Time Capsule works as a router, not as a back-up drive?

Hey all,
I have a new (bought it the end of August) MBP and Time Capsule. I didn't set the TC up until about a month ago (I had another back-up drive, my roommates had a wireless set-up when I moved in), but the old router we had was terrible so now we're using my TC as a router. It works fine, internet connectivity is good.
My problem is that I can no longer connect to do back-ups. My back-ups were working fine, but I just got a notice from Time Machine that it's been ten days since a back-up was performed. I can't connect to the TC in Airport Utility at all. I tried an ethernet connection and I tried my older MBP and, in both cases, I got an endlessly long span of "Reading Time Capsule Configuration" and then an error message telling me to make sure I'm in range or connected via ethernet (like I said, did that and it's definitely "connected via ethernet.")
I'm wondering if anyone can explain this / help me troubleshoot. I don't want to unplug / reset the TC until I'm sure what might happen and what I'm going to do - my roommates and I depend on the wireless, obviously, so I want to at least check with them to see if we have a back-up router before I play around.

Exactly how is the TC connected to the rest of the network.. particularly the modem.. is the TC functioning really as the router or just Wireless Access point?? Did you set it up? What IP is the TC and can you ping it?
If the ping fails, then tell us
What IP is the computer and did you change the IP of the TC?
If the TC cannot be seen by airport utility.. try just rebooting the TC.. does it then become available??
If so your TC is suffering a common condition that may be made worse if you updated the firmware to 7.6.

  • Time capsule works as wireless router, but intermittently stops backing up because it is not recognized

So here is the scenario.  I just purchased a new 2T Time Capsule about a month ago.  At some point, about a week ago it stopped working correctly.  A few things that I've noticed:
    1.  The wireless router works just fine.
    2.  Every once in a while (more often than not) my computer (Mac book pro) will not recognize the time capsule and it will therefore not do it's wireless backup.  I can no longer use it to store data.
    3.  What works?  Unplugging the time capsule for about 20 seconds and then reconnecting seems to fix the problem, but will then the same problem will recur spontaneously.
    4.  Sometimes, I'll restart my computer and that will fix the problem, but again time capsule will drop off from the shared devices.
    5.  Interestingly, when TC is not recognized by my mac book, the Home Sharing feature of Apple TV also is rendered non-functional.
Any ideas?  is it a hardware issue?  If so, is it my Mac book or my TC or both?
Thanks for your advice in advance

I have seen a few posts on this one and the issue is very likely to be the way Auto channel changes take place.. for some unknown reason, the wireless can still connect as a router but the arp address is lost in the ARP table on the computer. So open a terminal and type arp -a soon after a TC restart when TM can see it.. you will see the TC MAC address listed. Once the TC is no longer recognised again do arp -a and you will find the TC is no longer listed. It is possible to force a static listing to the ARP table, but it seems to be much easier and better to simply lock the wireless channel.
Using the airport utility go to the TC setup and open the wireless area. Airport on the top menu.. wireless on the tab under that. where it says radio channel selection change to manual.. give it a fixed channel, for 2.4ghz it is best to pick the least used channel and you will need to use some site survey software to do this.. kismet, inssider for pc is superior to most Mac utilities at the moment. There are only 3 non overlapping channels 1, 6, 11 (12,13 outside USA). Pick one. I would also give a separate name to 5ghz wireless so it doesn't switch between the two.. that means you will have to change manually if signal drops out as it does more readily on 5ghz. The locking of channels seems to help the Mac not lose the MAC address in arp..though the actual mechanism is unknown to me.

