Time Capsule won't connect to internet, Airport Utility

Tonight we lost power, and ever since our Time Capsule been out of commission.  The cable modem is working when I directly connect it to my computer via the ethernet cable.  I've unplugged the Time Capsule several times.  When I plug it back in the amber light comes on solid for about 30 seconds, then goes off.  I have tried the hard reset by putting a pin in the reset button while plugging the Time Capsule in.  The amber light will flash, but then I'll remove the pin and the amber light comes on for the same 30 seconds, then goes off again.    It is not findable by Airport Utility.
Someone please tell me my Time Capsule isn't dead...

Someone please tell me my Time Capsule isn't dead...
Sorry but more than likely it is.. If the LED goes off completely there is no power.. the LED will always be on and doing something the whole time the TC is powered unless it fails.
What model is it? How old?
30sec is a long time for the power supply to run before failure.. put your hand on it and feel if the hard disk is starting up.. you will feel the vibration.. if you put your ear to it, you should hear the fan start up, within a couple of seconds of power on.. and turn off again at around 30sec mark..
Observe also the ethernet connectivity LEDs.. do they go green.. during startup they should all flash green briefly and then one of them should come on. Try leaving out the ethernet and see if just wireless works.
But all of that will prove is working or not.. if dead check age.. less than 3years and still have apple care on a computer, Apple will replace it. Otherwise you can get it fixed. but not via Apple, they will not open them.

  • Airport Extreme/Time Capsule won't connect to internet

When my 10-year old Linksys router died 10 days ago, I bought an Airport Extreme 802.11n. I installed it and got internet access (My operating system is Mountain Lion and I have Comcast Cable Internet). I could access a USB-connected hard drive, but couldn’t get Time Machine to work.  I was able to get my wireless printer to work when connected by USB to the Airport Extreme.
Then, a few days ago, Apple suddenly introduced the new Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac with built in 2 TB hard drive.  Since I could still return the previous Airport Extreme, I bought the 802.11ac, unplugged the previous version, and followed the directions to install the new 802.11ac.  I used the same network name, and – I thought – the same network password.  But I could not connect to the internet.  Kept saying that I did not have the right password – even though Keychain seems to confirm the password I used.
So, I unplugged the 802.11ac and plugged in the older 802.11n and that instantly restored internet access (my wife uses our network and needs internet access).
What to do? Probably return the 802.11ac. But does anyone have any thoughts on some sure-fire way to install the 802.11ac and get internet access? I see there is an app for installing via my iPad2.  Perhaps I could install it and set up a separate network/internet connection and then log on to that with our other devices?
I installed the 802.11ac using the Airport Utility in updated Mountain Lion (Version 10.8.4). The Apple “Software Update” on my Macbook says no updates available, but perhaps there is some separate updated Airport Utility I should use.  If so, where is it?  Would appreciate any help from someone familiar with the new 802.11ac.

I did the power recycle, as the airport utility recommended, several times.  Also, when I reconnected the earlier 802.11n, it locked onto the internet immediately.  So, the problem does not appear to have been with the cable modem or the internet provider.  It could have been with the router (Time Capsule) but I repowered it too.  Most likely I made some mistake with the configuration.  When I tried to log onto the internet, it said my password was incorrect.  But as I mentioned, keynote confirmed the password I was using.
When I switched from the 802.11n to the 802.11ac, I used the same network name and - I thought - the same password.  Perhaps I should have set up the network with a new name and password.  The Apple set-up instructions are pretty vague about the steps to take in switching from from a pre-existing network or changing network names and passwords.  Anyone have experience with this, which I assume would be the norm in most installations?

  • Time Capsule won't connect to internet

Just bought one to use as a joint hard drive for the two office macs and to use to connect wirelessly to the net. I've connected it by ethernet through the BT wireless 2wire router (the wireless function doesn't work on it - it's broke)
In the menu bar the airport signal is showing three bars so I'm guessing this means a weaker signal but it won't let my mac connect to the internet but will allow the other mac one on, only occasionally
    dumping it off.
Is this a common problem? Is there anything i can do to boost the signal?
Both mac's have leopard, mine is the last model (white one) the other is the new one. Could this be a factor?
Or am i doomed to have wires all over my office for eternity?
Any help would be much appreciated

