Time for an upgrade?

Hey guys,
I have quite a bit of money saved up and can now afford an upgraded macbook. First a bit of history..
I have only ever owned one macbook, I bought it 4-5 years ago. Its one of the old C2D 2GB ram and it was way before the new unibody upgrade and the LED glass upgrade and the giant trackpad upgrade. Its pretty much falling apart now, just wear and tear over the years I havn't been treating it like dirt. The sideskirts around the screen are starting to come off, the keys arn't as 'pressy?' as they use to be and the screen quality isn't as vibrant as it was and its a very rough looking laptop now.
I use this laptop every day of my life, I use it in bed, I use it when I come home from work when I can't be bothered to switch my Imac on, and I use it when I have my son round so I can keep an eye on the lil guy whilest still watching youtube videos! What do I use my macbook for? Well I use it for internet browsing and youtube mainly and music. I don't play games on it although if I could I would, I would play old games like sims and classic RPGS, unfortunatly my macbook can't handle these sort of games very well with its low grade, 4 year old intergrated graphics. My computer is starting to come to a crawl now and is crashing alot as well due to the amount of stuff i have on there and I don't really want to format and my screensize is tiny, its about 13" (or even less, I can't remember, its small either way!)
But what do you guys recommend I do? Is it time for an upgrade or should I make do with what I have? Thanks guys, apprieacte your help and if its worth upgrading which one do you recommend I purchase based on my needs.

If you've come to depend on Firewire for anything, it is now gone unless you buy a Pro, and then it is Firewire 800, which requires a 400 to 800 cable.
The battery is not user removable. The plus side is that it lasts longer on a charge. Old RPGs may not even run on a modern MacBook, unless they have been ported. See my FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macgamepages.html
The current non-Pro MacBooks are still 13". And there is a 13" Pro MacBook.
You don't need to format to fix crashing issues. First backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then we can isolate why there are crashes.
You may just need a larger internal hard drive.

  • Time for an Upgrade, Question first

I have an older system and want to upgrade the AMD Athalon 2200 to a 2800 Sempron (preferably a 512k cache one =)), but question is I have not flashed the bios in about a year and 4 months or so. The last time I flashed I updated to a version 1.9. Would I need to up the ROM to the current version that MSI Live Monitor shows, 1.0C to put the Sempron in the socket A and have al work well?
And would a nVidia, preferably MSI 6200 or 6600 Video card work well on my KT4V?
Suggestions are welcome, and no I cannot afford a new mainboard and 64 bit cpu  so those two will have to do for now.
    Thanks in advance

Paulie, I would not recommend doing the video card if you are going to upgrade the mainboard.
Why?  The mainboard you currently have is AGP.  The current standard now is PCI-E with AGP being left behind.
That is the reason I recommended the RS480M2 board.
The RS480M2 does support PC2100 and PC2700 ram along with PC3200.

  • Time for a new PC?

Two question I am frequently asked are: "What computer is right for me?" and  "Do you accept immediate trade-ins?"  The first answer is more a matter of personal choice and need.  In other words, how do you currently use a computer? How will you grow into the capabilities of a new PC over the next two or three years? To the second question, stores do recycle but do not offer immediate trade-in or sell used equipment.  We encourage everyone to check out the value of their functional electronic devices for a credit or at least recycle items.
Recently, Best Buy has partnered with Intel to provide a tool.  The "Discover the Difference of a New PC" guide asks, "is it time for an upgrade?"  It assesses the abilities of your currently working PC as compared to a new PC.  I am impressed with how easy it is to use this website, especially if you know your current processor type and speed, amount of RAM, and amount of hard drive storage.  [Hint: right-click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Properties" to find these values.]  Then the tool suggests what to shop for in a new PC and provides you average trade-in value from http://bestbuytradein.com.  From there you can click to begin selecting the Intel-based PC right for you. The only way this could be easier is if it did all the work for you.  However, isn't shopping half the fun?