  • Back To My Mac to a Time Capsule through a 3Com Router not working

I have a Mac Book Pro (10.5.7), Time Capsule (7.4.1), 3Com Office Connect Wireless Router (3CRWDR101A-75), a trial subscription to Mobile Me and a 2.5G iPhone (2.2.1).
I have been unable to get BTTM from my Mac on a remote wireless connection to my Time Capsule working - hence this post.
The set up of the Time Capsule was quite straightforward (as I would have expected from Apple) and I quickly established local and remote iCal / Address Book sync between my Mac, www.me.com and my iPhone. I have enabled and am the 2.4 and 5GHz bands on the Time Capsule and the wireless air interface on the 3Com router has been turned off. All of internet and email services on my Mac work well locally and Time Machine work. So far so good.
However, I am unable to 'see' my Time Capsule in Finder from any WiFi network that is not my home network. When at home I have full access to Time Capsule's disk.
My 3Com Office Router 3CRWDR101A-75 is not on the list of supported routers (nor is any other 3Com Router) but it does provide UPnP and NAT as required according to Mobile Sync notes including http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1552 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1552. Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to find out from Apple's MobileMe support if there are any minimum requirements for any router to work with Back To My Mac so can't check to see if my 3Com router will ever work with BTTM or not.
Does anyone have any similar experience with setting up a 3Com Office Connect router to work with Back to My Mac?
Do I need to check / Can I check if my Time Capsule has been registered with the Mobile Me servers?
Do I need to enable any specific ports on my 3Com Office Connect router?
    Basic settings:
Time Capsule: green light - all OK
AirPort Utility>Internet: Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
AirPort Utility>Advanced>Mobile me: account set up
AirPort Utility>Advanced>IPv6: IPv6 mode = Node, at the request of Apple Mobile Me support
System Preferences>Mobile Me>BackToMy Mac: On (green light).
3Com Office Connect Router: DCHP server: On
3Com Office Connect Router: Firewall level: High (default)
3Com Office Connect Router: Disable NAT: Off (default)
3Com Office Connect Router: Enable Universal Plug & Play: On
3Com Office Connect Router: Enable IPSEC-NAT pass through: ON, at the request of Apple Mobile me support
Com Office Connect Router: DMZ: enable 1-to-1 NAT: Off (default)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Quick update on troubleshooting BTTM (or rather Back To My Time Capsule)...
Surprising;y, no 3Com products listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1304. 3Com tech support stated that no OfficeConnect products have been qualified against BTTM and my specific router does not support IPv6 over IPv4 encapsulation.
MobileMe support were not able to help, citing the fact that I had an unsupported router.
I have made no change to my modem/router config since first posted but since an upgrade of my TC to 7.4.2 I have been able to use BTTM with my TC (bridge mode) and my OfficeConnect modem/router (802.11b WiFi disabled).
I have made limited testing from other remote locations from my MBP and also proved that it worked over a 3G/UMTS connection on the UK's 02 network also
MobileMe still reporting uPnP / NAT problem on my MBP when working remotely though.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9733258 confirms that this has been solved and, apart from the anomalous Mobileme status message, I can agree.
Good news so now do not need to swap out my 3Com router. Also shows that this 3Com product does meet BTTM connectivity requirements.

    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

  • My time capsule worked for several weeks and is now telling me backup disk not available? What to do?

My time capsule worked for several weeks and now is not backing up. Tells me backup disk not available? Any suggestions?

    This is a lion bug..
Generally just rebooting the TC will get it back. Otherwise you need to reset the TC and redo its setup.
Tell us a bit more.. but there is as yet no work around or fix for lion.
Certain things help.. but wireless is also a weak link. It will generally work better by ethernet.
Try and get back if it is still bugging you.. I can suggest some other things.. but I do not know of or read a bullet yet.
(Snow and TC firmware 7.5.2 which I run do not have this issue.. so the bug was introduced with Lion and 7.6 firmware)

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

  • My MacBook Pro is currently online via wifi, but the airport utility doesn't recognize the airport time capsule base station and has not backed up in 10 days

