Time Capsule worked some now invisible to computer

DAY ONE:
I just bought a used TC, model A1254, a very early one, 1TB. Came only with unit and power cord, no software. Airport software I downloaded from Apple.com seemed to work and when I swapped out the ethernet cords, I had internet access through the TC. Green light on the TC.
In order to access Time Machine, I had to do a hard reset on the unit since the seller did not and it was asking me for his password. This also worked and I had internet access. Green light.
Then the software suggested I update to the latest firmware, which I did (can not remember the numbers but the old one was only off by one version). But the TC never came back online. All the troubleshooting in the manual (which I found online, though it's for newer models) assumes you have a blinking amber light. But I have a steady amber light which supposedly means all is well and it's in the process of connecting.
I did another hard reset which didn't seem to take. I did a factory reset as suggested by the manual (unplug unit, push reset button and hold down as you plug it in again). I power cycled it. I rebooted my computer. Finally I just let it sit for a couple hours hoping it was merely slow. No luck.
Airport Utility tells me there is no unit visible. It was visible before even when I had amber light (used to take a minute or so to get to green). When I went to Airport it told me there was no ethernet, that the wires were not connected. But they were fine before and I did double check them. No wireless network available either. The other computer on the network (G4, connected via ethernet) does not have internet when my computer does not.
I did a swap back to my old router (doesn't have wireless, just ethernet) and everything works fine and ethernet is connected.
DAY TWO:
Decided to try the TC and boom everything worked (can not recall color of light). Well internet at least (was connected via ethernet; wireless network visible). I went to set up the TC and found that the previous owner had left all his data on, plus the name of the unit.
Did the lowest level of erase and got an error at the end. Managed to mostly get rid of the previous name and add my own but data still there. Did a one pass erase which seemed to work fast then hung at the end part ("finishing"). Reading about it told me that this erase can take hours so I let it do its thing all day but no progress visible.
Light steady amber but internet worked fine and TC was visible in Airport Utilities. Yes I messed up and failed to downgrade my firmware during this period.
Husband came home and asked me to set up his internet. I hadn't plugged his cord in to the TC. In doing this, I acccidently disconnected the WAN cord from the DSL modem. Since then, despite correcting the error of course, the TC has not worked at all. No internet, not visible in Airport Utility. Steady amber light. Around this point, the unit has been making clicking noises for several minutes at a time, usually after being powered up. Plugging back into my old router makes it all work fine.
Did hard resets (a dozen plus). Factory resets (several). Followed directions in previous discussions of this topic (mostly here but a few elsewhere). All sorts of complex unplug this and that. Nothing.
DAY THREE (today):
Wrote seller who swears that the unit worked fine for him and he never heard noises. He is willing to refund my money but I'd like to give it all the chances I can before doing that. Among other reasons, if it's something on my end then if I buy another one I won't be able to use it either.
Tried absolutely everything I could find in these and similar forums. Powered down everything (including the G4), got rid of networks and saved passwords, trashed preference files. Rebooted my computer.
Tried a "config other" in Airport Utility several times. I have the TC IP address (which oddly was present even when I couldn't see the TC, though it now occurs to me that perhaps it was my G4). Anyway, this didn't work.
QUESTIONS:
Is the TC bad and should I return it?
Is this fixable? If so, how?
Will a different TC give me similar errors?
Where did I go wrong? ("buying used" is not an acceptable answer :-))
Thanks!

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply.
I've done the factory default resets maybe half a dozen times. I always held the pen in the hole after plugging the TC in for long enough for the amber light to blink fast. The instant I let go, it turns solid amber and stays that way (for hours). It does not become visible on Airport Utility and I do not have internet service. Although I have an ethernet cable hooked up (the same one that works just fine on my other router and has for years), if I look in Airport or Network settings it tells me ethernet is not functioning and that it is not plugged in. Wireless does not work either and the Airport menu can not find my network. The couple times the TC did work I had both ethernet and wireless functioning and fully visible (and with the router it always works right and shows up where it is supposed to).
I realize that there is a problem and that most do work. I just don't know if the problem is something I've done wrong or that I can fix. Like when my printer wasn't working when I got my iMac and switched from the G4 and nothing I did was fixing it...I upgraded my OS (it was writing over the old one that was needed) and now it works perfectly. Had I junked it and gotten a new one, it wouldn't have worked either. I simply had to overwrite the couple bad OS files.
In this case, the TC worked well for the seller (so he claims and my gut feeling is that he's legit) and stopped working when it got to me. So perhaps it's my computer or it was damaged in transit. I just don't know.
If I can be sure that it's never going to work right, then I'll send it back.
Thanks!

My time capsule worked for several weeks and now is not backing up. Tells me backup disk not available? Any suggestions?