Been using an ipad 2 without passcode for quite some time. While upgrading to ios 7, I enabled Find Iphone on the Ipad. It asked for passcode and I gave one. Now I forgot it. Connected it iTunes (on my windows 8 system) with which I sync and that too required an update as old version of itunes cannot read ios7. Problem is itunes does not want to get updated. Some vague error on not having right to write a file in ProgramData folder wheras as an admin i have full rights. Next I downloaded the install file from itunes site - no luck it would not install. Then I tried to remove itunes - it does not want to go. Am at wits end... Is the option only to restore it as a new Ipad?

Place the iPhone into recovery mode and restore the iPhone with iTunes on your computer.

  • Apple: Please post an estimated up time for the iPhone 2.0/iTunes Upgrade

Like many fellow iPhone users, I've been having a devil of a time completing my iPhone upgrade. It's stuck in iPhone purgatory awaiting a connection to iTunes to complete, and in turn, is a worthless shiny brick. If you could post an estimated time for the resolution of this problem, it would help me and many others from enduring hours or frustration and attempted workarounds (click on Music, then your phone, then music, then your phone, then the store, then the phone, click your heels three times). I work for a technology company, and we find that communicating the issue to the users is always better then letting them bang their heads against a wall asking 'why why why' while they cant get their work done.

The GOOD news is I installed 2.0... (I've been so excited about the new Apps!!!)... The BAD news is - Now I just have an image of a USB cable and iTunes logo on my phone and an error message in iTunes: "An unknown error occurred (-4)." ...please try again later.
More BAD news - All of these fantastic apps I've already purchased and I just want to use them, but no phone to use them on anymore. I'm sorry, but I can't live without my iPhone! I don't know where I'm supposed to be right now without my iCal... I don't know any of my friends phone numbers so I can't call them for help... I don't even know my Bank information because that was in there too.
    - Please make it work again Apple! Please

  • Classic to OsX offered some time for upgrading. Lion didn't unfortunately.

Classic to OsX offered some time for upgrading I didn't relize when I went to Lion I was going to have to make the sacrafices that I did. I can't use my old Australian version of Accounting Edge 5 anymore. This has posed a real problem for our small business. It was my fault for not checking befor I jumped but really liked what was on offer. Wasn't really ready to upgrade. I am also sad to say goodbye to my old favouriteprograham that got me out of a lot of trouble, Appleworks I will miss you.  Goodbye Appleworks :-( Love Applle :-)
    From Pryceless65

Looks like i'm about 3,000,000 posts too late now I've done some reading i'm informed to what I could have done and should have done and should not have done. I am impressed withe Lion, not being informed was a crime on my part, having said that I didn't need warning labels on the last few upgrades over the last few years so thought it might just be another walk in the park. Having a shop running on Mac and never needing a Techy over the last 12 years has been great. It takes a little digging to solve the puzzles we come accross but I have alway's enjoyed a good puzzle. It's the dawning of a new era, bring it on with Lion I'm sure we'll grow to love you too.

iOS6 and iphoto, iPad, Apple TV sync problem still unresolved. Turning on and off a few times per community advice have not helped. What should I do now? wait for an upgrade fix?
"&" is not the obvious bug/answer. Not sure what went wrong as I cannot select albums and events for sync. Situation is worse for iPad and Apple TV when error 1140 message popped up even before backup get completed.

Download and install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update, which was just released today. It may be the answer to your problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1598
Be sure that neither iTunes nor iPhoto is running when you install the iPhoto 9.4.1 update. After installing the update, then restart iTunes and iPhoto. By default, "All photos" is selected. Change this (it's no longer grayed out) to "Selected albums..." and you should be OK.

  • Time for me to upgrade to imac?

I currently have a G4 quicksilver tower mac running at 933mhz and running 10.3.9. It is 6 years old and has been a trusty mac.
I'm thinking it is time to upgrade to a 24 inch imac since I want an ipod touch and the latest software. The touch requires the latest OS and usb 2.0.
I do imovies, lots of photos and music.
Is it time for me to visit the apple store and drop some money??