Sam - I had the same issue & had to do two things (as directed by tech support via phone): the name you assign to time capsule should be 6 characters or less with no punctuation (so the default Mike's Time Capsule name that Airport Utility gives is not good), and more importantly, as mentioned in several posts in these forums, power cycle your cable modem so it can pick up a new IP address. My tech support agent had me leave it unplugged for 10-15 minutes for good measure - also beware of a lithium ion backup battery in some VoIP modems - you'll need to look for this if the modem lights are still shining after you unplug it from AC power.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to internet, says ethernet isn't connected

I have the 2013 Time Capsule + Airport. I tried setting it up as normal, connecting the ethernet cord to the WAN port and to my charter modem. During setup it sticks on the screen saying that the ethernet cord isn't connected. I have done everything trying to fix it. I've reset the modem, the time capsule, tried to redo the set up, tried skipping the setup and power cycling the sytem. I've unplugged the modem for an hour, turned off wireless to all laptops, unplugged the time capsule, and then powered the modem on and let it run for over half an hour. Then I started the time capsule, let it run for half an hour. Tried to see if it could connect to the internet, nothing. It keeps flashing amber. The ethernet cord works, as does the modem, as I can still use my old Belkin router that I was hoping to replace with this time capsule. It's just the time capsule. I'm losing my mind trying to get this thing to work. My modem doesn't have a reset button, so that won't do it. If there are any terminal commands that might fix it I'm open to trying that as well. Anything, at all, would be helpful, because I have no idea why this thing won't work.

Is your charter modem also a router?
When you plug the ethernet cord in, does the ethernet connectivity light come on.. both on the modem and on the TC port.. ?
Try setting up the TC in total isolation.
Reset it to factory.. the full method.. ie power off the TC.. Hold in reset.. power on the TC, without releasing reset. Keep holding in reset for 5-10 sec until the main LED goes to rapid flash mode.. then release it.
Do not plug between the TC and modem.. but you can run the cable to the computer..
Do a full manual setup.. this is a bit tricky.
After a full reset the TC will come backup in router mode with an IP address of 10.0.1.1 and the ethernet plugged into the computer should show 10.0.1.2
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local.. it is important.
    Now open the airport utility.
    Go to configure other.
Type in the IP address. (Password is not needed after a reset but if you do it is public)
Now you will get the manual setup screen.
Go to the base station page and give your TC a simple name.. eg TCGen5
These are my setup which is older one.
Go to the internet tab and choose dhcp.
    No picture required I hope.
Go to the wireless page and setup wireless. In your case TCGen5 is also a good wireless name.
Or you can give separate names to the two bands. TC24ghz for 2.4ghz
And TC5ghz for the 5ghz band.
Now finally the most important screen.. Network.
Is the modem a pure modem.. no router.. pick the top option.. DHCP and NAT.
Is the modem a router as well, pick the bottom option. Off (Bridge Mode).
Then do update of the TC..
Plug it into the Modem.. WAN port of the TC.. make sure the ethernet connectivity led come on..
Open the Airport utility and see if it has got an IP on Internet tab.. no luck.. take the TC back to apple for testing. Faulty out of the box is happening.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to internet at home but works at Apple Store. Internet connection is fine through ethernet - any ideas?

A few days ago my Time Capsule stopped connecting to the internet at home. My internet connection is fine when I connect directly via ethernet. However when I plug the ethernet into the Time Capsule, it doesn't progress past the solid amber light. Doing a hard reset doesn't do anything. I took it to the Genius Bar two seperate times, and both times they were able to get it working there, but when I get it home it won't work. Any ideas of what the problem might be?

Try resetting your broadband modem.  Depending on the model of modem, that can be as easy as removing power for a few moments.  If that doesn't work, remove power and wait 15 minutes.  Further reset steps can involve pressing a "reset" button or removing a battery if the modem has one.  In the worst case, your ISP may need to edit its settings to update to the MAC address of the new router.  If they won't or can't do that, powering down the modem for 16 to 36 hours can reset the connection.

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • TIme Capsule won't connect wirelessly after restart??  HELP!

