Time code on ex. monitor

(For anyone who saw this on the topic: I'm putting this here because I'm afraid no one will look at it on the other one.)
MacBook w/ Tiger (all updates)
I'm using a slandered T.V. for my external monitor, but my question is: How, or is it even possible, to get the time code on the external monitor?
Thanks
Vernon

The only way is to drop the TIMECODE READER plugin onto your clips, if you want to see their timecode, or nest your sequence, or export it as a ref movie, then reimport that and put it on a timeline, THEN add the timecode reader plugin. Then you will see it on your footage.

  • Time Code Effect  Source Monitor and rendered .AVI movie display different timings???

Im seeing a strange error and hope someone might be able to help me out. I am shooting elementary classroom reading lessons for a study by the University of Michigans School of Education. It is important to the study to see what takes place over about a 2hour period of time.
Im shooting with 2 cameras. 1 on the teacher the other on the students. Im shooting on mini DV. The first camera I start about 4min ahead of the second so that when the 1hour tape is filled I can switch the tape in camera 1 while still capturing activity on camera 2.
When I edit the footage I am cutting back and forth between the 2 cameras. One initial shot is of the classroom clock as it ticks from one minute to the next. I later use this footage as a guide when establishing the Time of Day.
When the entire lesson is edited together and cut. I add two transparent video tracks each with the Timecode effect added. The first I synchronize with the classroom clocksetting the Timecode Source to Generate matching the Starting Timecode with the clock footage. I then crop the frames portion so viewers will know the time of day the footage was shot. The other I leave the Timecode Source set as Clip. I use the size and position controls to move the two timers into the upper left of the screen.
When I view the finished video in the Program Monitor everything looks great. When I Export|Movie to an .AVI file the video looks correct but the timers are off. The last frame of the video in the Source Monitor displays 11:28:19 for the clock timer and 02;02;00;23 for the total time timer. But when I view the .AVI the last frame displays 11;03;40 for the clock and 01;37;36;25 for the total time.
So how did I lose 24min between the Source Monitor displays and the rendered .AVI displays?

Yes. After I had the .AVI I ran through the two side-by-side (.avi and the Source Monitor). I have since experimented with some of the Time Code effect settings trying to see if these might have some impact. I have not been able to find any detailed explanation of what each setting controls/does other than an overview (see link below).
I suspect that this has something to do with the size/length of the clip 2+ hours. Is there an optimal length for an individual clip? Should I be splitting this into 2 or 3 shorter sequences and then putting them on a DVD with Encore and setting it up to play them back-to-back?

  • Time Code displayed on an External Monitor? Is this possible?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but is there a way to view your FC time code on your footage through your external monitor? I selected the show time code overlays from the viewer but it only shows up on the monitor on the computer screen and then goes a way when you play a clip. Is there something I’m missing that will allow me to watch the time code on playback, and on an external monitor? Thanks.

This will allow you to have TC display on one of your computer monitors. You cannot have it display on an external monitor...not on any NLE I know of. Not unless you are outputting to a deck and you have TC on the deck (the SUPER out on the back) routed to the monitor.

  • Time Code Confusion

I'm running into a timecode problem and not sure what's going on.
Here's what's happening. I'm trying to capture the beginning of a tape. I have set my time code in and out points to 05:34:47:08 to 05:37:07:07. I'm using a DSR-11 deck which is set to display the timecode (of the tape) on my monitor. The Log and Capture window in FCP shows the same timecode that's coming from the deck. Both the monitor and log and capture will display the same time code for the out point. When I'm capturing the clip it's like FCP has a mind of it's own. It continues capturing well past the out point. When it does stop and I double click it into the viewer the output time code says 05:37:07:07, but the audio and video are different. Both the monitor and log and capture timecodes show 05:37:08:19 as the outpoint. I've captured other parts of the tape but now I'm not sure if the timecodes are correct because the "additional" footage overlapse footage that I've already captured which have different timecodes.
How do I know which timecode is correct the one that's being displayed on the monitor and in log and capture or the timecode of the captured clip? Is it possible to have two different timecodes on the same tape? The tape stock is new.
I hope this makes sense. Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks.

My sequence setting is DV NTSC, 29.97 edit time base and a audio rate of 48kHz, 16 bit. The digitized clip has these setting. When I play the clip section from the DV Cam tape I get the audio as recorded at 48kHz.

