Time capsule won't allow long file names

Hello,
I've managed to solve every problem I've had through searching other people's forum posts - apart from this one.
I've got a MacBook Pro and Dell PC (Windows 7) connected to a Time Capsule. Soon I'll happily bin the Dell but am moving gently to Macs while I learn about them.
The Mac connects happily to TC and will allow creation/editing of long file names.
The Dell allowed this for a week, but now doesn't like it. When I go to the Time Capsule/Data folder in Windows 7 Explorer, I can copy over files with long names, but I can't create them, nor can I change any existing file/folder names on TC to be longer than 8 characters.
I've searched and searched online and can't find anything that would suggest why this is happening.
Thanks in advance,
Adrian

Tried DHCP & NAT but had the double NAT issue.
If you got the TC working and had double NAT .. sorry but the TP-Link is exactly the same.. you cannot distribute a single IP without double NAT.. the TC tells you it is a problem.. the TP-Link doesn't.. otherwise there is no difference.
But it is important the double NAT is setup right.. ie you must use different ranges.. please tell us the IP you get from a directly connected computer..
If it is 10.x.x.x then you should move the TC to 192.168. rather than default IP of 10.0.1.1 .. the TP-Link already will use 192.168.x.x. which might also explain why it works better.

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)

  • My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for.

My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for. It has been working fine for years.  All of a sudden I keep getting a message that TC (time capsule) cannot complete back up as it is already in use.  I am doing the backups automatically through Time Capsule.

Restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter. When it's back online, open the AirPort Utility application and check to see whether there's a firmware update for it.

  • Airport time capsule won't allow me to print over wifi

I just bought an airport time capsule 2TB. I set it up and almost everything works great. I have a printer that is not wireless. It's a brother 7065DN.  I was told by an apple employee that if I plug the printer into the airport time capsule it will allow me to print wirelessly from my macbook pro.  However, this does not work.  I'm not that big into technology but if anyone knows how I can fix this please let me know.  It would be nice not to have to plug my laptop in all the time to print a short

You do it the same way you did when you installed the printer on your Mac.
Connect the printer to the USB port on the Time Capsule
    Power up the printer
Click System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Click Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Hopefully, your printer will appear.... IF......it is compatible with the TIme Capsule
Click on the name of the printer to highlight it
    Click Add
Now try to print.  When you open the Print dialog box, it will appear as if you have two printers installed......because you do. One is installed on the Mac. The other is installed on the Time Capsule
You must choose the correct printer at the Time Capsule to be able to send the print command to the printer at the Time Capsule.

  • Allowing Long File Names

how do i set a preference to allow long file names

Is your server FAT32? To answer your question I haven't hooked back up with the pc to see if the long names are still there. However, when I connect with my mac if I double click the apparently truncated file name on my external hard drive, iTunes will import it like it is new, but with the entire name of the file with no truncation. So I know that all that information is still there, but I just don't know how to recover that name so that the xml file can find the file and play it. Have you had any success?

  • Time Capsule won't allow me to delete locked files

I have transferred old files from my external hard drive (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) to my Time Capsule.
However, when I tried to delete those files via "move to Trash", some folders cannot be deleted due to the error below:
The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.
I checked the folder and some of the files are LOCKED. However, when I try "Get Info", the Lock checkbox is disabled.
    Some things to take note:
I did not change user account
I am using Mountain Lion OS
I am using Time Capsule as my wifi router
I am too scared to use the Terminal but I reckon that is the only way how. I tried to google how to do it but I haven't seen any clear instructions on my specific problem. I tried to go to the Time Capsule path but Terminal says "the path does not exist".
    Kindly help!
    Thanks in advance.

    you could try this:
go system preferences > time machine and turn TM off. click on +change disk+ and select none.
    next, delete this file <MacintoshHD>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
restart your machine, go system preferences > time machine and turn TM back on. click on +change disk+, re-select your backup volume and click +use for backups+.

  • Time Capsule won't accept my user name and password for access - Help!

    Hi all,
My Time Capsule seemed to stop working one day and I had to do a hard reset with the little button at the back. After that it worked and I restored my wireless network settings but now I can't access the Time Capsules hard drive with Time Machine.
When I try to choose it as my Backup Disk in the Time Machine preferences it says "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "Our Time Capsule" (the name of my time capsule). However, every time I try to enter my password I get "Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password".
I've already tried several resets of the Time Capsule and I've also tried logging on my computer as the Root user and changing my administrator account password back and forth but no go.
    Help! and Thanks.

