Time code zeros out with batch capture

I've captured DVCam footage that had been logged for 10 min increments. FCP captured all footage successfully from start of tape to end in 10 min clips, but the time code for each clip starts at zero. So I have 4 or 5 clips that all have the same time code, but are different content. Any ideas why this may have happened. Oh and it happened through several tapes before we noticed it. Strangely, the last clip on each tape captured with the correct time code...

I've seen this happen before. The only fix I've seen is to recapture the footage.

  • Time code burn ins with FCPX?

I was used to making time code burn ins with FCP7. I see there's no "time code reader" effect in FCPX. Anyone know how to with the new software or with Motion 5?  I suppose I could just use FCP7.

I found out that I could make a timecode reader using a Motion 5 effect.   The "timecode" effect in FCPX only generates, but if you use the "timecode" effect in Motion and publish it to FCPX, it will read the original timecode and you can make a timecode burn-in movie.
I can't seem to do the connect clip trick, but I can select all clips in the project, and then double click the effect and it will apply to all.
    I hope that helps.

  • Online help with Batch Capture

I'm trying to online a sequence in a tapeless workflow.  I'm using Log & Transfer along with Batch Capture but Batch Capture keeps looking for a deck.  How do I get it to look for my Hi-Res digital files?

    Yeah...that's the problem.
You directly imported it and worked with it natively? What is this footage? From what camera?
The only way to offline/online with tapeless is to bring in the footage via Log and Transfer.  Log and Transfer to ProRes Proxy...then you can Batch Capture to a higher data rate ProRes format.

  • Help with Batch Capturing, Timecode Issues?

Hi Final Cut Pro Pro's. I've just come over from Avid.
I have a problem with capturing - I have a lot of tapes to capture and there is no way I will make deadline doing it by individual capture - I need to batch capture. My tape shows no timecode breaks and I have already spent hours logging all the various clips. It shows it has registered all of the media start/end timecodes, but when I click on batch capture, it says
BATCH CAPTURE: TIMECODE ERROR: UNABLE TO LOCATE THE SPECIFIED TIMECODE. YOU MAY HAVE SPECIFIED A TIMECODE WITH INSUFFICIENT ROOM FOR A PRE/POST ROLL OPERATION.
I don't understand as there is clearly a functioning timecode? This is going to break my balls if I have to go through this individually, no time! Anyone? Any ideas?
    Thank you.

I'm capturing from the camera directly, a Sony DSR-250...
It turns out that yes, if you have marked the in/out point too close to the head or the tail of the tape, or even if you have marked it okay and are currently at the start/end of tape when pressing on batch capture it cannot send the command to the device. If you move forward or backward accordingly by five or six seconds it doesn't come up anymore.
Thanks for all the responses, I'm going to make deadline now. Apple forums are my hot hot S€X.

  • Problems with Batch Capture

I have a G5 Quad and Final Cut Studio (with FCP 5) and am running Leopard. Everything was running smoothly until about 2 months ago. I reinstalled Leopard ... from a clean install. I reinstalled FCP and everything worked well, EXCEPT. Now when I try a Batch Capture ... I set up 5 or 6 clips then tell FCP to capture all. It will rewind to the first clip ... the screen shows "go to cueing source material" ... less than a second of the clip shows, the screen then shows "go to cueing source material" ... then I get an error message - "dropped frames"
This is the same camera that I used before the install. I am hoping that this is just some "dumb" thing I forgot to click.
    Any suggestions

Which camera? Also post the last time you had it serviced... if the heads get dirty or the tracking is off one whit, you'll get these error messages.

  • 1st generation time capsule 'ambers out' with increasing frequency...

Basically the title, but it seems that after several hours, my Time Capsule (1st gen) will just amber out. I can still do things locally and I'll get a 'double NAT' warning. That's all fixed once I unplug and replug in the TC, for a while that is.Then eventually, it'll 'get tired' and just amber out with the same warning. Basically, it's fast becoming very difficult to keep a working rythym since it's constantly going down (when green, throughput is great - 5MB in from the WAN and full(ish) gigabit ethernet locally). It's on a plant ledge with plenty of air flow and it doesn't ever seem TOO hot (just warm) so I doubt it's an overheating issue, but who knows.
    Anyway, who knows?
    Thanks!

The Time Capsule is telling you that you do not have it configured correctly to work most effectively on your network.
Double NAT is usually an indication that you another router "upstream" from the Time Capsule....(you might call this device your "modem", but it is likely a router). This can cause network slow downs and IP address conflicts.
Both your "modem" and the Time Capsule are trying to perform routing duties. You only want one device on a network to handle the routing chores.
If you want to pursue this further, what is the make and model number of your "modem"?

  • Troublw with Batch Capture

I am currently reimporting a sequence I originally edited in ProRes Proxy from AVCHD camera originals. I have made an off line copy of the sequence in media manager with 1 sec handles. When I batch capture the new sequence log and transfer finds all the correct original clips and begins the re-import process. I can watch the mov files being created in the scratch capture folder. After each mov file is created it is then mysteriously deleted when Log and Transfer moves on to the next clip. At the end of the process the final clip is automatically deleted from the folder leaving it empty. Manually importing clips from the same mounted volumes work correctly. This problem occurs no matter what the drive array I capture to and no matter what ProRes resolution I capture in. I am on FCP Ver.7. Anybody have any ideas how to remedy this situation. Thanks.

try capturing to your startup drive as a test. if that works, I would suspect a problem with the raid.