I hate doing the "wait for the new stuff" game.
    Me too.
What will they do? Change the colors? Faster speeds?
There are three rather significant changes I'm hoping to see in the
very near future. No tellin' when, but it can't be long because the
rest of the world is already there:
\- an optical drive with BlueRay (and maybe HD DVD) capability
\- an eSATA interface or two for high speed external disk drives
\- an external video input with sufficient bandwidth for 1080p
... I/O bandwidth is your friend,

    Hello,
    As far as Browsers...
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/downloads/list
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

  • Time Machine and Upgrading to SL

    Hello all,
Sorry for the amateur questions, but I'm looking for some guidance on using Time Machine when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MBP.
I tried upgrading to SL months ago when it first came out. I did not use Time Machine at that time, because I did not want to reformat my external drive and risk losing all my files (music, videos, documents, etc. - I had just switched to Mac from PC). As a result, I lost some stuff when I upgraded (iTunes purchases, some applications, calendars, contacts, etc.). I had back ups of the important stuff on my external, so no real harm done - just a moderate inconvenience. But SL caused some major lagging when playing iTunes or using the internet so I downgraded back to Leopard, again losing the same sort of material along the way. This time Apple would not restore my iTunes purchases, so I was a little more bitter about it. The computer has been running great back on Leopard, but now I want to try upgrading again. I'm hoping to do a clean install, erasing the hard drive, etc. to avoid glitchy or lagging operation - and this time, without losing all my stuff. So here I go, a few basic questions:
    1. If I use Time Machine to back up my data before the upgrade, will I be able to restore it to SL and use it just like before? If so, will that include all my iTunes purchases, contacts and applications, etc.?
    2. I keep copies of all my videos and music in separate folders on my external hard drive. Will using Time Machine make this redundant? Can I delete those duplicate files for space?
    3. How difficult is a clean install? If I have a Time Machine back up on my external, and I follow the on-screen instructions, will I be okay?
Thanks very much in advance for any help!

    1. You can use Migration Assistant to migrate your Home folder, third-party applications, network prefs, etc. from your backup. The Setup Assistant will provide the option post-installation if you do a clean install - erase the drive then install SL.
Alternatively, you can simply upgrade from Leopard so you don't need to restore anything from a backup. If you upgrade install then be sure you have done the following first:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. TM is not a storage utility nor can you simply access files as you would on your external drive. TM is an incremental backup system. If you wish to keep your data on a separate drive, then continue to do so. Get a separate drive to use exclusively for your TM backups. That drive needs to have about twice the capacity of the drive or drives backed up. You can use TM to backup the data on your external drive as well as on the internal drive. Backups are never redundant, but redundant backups can prevent data loss.
    3. A clean install is simple - erase the drive then install. Since we have no way to know how things are now, there's no way to know if you will "be okay."

  • How many times can you upgrade your ipad mini?

i have the ipad mini, and i would like to know, how many times you can upgrade? reason being the 3rd gerantion ipodtouch only upgrades once. for an ipad mini can i upgrade more than once, because it would be fair

There is no limit to the number of times an iPad can get an iOS update. Eventually though the iOS will evolve beyond the capabilities of the specific iPad. Tis is already the case for the original iPad. That iPad can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1 and no further. So far all iPads after that continue to receive updates when Apple releases them.

  • Can you trade in your iphone5 for the iphone 6 if you are not eligible for an upgrade?

I want to take advantage of the iphone trade in offer Verizon is offering, can I do this if I am not eligible for an upgrade yet?

    No.
Either wait it out for your upgrade time, or switch to a Verizon Edge plan (you have to turn in your iPhone 5 in lieu of ETF fees).
With Edge, you don't get anything in return for your phone, except out of your current contract.

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.