I plug in time capsule and it shows up on Airport Utility. I enter the information it asks for joining an existing wireless network. We have Fios through Verizon and are running a Verizon wireless router. After seeing my wireless network it asks for the Wireless Security choice. It automatically chooses WEP 128bit so I assume this is correct. It also automatically puts in my password (not sure why) but I go ahead and retype the password for our wireless network. Then this is what I get after several minutes:
"*Airport Utility was unable to find your apple wireless device after restarting.*
The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."
Then when I run Airport Utility the Time Capsule no longer shows up and the only way to get it back is to push the little pin hole reset button in the back for 5 seconds to completely reset the unit. I have done this no less than 5 times.
Please advise...any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jenn

In case anyone has this same problem and ends up reading my post. I, through the help of a very tech savy friend, was able to solve the problem for the most part.
Here is, from what I can remember, he did.
We plugged the TC into one of the LAN ports on the back of my wireless router. We then set the TC up on it's own as a source for connecting to the internet wirelessly. (He had to go into my settings VIA verizon and pull down some codes to make this work.) Once the TC showed up as it's own wireless network on my computer, we were able to do the back up through Time Machine no problem. We ended up just disabling our old verizon wireless router on the server but are keeping it plugged in.
    Hope that helps.

  • HT3728 When I reconnect my Time Capsule after a factory reset, the Airport Utility shows ther message"Unexpected error. Try again." I also get this if I redo the factory reset.

The Time Capsule is not providing a wireless connection.
When I reconnect my Time Capsule after a factory reset, the Airport Utility shows ther message"Unexpected error. Try again." I also get this if  I cancel the Airport Utility app and restart it. I performed the factory reset again, restarted the Airport Utility and received the same error. What are the steps to debug and fix the wireless problem?
My Time Capsule is connected to my FIOS router and to my Mac Mini. I am still able to connect to the Internet from the Mini via ethernet. It seems that the Time Capsule acts as a bridge for the ethernet connections between Internet to FIOS, FIOS to Time Capsule, and Time Capsule to Mac Mini.

Which model TC is this? The A1xxx number from the base please.
Try the setup in full isolation from the network.. so unplug the TC from the network.. and turn off wireless in the mini.. so you have mini--ethernet--lan port TC.. and nothing else.
    Do the factory reset.
Now check if TC comes up in airport utility..
If it fails, turn on ipv6 local link.. if you are using 6.3 utility this could be necessary.
Still fails, try loading the v5 utility.. you will need to plug the computer back into the FIOS to get internet. Then depending on OS.. Lion according to your profile.. you can just down the utility.. ML takes more steps.
    See below.
Do you have an iphone or ipad.. download the airport utility app and use those for the setup.. that can sometimes work better.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.

  • Time Capsule won't connect PC to the Internet

I'm sure there's something simple that I'm not doing but I can't get my PC to pick up the Internet from my Time Capsule. The TC is wirelessly connected to a BT HomeHub and is backing up my MacBook over Time Machine but why won't my PC, which is connected to the TC via an Ethernet cable, pick up the Internet?
Am I trying to get it to do something that just can't be done? Once TC is joined to another network, can it not then act as a bridge via an ethernet cable to provide internet access?!
I've wasted many an hour trying to get this to work, but to no avail.

Did you happen to upgrade to 7.6.3 on the TC?
That would be pretty funny if the new firmware causes all non-apple wireless products to drop out.
I think we could get a very big fight going over such a thing.
Although I don't know the reason.. apart from that dreadful firmware.
Apple names are a problem.. why it should hit now after working fine I am not sure.
But you need to do a full factory reset to the TC.
Then give it all SMB compatible names.. (ie comply with windows networking).
That means short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That will include TC network name, wireless names (different name for 5ghz) and hard disk share name.
You should use WPA2 Personal security. With a pure alphanumeric passkey of 10-20 characters.
Use fixed wireless (radio in Apple Speak) channels. For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping. 11, 6, 1 and test them in that order. 5ghz doesn't usually matter so much but test down low.. say channel 40 and up high 157.. or ones near that in your country.
Tell me if you still have issues..
And go back to 7.6.1 firmware. Hold down the option key and select previous firmware if you are on 7.6.3

  • Time Capsule won't connect to the internet

I just bought a Time Capsule and was told that I simply had to connect it to my modem and it would "self connect". However when I tried this, the amber light kept flashing for 40 minutes before I gave up. What am I doing wrong?

There is no reason for the TC to not hand out IP addresses unless you have it in the wrong mode..
    Please do a factory reset.
    Power off the TC..
Hold in the reset button, and apply power with your third arm..
Keep holding in reset the whole time.. and wait for about 10sec after power on for the TC Led to flash rapidly.
Release the reset and wait for the TC to restart.
Does the ethernet port on the TC and on the computer turn on their connectivity LEDS.. tiny LED on the port of the TC. Usually similar on the computer. If not the cable is no good.. get another one.
If the connectivity LED has come one, check the IP address again.
Regardless of all this it still should have worked on the ipad. After the reset search and connect to a wireless signal that says time capsule.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to ISP

TC won't connect to ISP (Charter) after resetting modem due to lost Charter connection. Have reset TC using all methods suggested in troubleshooting (pushing TC reset for one, five seconds, unplugging and pushing reset during plug in). What gives?

Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, Time Capsule (TC), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the TC; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, TC, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the TC; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Time Capsule won't connect to BT Home Hub

I have just moved house and have set up a new BT Home hub today.
The internet is working as is the wireless printer but I want to be able to connect the Time Capsule to the BT internet network in order to make back ups.
I have gone through Airport Utility and downloaded the 6.0 software but it is still not connecting.
Any ideas on where I am going wrong? Do I have to create a new netowrk?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thank you

Connect to the homehub directly so you can download the utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Once you have it downloaded.. plug the TC directly into the iMac by ethernet.. No other connections.. no wireless on the imac. Turn it off so the only active network is ethernet.
Press and hold the reset for 10sec. When the TC restarts it should come up on the iMac at default settings..
Start the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.
    Go to internet tab.
Go to connection sharing.. select off bridged mode. Update the TC.
Then plug the TC back into the home hub.. it should now be accessible by ethernet or wireless from the imac.
Post the details of homehub IP and TC ip if it doesn't work.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to anything

I was using my time capsule for about a year and never had an issue until I moved. Now that I'm in the new house, no devices will connect to it except my MacBook Pro. Hard wired LAN or over WIFI my smart TV won't connect neither will my PlayStation or my iPhones or iPad. Nothing. Again... My computer connects over WIFI but nothing else. And nothing works directly hooked up from the Time Capsule to any device via LAN cable.

TC needs a full factory reset when put in a new network.
It remembers far too much from the previous setup.
    So.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Do do a new setup .. if the modem you have is cable pure type modem.. the TC must be in bridge.. you MUST turn off the cable modem for 20min for the MAC address capture to time out.. then power up the modem and power up the TC which is in DHCP + NAT mode.
If the modem is a router.. put the TC in bridge mode..
If you run into troubles give us more info.
what modem.. make and model and type.
What model is the TC.. A1xxx from the base.
    What version firmware?

  • Time Capsule won't connect to network after factory reset

    Hello
I have reset my time capsule back to factory settings, After this was completed the time capsule will no longer connect to my network.
When airport utility is launched the app will search for the time capsule. Then when the app is gathering information at the reading previous settings stage air port utility quits unexpectedly (There is a report, this can be attached if any one needs it)
The light on the time capsule is flashing amber.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Im running a mac book pro with lion 10.7.3
    Cheers Dan

If you reset the Time Capsule back to Factory Default Settings, the Time Capsule is now broadcasing a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxxx.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and make sure that you are logged onto that network....no password is required.
    Then, open AirPort Utility.
You should see the xxxxxx number displayed in the upper left hand corner of the window when you click on Other AirPort Base Stations
Or, if you do not want to connect using wireless for the configuration, temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the back of the Time Capsule and then open AirPort Utility.
If you still experience issues, check to make sure that you are following Apple's instructions for the default reset in this support document:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
We have also seen reports from users about difficulties with the new version of AirPort Utility.
Download and install the full feature version of AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to see if that will work.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to Arris Modem?

I'm trying to connect my Time Capsule to an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem. The modem works with my gf's Belkin router, and I can plug directly into the modem and get Internet access, but my Time Capsule will not work with the modem. The green light comes on, the signal is broadcast, all wireless devices in the house connect to the signal, but nothing connects to the Internet. I've tried the turn the modem off (and take out the battery) trick a dozen times with no luck. Any ideas on what to try next? The two just don't like each other.

Leave the modem off overnight.. with the cable disconnected. But you often need the modem off at least 15min for the dhcp at the ISP to reset. Try for increasingly long times..
You can also ring the ISP and ask them to reset the port because you have changed the router.. they should be prepared to help... Make sure the TC is the only thing connected.
I am presuming the Arris is only a modem without a router in it.
There are other tricks we use to get this working but the TC has such a limited setup presented to the end user there is nothing else you can do.
Just make sure the TC is set to dhcp on the ethernet WAN setup.. and has the connectivity leds come on when you plug it in.
Otherwise bridge the TC and use it plugged into the belkin.
