Time Capsule Works Airport, But not ethernet

Ok, i got a new 1TB TC in the mail earlier today, I started setting it up, And i noticed that it would not work with my mac pro over ethernet. So i was wondering if it had to me setup more. I fire up my macbook and airport utility just like on the mac pro. The macbook sets it up fine that is everything! The internet works on my mac pro, And it even sees a share with the same name as my time capsule,
It has a computer icon, like another computers share, Also i can't connect to it.
If i manaually enter the IP address under airport utility It does come up! But from there i can update the settings!
However i still can't access the share over ethernet, And i can't set time machine to backup

OK, when you said
...but i cant actually use my time capsule for time machine. since it doesnt show in the utility
what utility did you mean?

  • Time machine ethernet backup to time capsule works, wifi does not

    Hi all.
I recently updated my old time capsule to one of the new tall ones ME182X/A with a 3GB drive.  I transferred over the backup file of my Macbook Pro according to the Apple instructions (Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive) and whilst connected via an ethernet cable, time machine works fine with the new time capsule.
However, when I disconnect the ethernet cable and connect to the time capsule over wifi, time machine hangs on "preparing backup".  I do not get to "xxMB of xxMB" or any error messages.  I've tried the following:
reconnecting via ethernet after restarting my Macbook Pro (running 10.9.5) allows time machine to start and complete the backup.
I've tried deleting the ".inprogress" file, as per some websites, but this doesn't solve the problem
    turning off spotlight, doesn't help
I have no anti-virus software running
restarting the computer, resetting SMC, restarting the time capsule - no help.
The wifi side of the TC is working perfectly otherwise.  I can "see" it with Airport Utility, and mount the drive and explore it without any problems.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks again,
    John

Here are the steps I would use.. do not connect by ethernet at all whilst you do them.
    Factory reset the TC.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup with different names. Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 as base station name. TCwifi for wireless name.
Make sure the password for disk and wireless etc.. are 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
Reset TM then to the new drive location.
See A4 pondini for a full reset.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Strongly recommend you also verify the backup and install the Widget.. A5 and A1. The log you get from the widget is a big help to see what is going wrong.
Ensure the ipv6 is set to link-local only in wireless.
I would do the whole lot but you can test at each step if you want.. I just had it happen to me.. first time in 12months and regular posting in this area. Doing the above got me going again.. although it takes a bit of patience to work through the lot.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express not working correctly.

Just bought a Time Capsule to replace my router....and now my Airport Express is no longer showing up in Airport Utility.
Also, the speed is awful.  I have 25MB coming into the house via ethernet....but a speedtest on my wireless network shows me running at 4.5Mb download speed.
I spent $500 on the Time Capsule.  I don't understand it.
    Anyone have suggestions?
    Tony

I would suggest, reconnecting the Express to the TC again. Use the AirPort Utility to make ALL configuration changes including the network extending settings. Then restart both base stations and check that the settings are still good. Then disconnect the Express and give it a few minutes to initialize. It should connect. If not, then the issue may be either the distance or obstructions (like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) that is preventing the Express from getting a signal from the TC that is adequate enough to extend.

  • WPA security with both time capsule and airport express not working together

I want to set WPA security on my time capsule so that my teenager can not access wireless with out permission but when I add a security key my airport express disappears from list.
I have tried setting a password then the time capsule restarts and when it does the aiport express is gone from list and can not be found when rescanned.
Do I need to set time capsule and then reset airport express by pluggin it directly into desktop and resetting its software?
    Thanks

  • Time Capsule switches on, but not visible in AirPort Utility

    I have just moved house.
New ADSL modem/router, no problem setting up network. Trying to 'extend' network with Time Capsule (and wireless backing up) as I had in the previous house without a problem. When I use AirPort Utility to scan for wireless devices (eg AirPorts), with the TC switched on, it doesnt appear in AirPort Utility.
The light is flashing amber, but it alweays did that.

If you can temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, you should be able to see it in AirPort Utility.
In fact I want to access my TC configuration in order to get back the password needed for my wife to connect to it.
Until you can resolve the AirPort Utility issue, you may be able to recover that password with the Keychain Access utility.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Utility Not working?

