you suggested and plugged the problem drive directly into the TC and sure enough the drive appeared and was accessible. It appears that the problem follows the USB hub. I tried a second hub (but it was only USB1.1 capable) and it had the same problem. I will take this up with LaCie.
Thanks again for the response.

  • Using Airport Time Capsule with an external usb hard drive - how to connect

I have 2TB Airport Time capsule which is connected to my iMac by an ethernet cable and which I use for T.Machine backups - No problems here.
I have an old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8  and which is also connected to my T/C via wi-fi - again no problems.
But I understand I can use an external hard drive via usb cable connected via a powered hub, to the T/Capsule and which I wish to do certain backups from my MBP (I have no wish to update the MBP as it runs certain apps no longer available on the iMac (10.9.2)
Now the problem I have is trying to set it up,  the MBP has Airport Utility 5.6.1 and I can’t continue as it says I need a newer version. As I see it,  the newer version doesn’t work on the MBP only  the iMac.
A catch 22 situation. If I continue and and go to “manual setup” then try  update, all I get is “correct the problem before updating”  (Allow setup over the internet using Bonjour).
Anyone have any ideas or images that I can view to try and get things going?
I should add that I wish to use my external hard drive not as a time machine backup but only for certain items using say, Super Duper, but am unable to get the disk to mount on the MBP
    Alan

I still can't use it the way I was hoping because it then becomes a T/M back-up disk and not a normal usb/firewire disc.
You are first mounting the drive on the desktop, correct?
Not sure what you mean here.
You can drag/drop files normally or copy/paste files to the drive icon on the desktop, just as you would a normal drive that is displayed on the desktop.
Or, double click the drive icon on the desktop and drag/drop files into the open window there.
Tell us the steps that you are using to mount the drive on the desktop. What happens after each step?

  • Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Sure, if the printers connect using the Ethernet port, you have 3 ports on the Time Capsule.
If the printers connect using wireless only, the Time Capsule will support up to 50 connections.
If your printers connect using USB, then you will need a powered USB hub. Something like this, for example:

Is there a way to use the time capsule as an external hard drive only and disable the wi-fi function ?

    Yes.
    1) Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    2) Go through the standard configuration suggested by the setup "wizard"
    3) Then manually turn off the wireless function using AirPort Utility

  • Time Capsule vs. any external USB harddisk

I am new to Mac, and currently learning how to switch from PC to Mac. I have my newly bought MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone3G and also two PCs running on a Linksys Wireless N router. I use a Seagate External Drive to periodically backup my PC via eSATA.
I began purchases HD videos from iTunes store (watching them on MacBook and iPad only, Apple TV could be the next step). These files are HUGE and I need a device to backup videos that I already watched. For this purpose, should I go for Time Capsule, or any external harddisk?
I understood that Time Capsule also serves as a wireless router. Does it have to be wired with my existing router? Will I be getting too many wireless connections at home?

Unless you're looking for a new router, purchase an external drive and use it with Time Machine.

  • External USB harddrive no longer recognized/accepted

    Hi,
Since updating to Mac OS X 10.5.9 my Mac doesn't recognize/accept one of my external USB harddrives--both are Western Digital ones, which I'm using successfully for more than one year now--, and upgrading to Snow Leopard didn't resolve this issue (see console output at the end).
Changing USB ports--hub, directly on my Mac--is to no avail either.

    Hi,
Well, at least momentarily this issue seems to be resolved, although I quite can't grasp all of it.
I've unplugged the external drive in question, both from the USB hub, as well as from the power jack, waited now for two days, until just a couple of minutes reconnecting everything again, starting with the power supply, and after some seconds the USB followed.
Et voilá the drive is being recognized and mounted again.
Weird, really weird, as I haven't got the slightes clue whatever, when this will arise the next time!

  • How to handle upgrading a time capsule with an external drive?

My Time Capsule recently filled up. I have 2 computers I'm backing up - a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I purchased a larger external hard drive and connected it to the Time Capsule, and it appears to be backing up the Mac Pro just fine. I was thinking that it might be useful to have the MacBook Pro back up to the older smaller drive, since its drive is smaller than the Mac Pro's. So my question is - now that the Mac Pro is completely backed up on the new drive, can I just get rid of the old back-ups on the smaller drive and start backing up the MacBook Pro to it? I don't have a lot of need to find old files or go back to older revisions at this point. I'm mainly concerned with catastrophic failure (as recently happened), so as long as I have the latest backup, and can restore from it, I'm happy with that.
I'm curious what others do when they add a new drive after one fills up? I'd like to be able to continue to use the older drive, since it appears to still be good, but unless I delete the old backups, it looks like Time Machine won't make much use out of it.

That is correct procedure.. if the TC is older than 3years.. begin to be suspicious of the TC's continued longevity.. they do become unreliable and hard disks do not last forever,, especially if it is older one, running in an oven effectively all its life.
What model TC do you have? A1xxx model number from the base please.. molded into the rubber rather than on the label where it should be.
If it is gen1 or gen2 both power supply and hard disk is already well past the useby date. Consider a replacement or using USB drive so you are not caught with the backup gone when it fails.. although it usually isn't bad.. if you only have backups on the TC. It is people trying to use them as a NAS who really hit the brick wall.

  • Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as USB drive only?

