Time for a new startup disk for beige G3 - which one?

What is a good replacement startup disk [still using 9 GB it shipped with]? I'd also like to install a second internal drive.

Hi, Terry -
Your Beige G3 is one of the models subject to the 8GB limit. This is simply an item of concern, not one of hindrance.
Once you get the new drive installed, initialize it using OS 9's Drive Setup while booted to your OS 9 Install CD. If you are adding the drive as a second internal drive, you can use Drive Setup while booted to the original hard drive.
As part of the initialization process, partition the drive such that the first (top in the list) volume is slightly less than 8GB - 7.7GB is a safe size. Then complete the initialization. Be sure to select Mac OS Extended (also called HFS+) as the format.
If you're not familiar with doing that - Using Drive Setup
Then place OS 9 on the first partition. OS 9 is not fussy about where programs are, so those can be placed on the other parition if you wish. However, the machine will run a little bit faster if the programs are kept on the same volume as the OS.

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

  • Why can't I use iDisk for a back-up disk for Time Capsule?

    G'Day All,
I am new to apple and mostly am loving it! Being new to this product has me asking some basic questions, like ... why can't I use iDisk for a back-up disk for Time Capsule?
Here I have something like 20 gb disk space available, but it seems I need to buy an external hard drive (or an airport) in order to use, what I believe is one of apples greatest inventions, the Time Machine...
Can anyone correct my flawed understanding or, better yet, teach me how to do it properly?
    Cheers
    Gabriel

Speed makes sense, but I thought I had plenty of size available ... never mind! Looking over some of the other posts, it looks as though I'd be better off with an external Hard drive than the Apple Time Capsule (if I want more than 12-18months service).
That was true of some of the ones made a couple of years ago (many of which Apple replaced way beyond the warranty period, and even some beyond the 3-year AppleCare period). Presumably Apple has fixed the power supply problem in the newer units, so they'll last longer.
If you don't have AppleCare for your Mac, I'd strongly suggest buying it. If you do, and buy a TimeCapsule, Airport, or other accessory within 2 years, it's covered, too.
But unless you need a wireless router, yes, paying for one in a Time Capsule doesn't make sense. A good external HD is a much better buy.
thank you for the links - I am still getting used to the way Apples work ...

  • Need Startup Disk for OS X

Where can I get a replacement Startup Disk for OS X? I have an ancient iMac running OS X version 10.6.8. When I try to verify disk using the disk utility i get a message that my disk is corrupt and needs to be repaired by booting from the startup disks. Unfortunately the OS was already installed on my computer and I do not have any startup disks. Can I find them anywhere? I appreciate your time and suggestions.

You already did the Verify. Now you need to repair.
Hold down the C key while booting from your install disc.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart

Followed your link to how to contact msi and filled out the information.  However have not seen nor heard anything beyond that.
Followed your link to the files recommended to burn to a disk. Found that "ati_system_drive_mb.zip" has among other things; A total of  2,137 files, 32 application files, 1 setup application file, 20 read me files and 323 Windows installer packages.  As best I can tell there are no instruction in this zip to explain how to run the files or what they are for.
At the present all I want to do is reload the onboard video drivers.
1 - Chinese New Year holidays began Jan. 23 and celebrations last 15 days from that. With 2 week plus backlog it may be quite some time before you get a reply.
2 - Download and install the ATI system drivers. Run the setup application file. The OS should determine itself which files to install as needed.

  • Where can I find a startup disk for Powermac 7600?

When I tried to boot my powermac 7600 i received the '?' icon in the center of the screen.  So I thought I would try to boot from the startup disk.  Uh-Oh, I seem to have lost my startup disk to my powermac 7600.  Where can I find a start up disk?  Or is their another way around the issue?

A Disk Tools PPC file can be found via Apple's Older Software Downloads list (http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html).
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.1_Update/Disk_Tools_PPC.img.bin
A floppy from the above file should work as a startup disk for your computer (it is intended for Mac OS 8.1 and Mac OS Extended, but it should at least allow you to boot the 7600). However, the problem is that you would have to locate someone with another old (pre-1998) Macintosh computer with Disk Copy 6.3.3 (the Make a Floppy command under the Utilities menu) in order to create the floppy.