I just got Time Capsule, I tried to hook it up at my office by attaching it to the internet. I went through the steps to have it show up as one of my wireless devices. Even got the green light. However I must have set it up wrong because now airport utility cannot find the apple network and continually asks to RESCAN - the utility has dimmed out all my other options so all it does is rescan but can't find network etc etc. I would just like to reset everything and start from scratch but it won't let me. I"ve deleted my Airport Utility application and reinstalled but it still won't work. Any suggestions anyone.
    Rick

    Hi Rick,
Press the recessed reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 5 seconds or so. This will reset all settings and let you find it in AirPort Utility. Also, you need to provide a bit more information about your current/intended network setup in order for us to provide any useful advice (ie, how will you connect to the Internet, what purpose your TC will serve such as Router, wireless device, etc.) And just FYI, deleting and reinstalling AirPort Utility is kind of futile as the reason it wasn't detecting your Time Capsule was because of the settings on the Time Capsule itself, but with the reset it should be able to detect it again.
Also, here is a useful Apple document that will give you more information about setting up networks:

  • How to hook up an Aiport Time Capsule to Airport Express (not wireless)

I DO NOT want to extend a network, but run the 2 Airports (1Airpot Extreme & 1 Time Capsule) side by side. My router only has 1 Wan output, and so do the Airports. How can I split the output from the router, so I can connect both Airports?
    Thanks!

You don't need to split the output from the router. Run one cable from the broadband modem to the AEBS's WAN port. Plug a cable into one of the AEBS's Ethernet ports and the other end into the TimeCapsule. (Which one gets plugged into the broadband modem doesn't matter but for explanation purposes I'll assume the AEBS is first.) The AEBS will receive its IP address from the modem.
The TC will receive its IP from the AEBS. Any device that logs into the AEBS will receive an IP from the AEBS and any device that logs into the TC will receive an IP from it. And you'll need to configure them to avoid giving out the same addresses. Log into one of the base stations using the Airport Utility and select the Network Tab and click on the Network Options button. The dialog will let you set the IP range the device will share with its devices. Switch one from the default to a different choice.

  • Canon printer into Time Capsule - works with macbook not imac - why?

    Hi all,
This has been up in the iMac section for a couple of days and no one has replied. I thought I'd post it in here as people with TC's may have come across this and know how to fix it. I originally thought it was an iMac fault - perhaps it still is! Anyway I hope I've not broken any rules by posting it in here, when its already else where, if so apologies in advance.
I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro (3 weeks old). I also have a time capsule and have plugged my Canon iP4500 into the USB port on the TC. I had, before getting the macbook, the printer printing wirelessly, with all the functionality that it should have using the airport on my iMac and the TC. Then after an upgrade of OS X, it suddenly stopped working wirelessly. I can not get it to work, no matter what I try - I've reset the printer settings in system prefs, reinstalled the drivers from the Canon web site, re-setting the TC - nothing works.
However it does work from my MacBook Pro! It has the same OS X version, the same printer drivers downloaded from the same site.
Obviously I'd like both computers to be able to print wirelessly - not sure what's going on with the iMac.
All help is very very appreciated.

I thought I'd search the hard disk and remove all files, drivers et al that I could find relating to the printer. Then reinstalled the up to date driver from the Canon website. (If I knew how / if it possible to post a screen grab of the printer window I would - so I've made a new page on my website - you can see screen grabs at: http://web.me.com/timhydes/Site/CanoniP4500_printerissues.html ).
This time the printer window pops us as per usual, then in the top half section where it shows the icon, the name of the file it should be printing, but underneath it says "No pages found!", in the status table in the bottom half it says "Printing" (see screen grab 1). If I leave it for a while, it changes the top half to "Printer Ready" and the status menu says "Stopped" (see screen grab 3).
If I click on hold, then resume I get a new window which says: "Operation Count not be completed" "client-error-not-possible" (see screen grab 2).
I've checked that there is printer ink, paper et al, and it still prints from my MacBook.
I wondered it this may shed some light on the issue from those more knowledgeable than my self.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

  • Connecting External Hard Drive to Time Capsule - In Finder but not Disk Utility