What is the easiest way to Automatically Remove Duplicates from my iTunes Library (instead of doing it one by one, which is unfeasible when there are Hundreds of duplicates from installing the newest version of iTunes, or putting it and all of your songs on a New Computer, and it loosing track of all of your File Folders and Playlists, so you have to re-import everything, hence why the Thousands of Duplicates...
I know there are programs you can BUY that will remove Duplicate Tracks from your iTunes Library, but iTunes is Free, so why should I PAY to fix something that's screwed up about it?

See my tips on duplicates. If iTunes creates duplicates when you add content then it is a failure of the workflow you are using.
Upgrading iTunes should have no adverse effect on your library, however you should maintain a backup regardless.

  • Disk Utility - Format Time for 500GB (Zero Out Data)

    Hello.
Is there one length of time for formatting a hard drive with one pass of Zero Out Data? For instance, does the length of time change depending if you format with zeros using USB2, FW400, FW800, or eSATA?
    *My Format Setup*
    LaCie Rugged 500GB All-Terrain (USB2 & FW400/800)
    FW800 Cable
    GUID Partition Table
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Zero Out Data (One Pass)
I'm formatting with a FW800 connection. Disk Utility has said it will take 1.5 hours for about 3.5 hours now. The blue bar has progressed even though the time remaining is incorrect. At this rate, it will take seven hours to format 500GB.
I'm going to be formatting multiple 500GB and 1TB drives, and I'm wondering if the time I'm experiencing is normal. Therefore, it should take a day to format 1TB with one pass of zeros. Is this correct?
Thank you for your help! =)

It takes a long time to zero out data on a 500GB drive. The larger the drive, the longer it takes. I don't think the connection makes a difference, since each of your listed options are high speed. Never tried it on an external with USB 1.1, so can't give you any real time experience there. But it will take well over an hour to write zeros on every block of a 500GB drive.

  • Batch Capture Problems - only some of batch being captured each time

I'm editing on a MacBook Pro with final cut version 5.1.4., with an operating system of OSX 10.4.10, off of an DVX100B in NTSC mode (at 30P settings) and when I try to Batch Capture, it won't capture all the clips. It acts as if it's capturing all of them, and at the end it tells me it has, but when i press "ok", there are only about a third of them that were actually captured, and I have to start again, and go through the batch about 4-5 times to get them all captured.
    HELP!
    Thanks

    Superstitious, indeed.
As noted, we can't tell much from where we're sitting. Welcome to the forum, too.
Beginners' issues with batch capturing are often traced to not completely understanding how logging works. Maybe you have designated several overlapping clips.

  • Timecode changes when batch capturing

I am capturing betacam sp footage into FCP 5.1 on a dual G5 2.3 box, and using a Kona LSe card. Timecode is running through the 422. For the most part, things are going smoothly, but I am now running into an issue where when I batch capture my logged clips, the last 10 to 15 sec. is chopped off. I generally can just enter the time code again manually to fix the issue, but some of my clips are 8 to 10 min long (interviews), and my client is getting irritated that we are having to capture them again. I also tend to batch capture the majority of these long bites overnight for next morning's session, and they are now consistently coming in with the ends lopped off. FCP is actually changing the timecode on the clip, making me question whether or not I entered it correctly the first time. To prove that I'm not crazy, I monitored the capture on the first couple of clips, and sure enough, FCP decides that I don't need the last 15 sec of my clip, and changes the timecode accordingly during the capture.
What's going on? Is it the Kona card or its software? Thanks.

Well I recently had a similar problem that is really driving me crazy.
    While capturing 720p 59.94 from the D5
In FCP when I log a clip at:
    01:20:00:00 in
    01:20:30:00 out
After Batch Capture is complete the clip shows up in the browser as:
    01:19:55:05 in
    01:20:25:05 out
FCP is effectively changing the logged timecode of the clip.
In all my experience with FCP I have never encountered this issue and I am completely puzzled. I've contacted AJA and they have said that they do not know of this issue and were puzzled also. The only thing about my current configuration that is not completely right is that I am not using a Tri-Level Sync at the moment. We get ours tomorrow. AJA suggests using the Tri-Level Sync with the Kona 3 card, but would that cause a glitch of this nature? I will try again tomorrow of course and update, but does having bad 720p reference effect how FCP logs and handles TC? To my knowledge it shouldn't and makes me think that there may be some sort of FCP error occurring. There is no reason why FCP should be changing my logged clip settings. Also, I tried a test where I made the clip that came in with the bad timecode offline, and then ran a Bath Capture again, and it changes the logged timecode even further. I've tried a variety of Device Control settings playing with frame offset etc with all having the exact same numeric result (see TC above).
Anyone who has any insight or similar experience your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help