    Norman & Harry,
    Consider the following:
*_Time Capsule Keeps Asking Me For a Password_*
It will be important to know what is going on, or what you are doing when it asks for the password. Is it asking for a password only when Time Machine attempts a backup? Consider this:
It is NOT your username and password it wants when you try accessing the Time Capsule. (I know... it SAYS "username and password") But it means the Time Capsule's Name and Password.
You will find that by launching Airport Utility.
Select the TC on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
    Click the "Time Capsule" Tab.
You will see "Time Capsule Name:" and "Time Capsule Password".
Make sure “Remember password in keychain" is checked.
That is the information you need to enter when it asks for "username & password."
*I Don’t Remember What My Time Capsule Password Is*
You can see what your current TC password is by going into Keychain.
Open your Keychain and select "login" from the Keychains pane in the top left. Highlight "Passwords" in the Category pane from the lower left.
Sort all the items by Kind. Note everything labeled "Airport...". How many do you have listed? There should only be one "Airport base station password" for each base station that you have active. Also, there should only be one "Airport network password" for each network you have created. If there are more than these, then delete all but the ones with the most recent Modification date.
To see what passwords are being stored, double-click your Time Capsules' entry. A new window will appear.
Put a check beside "Show Password". You may be asked for your own Admin password so enter that.
Now the Password field will display the password you entered into Airport Utility for your Time Capsule
*It Still Won’t Accept the TC Name and Password*
Launch Airport Utility --> Manual Setup.
Select "Disks" in the tool bar above.
    Click the "File Sharing" tab.
Is "File Sharing" checked? It should be.
What is selected beside "Secure Shared Disks"? If it says "With Accounts" or "With a Disk Password" then the system will ask you for a password every time it mounts the TC hard disk. If you switch it to "With Time Capsule Password" then use the password you designated earlier in the “Time Capsule" tab. It should only ask you once and then never again - because you had checked "Remember password in keychain".
If you have made any changes then click "Update".
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • Time Capsule Won't Allow Some Programs to Open

I have a 1TB TC with less than 25GB in one sparse bundle on it. Free space is +/- 930GB. My system is as follows:
eMac 1.25Ghz, 500GB internal drive, 2GB memory, OS X 10.4.11, all updates are current.
3TB of storage connected to the eMac via Firewire 400 for additional storage (video).
1TB Time Capsule connected to the eMac via 1000GB Ethernet.
I had to reformat two of the Video (Firewire) drives and transfered 900GB to the TC. This upload by the way takes greater than 10 times longer than to Firewire disks.
    I reformatted the FW disks.
When I went to do download the files from TC to the video FW disks I started multiple copy processes. As i write this I have 4 going on, 1-152GB, 1-75GB, 1-525GB and 1-69GB.
The problem is that several programs such as Activity Monitor, Empty Trash (on disks not being used for the copy), Preview and Acrobat Professional "hang" or fail to open while the copy is in progress. Now normally I'd wait, however some things such as activity monitor and empty trash I need to use. Since the process takes several days this is not great!
Other programs such as Safari and Mail work fine!
    Any ideas?
    John Schubert

Yeah, I had 8 or 10 copy (transfers) going at once, now I'm down to 4. I do this all the time, however before now I've always used Firewire. Does Ethernet require more processor overhead? It would seem so.
I've been looking at a new Xserve or possibly a recent used Xserve and a rack; this video stuff really eats up hard drives. Saw a rack mount enclosure that holds 12 IDE drives-9TB possible for $749 and has Firewire connectivity. I could put all my existing drives in that and have everything in one place.
Anyway I've go to live with what I've go for now.
    Thanks

  • Time capsule won`t allow multiple devices to connect to the internet

I`ve got a 2TB time capsule that worked fine.
I moved to this condo where the is already a wired internet service available to each apartment. The access is made through a login and password whenever You open you browser, if connected directly on the WAN cable. No multiple logs are allowed.
When I used my Time Capsule to create a wi-fi network and serve as a router I could access the internet on my MacBook over the wi-fi just created. No problem at all. But whenever I try to log other devices (iphone, apple tv) it asks for my ap login and password, and of course it states that there`s already an active connection to that user and won`t grant me access.
I`ve then borrowed a tp-lynk router from a friend of mine, created a wi-fi network (without the time capsule on it), it asked for the log in and all but then everything worked fine and I could use all my devices through this network.
Back to the time capsule, I`ve tried different settings. First one was bridge mode, but it didn`t work. Tried DHCP & NAT but had the double NAT issue.
    Also I`ve tried this solution https://www.autoitconsulting.com/site/networking/configuring-an-airport-extreme- for-nat-only-mode/
    but it would`t work either.
My guess is that somehow Time Capsule is attributing different IP addresses to each device that enters the Wi-Fi network, and that`s the reason I can`t access the net, since the service provider won`t allow more than one connection. On the other hand TP-Lynk was able to connect to the internet service through one IP address and then connect to other devices.
Any idea on how to solve this issue?

  • Time Capsule won't allow connection

I recently installed a 1 Tb. Time Capsule and attached it to my existing Airport wireless network. Things worked fine for about 2 weeks then I started getting errors such as "time cacpsule cannot set up directory". Now I cannot even connect to the time capsule as it says "too many users logged in-try again later". Using latest operating sytem and an Imac. Any help appreciated.

