Time Capsule working without the internet being turned on ?

I set my TC up last week and it first I thought you could just plug it in, connect to it, and then wirelessly backup. I was wrong.
The only way I could get it to work was by connecting it wirelessly to my router/internet connection.
Now whenever the router is switched off the TC will not work until it is turned on.
Surely the TC can just be used for wireless backup without the need of the internet being turned on?
TIA

For you to be able to connect wirelessly to a Time Capsule independently of you Internet connection, your Mac would have to connect to two wireless networks at once. Mac OS X isn't really organized to make that feasible.
If all you want to do with the Time Capsule is to use it as a backup drive, it would have been cheaper to buy such a drive.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

Make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime (7.6.6) installed - if this is missing or out of date there may be no audio output from iTunes (including, but not limited to, playback through Bluetooth devices) or playback may be of poor quality.
Also check iTunes' Play Audio Using setting in Edit > Preferences > Playback (you will have to restart iTunes for any changes to take effect).  In most cases selecting Direct Sound addresses playback issues when Windows Audio Session is active (though some users have reported the reverse),
If neither of these solves your problem try installing this alternate version: iTunes 12.1.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards).  The "for older video cards" label is a little misleading, as this also fixes some playback issues, QuickTime and Outlook interoperability errors, and problems with other third-party applications.

  • Can I access the data backed up on my time capsule remotely via the Internet?

Can I access the data backed up on my time capsule remotely via the Internet? Let us say I have all my music or photos on my time capsule at home and I want to access it while I am outside over the Internet can I do this?

    See remote access methods here.

I am not sure what format these files are in.. but if they are itunes or iphoto.. have a care.. it is easy to corrupt them.

  • Does the Time Capsule work without LAN

Ok so I'm looking at buying a Time Capsule, not sure which generation but it has 1Tb of storage, becuase the macbook air only has like 60GB SSD, and i'm wondering whether it all just works over WiFi, and i don't mean does it back up over WiFi I mean does it need to be connected to a router with a LAN just to enable it's WiFi backup?
    Thanks for any answers!

You can backup using Wi-Fi only, but it is a good idea to use an Ethernet connection for your first backup....since everythng on your Mac will be copied over.
It will probaby go 4-5 times faster using an Ethernet connection.
Once the first backup is done, you can switch to wireless since Time Machine will only be backing up the changes to your Mac since the last backup. These "incremental" backups should only take a few moments on each backup.

  • Time capsule cannot find the internet

I have been using a prior Time Capsule (flat square 2 Tb).  Recently I've had intermittent problems connecting to Time Capsule.  After resetting it would would again  work briefly then the Time Capsule would be lost from the wireless connection to my MacBook Pro using Yosemite.  I suspected a hard drive issue and decided to upgrade.
I purchased the latest Time Capsule 3 Tb (ME2LL/A) to increase backup capacity and hopefully faster wireless transfer.
I disconnected the old and plugged in the new.  I was unable to connect to the internet.  I know the ethernet from the modem is working.  It can be directly connected to the computer and all is well.  All I get on the Time Capsule is a blinking yellow light.  I have done multiple resets without a connection.  Thinking I may have a defective unit, I returned it for exchange.  The same problem occurred as with the firs unit  It cannot connect to the internet.
    Any suggestions are welcome.

Yosemite is a cause of pain and suffering.
First things first can we simply bypass Yosemite.. at least do the setup with another computer .. non-yosemite. An iphone or ipad using airport utility for iOS is actually superior by far cf airport utility now in Mac OS. It seems to have far less hassles.
Start with a full factory reset of the TC.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Tell us then if you are forced to use Yosemite what is happening.
When you open the airport utility it should show an airport that needs configuration.
Make sure wireless is on and make sure the new device shows under the wifi icon in the top menu area.
Make sure you set ipv6 to link-local only for whatever connection you use.
I do recommend if you run into trouble and have no luck plus no ipad/iphone available.
Do it manually. Fully manual instructions using ethernet.. here.
Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule

  • How to connect my time capsule & macbook to the internet?

I purchased a Time Capsule last weekend to back up all my photos etc.  I was able to set up the Time Capsule with Airport Utility and now have my home network set up, I can easily get everything I need on my Macbook Pro (mid 2009, Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 if that helps?) EXCEPT I can't get the time capsule to connect to the internet.  For some reason whenever I want to access my pictures or the time capsule, I have to connect to the wireless network but if I want to connect to the internet I have to reconnect to my old wireless network.  I have tried everything but just can't get it to work correctly! The Time Capsule light has only ever flashed orange at me...

time capsule should be in bridge mode and plugged into your main router so it is part of the existing network.
Bridge on you Lion version is easy as you can still download and install a real utility.

  • Access Time Capsules HDD over the internet!?

Hi, I've done a search and was wondering if there is any method of connecting to Time Capsule over the Internet. There are some ways, but the setup seems pretty complicated.
Has anyone found an easy method of doing this?
    Thanks for the Help!
    Mike

You have to enable WAN sharing. Then you can access the drive by going to the "go" menu and "connect to server" then typing in: "apf://your external ip". Then punch in your password and you should be connected. For your PC connection you need to go to my computer, right click on it, and select map network drive and type in: "\\your external ip\your disk name". Let me know if it works.

  • How do I connect my Time Capsule directly to the internet cable from the wall?

My Time Capsule only works if I connect it to my wireless router with a LAN cable. But, when I plug the cable from the wall directly into the Time Capsule, it just blinks orange. What am I not doing right?

There is no modem in the TC.. you need a modem.. your wireless router is actually a modem router.. not just a modem.. so it could be replaced with a straight modem.. sometimes.. it can be bridged .. sometimes..
But you still haven't told us enough.. what broadband do you have?
What model is the existing modem router? How does it authenticate to the ISP?
Once we know those things we can suggest further options.

  • Time Capsule & Connectivity to the Internet

I am using a new MacBook Air with the new time capsule. My chosen network disappears after a while and I must unlock and then choose/open the network dialog box to rechoose my desired network? My Iphone and IPad do not have the same issue.

halo buddy. Unfortunately I didn't find a solution. I tried, calling apple care, reaching this forum, google, but failed, and then I sent it to apple retail store to change a new one since it's still in warranty. Genius Bar people told me it's hard to tell what the disgnosis was because it would take time to carry on tests, according to my description of the periodical loss of internet connection.
I didn't meet your iphone pc sync thing. Yes very strange situation. I strongly recommend you to take it to the apple retail store. But should its warranty expired, would help if you make a call before you go.

  • Time Capsule connection over the internet

I bought the new Time Capsule 2T. I do travel a lot and want access to my files on the HDD of the Time Capsule. Despite some info on the internet I can not connect my Time Capsule over the internet. Any ideas how I can set my Time Capsule in such a way that I am able to connect over the internet.

  • Can the Time Capsule work if the hard drive is dead?

My Apple Time Capsule stop working yesterday.  I've tried resetting it using the various tips and I even called Apple support.  The light stays in the solid amber mode regardless of what I do.  When I try resetting it by holding in the reset button then powering on the capsule the light will blink (not quickly though) and when I release at after any amount of seconds it returns to amber.  I do hear a clicking sound (so the HD might be bad).  My question is should I be able to reset it and it show up in my Airport Utility even with a bad HD?

My question is should I be able to reset it and it show up in my Airport Utility even with a bad HD?
The device needs repairs. If the hard drive is defective it can be replaced. If you don't want to replace the hard drive, it is possible to wire the Time Capsule up as a wireless router only....but a repair shop will have to do this for you.
If you have tried the Factory Default Reset a few times, unfortunately that's really all you can do at this time.

  • Will the time capsule work the bt home hub 3

Will my time capsule work with the bt home hub 3

Apple products work in a huddle with themselves.. all others are excluded so no you cannot wireless repeat if that is what you mean.
In bridge though the TC can work as a WAP.. as can every wireless router ever made. You must connect to the home hub by ethernet. Then set the wireless manually and use the same network name, ie SSID, and security settings and password.. but you need to use a different wireless channel. You can then roam with any wireless devices..and they should connect to the strongest signal. In reality it doesn't work 100% and I think it is easier to use a different SSID and know what you are connecting too, but that is up to you.