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch is currently online, with good (albeit slow... although that is due to the service provider) internet connectivity via wifi.  The icon shows that I am connected to my network with full bars.  I use an Airport Time Capsule as my wireless router, purchased late last year, and it has worked well until now.  Internet comes via cable modem (provided by the cable company), and can be patchy and quirky, so I am often rebooting the modem, but the airport wifi router typically does not need to be rebooted with the modem to regain connectivity.
My problem is that my time capsule has not backed up in more than 10 days.  When I went to investigate this, it claims it cannot find the time capsule.  when I open the airport utility on the laptop it claims there is no airport connected (although there is the green light next to the internet icon).  I checked on this using the airport utility app on my iPad, and it has no problem identifying the router as an airport time capsule.  I did update the firmware on the router using the app on the iPad, but it made no difference to the laptop.
First question: Do you think this is a problem with the Airport router or my MacBook?
Second Question: what can I do about it?
My MacBook feels like it is on its last legs anyway, so I am currently looking at replacements, but I really want to make sure it is backed up in case it dies before the new one arrives!!  On the other hand, we have serious power issues here, and while the router is on a UPS, the UPS battery is basically fried and conks out in about 5 minutes, so the Airport is constantly being cycled on and off, which I worry could also be causing problems with the proper operation of the device (although the fact that it works with the iPad makes me think that is not the case... but I don't really know).
    Thanks!

  • How does the time capsule work?

I am unfamiliar with this device. Can anyone explain how this works? I have a Gateway NV79, an IPad 2 and an IPhone. Will the time capsule work with these devices and a printer(Officejet Pro 8600)? If so, how does it do this? I am also wondering how it works as a router? Does it provide the internet access itself or do you have to have a separate source of internet to link to the device?

A Time Capsule is a wireless router and a hard drive in one package. It does not have a modem built in, so a modem and broadband service is required if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
As a wireless router, the Time Capsule can provide connections for up to 50 users and 3 wired Ethernet devices. If you need more Ethernet connections, a switch can be easily added to the Time Capsule for that purpose.
Your printer could connect to the Time Capsule using either a wired Ethernet connection or wireless connection
Apple's literature does a good job of describing the product. Be sure to click the links in the upper right hand corner of the main page to learn more about the Backup capabilities, Wireless performance, and detailed Specifications.

  • Time Capsule and FiOS wireless router

Can I connect the Time Capsule to my FiOS router and then disable the wifi feature on the FiOS router?

Are there any known issues with the TC in general, particularly from the wifi perspective?
TC is much better than it was.. make sure you keep it cool.. place it up from the bench on a couple of pencils.. that stuff about conductive rubber.. ignore it.. rubber in all its forms is an insulator and holds in heat. If it does start running really hot.. it has a fault and you should take it back.. Same with hard disk.. they occasionally go bad.. so backup to it.. fine.. storing files on it.. no don't do it.
Remember it is covered under your computer applecare.. so if you have any computer with extended applecare it will cover TC with certain conditions.. but that gives the TC effectively 3years warranty.. after that.. dispose of it and buy a new one.. the TC is not going to be reliable as the hard disk has been starting and stopping multiple times every day for 3years.. just don't trust them.
Wireless is ok.. I don't think it is particularly good range wise. Although Apple said how much better it was than previous Generations.. I have had all 4 now.. and performance in my experience was line ball between all of them. Apple design their routers to work very well with AEBS or AEx so if you want to extend wireless it is simple.. just it doesn't work with any other brand.. apple now reflecting a rather dark empire tendency.. they used to critize in others.
Clarification question...how do I backup my current files on the Lacie to the TC? Would that simply be connecting the two devices via USB and copying over?
Backing up TM files?? Not a good idea.. TM works differently on local disks and network disks.. and TC is best left to do its own stuff. If you mean moving actual file storage.. don't. The TC is not a file store.. it is a backup target.. TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive .. so you would have to buy 3rd party software anyway.
Also USB on the TC is purely for printer and USB connected disk.. but you cannot directly copy from one to the other.. it would have to copy over network to the computer and then back to the TC.. it will be 2x to 4x faster if you do want to copy files to use Lacie plugged into the computer.. and copy to the TC. At least files are only going one way.

  • Since installation of Mavericks, Time Capsule works very slowly, and the next backup of 236 GM will take nearly 30 days. What can I do to get backup more rapidly ?

Since the installation of Mavericks, Time capsule works very slowly and will need 30 days or more to produce a complete backup of about 200 GB. What can I do to get a complete backup more rapidly ?