  • "No enought room on startup disk for Application Memory" when using the Accelerate Framework

    Dear colleagues,
I am running what I know is a large problem for a scientific application (tochnog) a finite element solver that runs from the Terminal. The application tries to solve 1,320,000 simultaneous linear equations. The problem starts when I use the Accelerate Framework as the Virtual Memory size jumps from 142 G to about 576 G after the library  (LAPACK) is called to solve the system. It does not do it if I use a solver that does not calls LAPACK inside Accelerate.
The machine is a mac pro desktop with 8 GB of ram, the 2.66 GHz Quad-core Intel and the standard 640 GB hard drive. The system tells me that I have 487 GB available on hard drive.
The top instruction in Terminal reads VM 129G vsize when starting. When I run the finite element application once the LAPACK library in the Accelerate framework gets called, the Virtual Memory (VM) jumps to 563 G vsize.
After a short while, I get the "No enought room on startup disk for Application Memory error"
This is a screen capture of the application attempting to solve the problem using the LAPACK library inside the Accelerate framework: Here are the numbers as reported by the activity Monitor.
    Tochnog Real Memory 6.68 GB
System Memory  Free: 33.8 MB, Wired 378.8 MB, Active 5.06 GB, Inactive 2.53 GB, Used 7.96 GB.
VM size 567.52 GB, Page ins 270.8 MB, Page outs 108.2 MB, Swap used 505 MB
This is a screen copy of the same application solving the same problemwithout using the Accelerate framework.
    Tochnog Real Memory 1.96 GB,
System Memory  Free: 4.52 MB, Wired 382.1 MB, Active 2.69 GB, Inactive 416.2 GB, Used 3.47 GB.
VM size 148.60 GB, Page ins 288.8 MB, Page outs 108.2 MB, Swap used 2.5 MB
I can not understand the disparity in the behavior for the same case. As I said before, the only difference is the use of Accelerate in the first case. Also, as you can see, I thought that 8 GB of ram memory was a lot.
Your help will be greatly appreciated
    Best regards,
    F Lorenzo

The OP had posted this question in the iMac Intel forum.
I replied along similar lines, but suggested he repost this in the SL forum where I know there are usually several people who have a far better grasp of these issues than I.
I would be interested in getting their take on this.
Although, I think you are coming to the correct conclusion that there are not enough resources available for this process, I'm not certain that what you are saying on the way to that conclusion is correct. My understanding of VM is that it is the total theoretical demand on memory a process might make. It is not necessarily the actual or real world demand being made.
As such, this process is not actually demanding 568GB (rounded.) As evidence of that, you can see there is still memory available, albeit quite small, in the form of free memory of 33.8MB and inactive of 2.53GB (the GB for that figure, above, seems like it might be a typo, since for the process when not using Accelerate the reported figure for inactive was 416.2 GB -- surely impossible) and 7.96GB used. The process, itself, is using 6.68GB real memory.
In addition, I question whether the OP has misstated the 487GB free drive space. I think that might be the total drive capacity, not the free space.
My guess is that it is the combination of low available memory and low free drive space prompting this error.
    From Dr. Smoke on VM:
it is possible that swap files could grow to the point where all free space on your disk is consumed by them. This can happen if you are very low on both RAM and free disk space.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/2232469?messageID=2232469&#2232469
This gets more to the actual intent of your question...
EDIT: Looks like some kind of glitch right now getting to the Dr. Smoke post.

    Hi,
I want to create a startup disk for lion before I upgrade to Mountain Lion. What size USB drive should I buy, 4gb, 8gb etc? Any help is appreciated.

You can re-install the OS without affecting your other data. Since oops do happen, do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.
Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Call AppleCare.    If they don't have it, then the 10.4.6 retail installer can at least give you the ability to install the lowest possible operating system:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
And the 10.4.11 combo PowerPC update will help you bring yourself back up to where you currently are.
Mind you, you should backup your data prior to installing anything.  There are 10.4 compatible versions of Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper that can make an exact replica of your Mac to a Firewire hard drive, and Firewire 400/800 cables that can connect current Firewire 800 drives, if you can't find a 400 drive.
http://www.macsales.com/ sells lots of good external hard drives for Macs.
Do not buy a hard drive with manufacturer backup software installed as that may not remain compatible through updates.
You can't get Classic installed without the restore discs.
Some Apple usergroups may have people with the correct restore discs:
