Time for a new HDD?

Just looking for some verification of my suspicions with my MBP.  About two days ago I noticed my browser was sluggish, but just thought it was a network issue.  Last night, basically every click resulted in a beach ball.  On a restart, jt took a good five minutes to get to log in and the same awful performance.
I verified the disk and it said it needed repair.  So I start pulling files off and attempted to do a Superduper clone, but that hung up.  I did manage to get a Time Machine backup done overnight and it was actually running Ok this AM after leaving it on overnight.   Gave me a chance to copy more individual files. Ran disk utility off the cd drive and tried a repair which failed.
The quick hardware test says everything is fine.  Im running the long one now.
So between my year old clone (I know, not very diligent with backup), recent Time Machine backup and just copying docs and media, I think I'm prepared to recover at this point (just hope I have my MS Office key).
My question is if this sounds like a hard dive that is ready to call it quits.  I cant recall any new software or anything significant I've done recently that would have screwed up the disk on the software side.  Trying to avoid wasting time on setting things back up just to have it fail.  Sorry for any typos or missing punctuation, typing long form on an iPad really is terrible.
Computer is a 15" MBP i7.  About 3 years old now, but i guess they do t make hard drives like they used to.  As evidenced by the OEMs cutting their warranties.  Never had a drive fail when I had PCs and this was my first Mac, so I'm not sure what else to check.

Good move in backing up your Mac.  As you noted you shoud have a current backup at all times anyway.
First, disks are disks and they fail at the same rate in Macs and PCs.  It is not yet clear that yours is failing, but it could be.  Let's assume it is the disk or the filesystem and proceed with that.  If it is not, then it could be incompatible software causing the issue.
With a sudden slowdown, if you have not changed any software, the disk is a prime suspect.  To check this issue run Disk Utiity (from the Applications > Utilities folder).
Click on the upper left disk name and see if the S.M.A.R.T. status says "Verified".  If it doesn't then the hard drive is indeed failing.  Stop there and report back.
Click on Verify Disk and report back any error message in red or that if finished normally with an green OK message.
Then click on the volume icon (indented below the disk icon, usually called "Macintosh HD").  Click on Verify Disk again and again report any red error messages or the it finished with a green OK message.
If it did not finish normally it will instruct you to boot from the recovery partition and repair the disk from there.
Boot from the recovery partition, start Disk Utility, and repair this disk.
http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
If this cured the problem then see if it boots and runs OK.  If not reïnstall OS X.
Select Reïnstall OS X, then click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).
If that did not fix the problem then it is probably a software issue.

  • Is it time for a new one or can it be fixed.

I have had my iPod classic for close to 4 years now and it has started to freeze during a song, won't come off hold, and won't light up though I can still see the song info. in the background. I have let it sit for awhile and have even tried to put it on the charger to see if it would do anything but there was no change. Its had problems before of freezing but not like this and at those times I was able to let it run dead and charge it back up again and it was fine. I don't know if it is fixable or if it time for a new one. I'm going to have to pay to get it fixed I know because the warrenty has been up for awhile and if it ends up being expensive I'll probably just end up buying a new one. I just want to know if anyone has an idea of what I should do or if anyone else has had the similar problem. Thanks you so much.

You actually don't have a Classic. The Classic has only been available since Sept 07. If you have any other questions to post, you might want to make sure that you post in the correct forum as you will generally get better answers. Use this article to determine which iPod you really have:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
And the button combo is menu+center button. All iPods freeze up occasionally, just like all computers do. In and of itself, it may be indicative of nothing.
    Best of luck.

  • Time for a new battery or something worse?

I have a 17 inch MBP which I think is great.
However in the last few weeks the mechine will not work from the battery despite it showing as being fully charged. As soon as the powersupply is removed....nothing. Pressing the power button to restart sounds like the mechine is trying to restart but then imediatly has the power cut.
I hope this makes some sence to some one?
    The battery details are below.
    Battery Information:
      Model Information:
      Device Name:          CL5189
      Pack Lot Code:          0
      PCB Lot Code:          0

I am hoping it is just time for a new battery but can anyone think of another reason this will happen.
The mechine has NOT been dropped and nothing has been spilt on it.