    Hi,
So I've got a bit of a problem.  I have connected my LaCie 2d Quadra External Hard Drive into my Time Capsule via USB for the simple purpose of making it wireless, as well as allowing both my husband and I to access the files on it.  It works flawlessly on my husband's MacBook Pro:  Shows up as an icon on the desktop as well as in Finder and Disk Utility.  However, on mine I can access it via the Time Capsule in Finder (as a shared file), but it does not show up in Disk Utility nor on the Desktop.  I tried installing the LaCie Desktop Manager, but, although it downloaded and installed fine, when I went to open it I received the error:  "No LaCie Desktop Manager Compliant Device Found".  I am assuming that is because it really is only even recognizing it at all in the Finder because it is a shared file, but not actually recognized as a Drive.  And that explains why it is not on the Desktop or Disk Utility.  Annoyingly, I can't drag the shared file onto my desktop either.  Well I can, as an alias, but it says original not found when I try to access it.
Obviously, I would like to access the LaCie drive on my desktop wirelessly as my husband does, the way it does when I plug it in directly.  If I connect it via USB directly into my MacBook, it works fine.  So really it is just a matter of getting it up and running wirelessly, which I know it can do because it is doing it on my husband's.   I am wondering if it is a Lion issue, as I am running Lion and my husband is running Snow Leopard?  But then again...it does work with my Lion if I plug it in directly...sigh...
    Here are our details:
    Me:  2008 MacBook, running Lion
Hubby:  2008 MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm bewildered!

On your Lion MacBook, click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
Click Finder, then click Finder Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "Display these items on the desktop" make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Connected Servers"
    Close Finder Preferences
Open Macintosh HD or the Finder
Look to see if the Time Capsule icon is displayed under the SHARED heading in the Finder
Click on the Time Capsule icon and folders representing the Time Capsule disk and your Lacie disk should appear to the right
Double click on the Lacie folder to mount the drive on the desktop
You may need to click Connect As at the upper right of the center window if your disk requires a password. Once the password is saved, you should not have to enter the password in the future.

  • Time capsule works fine but no backup

My Time capsule is fully visible in the finder and also through my ios devices it is perfectly visible with everything in the green and is accessible. However it does not make a backup anymore as time machine cannot find the drive. Disconnected and connected the drive again, same problem. Also swithced to the non 5 ghz network, no difference. Last backup is on January 1 and after that it stopped on all macbooks (pro).

Is it the Gen4 you noted in the profile?
If no light at all comes on, even when booting it is broken somehow.
Certainly if it is the new tall one, afew people have this issue.. the plug has fallen out or not been connected properly during manufacture.. how it passed QA is anybody's guess but a fair number do. Get it replaced.. apple sell it for a premium.. make sure they deliver it in perfect condition.
There is no option in the airport utility to turn it off.. the old utility you can change it from solid green to blinking with data.

  • Can't find Time Capsule with Airport Utility on ethernet but can on configure other.

OS X 10.8.4, 24" iMac,TC 1st generation, Airport Utility 6.3 or 5.6, TC Firmware was 7.6.3 downgraded to 7.6.1(no effect), reinstalled OS X 10.8.4, have done a factory reset of TC, TC is visible to finder and Time Machine, both work fine. Internet works fine. Wireless works fine.
Airport Utility on  Macbook Pro with the same software sees it fine, no problems.
    Please! Any suggestions?

  • Slow to load webpages over Airport, but not Ethernet

I just bought a Macbook (basic configuration) and am frustrated when using the internet. Every time I try to load a webpage, it takes a long time to load, but once the images start appearing, the rest is very fast. This only happens when using Airport wireless. I hooked up the Macbook via ethernet cable to my wireless router, and everything is blazing fast. I'm running an iMac G5 (PowerPC) via wireless airport in the same room, and no problems there - everything on the iMac is very fast. What is the issue with airport on my Macbook?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

one thing to check is to make sure it's your network that your macbook is connecting to. mine sometimes is a little buggy and will connect to the neighbor's signal instead, which of course is very weak, and will take forever to load a webpage.
another thing to try is to reset your wireless router. first, turn your airport off on your macbook. then unplug your wireless router for a minute. then plug it back in. wait a few seconds, then enable the airport on your macbook.
also, try different browsers. download the deerpark build of firefox. deerpark has an intel-mac specific build of firefox that works better than regular firefox. i've found it to be the fastest browser for the mac.

just installed a new time capsule and i want to use my airport express to extend my wireless range....time capsule working with existing devices at this time...but i am not able to get airport utility to recognize the airport express.....????

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..