Ok.. that is very helpful. What OS is your Mac running?
Please now take a few screenshots of your airport utility so I can see the setup of the TC.
But it looks like it is bridged.
Open the utility and click on manual setup.
Take a screenshot of the summary page.
Take a screenshot of the internet tab.
And the other two tabs there.. TCP/IP
    And DHCP
Yours will look different to mine.. but there is nothing in them that is needing to be hidden.. it is useless info to another person. I post mine to show it is useless in case it worries you.
I do need some more info.
What is the modem you have? Is it also a wifi router. In the list of wireless you took the snapshots of, you have several wireless names.. I want to know which of those are yours??
The WEP security device is a problem. It is old and near useless.. if you don't own it that is fine.. but if it is yours get rid of it.
Can your PC and PS3 connect to the internet via some other wireless?
It looks like you might be able to simply bypass the TC to connect the PC.
Sometimes it is easier to solve this problem by using different hardware.. and a secondary wireless AP can easily be plugged into a modem router if that is what you have to provide wireless just for your PC devices.
What model is your TC.. ?
Please look at the bottom rubber mat.. there is a number in the top line of the rubber molding.. It will say A1254 or A1302 or A1355 .. those are the numbers for Gen1 , 2 and 3. Gen4 it is on the paper label.. where it always should have been A1409. Please tell me that number.

  • Time Capsule won't allow me to back up

Hey guys, so I recently got a new HDD for my macbook (black macbook) and I installed it and restored all my stuff from time capsule after I reinstalled Snow Leopard. However, during the process I had to reset my time capsule because I had forgotten my password to access the disk. Now I tried to do a back up today and when I do it says the following:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password.
Open Time Machine preferences and select the network backup disk and re-enter the correct username and password"
I reselected the disk three times and each time I get this message. How do I fix this so I can start backing up again?
    L A

    you could try this:
go system preferences > time machine and turn TM off. click on +change disk+ and select none.
    next, delete this file <MacintoshHD>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
restart your machine, go system preferences > time machine and turn TM back on. click on +change disk+, re-select your backup volume and click +use for backups+.

  • Time Capsule won't allow me to access Apple's Software Updates

  • Time Capsule won't allow to Join to a 5GHZ network?

Why doesn't TC allow me to "JOIN" a 5GHZ network only 2.4GHZ?

Correct.. the wireless name on the TC covers both bands.. so you need to get in there and change it.
The main wireless network name is this one.. It is actually the name of both bands or just 2.4ghz if you set 5ghz.
I cut off the screenshot but down the bottom of this page is wireless options.. click on that.
Now set a different network name for the 5ghz.. and when you look at the wireless networks.. you will then see two.. TC24ghz or whatever you call the 2.4ghz and TC5ghz or whatever you call the 5ghz band.. choose 5ghz.
I do the same thing on all my routers.. I have a WNDR3800 running gargoyle so name it Gargoyle24ghz and Gargoyle5ghz
I have a Gen5 TC and it follows the same pattern.. with the Gen5 in front.
You can see also a TCgen3 which I am testing other things on.. so it has no band naming... if I join the TCgen3, I have no way to select 2.4ghz or 5ghz because they are identical names.. it will pick the best signal.. never the best speed. IMHO that makes it useless.. but I guess for some people utter simplistic is what they need.

  • Time Machine won't allow inProgress file (or any other backup) to be deleted

    iMac early 2009 OS X 10.9.5
CCC reported an error with a file (bad sector?) but before I attempted to replace it I found I was unable to re-boot iMac. I have successfully restored from Time Machine but TM will not now undertake further back ups and the external USB drive holding TM can neither be completely verified nor repaired. Interestningly I have been able to restore even though I can't write new back ups to TM.
I have extracted most of my documents etc and as SMART Utility reports my hard drive as failing (6 re-allocated sectors and 1 event), I thought I'd try an re-format the iMac  drive before I decide whether to replace the iMac hard drive or the iMac itself. I didn't realise that restoring from a TM back up didn't resolve a bad sector issue and that I need to re-format the iMac drive to sort it. But I'd like to have a more reliable back up before attempting this (and before even re-installing the OS) in case there are issues. I tried moving the TM drive so I could re-format that drive first and get it properly functioning, but it moves some files for a day and then various file transfer/access errors prevent completion of the copy. I thought maybe the InProgress file might be the issue but I can't delete it so can't check.
    So:
1/ Why do various web pages and Pondini suggest I can simply delete the inProgress file whereas my system says I cannot delete it? What am I missing? What steps do I need to take to achieve this outside of Terminal which is not recommended?
2/ Can I make a new TM back up from scratch on another external drive and , if I have bad sectors yet to be cured, will this be useful?

!/ Right click doesn't produce a delete option in the menu and when I simply drag it to the trash I get a yellow triangle window which says, 'The Item ".....InProgress" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.'
2/ I have a TM back up. My iPhoto & iTunes are on a separate external and this is backed up with TM. Both are separately backed up with CCC. Oh and I occasionally drag and copy important files to another drive.
Thus far I have not lost data but what may well be a failing hard drive is making life difficult. Daily kernel panic re-boots, TM can restore but not make new back ups nor be verified or repaired etc etc

You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.
