  • Time capsule with fiber optics

Hi, I recently moved from ADSL modem to fiber optics. Support guys tell me that i need to register my airport extreme inside the time capsule with the router I have but did not give me any instructions. any help most appreciated. I live in Japan so I am dealing with NTT

    Hi
Your question is not very clear. AFAIK, fiber optic is simply the transmission cable and has no bearing or effect on the networking method/devices. So simply run the RJ45 from your fiber optic router/modem to the port on the TC marked with dots in a circle. You should be good to go.
Unless I have misunderstood what you are trying to say.

  • Will Time Capsule support  a fibre optic internet signal via a modem?

Will Time Capsule support  a fibre optic internet signal via a modem?

Thanks, really appreciate the prompt response. Have you also been "forced" by the installation of Mountain Lion to use the TC as your principal network router? If so, does this reduce the performance of your network at all?

  • Is the new AirPort Time Capsule compatible with a fibre optic modem?

I will be having fibre optic set up in my new home.  The new AirPort Time Capsule states that it si able to connect to cable or DLS modem for internet access.  Will I be able to connect this device to a modem designed for fibre optic internet?
    Many thanks
    CS

Yes. All it needs is a modem (cable, fiber, satellite, DSL) with an Ethernet output (not USB).

  • Bt Home Hub (fibre optic) can it work with my Time Capsule & Airport Express?

I have just moved house after having no problems for years with my virgin cable I have now had to switch to Bt because cable is not available at my new address therefore I would like first and foremost to have my Time Capsule available to use as a hard drive, I am not too bothered about wi-fi as that comes from the bt hub, only thing is I am at a loss how the Time Capsule hard drive is not working. Also is there anyway the Bt Hub can connect/link to Time Capsule or even Airport Express.

Your TC can be used bridged to the BTHub.. and plugged in by Ethernet.
It is best to still use the TC wireless for the express to extend and you will find access easier.
Always best to start with a factory reset when you do this.. The TC remembers too much from its last configuration.

  • Setting up new MBP with SSD and optical drive and restoring from Time Capsule

    Hi Everyone-
Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I couldn't find a specific answer by searching.  My last macbook was stolen, but luckily I had everything backed up in my Time Capsule.  I just ordered my new Macbook Pro (13"), 16GB Ram, and a 240GB SSD.  I plan to install everything next week.  My plan is to keep all of my apps and working files on my SSD and use my 2nd hard drive for data storage and possibly my itunes library.  My question is- when setting all of this up, what would be the best way to go about doing this.
1.) Restoring my time machine backup to the original hard drive, move it to the optical drive bay, and then copy over the files that I want on the SSD (after installing the operating system) and delete them off of the origan HD.
2.) Restore my backup to the SSD (once it's installed) and then move files over to the formated original harddrive in the optical bay.  My problem is that there may not be enough room on the 240GB SSD.
3.) Is there a way to do a slective restore through TM and move where I want to keep them?  I think this would be the easiest.
    4.) Other way that I haven't mentioned
Thanks for any help with this question.

I used setup assistant last time when I changed from a 2009 mini to a 2010 mini. It caused some file permission errors that still persist today with iPhoto. I have 2 accounts on my mini, 1 for my wife and 1 for myself, but I store all our photos and videos on the shared folder in order to avoid duplication. But when she imports pictures from her profile and I try to view them full screen, I'm unable to. I have to relaunch iPhoto and repair file permissions if I want to view them properly. I was hoping to avoid this happening again.

  • Fibre Optic on Portland was in time for the Olympi...

Originally the exchange was showing as having fibre optic in time for the olympics, March 2012. But in the last few weeks the date now showing is December 2012.
Is this a permanent delay, or is the date likely to return to March 2012 seeing as Portland is hosting the sailing events of the olympics?
I'm concerned that if fibre optic isn't installed then the existing broadband will be strangled with the increase useage of the media set-up here during the olympics.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't know what that means?
All i know is when i put my telephone number in to the BT Infinity checker i get this message "Sorry, you're not currently able to get BT Infinity. This may be because your area has not been enabled yet, or your individual line does not support super-fast broadband. Register your interest and we'll let you know if this changes."
When i look on samknows it says FTTC should be in your area by 31/12/2012 - when previously it stated 31/03/2012.
Though looking at this news article http://www.btplc.com/ngb/News/London2012fibre.htm i'm expecting this means fibreoptic broadband for the village (less than 100 metres from my house) in time and during the olympics, then available to residents when the olympics are all over. Does this sound right?
Thanks for the replies thus far btw

  • Switched to fiber optic and now time capsule unable to do backup.  What do I need to do?