    This is a lion bug..
Generally just rebooting the TC will get it back. Otherwise you need to reset the TC and redo its setup.
Tell us a bit more.. but there is as yet no work around or fix for lion.
Certain things help.. but wireless is also a weak link. It will generally work better by ethernet.
Try and get back if it is still bugging you.. I can suggest some other things.. but I do not know of or read a bullet yet.
(Snow and TC firmware 7.5.2 which I run do not have this issue.. so the bug was introduced with Lion and 7.6 firmware)

  • HT1178 I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to

I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. There are many computers within my department. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but was unsure of which option to click. I clicked "I want to create a new wireless network". At the onset the instructions said I needed to connect with an ethernet cable, which I did. But I have no desire to connect to the internet, print from it, or have others access. I did deselect guest options, and I did put in passwords. But at the end of the process I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue."
I was worried this would shut me down and I wouldn't be able to continue to work. I don't necessarily need to connect wirelessly. It is connected via ethernet cable from machine to device.
Can you advise me how to continue? Did I choose the wrong options?

I bought an external hard drive called "Seagate Backup Plus" From the Apple store to back up everything on my computer and anything new on my computer. It came with Time Machine. The external hard drive disk had 1 or 2 Terabytes. Time Machine says "next backup: When disk is connected." "Oldest backup: July 2, 2014." & Also "Latest back July, 2."

  • Time capsule settings changed now can't view files

    Hi,
I changed my settings on my time capsule accidently and now I can't view my files. I click on the time Capsule in windows explorer and all I get is .com.apple.airport.sharepoint. I got this once before but can't remember how to fix it. I can see my TC files from my Ipad but not from my Windows 7 computer.
    Help!!

The address is typed into the only place you can type addresses .. that is the address bar..
If it cannot reach the TC hard disk then you need to do some more fundamental checks.
    1. Reset the TC to factory and start over.. Use all SMB names. As already stated.. all names must be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Do it from a Mac or iOS with airport app.
    2. Plug the windows computer into the TC by ethernet. Make sure the LED turns on .. connectivity on both the computer and the TC. Make sure the PC has an IP address from the TC by opening a command prompt and typing.. ipconfig
It should come up 10.0.1.x (x being any number).
    3. To make sure you have bonjour simply load it again.. easiest is to download and install the windows version of Airport Utility.. http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
If it refuses to install or say it is already loaded then you already have it.
    4. Make sure you set the file sharing page to Guest access on and workgroup to WORKGROUP.
    5. Now type the name or the IP again into the address bar of windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress.
You do not type what I put.. you type the actual name or actual IP. Clearly \\TCIPaddress will not work.. unless you named the TC TCIPaddress which would be rather odd. For example if the TC is default.. 10.0.1.1 then you type \\10.0.1.1 .. just to be clear.

  • Since installation of Mavericks, Time Capsule works very slowly, and the next backup of 236 GM will take nearly 30 days. What can I do to get backup more rapidly ?

Since the installation of Mavericks, Time capsule works very slowly and will need 30 days or more to produce a complete backup of about 200 GB. What can I do to get a complete backup more rapidly ?

What setup is the TC now.. ? what model and what firmware? Maverick seems to need 7.6.4 on the older TC.. and latest firmware on the AC version.
Is it in router or bridge mode? Do not use wireless only.. join a wireless network.
Is the computer connected by wireless or ethernet? I strongly recommend a test by ethernet.. with wireless in the computer turned off. If it is still very slow something is majorly wrong.. but I need the info I asked for to troubleshoot further.

I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.
    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • HT203177 My backups using Time Machine to my Time Capsule worked fine until a week ago. Since then it gets stuck on "Preparing ...". I have left it preparing overnight and it doesn't get past this stage.  What else can I do? Bob

My backups using Time Machine to my Time Capsule worked fine until a week ago. Since then it gets stuck on "Preparing ...". I have left it preparing overnight and it doesn't get past this stage.  What else can I do?

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

  • Can a time capsule work wireless

Can a time capsule work wireless

iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone back up to iTunes on your computer.....or.....to iCloud.
They do not and cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.
If you then back up your computer to the Time Capsule, all the backups in iTunes are backed up on the Time Capsule....in case your computer hard drive fails, is stolen, etc.
Your computer can back up to the Time Capsule using wireless or via an Ethernet connection.
See this Apple support document for all the information on how iOS devices back up.

  • Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

It is an extra drive that is being used for backup. That's what it's intended for. It's not really intended to be used as a storage drive, but you can use it in that fashion. However, backup and storage should be kept separate. If you need extra storage then buy another external drive but one the connects directly to your computer. Use the Time Capsule with Time Machine as your backup solution.