  • Source Media Time Code in Export Frame Metadata

It is possible to include source media time code in the XMP metadata for images created using the Export Frame command? When I export a frame, the metadata only contains sequence time code. I work for an aerial survey and remote sensing firm, and we use time of day time code from aerial video footage in many places in our workflow. We include still frames of key points in the video in our deliverables for clients, and the time code values we need come from the same points as those still frames, so our current workflow uses RedCine-X to export still frames and Digital PIE to extract source time code from those images. I would strongly prefer to work only in Premiere Pro and never open RedCine-X, but I can't keep the workflow all in Premiere Pro if I can't get source time code out with the images.

That's a good suggestion Jim. I did try that before I posted, and exporting from the source monitor does embed time code in the XMP, but it's not time code I recognize. It's neither the media source time code nor the sequence time code where that frame appears in the only sequence I have in my test project. For example, I just exported a frame from the source monitor at 18:43:45:15 in the source media time code. That frame appears at 00:43:23:22 in the sequence I have open, and I used match frame to open the frame in the source monitor. The resulting time code in the XMP for the exported frame is 00:44:53:06. There are no options for anything except file name, format, and output directory in the Export Frame dialog, so I don't know how to control what time code Premiere sends out from the source monitor.

  • WAITING FOR TIME CODE....again

Hi, when I try to capture from DV device, the capture window appears "PREVIEW DISABLED" I can remote the dv device, mark time code in or out, play tape, pause tape, the time code in the capture window run and is the same taht the tape, but when I do batch capture, cpture clip or capture now, the preview window of catpure says : "WAITING FOR TIME CODE" "DEVICE MUST IN VTR MODE WHEN DEVICE CONTROL IS ENABLED" and when I abort the capture this message apperas: "THIS OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED AS THERE IS NO VIDEO", Quicktime pro is unabled to capture too, but IMOVIE capture without this problem. I download the firewire sdk from developer connection of apple and use AVCVideo Cap, and no problem for cature, so , my Firewire or dv devices are ok, with DVHSCap I capture PRO HD JVC very well.
Resume , I think there is a problem with quicktime and DV format, My Ibook G4 with FCP 5.0.1 capture from DV devices OK, without problem. If anybody resolved this please comment with us. I work to day with FCP 6.0.4 and quicktime 7.5 and Mac os 10.4.11 and 10.5.4 the problem is afected my PowerPC G5 and my powerbook intel. Another point of interest is that this problem is RANDOM, some times I can capture from DV devices in the first time, some times I can't capture.

    Hey AL
    How ya doin buddy?
"Either way, try an Easy Setup>DV Converter, to match your video standard (Pal or NTSC)."
    Yep - did that
Yes actually my older Sony TVR-310 camcorder IS a digital unit which can also play back analog tapes.
As I'm getting my way around now in FCE, I'm coming to some conclusions in regard to FCE's capture capability.
First let me say that I've also tried capturing some footage in FCE with my other Sony TVR-950, and have had dropped frames, and also breaks in time code.
I thought dropped frames were strictly a PC issue?
Anyway, it appears to me that FCE is VERY sensitive to time code issues NO matter which camera is in the chain.
In fact, I've also read here where folks have a lot of trouble with their Canon GL2's as well. Some of you have even suggested to do your captures in a cheaper Mini DV, or a clam-shell playback machine. This conserves the heads on your GL2 as well.
But why would FCE do better in regard to capturing and time code, with a cheaper Mini DV Camcorder? Perhaps I'm missing something here?
Perhaps iMovie doesn't care about the same issue?
    Now my main question is:
Ok I'll use iMovie6 HD (tried and true), to capture ALL my footage and just save the DV files to be edited later (imported) into FCE.
Does this sound like a viable solution to FCE's time code issues?
Will my iMovie captures be JUST AS GOOD as if they were done in FCE?
    Thanx so much guys!

  • How to open only one clip at a time in the source monitor?

Ok the answer to this question may be simple.. hopefully...
At the moment each time I open a clip in the source monitor it adds it to the dropdown list.
Fine... but I am opening and closing hundreds of clips in a day and after a while I noticed it seemed to be slowing down the whole PPCS5.5 system.
It appears that PP seems to be keeping each clip I open... active.
Is there a way to allow only one clip to be open at a time in the source monitor... other than having to close them all first??? (would be ideal if there was some kind of shortcut like shift-doubleclick)

SonyZ7's can record to compact flash cards as well as tape, so I generally log and transfer from the cards.
So I guess I should do a bit more research on workflow's in Pr

  • How do I get time stamped Wav files created in L7 to lock to time code?