  • Batch capture HDV error

I have FCP 5.14 and have just logged a bunch of HDV footage offline. I did this the normal way I would when capturing DV footage, marking the in and out point and then log the clip, standard stuff?
When I try to Batch capture the offline clips it captures only 1 frame from each clip, then the clip details are also effected, ie the Media start and media end of my clips changes from what they where into two new time codes 1 frame either side of the newly captured clip.
Is this a program error or am I just completely useless??? Can somebody help me please

Not sure if this is your exact problem, but I've had issues with Batch Capturing HDV in FCP 5.1.4 using both a Sony M15U and M25U.
The deck would seek to the appropriate place on the tape and then just jog back and forth looking for the right start point. It would do this about 3 times and then give up.
The solution for this was a DROP FRAME / NON-DROP FRAME setting in FCP. If you go to your A/V Settings and then to the Device Control Presets tab and edit your preset (If it's locked you can just make a copy of it and edit the copy - I am using the Sony HDV firewire preset). If you know what your footage was shot in (drop or non) make this setting adjustment. If you don't know, try both.
As soon as this not so little detail was checked everything batch captured without fail. Just make sure there aren't any timecode breaks on your tape.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time code concerns

I want to capture video from mini dv to my external hard drive. I am unable to batch capture because the tape has time code breaks. If I capture the entire one hour tape with capture settings set for non-controllable device (under device control) will it create a new time code.. or will I end up with a quicktime file that has time code breaks in it? If I want to split the one hour tape up into segments divided by date and maintain time code settings so that I can use the tape as a backup if the hard drive crashes... what is the best way to do this? Will splitting one big one hour quicktime file into several smaller ones cause any problems? I'm thinking that the smaller clips will be easier to keyword and find the clip I'm looking for in future projects.
    Thanks!

I'm having difficulty capturing that way from the beginning.. working with tape seems very slow for finding the in and out points as it winds/rewinds .. Batch capturing also isnt working due to inadequate pre-clip time code and/or breaks.. I'm thinking that just setting the tape to run for an hour. and then splitting it up into further clips in quicktime or fcp after is a bit easier to do from the quicktime files..
    1. Im not sure why my transferred tapes comes up with a few breaks.. the tape timecode starts at 0 and ends at 60 so even if I captured with non controllable device and it takes it from 0 to 60 my time code should be correct? If I dont use non-controllable.. where do I set the settings to record a new clip upon finding time code break automatically?
    2. Does assembling a new edited clip by cutting and pasting pieces of larger clips together in either quicktime or fcp maintain the original timecode of the clip from the tape?
    3. Is there a place to locate the date encoded on the film.. I press a button on the camera and it brings up the date, but the date doesnt show on the film, where does fcp record this encoded date info?
    thanks!

  • Help!  Batch Capture Changes My Logged Clips' Media Start & Media End

I'd be very grateful for any help on this.
I log a tape with about 40 clips ranging from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. I select the clips and start a batch capture. Everything appears to be capturing normally and I receive no error messages or dropped frame warnings - after my last clip is captured I get a "Successfully Captured" message.
However, as soon as I click "Finished," all of my clip media start's, media end's, and durations in the log window arbitrarily change to weird times. All my media start points are 26 frames too early (I've tripple-checked that "Add Handles" is indeed deactivated), and the media end points make no sense at all.
A clip that was once 44 seconds long is now only 12 seconds long, the media end point moved a whopping 34:03 too early. Another clip will become 2 seconds longer, the media start point still shifted back 26 frames, but with the media end now 31 frames too late. Checking the original files on my drive confirms that only these weird, unusable segments are what has been captured.
What complicates things is that I just discovered today that if I capture locally to my internal hard disk, the clips capture normally (the times remain unchanged). But if I set my capture scratch to my external hard drive (a LaCie F800 2-TB RAID-5 using Firewire-800), that's when the clips start changing themselves. I ran disk utility and found no errors on the drive, and have never had a problem with it or any part of my configuration until the last month or so... the only changes to my system being the regular use of Software Update.
On top of that, my colleague is experiencing a similar problem with batch capture changing his clip times, even though he is using a different computer (single-processor G5), a different video deck (Sony DHR-1000), and a different storage medium (Apple Xserve RAID).
So my question is: What is happening! The only thing I can think of is that perhaps some update has a bug - but I can't find anyone with a similar problem online.
Any help on this would be extremely appreciated! Thank you in advance for your advice.
    Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4) Deck: JVC CU-VH1 / Storage: LaCie F800 2-TB RAID-5
    Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Here's an update on this. Both my colleague and I have confirmed that if we capture to an internal or external drive that is not a RAID FCPro batch captures just fine.
But, if the drive we are capturing to is a RAID (in my case a LaCie Biggest F800 and his case an Apple Xserve), then we get dropped frame reports and/or clip in's and out's changing after the batch capture is complete.
We even tried reformatting one of the xServe's and rebuilding it as non-journaled, it didn't solve the problem.
It seems impossible that we're the only ones to be experiencing this problem... does anybody have any help or suggestions!?
