TIme Capsule  working with Airport Extream

Hello I have a home office in a two story home with a MacBook Pro, IMac, AirPort Extreme for my cable modem. I have on order a Time Capsule. The AirPort Extreme works great for our two story home, very well on the bottom level, and has about 70 to signal strength on the upper level of the home. I would like to unplug the AirPort Extreme in the office on the lower level, set up the TIme Capsule in the office for the lower level, perform all backups that are needed. Then take the AirPort Extreme and move it upstairs to help make my wifi much stronger upstairs and around my property. Any ideas? Good idea, bad idea? Things I need to do first or think about? Thank you.

Hi Bob, another question for you if you have time. Time Capsule is on it's way via mail and I had been going over this set pre set up in my head and you said something that made me think more about the Airport Extreme.
You said, "You'll need to reconfigure the AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network"
I'm going to start to learn about the correct way to do this in the next day or two, but my question is.
Should I reset the Airport Extreme back to it's "factory settings" pre setting up the Time Capsule.
Then perform the work of the back up of the Time Capsule like you had suggested.
Then take the Airport Extreme up stairs and start the set up of "extending the network?" with a fresh Airport Extreme.
Or leave the Airport Extreme as is, move up stairs, and "just extend" as it will already be configured to my Imac/MacBook Pro Iphone, ect?
Thank you again, and I hope that I was a clear enough.

just installed a new time capsule and i want to use my airport express to extend my wireless range....time capsule working with existing devices at this time...but i am not able to get airport utility to recognize the airport express.....????

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

  • Will the airport devices and time capsule work with telstras mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 753S Mobile Hotspot)??

will the airport devices and time capsule work with telstras mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 753S Mobile Hotspot)??

Yes. There are 2 ways you could use these devices:
Wirelessly 'join' the network. This would be slower and doesn't offer extending functionality.
Use an Ethernet cable (through Powerline if you can't run a cable). This is faster and offers extending functionality. I would recommend using Bridge Mode if possible.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

It should do. Depends on how you define an 'older' TC. As long as your SW is up to date and the TC has relatively recent Firmware etc then there shouldn't be an issue.
Are you having a problem with yours or just curious before you upgrade the OS?

  • How do I make airport time capsule work with Linksys cisco router?

    Hi all.
I bought an airport time capsule 3T and want to connect it to the internet, using a macbook with OS X 10.9.2. Currently I am using a Linksys Cisco router model WAG54G2.
I followed the steps of the setup airport guide: Connected the WAN port of the airport with an ethernet port on the router, plugged in the power cable, filled in the internet username and password. In Airport Utility I can see the airport and the internet icon, both with green dots most of the time. But it seems to disconnect every minute or so, green dots turning orange and the status light on the airport flashing orange. The internet light on the linksys also goes on and off. When the internet is on, it is quite slow.
    Advice is welcome!
    Kees

No guarantees here. AirPort Utility 6.3.1 is a big drop down from the 5.x versions in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 9-10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click on Time Capsule.
The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule.
As soon as you click on the Time Capsule, AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network....and probably suggest that the Time Capule will be configured to "extend"....which is wrong.
Click the Other Options button at the lower left
Click Add to an existing network
Next to Connect To.....select the wireless network name from the drop down list....if it appears. Otherwise type in the exact name of the wireless network.
    Click Next
Confirm any settings again and wait to see if AirPort Utility 6.3.1 will allow the Time Capsule to join the wireless network.
You have about a 1 in 5 chance that this will occur.
    Post back on your results.

  • Will a AirPort Time Capsule work with Yosemite?

I need to replace my external backup and also need to boost my Verison DSL signal (which is the fastest network that services our rural area).   I recently upgraded to Yosemite and I'm considering an AirPort Time Capsule.   Have all of the bugs/glitches with Yosemite and AirPort been resolved?

The current version of the Time Capsule will be 2 years old in a few months, and Apple traditionally introduces new products in June, so if you are not in a big rush, it might pay to wait to see what improvements will be offered in the newer version.
There will likely be a few more updates coming for Yosemite in the next few months to help address current issues.  Remember that it took 3-4 updates for the previous operating system.....Mavericks.....before things seemed to settle down.
As far a "boosting" your current network is concerned, a new product will not allow any faster connection than your current plan will allow, so that might be yet another reason to hold on for awhile, to see if your provider might be offering a faster connection plan in the near future.

  • My time capsule works with my laptop but not my iphones and states it has no internet connection even though it is working on my laptop.