    Hello everyone,
I did a search about time stamping audio files and was VERY happy to discover the "broadcast wave" format timestamps audio files! So I'm running tests, but cant seem to get logic to actually place the audio file according to the time stamp!
Method: I'm currently scoring a film, and have each cue as separate logic files. To sync Logic's timecode and the TC window burn, I set in the "sync" song settings that bar 1 play at the start of the cue (no offset). For example, If I want to start writing a cue at 1:06:27:05, I just tell logic that bar 1 starts at 1:06:27:05 and start writing. Both logics TC & The window burn TC match perfectly. When I bounce, I choose my bars and bounce as a "wave," which creates a file with time code stamped. I verify this by looking at the file in the audio window, which shows a clock icon, as well as the specific smpte time code if you select the file before importing into the audio bin.
From here, how do I get logic to automatically place the audio files according to their time code? I've tried "import audio" directly into the arrange page as well as dragging the file over from the audio bin and neither work. I've also tried then "cutting" these and "paste at original position" hoping it would read the time code, but instead just pastes it where it was originally imported, not according to the time code.
So I'm stumped! What am I doing wrong?
thanks in advance for your help!

Highlight the regions and then from the audio menu select "move regions to original record positions"

  • A frame with time code could not be found error

    Hey all
So I just started using Speedgrade with my Premiere CS6 timeline exported as EDL, all RED (R3D) footage. When I input the EDL it only loads about 50% of the clips and pops up a red box like this:
So after a bit of Googling, the only solution I found was to ensure the time code base match, which I changed from 24fps to 23.976 which is exactly what is in my Premiere sequence. I then had to find the clips and drag them onto the gray box where it says "Reel not loaded". No big deal, took me all of 5 minutes.
I had also thought the above error was due to me having some high FPS clips in my timeline (120fps to be exact). However, even with no clips in the reels panel showing "Reel not loaded" when I stop at a couple of clips on the timeline I get this:
And as you can see in the reels panel the clip it is referring to has indeed timecode in that range.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I'm pretty sure it's related to the whole time base thing and it's dropping frames, but can't see how this can be true now that I've changed all instances of 24fps in the settings to 23.976 and that's what the Premiere sequence is showing, and also what is in the RED files.
And here's the metadata for the clip as shown in Red Cine X:
    Cheers.

Facing many of the same problems over the last four days. It's been a total nightmare. Working on Speedgrade CC with .R3D files and conformed the timeline to match the 23.976 footage, yet I'm still seeing clips get rejected, along with dropped frames which both carry over to output files and seem to cause the program to crash.
    Would love an explanation.

  • Importing non-time code Audio

    Hi All,
I have a project coming up where my audio is coming from old fashioned
    cassette tapes.
I'm thinking the way about doing this would be to run my audio from the player into my dv deck and capture the audio via fire wire through the usual log and capture method. The only thing is the log/capture seems to always be looking for time code. Is there a way I can capture this non-time code audio and create my audio files?

To do it the way you are trying, you must go to
AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS > DEVICE CONTROL PRESETS and choose
    NON CONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
The only problem with this method is that you would not to be able to recapture the material again with a timecode that relates to your project.
If that is an issue then you might consider transferring the cassettes to DV tape first, then capture from that. (no need to select non controllable) When the project is complete, you can safely delete the media files knowing that they exist on tape as a timecode source that you can recapture should the need arise.
    Good Luck

PS - I changed the code so that it does not deal with bitmaps or graphics at all - - - but still no improvement.
Maybe it is Framework Version issue ??
    Thanks all

  • Can't find time code from original footage (captured from mini-DV tape)

Hi. I'm Old to mac, new to FCE, good at iMovieHD ('06). Just got FCE (4.0.1).
Imported some footage (a few random practice clips) from a mini-DV tape I shot, but I can only see the time coding for each clip, not where that clip begins and ends in terms of the entire one hour mini-DV tape.
My log is for the entire mini-DV. So this is a problem.
I suppose I could re-import the entire 60 minute mini-DV tape from the start, but shouldn't the time code be embedded into each frame?
    Help much appreciated.

You can try the free filter FCE Timecode Display with its default settings to display the original timecode of each clip.