  • Does time capsule work on bluetooth?

I also want to know how to change it's owner's name
    Thanks!

No, you can do it in complete isolation.
Press the reset and start from a new setup.
Or use a soft reset so you can reset just the passwords..
I am not sure what you mean exactly by changing the owners name.
I presume you have bought it second hand and it is Fred Blogs' Time Capsule or some other dreadful non-SMB compliant title..
    Do a full factory reset.
Just press reset.. and keep holding it in whilst powering on the TC.. wait another 10sec or so until the front LED flashes rapidly.. the TC is now back to factory default.
You can then simply connect using the airport utility and put in whatever name you like.
I recommend short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.. but that is because spaces and special characters are illegal in most networks.

  • Does Time Capsule works as a External Hard Drive?

Does Time Capsule works as a External Hard Drive?

The Time Capsule works as a network drive.
An external drive connects to your Mac using either the USB or FireWire ports.
If your real question is to ask whether you can store other data on the Time Capsule drive....you can.

  • How does the time capsule work?

I am unfamiliar with this device. Can anyone explain how this works? I have a Gateway NV79, an IPad 2 and an IPhone. Will the time capsule work with these devices and a printer(Officejet Pro 8600)? If so, how does it do this? I am also wondering how it works as a router? Does it provide the internet access itself or do you have to have a separate source of internet to link to the device?

A Time Capsule is a wireless router and a hard drive in one package. It does not have a modem built in, so a modem and broadband service is required if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
As a wireless router, the Time Capsule can provide connections for up to 50 users and 3 wired Ethernet devices. If you need more Ethernet connections, a switch can be easily added to the Time Capsule for that purpose.
Your printer could connect to the Time Capsule using either a wired Ethernet connection or wireless connection
Apple's literature does a good job of describing the product. Be sure to click the links in the upper right hand corner of the main page to learn more about the Backup capabilities, Wireless performance, and detailed Specifications.

  • Can i access my data on time capsule from some other network

can i access my data on time capsule from some other network that is my data at home from office over internet

There is plenty of info out there if you google..
Here is a summary I just put into another thread.
Remote access has been added back into iCloud that was in MobileMe..
Read the info on setting it up from cloud service.. BTMM.
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
If you want to do it without the cloud service, you have one major issue.. the public IP for WAN..
The internal IP of the TC.. which will default to 10.0.1.1 btw.. is irrelevant. It is the IP of the WAN which you use to access the TC over the internet. And here you have a problem.. the TC does not include dyndns service. So unless you have a static IP address from your ISP, this will cause you grief.
(If it is offered by your ISP.. get a static IP.. that eliminates all the issues.. and is far superior. Even dyndns service has issues if your public IP rotates too often. It is generally an extra cost item and requires a business account but some ISP offer it cheap or even free.. I joined an ISP that offered static ip for free because it gives me the ability to remote access my network without all the hassles you will see below.)
There are ways around it.. setting up your own domain for instance.
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
But it is easier to simply use a different router.. almost all of them have dyndns service available.. place the TC behind the router in bridge and forward port 548 TCP to it.
This is a bit old but still relevant.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note .. there is no ftp, http, ssh (there is actually but it isn't accessible), or any other service to allow connection other than AFP.. so you must use a Mac in remote location to access the TC.
The setup for the two methods is slightly different in the TC.. in the first instance, you need to turn on WAN access via disk sharing page in the manual setup.
In the second case you do not need this.
Remember security and put strong passwords on the disk. There are still security questions about this.
If security is important.. there is a third and better (IMO) method and that is vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router as TC also missed out on that.. establish a vpn with the main router and that will allow you access to your network.. you will also then be able to use SMB remotely not just AFP.
Also if this office is a large company they should be running a firewall, which would block your access to home. You should check your IT admin people for what is allowed.. generally the only acceptable method is vpn otherwise you can drag viruses and trojans right into the network without the firewall catching them.

  • I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

    Please do not do this.
The Time Capsule was designed for your backups.....not as an everyday hard drive. Access to the Time Capsule is slow.
If there is any loss of connection between iPhoto and the iPhoto library when you are reading or writing, the entire iPhoto library is easily corrupted.
The chances of corruption are even more likely if you are using wireless on the computer.
And....even if you decide to risk this....if you move your "original" iPhoto library to the Time Capsule.....how will you make backups of the library?
The only copy of the library will be on the Time Capsule....you have no backups.....when, not if, the Time Capsule has a problem.
Simply stated, I would never do this with any important data that you cannot afford to lose. Please post in the iPhoto support area if you need to confirm this.
    iPhoto
If you do want an idea of how to move your iPhoto library correctly, post back and we can help.