  • Time for a new battery (or more) for  iBook G4?

I have a 3 1/2 year old 14" ibook G4 - I have the original battery (possible clue?) and before it became completely unresponsive to powering up, it would suddenly turn off, even with the power adapter plugged in. I've tried all the things Apple recommends - removing and reinserting the battery, resetting the PMU using the SCOP keystrokes, removing the battery while plugging in the adapter, and removing the adapter and trying to start on battery power only, and all permutations of the above. Nada. No chime, start up screen, or whirring fan...Silence.
When the adapter is plugged into the iBook, the color is orange, even after ~ 15 hours of charging.
Is it time for a new battery, adapter, DC in board?

Well, the story is a little different now. At first, when I got a new battery - from OWC, when I used the ac adapter, the computer would start up, but even after 12 hours of charging, the battery indicator was at 0% charged, and after 2 or 3 cycles of turning the machine on and off, it eventually wouldn't turn on at all, even with the ac adapter plugged in. so I bought a new ac adapter, and it will turn on , but the battery indicator still says 0% charged. Just to verify if the battery was indeed not charged, I unplugged the ac adapter and the computer would not turn on at all.
So for now, I have a laptop with a new battery and a new ac adapter that will only work if the ac adapter is plugged in, and the battery appears to not be able to charge.
    Question:
Is it time for a new Dc-in board, just leave well enough alone and run off the adapter, get a new computer or????

  • Isn't it a time for a new E61i firmware?

I am sure that may be true for a lot of Nokia phones, but based on what I am reading here and on other Nokia forums, doesn't it sound like it may be a time for a new firmware?
There is certainly a few "issues" to be addressed there.

I think yes. However no one here can exactly assure you on this. You can address this few bugs to nokia by http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4222231

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

  • Time for a new battery?

I have a iPod video, I checked it's warranty date and it started in Jan. 2006, so it isn't THAT old. However, the iPod won't turn on. I charged it for at least 48 hours straight and there was still 0 battery life. After only 1 year, is it time for a new battery? And do I have to go to the Apple Store for that? And how much $ would it cost?
    Thanks

You can get Apple to replace the battery, though a 3rd party authorized repair place might do it cheaper...
You could try using the iPod updater to fully restore the original settings, just in case the iPod isn't properly managing power, but you probably have a bad battery. Be sure to read Apple's documentation on battery life. It basically says keep the iPod away from heat and be sure to exercise the battery--keeping it plugged in all the time will reduce it's life. I think they say something like the ideal is using the battery all day and charging it at night. ...as long as you never fully discharge it. There's also information like how many charge cycles the battery is supposed to have, etc.

Have you tried a simple reset of the iPod to see if that does any good first?  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
It might also hurt to try a full restore of the iPod in iTunes as well.  This process wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and reloads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.  This would help eliminate the possibilty of a software issue/glitch and/or data corruption on the iPod.

  • Battery health=40% time for a new battery?

So from tiger cache cleaner I got the following information
    capacity=1773 mAh
    cycle count = 327

    voltage= 16466mV
    absoluteMaxCapacity=4400 mAh

My ibook g4 1.2ghz is about 16 months old and has been used everyday. I have frequently left it on and have plugged it in when it is low or out of batteries.
Recently for about the past 3 weeks, while showing a full or 60% charge, my ibook will shut down at random. When I start it up again, it will stay on for 10 to 20 minutes unplugged before it shuts off again. When plugged in it works fine. I have not tried a new battery, I have not reset the PMU (it said all Ram disks will be permenently erased?) and it will not let me calibrate the battery because it will not stay on long enough to drain it. When I push the batteries button I get two green lights out of four.
is it time for a new battery? Is says I have done 327 cycles.
    thanks for all the help.

It's supposed to keep 80% capacity after 300 charge cycles.
A PMU reset is in order:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Don't worry about a RAM disk. You have to have created one in order for there to be one to be erased. If you don't know what one is, you don't have one.
Try resetting the PMU and see if that will allow you to calibrate the battery.
If things still aren't working right, a new battery is probably in order.