What setup is the TC now.. ? what model and what firmware? Maverick seems to need 7.6.4 on the older TC.. and latest firmware on the AC version.
Is it in router or bridge mode? Do not use wireless only.. join a wireless network.
Is the computer connected by wireless or ethernet? I strongly recommend a test by ethernet.. with wireless in the computer turned off. If it is still very slow something is majorly wrong.. but I need the info I asked for to troubleshoot further.

  • Set up Time Capsule w/ belkin modem/router AND DSL splitter

    G'day,
I've got an existing network set up and would like to add the Time Capsule into the network. I'd like to use my current hardware if possible but am willing to purchase stuff if I need to.
There are some posts on my model of Belkin modem/router, but it didn't really help me.
    Here are my machines:
    1) PC - desktop (ethernet networking card, Windows 7,
    2) Laptop (wireless networking, Windows 7)
    3) Macbook Air (wireless networking)
    4) iPhone (wireless networking)
    Here are my hardware:
    A) Wall socket
    B) DSL splitter (3 x ports - port for line, port for phone, port for modem)
    C) Cordless phone
    D) Belkin modem/router (model number F5D7633-4A - 1 x ADSL port, 4 x Ethernet cable ports)
    E) Time Capsule
Here is my current set up:
Wall socket > phone cable > Splitter > phone cable to phone, phone cable to modem/router > ethernet cable from modem/router to PC
This solution gives me internet access via the ethernet cable to the PC and via the Belkin modem/router wirelessly to the Laptop. However, I haven't been able to connect my Macbook Air to this network yet - it doesn't seem to work.
So my question is, how can I include my Time Capsule into the network. Will I need another modem? I read about a bridge but I have no idea what that is or where to find that setting.
Also, can someone explain how to get my Macbook Air to connect to the network?
Can someone talk me through exactly what extra hardware I need and what I need to do to set it all up?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for chiming in. Could you talk me through how to do that? I'm a numpty and just haven't figured out which ports to plug which cords into, etc. If you or someone else could dumb it really right down that would be sweet.
Also, the Belkin is a modem/router, not a router. I am under the assumption that I need a modem to access the internet and that the Time Capsule is just a router.
    Is that right?
    Chris

  • Time capsule Crash /Mounting Point / share not found

I have a home network with Imac's, Appel Tv and use the Time Capsule (TC) as the router. Attached to the TC are several airport expresses. I use the TC as for time machine backups and attached is an axternal HD for media.
    All was working fine.
For some reason all in  sudden, halfway through working on the external data through one of the iMac's the system stops responding and it seems like the whole network is down. Checked it and seems like the TC does not give a wifi signal though the front led is green. All airport expresses were fine green and gave wifi, but (logically) no Internet.
Reboot the TC and all worked again, BUT....
I can see both the backup and external disc on the TC biut the computers cannot acces it. It give's a warning " it cannot find the original part from the HD"
I have no idea what to do now....
    Any support or idea's?
I must admit that this is the first time the HD error appears, it is not the first time the TC decides for no reason that it must stop working...

As this is a fairly complex setup.. let me encourage you to use 5.6 utility.
This has access to the log, completely lost on v6.. you also have more fine control of what is going on.. not that it can solve it.
Apple made 5.6 available to Lion but not ML but the fact is, it works fine.
Some of your computers may have it installed from previous OS.. but here is how to do it from scratch.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Install time capsule on a verizon router

How do I install a time capsule on a verizon router?

Do you have a Mac plugged by ethernet into the TC?
Let me suggest this is often much easier to do in isolation..
So pull the TC and plug it into a Mac.. Lan port of TC to the computer. No other connection on the TC.. turn off wireless so there is no other connection on the Mac.
Do a factory reset of the TC.. ie hold in reset before you power it on.. power on .. do not release reset for around 10sec until the front led flashes rapidly. Release reset.
Open the airport utility and setup the TC. put it in bridge. Set up the wireless with the names you want.
Update the TC and plug it back into the network.
    All should now work.

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.