I recently switched to a fiber optic connection.  Time capsule is connected.  Green light is on.  However, it is unable to do a back up.  What do I need to do?

reset the TC to factory and start over with a clean new setup.. this is always required when you change over network items.
The computer no longer knows where to find the backup. A factory reset of the TC does nothing to the backups already on the hard disk.. it merely resets the router.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
When you redo the setup of the TC, I recommend you stick to short names with no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Then reset TM.. see A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Setup TM again aimed at the renamed TC.. it will say it is going to do a new backup but when it starts it will discover the existing backup and continue as before.
Post back with actual error messages if it fails.
You can load the widget see A1 in the same reference so you can check the TM log.

  • TalkTalk Fibre & Time Capsule

    Hi All
I fully appreciate this has been asked many times but after looks at all the threads I cannot work out what to do!
I have had TalkTalk Fibre installed and using the Huwai router that came with it. However, I would like a stronger signal as in WIFI I am getting a poor reception in many areas, so I can either:
    1. Use just the Time Capsule as my router
    2. Bridge my Time Capulse to mirror the TalkTalk and increase range (I believe?)
My main thing is which is best, and if its option 2, then how do I do it step by step as I have done a hard re-boot on the Time Capsule but just cannot get it to communicate with the TalkTalk router.
Also, will I still be able to use the hard drive on it at the same time
FInally, I have my TalkTalk router in the dining room, then have an ethernet cable from that to a ethernet box near my TV. This then has the Time Capsule plugged into it with 2 ethernets (1 to the LAN and 1 to the WAN).
Am I totally wrong in my set up or can someone give me a 'dummies' guide to set it up?
    Cheers!
    Michael

Hi LaPastenague, hopefully you can help
I have set up a TC with a talk talk huawei router as you state above.  However, I sometimes receive an error messgae on my IMAC stating that another device is using the IP address and that I should try and access the web again later or talk to the system adminstrator.
My set up is by using ethernet from the modem to the Huawei router and then ethernet to the TC WAN.  I am using a different wireless network name and password on the TC than is on the TalkTalk network.
I am having problems with my sonos music system losing access/connection to the TC server and so I am looking to resolve all the TC network issues before I can tackle the sonos issues and hopefullt one might resolve the other....

  • Fibre broadband and Apple Time Capsule

I wanrt to start using my Apple Time Capsule as my router, rather than the BT HomeHub.
I know what cables go where, it's when I get to the AirPort Utility stage that gets a little confusing for me.
I know you need to select PPPoE,
I put my username in Account Name,
    I leave password blank.
It is when I get to DNS Servers, I do not know what to put in there.
I am running OS X Mountain Lion with all the lastest updates installed.
    Can anyone help?

I tried [email protected] as my username but it would not work. It works with my username. It is all over the internet that you leave the password blank, otherwise if you put a password in, again it doesn't work.
You do NOT get an option on the Time Capsule to have DNS set to auto. You only have the option to put in your primary and secondary DNS.

  • How can I reconfigure an Airport Timecapsule and Airport Extreme Base Station to extend a new Time Capsule 3TB network.

Previously they were configured to be part of a network attached to a cable modem.  Now I have a DSL modem.  I can get the 3TB Time Capsule tower to be recognized by my AirPort Utility but cannot get the older 2TB Time Capsule and Extreme Base Station to be recognised as wifi extensions of the 3TB Wi-Fi Base Station.     This latter base station is set up in Bridge mode and the wifi is switched off on the DSL Modem.     I am trying to recreate a home network (I have created a newly named one) and use the Apple products as the wifi routers, leaving the fibre optic-supplied DSL modem to interface with the internet.
I would have thought that I should set-up the 3TB Time Capsule Base Station in DHCP network mode, but trying to do so gives me error messages and renders the network inoperative.   Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the AirPort utility to recognise the two other devices (Base Stations) as extensions of the main one?    I have tried with RJ45 cabel connections to no avail.

First, it would be wise to update your computer to OS X Mavericks. It's just a free update, but it really helps your computer.
Once you've done that, on to the fix.
In Airport Utility, select the old router and click "edit". Click the Wireless tab. Select Off. Click Update, and wait. During the update, you should use your phone to read this, as you may have no wireless for a time.
Once the update is done, click the new Time Capsule and click "edit". Select the wireless tab, and change the Network Mode to "Create a Wireless Network". Choose your name, security and password. Click Update. Once the new Time Capsule is plugged in and wired, you should be able to connect to your network from your laptop.
Back on the old Time Capsule, go to the Wireless Tab and select, "Extend a Wireless Network". Select your network, and click update.
On the Airport Extreme, do the same as the old Time Capsule.
You should be done! Now, you can move your old Time Capsule somewhere else as use it as an extention of your network. And the same with the Airport Extreme. Enjoy your 5TB of network storage!

  • I have a time capsule connected directly to fiber connection. I have connected a windows server directly to TC and configured it for remote desktop connection. From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home. What config I need on TC?