I purchased a time capsule when I upgraded my iphone to the iphone 5 in November of 12.  The time capsule was very easy to set up and both phones and the laptop worked great. In March of this year, the iphones would no longer connect to the time capsule network.  When I would run the airport utility, I would see errors for no internet connection and no DNS servers.  The funny thing is that my laptop would wirelessly connect to the internet through the time capsule. I am currently on my laptop now but my phones don't work.  I am thinking that I updated software for both my phone and the time capsule so I tried reverting the software on the time capsule but it still gave me the same errors. If I hook the cable modem to my pc, it works, so I don't have an internet service provider issue. The issue seems to be with the airport device/time capsule. I have reset things to the factory default and didn't bother setting any password for the network but to no avail... If anyone knows what I can do to fix this, please assist... I am ready to give up on fixing it and revert back to my old wireless device. Thanks

Set it up with SMB compliant names.. that means, short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Set a different name for 2.4ghz and 5ghz..
Set security to WPA2 personal with pure alphanumeric password.. 10-20 characters is usually plenty.
Set wireless channel for 2.4ghz to manual and try channels 11, 6, 1 in that order.

  • Time Capsule works with MacBook Pro (Mavericks) but not with IOS devices?  recent problem starting March 1, 2015.

I have a Time Capsule version 7.7.3 (model A1470) which has worked fine for almost 2 years with all devices, Apple and otherwise.  As of beginning of this month, March 2015 - no longer works with a new IPAD mini 3 and 6-month old iPhone 6 (both updated as of last night) BUT still works fine with MacBook Pro (Mavericks 10.9.5) and Epson printer XP-600.
On both IOS devices Airport Utility shows the Time Capsule and shows green light connection to internet, but never does the connection. The little status circle just keeps going round and never shows the Wifi rainbow symbol. both devices work fine on other Wifi's.  Airport Utility on iPhone actually connects enough to check on Airport base station's firmware 7.7.3 and says it is up to date!  but sadly stays on LTE.
    Have tried resetting, replugging etc...
Also, tried checking on updates.  Nothing shows in Airport Utility. When I try to go to see past updates ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware to see if updated, there is no Airport in the Apple folder?
    A mystery...

Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup. see details below.
Here is the typical list of things you should try.. and if this doesn't help post again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer or perhaps it is better using iOS on the phone or ipad currently having issues.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. For iOS the fixed channels particularly for 2.4ghz has helped.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue. This is a problem for a TC in bridge mode.
If this is of no help.. what modem do you have? What function other than modem does it have.. ie none or router??
How is the TC connected into the network? What function does it have? Router or bridge for example.
Post a few screenshots of the setup.

  • Will Time Capsule conflict with Airport Extreme?

I just purchased a Time Capsule but after reading the discussion board it looks like it might conflict or override my Airport Extreme?  Also, if I do connect it, will it ever erase any information on its own without me manually deleting?  I think I'm experiencing buyers remorse. My main purpose is to free up space on my iMac. I could have just purchased a simple external hard drive but this seemed like a better choice at the time. Help!

Depending on the age of the Mac a USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt drive would be a much better choice.. as an addition to the TC.. TC is still needed if you have no backup. If you store your files on the external drive think about where you want them to be backed up to.
it looks like it might conflict or override my Airport Extreme?  Also, if I do connect it, will it ever erase any information on its own without me manually deleting?
No the TC and airport can live happily together.. just decide which is router and which is bridge.. as far as possible connect together with ethernet.. but you can wirelessly connect as well.
A TC is a backup device not really a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up.. but it will not erase anything without you deliberately erasing it..
Perhaps you mean the way Time Machine works.. if you erase something on the disk.. TM will eventually erase it from the backups.. this is very true.. but that is specific to TM and backups.. not to stuff you store on the TC. That is not erased unless you do it deliberately.
I think you should read over Pondini's FAQ to understand a bit more about TM and TC.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I learned a heap from them.. the home pages as well.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Although TM is loaded on every Mac since Leopard.. and very convenient to use.. it isn't the only show in town.. and other utilities can do disk images and incremental backups.. without half the issues that TM does. Although more limited in restore potential as well.

  • Will the latest 2 TB Time Capsule work with Windows 7

I purchased a latest 2 TB Time Capsule
My computer Engineer says, it will not work with my Windows 7 PC.
He says I should purchase a Mac computer for using it
My aim is to have some important files, movies and music files in it and use it as
    my  iPad accessory.
    Kindly let me know

    Your computer engineer needs demoting..
The TC is SMB compliant when setup properly.
Press reset 10sec and redo the setup.
Download and install airport utility for windows. That will also install bonjour which helps things along.
Rename the TC and wireless names to short, no spaces pure alphanumeric characters.
    eg TC name.. TCgen4
    2.4ghz wireless name.. TC24ghz
5ghz wireless name.. TC5ghz (set the 5ghz name different on the advanced wireless page).
    Lock wireless to a/n - b/g
Lock wireless channels to 1, 6, or 11 as the only 3 non-overlapping channels.
On the disk page.. set the guest account to on with read and write permissions.. that makes life a bit easier. Obviously if security is a problem don't do it.. but TC is a home device.. and is so easy to hack into it is a joke.. so setting high security is seldom of value.
Make sure the workgroup is set correctly .. by default WORKGROUP.
Note the IP of the TC .. generally 10.0.1.1 and if it is running as the main router to the network, you can now open the TC via windows explorer by typing the ip or the TC name in the address bar thus.
\\TCgen4 or \\10.0.1.1 (Obviously if you use different name or IP then replace with those.)
To access the TC from ipad you need a file browser app.. just look it up.. the ipad does not actually natively work with the TC.. so ipad is actually more of an issue than windows.
Also note carefully .. there is no backup mechanism to save stuff on the TC.. it is a backup target not a NAS. It is made for Time Machine on a Mac not for storing files. They are also not exactly reliable. It is sealed.. there are no spare parts.. if it dies, apple will replace not fix it. And they tend to have a short life. If you trust your files to it.. one day they will all be gone.. make sure you back it up or only keep copies of files on it.

  • Canon printer into Time Capsule - works with macbook not imac - why?

    Hi all,
This has been up in the iMac section for a couple of days and no one has replied. I thought I'd post it in here as people with TC's may have come across this and know how to fix it. I originally thought it was an iMac fault - perhaps it still is! Anyway I hope I've not broken any rules by posting it in here, when its already else where, if so apologies in advance.
I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro (3 weeks old). I also have a time capsule and have plugged my Canon iP4500 into the USB port on the TC. I had, before getting the macbook, the printer printing wirelessly, with all the functionality that it should have using the airport on my iMac and the TC. Then after an upgrade of OS X, it suddenly stopped working wirelessly. I can not get it to work, no matter what I try - I've reset the printer settings in system prefs, reinstalled the drivers from the Canon web site, re-setting the TC - nothing works.
However it does work from my MacBook Pro! It has the same OS X version, the same printer drivers downloaded from the same site.
Obviously I'd like both computers to be able to print wirelessly - not sure what's going on with the iMac.
All help is very very appreciated.

I thought I'd search the hard disk and remove all files, drivers et al that I could find relating to the printer. Then reinstalled the up to date driver from the Canon website. (If I knew how / if it possible to post a screen grab of the printer window I would - so I've made a new page on my website - you can see screen grabs at: http://web.me.com/timhydes/Site/CanoniP4500_printerissues.html ).
This time the printer window pops us as per usual, then in the top half section where it shows the icon, the name of the file it should be printing, but underneath it says "No pages found!", in the status table in the bottom half it says "Printing" (see screen grab 1). If I leave it for a while, it changes the top half to "Printer Ready" and the status menu says "Stopped" (see screen grab 3).
If I click on hold, then resume I get a new window which says: "Operation Count not be completed" "client-error-not-possible" (see screen grab 2).
I've checked that there is printer ink, paper et al, and it still prints from my MacBook.
I wondered it this may shed some light on the issue from those more knowledgeable than my self.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

  • TIme Capsule Working with Corporate VPNs

I had a linksys prior to installing the TIme Capsule. The linksys worked with my companies VPN out of the box. The time Capsule does not. Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks

I had the same problem unfortunately. However, I was able to find some workarounds after a lot of investigation and research. I hope my fixes work for you.
For the first and easiest fix try this:
    1. Open up "Airport Utility" found applications\utilities\airport utility
    2. Select your time capsule then select "manual setup"
    3. Then select "Advanced"
    4. Then select "IPv6"
    5. From the drop down menu select "tunnel"
    6. Save and allow the TC to restart
This allowed me access with on VPN I work with. However, what type of VPN Client do you have? I had AT&T and my wife had iPASS which both required different solutions.
If my first solution doesn't work, I can offer further details depending on your VPN Client. Just let me know. Good luck!

  • Will Stardom's "Safe Capsule" work with Airport Extreme?

I'm confused by the descriptions of this device. First of all there seem to be two different devices with more or less the same description one is just "Safe Capsule Made for Apple Time Capsule" which seems to indicate that it has the capacity for 2TB of memory, and "Safe Capsule with 2TB Made for Apple Time Capsule". It isn't clear why the second one is $369 while the first is only $79, but I assume that the first is probably "sans drive"? Since they don't say that specifically, it sounds a bit like a scam.
Second, is this devise usable if connected to Airport Extreme, or only if I already have a Time Capsule from Apple? Anyway, I order it and then immediately had second thoughts so called and canceled the order. But it's not clear to me what this device actually does, and the descriptions seem misleading. Here's a link to the description of the first device: http://tinyurl.com/34k5tf8
And here's the link to the second: http://tinyurl.com/3aeneh3
    Pretty confusing.

It should work fine with either one. You should be aware that Apple doesn't officially support use of a USB drive connected to an Apple Wi-Fi base station as a Time Machine drive, although many people have been reasonably successful with that.