My Time Capsule "router" kept losing the wireless capabilty, so I purchased an Airport Express (with the dual-band router).
I'd like to salvage the Time Capsule hard-drive portion and connect it to a USB port.
But when I plug-in the Time Capsule, the light blinks yellow suggesting some configuration problem.
When connecting to a USB port, my iMac will not detect a new device.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router?

Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as a USB drive only?
Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule is a network drive, so it must be connected to a network using an Ethernet or wireless connection. The USB port on the Time Capsule is there only to add additional storage capacity.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router
Yes, you would configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode to do this. If you do not need the wireless capability, you can turn the wireless off on the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule with two extreme's

I have a smart home with a structured wiring hub that disperses cat5 cable to every room in the home.  Currently, i am running isp cable modem to bridge, bridge disperses signal to cat5 locations throughout home.  Time Capsule connected directly to ethernet, extreme one & two (configured in bridge mode) the same in different locations in the home.  Airport utility is not seeing all three items connected to network.  I have to move in range of them to view in Airport utility.  To trouble shoot, I moved Time capsule to hub, wired cable modem to time capsule, time capsule to bridge, bridge to home.  Only then did the my entire network become detected in airport utility no matter where I was in home.
My dilemma is that I would like to have time capsule hardwired to main computer, and available to disperse better wireless signal.  It operates much better outside structure wired hub.  What are my options for creating the whole home expansive hardwired network?  If apple product had to wired directly to modem, then to bridge, can I go buy and express to achieve that?  Is there a way to do configure it the way I have?

    Any ideas? anybody?

  • Can I use a Time Capsule as an external hard drive only?

I want to use a Time Capsule just to back up my Mac every so often, but I don't want to use any of its wifi features or plug it into my modem. How can I do this?

If you do not use the network and you do not use wifi.. then the TC is only going to work by ethernet.
I gave a long description here how to do this setup.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
But just so you know.. a USB drive plugged into the computer would be faster and much more reliable than a TC.. which you may as well sell off.

  • Streaming to Apple TV from a Time Capsule with an External Hard Drive

    Hi,
I am currently storing my movie files on my Time Capsule by setting the Time Capsule as my Save Folder for iTunes. I am then able to stream content from the TC to my Apple TV. I have the 1TB Time Capsule and am running out of room. If I plug an external hard drive via USB in the back of the TC, will I be able to stream this content to Apple TV as well? Or will I have to change the Save folder in Itunes to the external hard drive?

    Yes.
An AirPort Extreme will serve HDDs, regardless of other hardware on the network.
I suggest Carbon Copy Cloner as an alternate backup.

  • Time Capsule with D-Link USB Adaptor ?

A PC-HP pavilion slimline had to come in to my house and I want to connect it to our network. I will have to stick in a USB Adapter to do it. I already found 2 of them. Both works on 802.11n. One gets til 300 Mbps and the other one only until 150 Mbps and I can't find the specifications of my Time Capsule 1st Gen 500GB to decide on which one to buy. Any help ? thanks !!!!

150Mbps is called N lite, it is limited to single stream.
Apple limited the Gen1 TC to use either N at 5ghz (300Mbps) or N lite at 2.4ghz. All apple routers have been limited to single stream, on 2.4ghz although you can get slightly better speeds out of modern versions.
So if the N lite is cheaper buy that. If they are same price buy the 300N.. but it will go no faster.
The antennas in the 300N might be slightly better. Do not buy or use USB wireless sticks if the range is far, or it is through many walls.
A much better solution is to buy a $20 (or thereabouts) Gen1 or Gen2 Airport Extreme from ebay or wherever you buy second hand apple stuff. And use it as wireless bridge. Plug the HP into it by ethernet. Voila, far superior wireless link at the same price.. and something that is more useful as it is wireless extender for the whole house.

  • Time Capsule with two macs

I currently have an imac and am purchasing a macbook. I would like to have a wireless network that they can both share and a single hard drive that can back up the data on both. Time Capsule seems ideal for this but, can I indeed back up both machines onto one TC? Also, does TC have software it ships with that would allow me to back up my Tiger based imac? Thanks.

The Time Capsule is marketed as being able to backup more than one Mac.

You can probably use some other software to backup to a Time Capsule, but Time Machine is for Leopard only.

  • Can you extend Time Capsule with an external drive?

Hello, I was thinking of purchasing a 500 GB Time Capsule. I know that one day this size will be too small for my stuff, so my question is if I was to then plug in my external 750 GB USB drive to the Time Capsule, would I then have a second drive available for me to do my back ups? I am not expecting some sort of RAID where I'd have a 1.25 GB drive, just want to know what happens when a second drive is connected to the Time Capsule, does it show both drives as possible Time Machine drives?
    Cheers and thanks,
    Andrew.

Hello, thanks for your reply, but as I mentioned in the posting, I am not meaning of extending the capacity. What I am asking is if Time Capsule allows you to select both the internal (Time Capsule) drive and the externally connected drive to use as a back up. And the reason that I am thinking of the 500 GB version is that I cannot afford the 1 TB version at this time, but know that I will need more capacity later. So in the Time Machine Preferences can you press the Change Disk button can you select the Time Capsule drive or the Externally connected drive to the Time Capsule?
    Cheers and thanks.