I have a time capsule directly connected to fibre optic point out. All pcs and macs are connected wirelessly to the internet. I have connected a windows server pc to TC. When configured for Remote desktop connection, I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet. I guess I need to change some settings in TC to get some ip adress for the remote desktop connection from my home. Anyone who can help me out? Appreciate it.
    Narmin

I am a little lost now.. I have read again your title and your first post.. and they seem inconsistent.
    In the title you state.
From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home.
Interanet is not a word I know.. I assumed intranet...are you talking about internet or intranet? And just to be clear say WAN or LAN.. !! Is your home part of the interanet??
In the first post you state,
I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet.
Now this is more normal.. the issue is not in the home at all, it is accessible from there but fails from internet. If this is correct, then you can do a few obvious things to determine where the problem is.
But first I need to know are you actually testing from a different internet connection to your home lan.. you are not just trying the public IP from inside the LAN as that will fail due to the TC not doing NAT Loopback.
I am also assuming the TC is the only router in the network, and has the public IP on the WAN interface.
And I am also assuming you have turned on the ping responder and you can actually ping your public ip from the internet and get a response. This helps no end in figuring out where there are issues. Strange but I have no idea if there is a ping responder in the TC WAN so you might need to forward that as well. Also if you have a dynamic public ip address are you using dyndns or no-ip or some other service to connect.
    1. Test bypassing the TC.. plug the internet connection straight into the windows server,, and test if you have access. If yes, the TC is the problem.. if not, your setup on the windows server is wrong.. look at firewall in particular.
    2. Assuming from test 1 the TC is the problem, Post the screen shots of the port forwarding setup for us to look at.. that is by far the easiest way to check it out.
There are lots of references to port forwarding in the TC.. eg
    http://must-know-mac.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-port-forward-time-capsule.html
The things that generally go wrong are firewall on the computer that is accepting the port.
The ISP doesn't allow connections on a particular port. (not likely in your case)
The router is behind another router.. double NAT will kill any port forward.
Upnp has already allocated a port.. not an issue as TC doesn't use upnp although a reboot of everything after you set port forwards is well worth it.. amazing how things don't stick properly without a reboot.
IP on the receiving device is not static and so changes.
Not enough or right type of ports are opened. This is always messier than it looks as one port is often not enough for two way communications.

  • Gmail faults after change to fibre optic modem

    Hello there,
Hope someone can help me out with this. Since modem change from ADSL to Fibre Optic i get constant error for my gmail account that says "Too many simultaneous connections. (Failure)". I understand that this is because i probably have too many devices logged into the google account, but the weird thing is i did not have this problem before.
My modem is a Alcatel-Lucent I-240W-A connected to the 2TB Time Capsule. I tried various mail clients, as OSX Mail became unusable. I now use Postbox which did its best in the beginning but after a month it started to drop again and again. Besides reporting "too many simultanious connections" it sometimes says my password is not correct and it cant login. My phone will do the same once in a while ("Wrong password for Gmail, cannot login") and give me options to change settings or retry. Both being on the same Wifi network (TC 5Ghz).
I have access to the actual modem, for if someone has a way to perk settings.
    Many thanks.

The always helpful Mr. Pastenague, thank you.
    Ok, here goes.
Gmail on any browser works perfect. No drops, no "yellow alert bars", ..nothing. All client connections are IMAP, indeed, and no special settings other than general port settings (465), SSL is on, password is active and where it says User Name the macbook settings have the actual username where phone keeps it blank ("optional"). Funny thing is, the iOS mail client has almost no issues. Maybe once a day it cant login to gmail where the osx has trouble over 50 times a day.
The ISP modem configuration does not have any IPv6 setting available. Copying what i do see:
1: The spy friendly TR69 protocol:
    2. Internet is through PPPoE:
    Internal:
    The issue:
    3. The TC is in bridge mode - but i did find:
    Network options:
TCP/IP per client (this being the macbook) is link-local:
    4. On ISP pop account, will check if they have that available. Did not came with the actual intro though.
Many thanks for your efforts, standing by for if you need any additional info.

  • Mac OS X- 10.6.8 -fibre optics / TC problem

Not computer savvy enough for this one.  Just switch from an ethernet connection for internet to wireless (fibre optics).  Now internet does not function when time capsule is plugged & working wirelessly as in the past.
Solution to date has been to disconnect Time Capsule to have Internet work.   How do we get both to work simutaneously?
Have direct wired Time Capsule to computer but internet still does not function.
    Advanced thanks for any help.

I am not at all sure how your internet works.. fibre is normally delivered over ethernet.
Anyway I am going to need some more explaination of how the TC is connected.
And what mode you have it running in. Do you get internet direct to the computer by wifi from some other router then?? And the TC is not connected at all?
You should still plug the TC into the fibre router by ethernet if that is possible. If not you can setup dual connection.. internet via wifi and TC via ethernet direct to the computer but that means only that one computer has access to it.
See the information in this thread.. I gave a whole series of screenshots on how to do the setup.

  • Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme

    Hi all
I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network  - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.
Is the airport extreme in bridge mode?
As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm
