Time code slowly drifting when printing to tape

I have noticed that my time code is drifting a bit when I print to tape, it gets more noticeable the longer the video i need to print is. Why would it do that?

Well, both should be set to drop frame then....by default. Go to the SEQUENCE>SETTINGS and see if DROP FRAME is checked next to the STARTING TC in the TIMELINE OPTIONS tab.

  • Firewire failure when printing to tape with DSR-11

I have a problem printing to tape with bigger projects. I can't put out to tape more then around 20mins, then the either sound or sound and picture drop.
I have everything rendered and exported to a new, not-selfstanding final cut pro file (Quicktime export) and reimported and put in a new sequence. As I found out, this causes the least problems with complex sequences, sounds etc.
The problem might be related to a occasional image drop out while working on the timeline and watching on the external monitor (through firwire). After a while the connection fails and I have to switch from "all frames" to "none" and back in order to continue watching through the deck.
I checked all settings I know, could it be a hardware problem or a problem with the protocoll of the sony DSR-11 deck (I use DVCAM).
    Thanks for your time !

    Hello Klaus,
I also own and operate a Sony DSR-11 which has worked out just fine for me. However, I recently bought a new firewire cable to replace my 4-year old cable and discovered that you get what you pay for when it comes to cables. After a while the new cable would slip out of the back of the DSR-11 and I would lose my connection during editing and playback. As part of the troubleshooting process I replaced the firewire cable with a "better" one and no longer experience this problem. My only critisism of the DSR-11 is the smaller firewire connection instead of the larger one found on external firewire devices. Good luck.

  • Avoiding multiple renders when printing to tape

I'm currently using FCEHD 3.5 and working in HDV. When I print to tape in HDV, it can take quite a bit of time for FCE to render the file it is going to output to the tape.
If I wanted to create multiple tapes of the same file, is there a way to avoid rendering each time before I print?
In other words, can I export/render the movie once, then print the exported file to tape? If so, how?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes, alas HDV needs rendering each time when you "print to tape" .
That's because FCE process HDV by converting it to "Apple Intermediate Codec" upon capturing (the same thing for iMovie HD), and printing to tape needs the reverse process: converting from Apple intermediate Codec to HDV (mpeg 2 in reality, with GOP-group of images- at each .5 second).
Final Cut Pro can read and print HDV natively.
    Give a look to:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=493862&tstart=0
One workaround for your needs, is to connect 2 HDV camcorders together and record from one to another.

  • Final Cut Pro application quits when print to tape is selected

We have two FCP stations (Intel, 4 GB RAM, DVCPro AJ-D455, timeline is DV/NTSC 720/480, AJA Kona capture card, 10.4.11 OS) Both periodically shut down the application when the print to tape (DV/NTSC analog RGB out)function is started. Tried using with Rosetta check box selected, this seemed to worked initially (a couple of days) but then failed with the same symptoms which cleared when Rosetta was deselected.
Anyone with similar problems or suggestions? The current myth cure is to unplug the firewire Hard drive prior to printing to tape.

You have experienced a 'kernal panic'. Basically there has been either a hardware or software transgression so severe that the system can not contain it or recover from it and so totally shuts down.
Were you able to capture before? Has anything changed?
I didn't know that FCP3 would run under tiger.

  • FCP Crashing When Printing to Tape Using Audio Follows Video Setting

I'm trying to Print to Tape using the Audio Follows Video setting from FCP. I am using a Sony DSR-11 Deck and a Mac Pro. I was able to Print to Tape successfully earlier today, and I have done it successfully many times before. Every time I try to Print to Tape with the Audio Follows Video setting, FCP crashes. Actually, every time I play audio from the timeline using the Audio Follows Video setting, FCP crashes. I have deduced that the problem must be with the Audio Follows Video setting, but I'm not sure what to do to correct the problem. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Well, what version of FCP are you running?
    Final Cut Studio 5
How is your media stored? Number of hard drives, how full are they, ect?
I have two hard drives. One is 250GB the other is 750GB. I have my applications on the 250GB drive. All of my media is on the 750GB drive. My computer is brand new, so I haven't even come close to filling the drives.
What is the format of the media you are trying to send out to the DSR?
I'm going Firewire out of the Mac Pro to the DSR11 to a Mini-DV tape.
Have you tried doing a crash record?
I would rather not do a crash record if at all possible. I know that is a back up option, but I also know that my system is capable of working properly.
I really appreciate you trying to help me out on this.

  • Loosing audio when printing to tape.

I used FCE to edit my DV-material. It wasn't ever a problem.
I bought a HD-camera (Sony HDR-HC3) and edited a 40 minutes film from about 4 hours footage with FCE HD-3.0.
Editing is no problem. Making a DVD is O.K. But printing to tape is horrible. I loose parts of the music-tracks. Sometimes dropped frames etc. (And it takes a lot of time: about 4 hours to render!).
Many times I tried to print to tape. The problems exist every time in different places (except one place where the music always disappears).
I don't know how to loose this problem. I always mixdown audio, remove prefs etc. but till now no positiv result.
    What to do?
    G5-2x1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If there is a song bought on iTune Music Store, you can't use this track.
Did you render an audio mixdown before export ?
Try a test version with just one minute of movie. (set in and out point in timeline and do the print to tape operation).
Try a print to tape from a cold start mac.
Drag your playhead around your sequence before printing (it's seem that this process load the cahe memory, at least in my own experience)
If the problem is still there, you can also do an audio track mix quicktime conversion export (aiff 16 bit) from your sequence, import it into a new sequence, open your previous edited one in editor (option clik), do uncheck audio A1 and A2 target, and drag the video content on V1 in the new sequence. Drag your exported audio on A1 A2.
Do a check for the synch of your movie.
Do not forget to do an audio mixdown before print to tape.
Does your hard drive is fragmented or full at more than 80% level?

  • Timecode problems when Printing to tape HDV sequence

I have a project fully edited in HDV format and I want to make a master on tape to archive. I have done this before with no problems but now I have an odd issue. After FCP has printed to tape and I review the footage on the deck (camera is the recording device). The picture is on tape and looks fine but the timecode is not function properly. Instead of running continuously it freezes and then will skip forward some. Again the picture is there and looks fine. I have switched out the decks and the tapes and tried it 5 times but with the same results. What makes this more odd is the first hour of footage runs properly and then after that the problem starts.
I played back other projects like this that I did the same way and the timecode runs correctly. This is a very odd issue and hoping someone else has seen this before and can help. Thanks!

Try exporting the sequence as a self contained movie, then try recording that. My guts say the HDV you're working with is just not allowing your CPU to keep up with it all, and TC might be where this is showing up. But a single file playing back would make things easier on your system all round, and it's lossless. File/Export/QT movie... then check on make self contained, and leave off recompress all frames. This is lossless quality wise.
Sure it's not just dirty heads or something on your recording devices? LIkely not, but it's a shot in the dark from here.

  • Flash frame when printing to tape?

Ok, this has never happened to me before, I have an hour long show. The whole project is edited and rendered out in one quicktime movie.
I'm using the final QT movie to edit to tape. At the end of a dissolve I am getting a Flash frame, the funny thing is its only happening on the tape. I have gone through the sequence frame-by-frame and there is no indication of an added frame or
bad edit anywhere. Does anyone know why I would get a Flash frame only when I print to Tape?

are you monitoring on a NTSC monitor or your computer. I've seen this when the flashframe is on a field the computer monitor isn't showing, but the ntsc mon will show it. The other thing is when your deck is brought out of record by hitting stop without rolling enough black prior to stopping this can happen but it sounds like you are seeing this in the sequence somewhere not at the end

  • Drop frames when printing to tape !

    HI
I would like some help please !!!
The problem is when I print to tape I keep on getting drop frames
    Here is the run down
The video is normal some where around 1hr 30 min 2hrs long
    3 layers maximum
    The audio is four layers
I have tried “Nesting all items” and then printing to video (it last a little longer but I still get the same problem)
My system stats are as follows
    G5 Dual 2.7 with 3.5GB Ram, 10.4.8, FCP 5.04 650GB Internal HD and 900GB Sata HD
    Thanks

    Maurice,
make sure all your audio is 48K
close all sequences other than the one you are using to print to tape
Try exporting your project as a QT movie then place it back on a new timeline and print to tape that way
make sure your hard drives are not going to sleep
try recording from the timeline rather than using the print to tape function

  • Video freezes when printing to tape

I am trying to print to tape a project that is 1 hour and 3 minutes long. It keeps freezing for some odd reason, fairly new occurrence. I have done nothing different with a similar project the is 54 minutes long. Any suggestions?

The original files are on a 1 TB external storage device connected via USB.
This could be the source of your problem. USB connected drives are not for video as they lack the dedicated throughput necessary to provide an uninterrupted video stream . Connect your drive via firewire (if it has that option) or move the material to a firewire connected drive.
Also, make sure all drives used with video are formatted as MacOS Extended. If they are MS-DOS, you will have problems.

  • Audio Drift when importing VHS Tapes-Do I need a Canopus ADVC 300

Embarking on the daunting task of importing/editting >100 2hr VHS tapes, and want to get the best results for my efforts.
I pop a tape into a VCR connected via S-Video (video) and RCA (audio) cables to a Sony DVMC-DA1 AD converter, and from there to my Mac Pro via Firewire. Use FCE "Capture Now" using NTSC DV Converter setup. Start capture, let it run unattended, and return at my leisure to do some rough editting.
Problem is the audio on the imported clip gradually loses sync, by about 2 seconds by the end of the clip. The sync problem is present on the clip when played with Quicktime as well.
    Questions:
    1. Is there a reasonable way to correct this in FCE?
    2. Since my Sony converter is nearing 10 years old, will use of a more recent AD converter such as the Canopus ADVC 300 result in a perfectly synced import?
    3. If so, can you comment on the Canopus's purported video noise reduction and image stabilization capabilities? Is it noticable/worthwhile?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello,
The problem is the audio is not 'locked' to the video, and your old Sony DVMC-DA1 does not appear to support locked audio.
The only way you might deal with this in FCE itself would be to capture shorter clips (say, under 15 minutes each) which would minimize the degree to which the audio drifts out of sync in each clip. (The longer the clip, the greater the drift.)
Given the large amount of video you wish to digitize (some 200 hours), it will be far preferable to use a Canopus ADVC-100, 110 or higher model - +they all support DV locked audio+ - so the video & audio are sync'd without the need for manual intervention or capturing short clips.
I have used the Canopus 100 & 110 extensively and have been very happy with the results. Sometimes, depending on the VHS tape, there is some slight banding at the very bottom of the image but 1) this is +usually not visible+ in the finished movie because it is outside the 'image safe area' and 2) if necessary can be compensated via about a 2%-4% enlargement of the image in FCE (which is not enough to soften the image).
I have not used the Canopus 300 because I never felt the need, as I am happy with my results from the 100 & 110. Users of the 300 have been pretty positive about its built-in TBC and image cleaning capabilities.

  • Audio recorded from lavalier mic is not audible when printing to tape

    hello!
i am very confused : ( i have an edited work with some audio recorded directly from the built-in camera mic, and most of the audio from a lavalier (lapel) mic. all the audio plays fine from the timeline, and from the "print to video" play back option, when the video playback is set to "none" or "preview"; however, when it is set to ntsc (which i believe i need in order to print it back onto a mini DV tape to submit it) only the audio recorded with the built-in camera mic is clear and audible. the other recorded sounds from the lav mic are very quiet (or silent) and have static noises.
i have exported the timeline and burnt it to a dvd, and all the audio works fine. but i can not seem to print it to a tape without losing most of the audio.
i have tried all different combinations of settings (audio to built in audio, or to firewire), etc etc and nothing seems to fix this problem.
any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks : )

You might try highlighting all the audio tracks
then go to the MODIFY drop down - AUDIO - PAN CENTER.
This should make sure all your audio tracks are audible.
Also, I'm not in front of the interface right now,
but if you go to FINAL CUT PRO drop down - AUDIO / VIDEO
SETTINGS, somewhere in there (perhaps in a tab or at the bottom) is a drop down for PRINT TO VIDEO, and there are
some settings there. Make sure it is including all your
audio channels and not set up in some funky way.

  • FCE 1.01 squishes when printing to minDV tape

I'm a newbie to FCE. I have a 28 minute movie shot from 3 cameras standard ratio. It's all edited and ready to go except when I print to the minDV camera I get a 16x9 ratio and the video is compressed vertically so everyone is taller. It plays in FCE fine but if I uncheck the canvas from " show as square pixels" the canvas now looks like what I'm getting on the tape. I've tried another camera and get the same results when printing to tape. So I figure that FCE is outputting 16x9 when it should be 4X3. How do I get FCE to print normally?

After spending a morning studying the posts and learning about anamorphic I was able to answer my own questions. The problem was I must have changed the input parameters when importing the orginal footage. FCE thought it was anamorphic. I found a post about correcting squished images by cut and paste. I used it and it worked!. Basically I changed the settings in FCE to the standard 4X3 format then added a new sequence and copied the old anamorphic movie into the new tracks of that sequence. With everything still selected I did a remove attributes selection which gave me a choice of which attributes to remove. I only had 3, audio levels and brightness filters and a third called, guess what, distort! I selected distort and removed it and ta da movie saved, squished frames gone. I hope this helps others with similar problems.

  • Losing sync when exporting to tape

My audio is in sync on my timeline but the output drifts out of sync when printing to tape and when simply playing off the timeline to tape (both via firewire). In other words, my computer playback is dead on but my tape is dead wrong. My sequence and clips are 16bit and 48. The deck is set to record 16 bit. As far as I know the footage was captured at 16/48.
The video clips were drifting out of sync on my timeline but I exported it as a Quicktime and I pasted that into my timeline.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

1.If you have placed your audio on the timeline, make sure you put everything to stream.
    export a large project
2.Make sure your computer has a lot of processing power: playing and recording at the same time requires a lot of RAM/CPU, look for idle processes and shut them down.
3.If nothing helps, record Audio/Video seperately and match them afterwards in AfterEffects/Premiere
4.Flash has a maximum amount of frames it can handle (16000 := 10 Minutes), if your project is getting near to that limit, try dividing your project.

  • Printing to Tape keeps stopping on FCP4.5

I read some info on discussion board about experiencing problems when Printing-To-Tape for long projects (1 hour). FCP4.5 will stop after 26 minutes everytime I print to tape a 1 hour project. I heard something about drives stopping after a long project. How can I check this? Is there a time limit that needs to be adjusted? I've done an Audio Mixdown, but still same problem. I've watched it as it reaches that point and then freezez, then continues printing to video but without audio. Why? Can't figure it out! Please help!

Try again, click on the blue apple, then click on About This Mac, when the little window opens it gives some information but you want to click on the button that reads More Information, This opens the System Profiler. On the top left it should read Hardware, dirrectly under that go down to Serial-ATA and select that. The information for your hard drive should be listed on the top right and depending upon how many drives you have in your computer, you select the drives name and all the information about it will be listed down below.
You should be able to find information regarding any of your hardware here, (example) if you have any USB devices hooked in you could select USB to check that information, or if you have a Fire Wire drive, select Fire Wire, ETC.
